Sutliff Cringle Flake 2024 | rich & fruity aged Red Virginia | might be the final CF instalment!!
It was a quite a faff getting hold of this blend but two good reasons gave me the push. First, as we all are aware of the latest news from STG, this blend might be the last of the Cringle Flake series by Sutliff. Second, the 14 year old aged American flue cured & Canadian flue cured red Virginias are the last of what was sourced from McClelland’s. Well, now that i have tried it i can happily say it was well worth the effort. BTW i trust you would enjoy the last few minutes of this video😊
Blend info
The sixth instalment of Sutliff's highly anticipated, seasonal pipe tobacco, Cringle Flake 2024 is a blend of aged, fourteen-year-old Red Virginias. This incredible holiday mixture presents an exceptional flavor right out of the tin, with a deep richness sure to improve even further with additional age. Pressed into cakes and then sliced into flakes, this blend offers a rich flavor profile of bread, dark fruit, and spice. Notes: The Virginias are the last of what was sourced from McClelland’s.

Hi! I bought 10 jars 100 gram of rattrays old gowrie tobacco. Is it ok to cellar the tobacco in these jars?
I love your reviews. In my opinion this is way better than the last few releases. Thanks
Sounds very interesting
Beautiful pipe, and with the red band very fitting for smoking a Christmas blend. New subscriber. Thanks.
Thank you Jim. That was my thinking by choosing this pipe😊 welcome to channel
Great-looking pipes. I stuff the flake into the bowl similar to the way you do it. 💨
Thanks for your comment.
Blue sounds amazing. When you speak of dark fruit is it more like raisins or a perique fruit note? This information is useful- thank you!
@Karis2241. Dark fruit flavour in tobacco is best described as dried plum, fig, and brown raisins. It is that earthy sweet & fruity aroma you smell when opening a sealed bag of those dried fruit, you taste with some tobacco leaf especially red Virginia and to some extent with perique but with added spicy nots
Your passion is fabulous!
Thanks Adam😊
Waiting on my first taste of No Bite Delight to arrive. Along with a renewed store of Northwoods. That poker is absolutely beautiful You sound a little bit like me. Some days i dont plan to run, but i go out my door in the morning, and the air is too sweet to resist. Cheers brother! Sweet smokes! 💨💨💨
Excellent 👌 would love your feedback on the No Bite. As for the running yes the outdoors & fresh air has a magical effect & the good feel factor when your body is in full swing & that glorious calm feeling when you are done😊
Excellent video Nathan. Bit concerning all these rumours regarding STG - KBV’s blends look like being effected as he sources his tobacco’s from Sutliff. Burley Morning Pipe and a few others are already out of stock! Happy smokes Martin
Thanks Martin. Yes I also noticed. Lucky I stocked up on Burley morning pipe a while ago. I hope this excellent blend is temporary out of stock as this happened in the past it appears again as available. Maybe they still have Sutliff tobacco or perhaps they would source elsewhere. Time would tell I suppose.
Great review Nathan. Hope you have a very happy Christmas
You too Richard. Thanks
I bought my first regular zippo about a month ago. So far, the two things I like about the zippo is- that it works consistently and that the flint wheel etc. is enclosed by a case when it is not in use. Tasting zippo fluid for a while is the one unfortunate quality to using a zippo. I have a butane lighter with the pipe tools on the side and I have not found it to be as reliable. Lovely video. Thank you!
Yes I agree Zippo lighters are reliable. Thanks for sharing your experience
Good Morning 😊 The Sun is Just Rising Now in The South 🌅 Fantastic Blend 👏🏼Beautiful Pipe 😍 Fantastic Review👌🏽As Always , Your Thoughts are Much Appreciated 👍🏼 It is a Pleasure To Watch Your Videos , They Are Informative and Educational 💯 Have a Wonderful Day & Greetings From South Africa 🇿🇦
Thank you Yusuf. Wonderful day to you as well.
Love the videos! & Shout out to Simon of LCS Briars. I have pipe #925 & it’s a great smoker. Can’t recommend him enough. He makes gorgeous pipes
Thank you Simian. I agree he does design gorgeous pipes. Enjoy your 925 that looks amazing
Love the scenery of your run. Very beautiful! Where are you from?
Thanks. I am from London UK. Believe it or not London is blessed with most beautiful natural parks & water ways that many don’t take advantage of
I went back in and tried to edit my video to tag you. It’s not letting me. That strange one that has numbers and letters after it is the only one that comes up. I’m subscribed to you. I don’t understand why that’s happening. Normally, I could just start typing the person‘s channel and it will come up automatically and I can click on it.
@JohnsPipeJourney. That is strange John🤔 i copied & pasted below my YT handle the way it appears on the channel. That might help. If not don't worry about it. there are so much more important matters in life to worry anout 😊 my full YT handle: youtube.com/@TheVapingPiper
Forgot to say how I love that wooosh sound
So do I😃 that woosh sound followed by the aroma of fresh tobacco is priceless
Great review as always. I think STC will keep a lot of tobaccos available. But time will tell
Let’s hope so Michael 🙏
I really didn’t like 2023 but I let it sit in a mason jar with a 72% moisture pack for about 8 months now I really like it ..gotta try the 2024 .I think this is a totally different blend.I wonder if this is similar to Best Brown Flake of Samuel Gawith ?
Interesting method of aging you use🤔 normally only cigars need a moist environment. I wonder what has the moisture changed the flavours that you now enjoy it. Also Isn’t the tobacco leaf too moist to smoke. Finally with such high humidity one has to be careful with tobacco leaf mould
@TheVapingPiperactually these small moisture pack lose moisture over time when I bought 2023 it was extremely dry .. autumn leaf 🍁 dry… as well the Flakes quite thick. The moisture returned and flavors were good .I don’t recommend this method with other brands
@TheVapingPiper. Lovely video Nathan. Loved the way you ended the video as your pure enjoyment of your pipe is very evident. I bet Steve has chosen the Carol of the bells as background tune to your morning run😀 Very nice👌 Now I must add my thoughts about STG capitalist ambition & greed. Niche & local tobacco companies like Sutliff & MB are consumed by corporate & global enterprises causing massive job loss and 100’s of years of blending craftsmanship disappears for ever. I do believe in some form of competitive capitalism, but this move is way out of line. We all must support our local tobacco companies to form some kind of check & control on prices and keep the blends we love to remain available. Forgive me on the rant but I bet we all feel the same. With hope for better news on the coming year I wish you, family & guys a happy new year. Btw I love your Poker it is a stunning pipe
Thanks Gary. I feel your frustration as i know you enjoy some Sutliff & MB blends but i think we are too hasty in regards of guessing which blends would be available after STG takeover it is wise to wait and see what happens. From a pure business standpoint i am sure STG would keep producing the most popular & profitable blends of Sutliff & MB. Let's wait patiently and see how it all plays out, it might appear that after the dust settle it all turns out to be a storm in a tea cup and all your favourite blends would be available. Another point, since STG supply the UK market so the good news would be, that the HH blends might finally be available in the UK. As for the music, yes I admit Steven has chosen the Carol of the bells😊 happy holidays to you too. Be in touch over the holidays
@TheVapingPiper Ok Nathan i hope you are right 👍 take care mate
My dear Nathan although most likely I wouldn’t have a chance to smoke this blend nevertheless I most enjoyed today’s video. It does sound tempting to try 14 year old red Virginia especially as I understood it was sourced from McClelland’s. The ending of the video was beautiful and the background theme of Carol of the bells was moving. Btw we couldn't stop laughing when hearing you moaning about your wife feeding the sour dough as Beth is as well consumed by the very same craze😂 Seasonal greetings to you & family. Regards. Daniel & Beth. Oh, don’t get me started on the fiasco of STG taking control of centuries old tobacco companies like Sutliff & Mac Barren. Disgraceful
So Beth is also in this sourdough craze😂 I hope you like it as well. I am happy you enjoyed the running route (although speeded up to save time) and the beautiful Carol of the bells background piano music. As for STG takeover read my reply to Gary @gmp6045. Have a lovely holiday & take care. Regards to Beth.
@TheVapingPiper Getting to like it😁 I read your reply to @gmp6045 it makes sense Nathan will wait & see how it all pans out.
Nathan. I always love watching your videos. You have a great accent that is relaxing/calming. Always interested in what you think of a blend. I purchased 5 tins of it. I haven’t tried it yet. What did you think about all of the benefits of nicotine? I was shocked, and glad! I hope that you have a wonderful and blessed Christmas.
Thanks John. About the benefits of nicotine yes I watch your very interesting video and in fact I posted a comment regarding the fact that many more non smokers were affected by Covid more severely than smokers. Btw I also mentioned that you posted my UA-cam Handle wrongly😊. Enjoy the holidays John and happy holidays to you & family. Btw you have a fabulous selection of Peterson pipes😊
I have only tried the 2023 and recently picked up another tin. Rather enjoyed that one.
This one is my first of this series. Apparently it is the only one with no perique just pure glorious aged Virginia worth the effort to get hold of this one if possible.
Believe 2/3 of SUTLIFFS blends will be gone.
Unfortunately I think so too
Love this bin, managed to get several tins gave 4 of them away to friends. Have 3 put back foŕ me.
Very nice of you John to give 4 away I doubt if they ever be available again as Sutliff is about to shot down if STG get their way. Very unfortunate
@TheVapingPiper that I knew, in fact I visited the plant to obtain them. Feel so sorry for Sutliff employees. Guess I,m just someone who likes to share. Am not a member of this greedy society and proud of thar!
Thank you for your videos. It is always a good part of my day when I find a new one. You do such an excellent job putting it all together and the content is appreciated.
Thank you Michael😊
As always... a corker of a video. Good content, scenery with a wonderful impressionistic piano accompaniment 🤓
Thank you Mark. The piano piece is the famous Carol of the Bells written by Ukrainian composer in 1914. Very beautiful piece of piano music
Hi Nathan, I hope you are all well, Apologies for being quiet in chat for a little while, just life stuff, I still watch and relax to your videos, your channel is as I expected growing steadily and will I have no doubt continue, Take care my friend 🙏
@-djs. How are you Daniel my friend. I was thinking of you lately. Please drop me a email so we can catch up properly😊
You should pass on your cigar collection to your Son-in-Law... Humidors included.
Besides the fact that I can’t just yet bring myself to part with my mostly aged Cuban’s, you should see his humidor twice the size, he has a huge selection of cigars of all sorts
@thevapingpiper I’m Filming a scene Soon where one of the Characters Will be smoking a Pipe I Humbly would like Your Opinion on Which Tobacco has the Most Smoke Output, like Thick Dense Maduro’Esc Smoke. Thank you Very Much in Advance
Well Zakariya,I hope you are not pulling my chain on this one😂 but I would play along. Apparently Burley & Latakia leaf produces most dense smoke. Bearing in mind the absolute waste of good Latakia leaf smoked in haste, Burley based blends like the Granger & Prince Albert are your best bet, at least they are pocket friendly Coger blends😊 I wish you success in your film project and if successful maybe we can all enjoy the fun😉
@ Most Definitely I’ll Keep You Updated. I’ll Have to Go with a Latakia, as smoking that Scene after Scene I Can Enjoy the Flavour. I was Planning on Going for a Charaten Eventide. As I actually enjoy this, But I really Would Favour a Tobacco that could give even Greater Smoke Output. Any more Recommendations would Be Great. God Bless.
The Charatan Eventide is actually a good option as it is a Latakia rich blend sweetened mildly with Virginia and spiced delicately with Oriental & perique so end result not too punchy yet tasty dense smoke. Of course the denseness of the Smoke depends heavily on frequency of draw so use a filtered pipe (tongue bite in mind 😊) with a deep & thick walled bowl well broken in preferably with a nice layer of carbon cake to protect the wood from overheating.
What do you think about STG buying mac Baren and stopping production? They will shut down their American productions forever.
Unfortunately as we understand based on STG upcoming strategic goal of Monopoly control over the pipe tobacco industry, the outlook does not look good for Mac Barren & Sutliff. This is capitalism at its worst!! When smaller companies if left alone can be profitable within their own designated markets like Sutliff & Mac Barren are in the USA market for centuries are eliminated based on global market profitability projectory vision of STG directors and shareholders. It is a very concerning for sub brands who branch out of Sutliff & MB as well. It is vital that the US market supports Cornell & Diehl and the like, so some form of competition is still at play to challenge STG total dominance of the pipe tobacco industry.
I bet you are an amazing fella to work for/with, enjoy!
I can’t vouch for myself of course 😊 but I appreciate your kind words
❤❤❤❤❤
🙏😊
I wasn’t really a fan of the Gold Flake. I really love the Blue Flake though! I’m actually aging an unopened can of the Blue Flake. My goal is to open it after 10 years of aging.
@GrognardPiper. My opinion is that life is too short to wait 10 years to smoke a particular blend😊 That said, I wish you long & healthy life.
@ until then I still get a tin of it every summer. I just wanted to get a good age one that tin to see how it compares.
I love meerschaum. I have 2. I wish I had more. One is my long road trip pipe because the pipe is huge and light. The other is another I often use in commuting. I love that I don't have to rest them and it's easy to clench and drive. I love briar because they can be so beautiful too, but meerschaum is just better hahaha. That pipe is so beautiful. I'd totally buy it if I could afford it hahaha.
Thank you for your feedback. Strangely I don’t enjoy pipe smoking while driving I need to be relaxed and stationary😊 I agree Meerschaum’s do deliver very enjoyable smoking experience
ً👍🔥
🙏😊
Great video Nathan, I really enjoy Capstan blue as well! If you haven’t seen the news, STG is going to cut many brands from the Mac Baren and Sutliff catalog. Check out the video posted by STUFFandTHINGS a few days ago, he covers the topic very well.
Great and well made video! Really inspirational! Regards from a new subscriber Sweden
Thank you & welcome to the channel
Really nicely done review. I prefer the Blue, richer and more mouth feel. Great all day smoke. Keep up the great reviews. Have you tried JF Germains Brown flake. That would make a nice review. 👍
@HernetheHunter121. Thanks. As for the Germains Brown flake unfortunately it is mostly out of stock but i managed to acquire another special Germains for my last video of 2024 to be published next week.
I think the yellow one is just hot air more or less. The blue is slightly better, but not much.
I was smiling when I read your comment😊 hot air ha?! Taste is so personal & can be so different to different people. Hot air to one and to another packed with tasty nuances. I wonder if using a filter would improve things🤔
@TheVapingPiper correct. I'm not a big Mac Baren fan overall. The Navy Flake is ok but the rest are just junk imho.
Well, luckily for us that we all can find a blend we enjoy😊
Good Morning 😊 Beauty of a Pipe 😍 Informative and Educational Video 💯 Appreciate The Reviews 👍🏼 The Comparison on The Blends are Most Interesting 👏🏼 Have a Wonderful Sunday and Happy Smoking Moments 🌬💨💨 Greetings From South Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks Yusuf. Wonderful Sunday to you too
Hi Nathan. Where did you get the nice white round labels to put on the jars? Are they removable? I'd love to buy some for my jars. I'm now using a small square sticky note.
I purchased them from Amazon. It is round stickers 50mm it comes in a roll of 500. At the time I paid £12.99. It sticks well and can be removed easily without tearing. A permanent pen marker is ideal to write on
@TheVapingPiper Thanks so much for the reply. Going to order some today.
By the way, after you reviewed Luxury bulls-eye flake, I ordered some and boy is it good.
@@bogbel1enjoy
Hello Nathan. Thanks for sharing your comparison. Both are solid blends. I also have many more of the blue. I have been cellaring these for years. They age wonderfully!!! Be well.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Enjoy
Wow great review will try them both. Enjoying some Lane BLWB in my crown and from your comments I will be trying both. Happy piping
Thanks Michael. Looking forward to hear your feedback. Enjoy your blend mentioned😊
Interesting...I enjoy both Gold & Blue, exceptionally good. Cellared deep on both of these along with another you have reviewed 😉Folding flakes is my preferred packing method...more intense flavour, longer lasting and a cooler smoke imo. Nathan, that cedar note you mention - I certainly detect in some of the more darker richer leaf blends, especially mid-bowl onwards. I've never tried Mac Baren's HH PV....but other less known pure Virginia's that I have enjoyed and would recommend are Bjarne's flake de luxe, Patriot and Skippers Flake by DTM and Pfeifen Timm's (no name) Gold. They are all similar in many ways but all have detectable subtle differences within the spectrum of the genre. I'm clearly a Virginia junkie😃 Have a lovely weekend.
Thanks Mark for your detailed comment & suggestions that I always pay close attention to😊 good to know that you also experienced that cedar note with some Virginia leaf that i defected with blue. I liked your description of you being a Virginia junky😃 I can wholeheartedly claim I am a general pipe tobacco junky Virginia blends including. I once used the expression a Tobccooholic😂 take care Mark.
Great video. I have tried the capstone blue. Thought it was ok. HH pure virginia I thought was a little better. But love orlik golden sliced and mac baren navy flake
Thanks Mike. I too enjoy the HH pure Virginia but I find the HH can cause tongue bite to some more than the Capstan. Did you experience the same.
What a treat Nathan a double review of my favourite Virginia brand. I love them both & i agree the Blue is wee richer. Like another favourite of mine the St. Bruno I prefer them both ready rubbed it seems to smoke better, i guess i am in the that camp who claim the ready rubbed smokes better 😁 That said whichever type of cut one prefers the Capstan rains king in the straight Virginia realm. Regards. Daniel & Beth
Thanks Daniel. Indeed I can understand both views on flake vs ready rubbed. What I always say try both cuts and decide what appeals to you most or both. Take care my friend & regards to Beth.
Enjoying this one. Love the rusticated pipe Nathan
Thanks Richard.
Nice review. To be honest Capstan blue is a nice tobacco but if i have to choose i go for MacBaren Virginia #1 at this moment my favorite. A little sweet and later in de bowl the honeytaste. Capstan blue... My first smell tomatoketchup a little overwelming... My plan was to sm9ke a bowl Blue... But it wil be an Amphora Full also a MacBaren made tobacco
Thanks. Yes the HH Virginia is also top quality that I will share my thoughts in upcoming videos. That ketchup smell that some talk about for some reason never registered with my sense of smell😊 in any case we are lucky that nowadays everyone can find a favourite Virginia which ever brand.
@TheVapingPiper Yesterday evening i tried Capstan Blue again... By folding the flake... What a difference in taste!!! And a cooler pipe. I had to light the pipe much more. Normally when the flake is rubbed i let it rest for 10-15 minutes. I did not yesterday. I smoked the pipe and enjoyed Capstan Blue.
Enjoyed the review. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks
Brilliant video Nathan👌 especially useful for those who are starting pipe smoking and want to dabble in the joy of pure Virginia tobacco. Both Capstan's are classics that deliver the finest smoking experience of top class Virginia leaf. In regards to flake Vs ready rubbed, my theory is that if you fold the flake and pack your pipe then the flake form is preferred but if you anyway shred the flake then ready rubbed is preferred as more oxygen is incorporated into the smoke & brings out the finer flavours of the leaf. I always recommend new pipe smokers to try the ready rubbed until they master the art of the whole flake packing method. Ok that is my 2 cents worth opinion. Have a nice Sunday the weather tomorrow seems to be spring like 12C 👍 Speak soon
Thanks Gary. Your theory is spot on & very useful👍 as for the weather we had today a lovely sunny day hopefully tomorrow will be the same. Enjoy your Sunday as well.
Those who start with pure Virginias will probably have very little satisfaction from this beautiful pleasure. It should also be emphasized that the quality of the smoke depends a lot on the diameter and depth of the bowl of the pipe. Measurements that are too narrow and very wide are only suitable for experts, but unfortunately those who start choose Beauty without knowing what they will encounter and perhaps it is for this reason that so many smokers abandon this pleasure that I love so much.
@Jobpipe. Valid points 👍 thanks for taking the time to post useful advice.
