Alliance of Sahel States: Africa’s New Songhai Empire?
👑 Songhai Empire vs Sahel States: Africa’s Past and Future?
Are We Witnessing the Rebirth of the Songhai Empire? After my video about the Alliance of the Sahel States (AES) some people wrote in the comments that this Alliance may be a continuation or reunification of the Great West African empires, especially the Songhai empire, the last one of the big empires in West Africa.
Let's check it out! Even though a comparison is difficult because of the huge historical and geopolitical contexts, it's fun to think about the differences and similarities between these two major constructs, one was an empire that survived over 180 years, the other is a union that just turned one.
I'll do my best for this comparison 🤓

    Today, Morocco is providing more help to the AES than the other ECOWAS members. Morocco helped by constructing generators for electricity and are constructing a port to provide access to the coast for these countries.

    Intelligent Presentation! Well done ma'aam, thanks a lot! 2. We in West Africa saw the link from the day that AES was born. That is why we are against the shenanigans of the corrupt politicians who are trying to sabotage the AES by bringing back Bazoum or through any other silly scheme. 3. Imagine trying to force membership of any organisation on independent countries who are no longer interested in being enslaved by local agents of modern slave traders and their predatory Fancy Financial Institutions in Washington.😮 4. Thanks once again, and good luck with your research endeavours.🎉🎉 Cheers!

    While I appreciate you informing people about the Songhai Empire, your little comments about hoping they dont bring back slavery are completely absurd. The only places that have brought back slavery in modern times are countries destroyed by western forces, aka Libya. Also, the implication that old African style slavery was similar to western chattel slavery is laughable and ahistorical. Slaves in Africa were still treated like human beings; their children were not born as slaves, they could free themselves in some way, and some gained respect and titles in society even while being a slave. I have to say, you Europeans inserting these little dismissive, racist quips as if black people are naturally backwards is why I don't believe it's possible for us to have a communist movement with you all. The patronizing never ends. I suggest thinking harder about the implications of your personal commentary in the future.

    • @historyfox
      @historyfox День тому

      I'm sorry I didn't express myself well enough there and left too much room of interpretation. It was not my intent to say anything about slavery coming back, I simply wanted to state an obvious difference between Songhai and AES and with that I wanted to emphasise the huge historical and geopolitical difference between the empire and the alliance. I also agree with you, that the situation in Libya is the result of the NATO intervention in 2011, I also made a video about Gaddafi where I talk about this injustice there. I also didn't compare the different versions of slavery, there were surely huge differences depending on era and geography, but it's sure that slavery was there and it's good that it's over no matter where. I think it's a harsh and unreasonable statement that I added any kind of racist or patronizing undertone, I assume I either expressed myself not clear enough or you intentionally read something into my words that wasn't there.

    • @badbaldbish
      @badbaldbish День тому

      @historyfox There are many more differences between the Songhai Empire and modern day Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. There are many other ways to emphasize that difference. It's just strange to mention that specifically and also your wording made it sound as if you were proposing a possible future, not making a quip not meant to be taken seriously. I'm sorry for you feeling my comment is too harsh, but I'd rather be honest about how this comes off to black people who support communism. I do enjoy your channel and wouldn't have said anything if I didn't care.

    No. You don't get to be an empire by acting as proxies to the Russian Federation. PIe in the sky. These are a set of impoverished dysfunctional dictatorships that have been destabilized by Islamism, coup-oriented foreign intervention, and failed attempts at beneficial foreign aid and economic reconstruction. You think this is a good foundation for an empire? No. Are you nuts? I'm sorry, but if you really have a educational background in history, then how could you completely ignore the place of these nations in geopolitics since the beginning of the postcolonial period? They are BARELY functional. Plus, you should already know that there is NO historical precursor for dictators deciding to give up power to one another in a confederation of any kind. What did you hope to accomplish with this video? Give the people of the Sahel false hope after everything they've already been through? Provide Russian propagandists free services? Why would an intelligent German citizen do this?

    • @historyfox
      @historyfox День тому

      Thank you for your comment! First of all, I don't want any empire to come back, because empires are built on violently conquering other territories. Instead this alliance should be based on diplomacy and a common vision, which I think they are trying so far. Secondly, these nations tend to be less stable because of the continued interferences from Western countries, even the jihadist groups were being born out of the conflicts in North Africa and the Middle East (which began with US regimes changes and the weapons they left and those that were looted from Gaddafi). So I hope that if they can achieve more independence from the old partners they can finally start to be more stable, if US, France but of course also Russia and China let them be stable. Thirdly, I try to be not too naive, but I am optimistic. I'm rooting for the Alliance because I always trust in a new beginning and I think they achieved some great changes so far (the chasing away of the US military, the nationalization of some of the French mining companies). However, you are right, I'm also aware of some signs that might lead into a completely wrong direction, for example the extension till the next elections in these countries and the criminalisation of homosexuality. In the worst case this will be just another military dictatorship, but I just want to hope that something good can come out of this.

    • @historyfox
      @historyfox День тому

      Yes, they have to work together in this quest of getting more independent from their partners. They are the strongest in union. Now that they are getting rid of the old partners (France, US, Germany) and dealing with new ones (Russia, China) they can arrange better partnerships. The next step would be then to get the best out of these deals and get that stable and self-sufficient that they don't even require these partnerships anymore.

Because people like you pretend it doesn't exist. Which is why you jumped to the most extreme example like slavery. Even though the west finance warlords in Congo to force people to work for free so that the west can have cheap or free resources. So even slavery isn't a ridiculous idea. Very few will appreciate the significance of this. Songhai was one of Africa's most powerful empires. It was not destroyed, just temporarily interrupted. Thank you, History Fox. Your work is gold. Hush-in the palace of Songhai Askia’s muse moves words, and the spirits of men rise. The king sits on a humble throne where scribes have etched his name in stone. The last of day’s rays pour down the painted roof. Colors splash through, only to puddle atop the marble floor. Dressed fine, gilded in gold, the loyal of the land, young and old sit ready to enter a story the prophecies foretold!

      No. Sadly these Sahel states have very limited resources, Songhai became an empire and rich because its rulers monopilized so much of the trade with Africa and rest of the world.. via the desert. Today no one cares about crossing the desert, because they can buy and sell goods by flying and shipping much more easily. Today Sahel states have some interesting mines, and tons of people with low education, poor agricultural land and a great deal of imminent political and reglious instability. The best outcome for these states would be to be annexed, or better loosly federated (since we do not want to create majorities with poorly educated muslims) to their coastal neighours such as Nigerian, Ghana or Ivory Coast for example.
