Hi guys, welcome to my channel, Pete's Kits.
My interest in building models started back in the 1960's, and, after many years of dealing with life's demands, have finally gotten back into, what I always found to be, the, enjoyable, educational, and yes, sometimes challenging, pastime of building model kits.
Initially, you will find here, reviews of most, if not all, of the kits that I hold in my personal stash. My tastes are very eclectic, spanning different scales, genres and ages. So hopefully there will be something of interest to everyone.
By no means an expert (or a Rivet Counter), studying the wealth of knowledge, and experience, available on the Internet, has already helped improve my skills, and techniques.
As my skills improve and grow, so will this channel. There will be not only Kit Reviews, but also Build Videos, Diorama Builds, and even Hints and Tips, based on my own learning experiences.
Cheers! And thanks for stopping by!

A departure from the usual tank, or AFV, Roden's Opel Blitz Omnibus model, (Kit No. 807, released 2015), went together well overall, and makes an interesting addition to any collection, but did come with some issues, including fragile decals, and ill-fitting doors. Tamiya 1/35 BMW R75 w/Sidecar - Kit Review
Can this model technically work? If you expose it to strong winds...
No, unfortunately not as it is. Not without a lot of work. In real life the base section, that mounts on the top of the rotor mast, is separate from the hub to which the blades are mounted. In the kit this is all one solid resin piece, that gets glued to the top of the rotor mast. If you have a look at the assembly instructions on the video at 4:35, you will see what I mean. To make it work you would have to either very very carefully separate the base from the blade mount, or, scratch build separate parts, remembering that the base doesn't rotate as it has the pilot's control arm attached to it. That would be a lot of work for probably not much gain. Good idea though, but, not really practical. Cheers!
@@PetesKits I was only thinking about the possibility of rotating the rotor. No connection to the rest of the control mechanism (doesn't matter because it's not RC). However, if the model designer did not think about this, I am afraid that after such a cut (which theoretically will enable the rotor to rotate) the whole thing will be structurally weak and will float in the wind for a few minutes... and then fall apart.
@@Zbigniew_Nowak Most definitely my friend. It is a very delicate kit. But, it is a shame that they didn't make the blades moveable. Maybe they realised that it wouldn't take the strain too. The blades themselves are the thickest bit of the whole kit! Cheers & Seasons Greetings!
I fancied doing a quick build last night for a break from the terrible Italeri Tiger 1 kit so I pulled this one out of the stash, thought I'd have it slapped together in a couple of hours.....! Seven hours later I had the trailer together and just the main central section of the gun body done, I had also drilled out one of the gun barrels but coming back to this vid to check out your reference photo's I can see that I've got more drilling to do. There was a lot of clean up on the parts, way more than I imagined but it goes together very nicely. I have to admit to not even looking at the ejector pin marks on the gun shield until I watched the vid again but it is something I'm just going to have to fix as I've got to have the gun shield on mine, its part of the iconic look of this weapon. And now to the point of this comment. Has there ever, in the entire history of model making, been a kit that could be classed as a quick build? I keep pulling what I think will be "quick build" kits out of my stash but actually I have yet to find one! Maybe I'm too fussy when I insist on cleaning up every seam line or ejector pin mark but that's just who I am 🧐 Just for the craic, one day I'm going to open a kit, snip the bits off the sprues and glue everything together with absolutely no clean up just to see how bad it could look literally straight out of the box!
Hi mate. I feel your pain. Started building one of my three Tamiya 88's, thinking it'd be a quick weekend build. Tamiya kit. They go together easy. Everything fits.Just need to build it and paint. Done. Etc. etc. etc. But....it's an old mould. Every single piece has mould lines. On every single surface. Some sticking up like Hadrians Wall on the Scottish Highlands. Very little flash. But mould lines for evermore. Plus, some parts of the mould have obviously become misaligned over the years. Meaning one part just needs the line cleaning, but its twin needs sanding, hard, to match up. Don't get me wrong, it's coming along nicely, but it's gone from a weekend build to a week+ build. Now as for your question... back when I was young, and building kits, we always had them built and painted in a weekend. But, when I pry those oldies out of the old box they're in...my god. Talk about crudely built. Mould lines, brush lines in the paint, and some very crude detailing. Silver painted spades and pick axes? Monotone uniforms and store dummy faces.... I think as we've aged, gracefully, we've become more discerning, more experienced, and yes, more picky about finishing our kits. I'm like you. Every mould line. Every push out point. Even on the smallest piece. Has to be dealt with. They may not be show standard, but they're certainly not "OMG did I do that?" standard either. And as for a true weekend kit, hmmm, they do exist. But not if it's got more than 30 parts in the box. The Bronco Seehund sub, and the Bronco V-1, I've built, were basically weekend builds. Not many parts, fairly easy cleanup, and basic painting. Only because they were basically only two halves glued together with bits added. The more bits, or the older it is, the less of a weekender it's going to be. At least from my experience (and now yours). Sometimes I think like you. Just drag something out of the stash, cut off the sprues, and slap on the glue. But then, my conscience would attack, and I'd probably end up either tearing it apart, and fixing it, or just chucking it in the bin, and buy another one to do properly...Oh to be young and niave again! Cheers Mate!
@@PetesKits Hey! there's nowt wrong with monotone uniforms and shop dummy faces!...... its what I do best 🤣 I do know about the Tamiya 88 though as I built one a couple of years ago and I remember it well. Every single part had what can only be described as micro flash along every single edge of each molded piece, every single part had to be sanded with 1200 grit to remove this very fine flash and that was another of my quick build projects that like yours, dragged on well past its "stale by" date. Still an excellent kit for its age but definitely not a weekender with all of the clean up. Doesn't Eduard make aircraft kits they call Weekend Edition? I can honestly say that I've never seen a review vid or even a build vid of one but it has me wondering if they truly are designed to be slapped together in a weekend, not something that I would ever find out because as far as I know they were only aircraft and I don't bother with those. Keep on mangling the plastic Pete! 👍
@@martinoconnor4314 Yes indeed my friend, Eduard does make "weekend edition" kits. And yes only aircraft. They call them that because they don't have the plethora of PE parts that Eduard normally packs in, meaning, in theory, you could build it in a weekend, but probably not, since they are still quite detailed anyway. Especially as with aircraft they need the cockpit and instruments panels etc painted, and detailed first! And all the fiddly undercarriage and stuff! And then there's that bit, and that bit, and that bit, and so on. No way I'd get an aircraft kit done in a weekend. Not a chance in Hades! Anyway at least with all the sanding and filing we keep our dexterity going! 🤣 Cheers mate! Happy sanding!
Hi Pete. Thanks for the vid. Nice little set. Signs are a bit nicer than Tamiya's cardboard cut outs. Miniart do great figures and diorama stuff. Lots of non combat/down time figures which I like. And of course their wonderful (If sometimes somewhat complex) kits. Nice, varied subjects too. Just got ICM's 1/48 Luftwaffe Airfield Equipment with it's own little guard hut and boom gate which is nice. A review of ICM's long drop dunny (WC Field Toilet 1/35 35800) would be interesting/amusing. Cheers Matt the Adelaidean.
Hi Matt. Glad you liked the video. This is one of those Miniart kits that you could stick almost anywhere on a cityscape dio, and it wouldn't look too out of place. Love the idea of reviewing ICM's WC! When I first saw the ICM dunny I thought it was some kind of April Fool's, but it's a dead serious kit. But, at about $27, for just that, might give it a miss for a while. Unless, I see one going dirt cheap that is! Cheers mate! Have a good Chrissie!
hi dear Pete,i love this kit wich fits in any diorama with much accessories;the wood grain is stunning!thanks for the review;cheers Patrick👍
Thanks Patrick. I agree, this little kit would make an ideal add-on for any diorama setting! Cheers my friend!
Nice one Pete, I like the looks of the decals but to be honest I think I'd have more fun trying to scratch build most of the stuff in the kit.
Thanks mate. The decals are definitely one of the drawcards of this kit. Cheers mate!
Schönes Kit👍für ein Diorama. Kann man viel daraus machen. Schöne Grüße aus Hagen germany sendet dir Markus.
Thanks Markus! Yes indeed, you can use some or all of this kit in all sorts of diorama settings. Cheers from Oz!
Pete you are a beautiful person !your model presentations is the best..!(i don't say that very often) Thank you !
Thank you so much for such an amazing compliment. I really do appreciate that! Cheers my friend!
hi dear Pete, thank for the history and review;i love locomotives;when i was young in Deutsclhland;i take trains with this locomotive;goods memories!cheers Patrick
Hi Patrick! Glad you liked this one, and glad it brought back some good memories! Cheers my friend!
Too-thin or non-existant Decal-film can be built up with a few light coats of Testor's Dullcote (or any lacquer dullcoat, I guess). Kudos on the job. Respect, eh.
Thanks for the tip! glad you liked the build! Cheers!
I have built them. Excellent figurine kit with guns for each soldier. The final result cries for a diorama.
Yes, this one would most definitely make for an excellent dio subject! Cheers!
Using a combination of mat black paint ,rust wash and rust pigment powder on the undercarriage comes up nice 😅
Thanks for that. I haven't weathered an loco before so this tip will come in very handy. Cheers mate!
Ive built two of thoses kits but i wish you could make the drive wheel move freely instead of being a static model Plus the hand rails on the doors and the ones that go from the front of the cab to the front of the model are very fragile and can easily break off
Thanks for that heads up about the hand rails. It's always good to get this kinda advice. And yeah, I had the same thought, but couldn't see an easy way to make it work. Cheers!
Very cool
Thanks mate. Something a little bit different! Cheers!

am 73 and just started to build models again
That's excellent. Welcome back to the fold. I'm 68 and only got back into it about 4 years ago. So much has changed but the enjoyment and community is still there. Cheers!
Nice one Pete, a very informative review, I didn't realise how little I knew about German wartime trains and why they would use diesels instead of steam power. I can honestly say though that I can't ever see me buying a loco kit, I wouldn't be able to cover my bodges with mud.
Thanks mate! That's true, not too much to do in the way of weathering on this one. can't exaclty have mud splatters! Glad you found this one interesting! Cheers!
Nice one Pete, its a shame about the packaging damage, not an easy fix in just about the worst possible place.
Yes indeed. And since it was in it's own protective box, the fact it was packed like that is even more annoying. I love Miniart's detailed kits, but this one, disappointing. Cheers mate!
@@PetesKits Cheers Pete, I had just bought this kit before I came on here looking for a review. It was cheap as chips but none of the parts were bagged and no cardboard box on the bodywork so should I be worried what state it may be in, I dare say nothing that can't be fixed with some brute force, ignorance and lager! Other than the window supports it does look like a very nice kit, that engine has got to be opened up, it would be a crime to hide all that detail.
@@martinoconnor4314 Very true my friend. Nothing that brute force, ignorance, and lager (coffee in my case) can't fix. And yes, that engine is just crying out to be displayed. Just dragged mine out, and I think the old soaking 9and re-soaking) in hot water might just fix the problem. If not, might just turn it into a burned out wreck on a diorama. There's always a way out of these things! Cheers mate!
@@PetesKits 🤣..... I can't believe you said that as the exact same thought occurred to me! "Well if I mess it up it can always be a wreck at the side of the road with the engine covers mysteriously blown off!". Great minds think alike 👍
@@martinoconnor4314 Exactly! Build it like it's been run over by a tank, or hit by a shell. Either way everything is going to pop off! Hmm, bullet holes and shrapnel holes in the body, and torn metal. Like the sound of that. Time to do some testing! Cheers mate!
A very good idea to remove 2 sits, so you can fix the "riders" into it!
Yes, it was the only way the figures were going to fit properly. Think it turned out pretty good, and you'd don't even notice it! Cheers!
Fantastic build, Pete. There is 2 more different bus that Roden supply, a late version where a number of changes were made to construction, and the Staffwagen. The staff vehicles had most of the seats removed and a few tables were fitted. They were equipped with various pieces of special equipment like telegraph machines, radios, Enigma encryption machines, etc. which is included in the Roden's kit. I have all 3 but only have half built the late version and encountered the same fit problems bonnet, door, and so on. Thank you doing a video on this subject as it is very rare to see. Well done, mate and I look forward to seeing more of your builds.
Hi mate. Glad you liked the build. Much appreciated. I did see the Staffwagen kit ages ago but usually the only one that turns up is this one. Wouldn't mind picking up one of those, especially now I know what I'm in for. Add a few DAK figures and maybe a Rommel, and it'd make for a great dio layout. Cheers!
Cool build
Thanks! Appreciate the compliment! Cheers1
These seats are designed for people with negative legs size. Looks like horizontal part of the seat is too big. Roden is not the most accurate company under Sun of this planet.
Yep, think you're right. Had a look at the unused seats in my spares box, and the "seat" part does look too long. Don't know why I didn't spot that myself. And yeah, I have heard a few comments about Roden's accuracy. Still overall she turned out okay, and I'm happy with that. Cheers!
Microsol makes a decal restorer. I t is really good I have used it to restore very old decals from Alan and Airfix.
Lovely. I've got one myself in the stash!😀👍
Thanks! Hope this build helps when you get to yours! Cheers!
@PetesKits absolutely thankyou for the excellent build😀
Great build, paint, everything excellent. I wanted especially to praise your arrangement of the figures within the bus. They really look like they are acting naturally, some conversing with each other, etc. exactly as real people would do. Lots of modelers build and paint excellent figures but forget to plan how they will look at each other, interact, etc. Well done!
Thank you! Really appreciate the compliment! And yes, I've seen those dio's too where there's lots of figures, but no interaction. It's a little thing but really helps set the scene. Cheers, and thanks again!
Thanks! Fantastic review!
Nice build!
Very nice build, well done 👌👌subbed!
Glad you liked it! thanks for the Sub. Much appreciated! Cheers!
I got the same figures I think, it was about 12 and I put them in one of those german half track artillery pullers. They were perfect the Roden kit in the end just had too many MacGyver requirements
"MacGyver requirements". Perfect description. Might use that in the future! This one went together well, and looks good, but the push out points on every single part was the thing that got me about this kit. Even the tiny bits had at least one! At least I'll know what to look out for if i ever get another Roden. Cheers!
@@PetesKits I had considered that kit as I sort have an Afrika Korps convoy theme going, but I have changted my mind, now that someone has agreed with my thinking. Thanks
@@davidshepherd397 Think if I ever got another one (cheap) I'd scrap the seats, and kit it out as a workshop with Miniart, or maybe resin, parts, covering up all the push out points with tools and stuff, and set it up as a mini-dio with open doors so I didn't have to worry about them not fitting. That's if I get another one! Cheers mate!
@@PetesKits so true good idea, but I think I would have to receive it as a gift haha
@@davidshepherd397 With you on that one! Cheers!
I built the Roden Greyhound "silversides". Apart from a few fitting issues, I wwanted to put figures inside and the 1 35 sacle passengers were just too big. I tried 1 48 but they all looked like kids. I was very disappoited. Same issue with the engine, I would have had to glue the hatches open and that looks wrong with a bunch of passengers. I'm pretty sure the actual scale was more like 1 40. Roden you misled me. I did however enjoy the build and the fiddle.
One of the reasons I re-arranged the seating in this one. The Dragon figures were just too big to fit into the Roden seating arrangement. I wouldn't be surprised if the scale was slightly out in some dimensions! Cheers!
Hey Pete. Quick question. I've never done a Roden kit, so I was wondering if the molds are from Italeri?
Hi mate. Roden is a Ukrainian company, that not only makes their own plastic kits but also machines and makes the actual moulds for them. As far as I know, they also make, and sell, moulds to other companies as well, so it's possible that Italeri uses Roden's moulds for some of their kits. Hope this helps! Cheers!
Hi Pete. Very nice result. Cool diorama. Funny how so many kit makers give you a lovely engine but make it difficult to display. Acetate is a pain! Reminds me of the crappy old private service buses in Adelaide when I was a kid in the late 60's! Wooden benches and rear seats facing each other. Saw Microscale liquid decal film being hand brushed over some dodgy decals on another channel. Self levelling and seemed to do the trick. Hard to get as it's surface shipping only but I've got some old decals I'd like to try it on. Thanks for the vid and build. Cheers Matt
Thanks Matt! Yeah, would have been nice if showing the engine was an easy option. Must have a look at that Microscale vid. heaven knows I have some old kits that I just know the decals will go sideways on! Cheers mate!
@@PetesKits Greg's Models / Tamiya's 1/48 P47 Razorback (Full Build) Part 2 Cheers
@@MatterusOD Thanks Matt. I see what you mean. Pretty sure my brother has some of that stuff lying around. Might just "borrow it" and give it a try. Love the detail that he put into that P-47. Cheers mate!
Great build, good imagination to the scene of the diarama 10 out of 10 .
Thanks mate! Really appreciate that! Glad you liked it! Cheers!
Excellent build Pete, I think the figures really put that bus on the next level. Thanks for the warning about the Roden decals, I only have one kit by them in the stash and it has a huge RAF roundel decal for the top of the Rolls Royce armoured car, I may have to be prepared to spray it on instead.
Thanks Martin. Really appreciate that. This was my first Roden kit, and really happy with the way it all (mostly) went together okay. Really nice detail on the instrument decals, but when they just cracked up without being touched, that was one of those, "Bugger' moments. Hopefully this one just a one off. Cheers mate!
@@PetesKits 🤣 don't you just hate that Bugger moment, it usually only ever happens when everything is going fantastically great!
@@martinoconnor4314 Tell me about it. Had one the other day while building an Italeri Panzer I. It's got tiny individual track links (82 a side), separate lifting hooks, and all sorts of tiny bits to lose. So what does the Carpet Monster eat? A largish towing assembly from the rear....could I find it? Nope. Not even after moving everything twice, and crawling around on my aching knees. Had to scratch build one. Now that was a 'Bugger!" moment! 🙄
Great video, and I love the end result!
Thanks for that! Really happy you liked it! Cheers!
Cool model.
I had these models when I was a teenager
Yeah the reason was they were motagram!!!¡
Nice one Pete, I have the 1996 boxing and to be honest yours looks like the better kit with the link and length tracks and the much nicer figures. I've ordered the Eduard PE set to jazz up the fighting compartment as with only two figures in my version there's going to be a lot more interior on show. The thing that I really don't like about this kit is the exterior molded on tie down loops for the canvas cover, they will have to go and be replaced with fine wire. Other than that I'm quite looking forward to splashing some glue and paint on this one!
Hi mate. Yeah, I don't see why Tamiya (and others) don't give you a full compliment of crew for open fighting compartment AFV's like they have with this one. Guess it sells their figure kits but..... And yeah, the Link & Length tracks are really nice. I don't mind rubber band tracks, or individual links, but Link & Length are much easier (and quicker) to put together, and look pretty good. Cheers mate!
@@PetesKits Cheers Pete, I don't have a problem with rubber band tracks either and I can't really see why others hate them so much, its easy enough to get a decent sag on them, but I do prefer L&L or individual links as it gives an option to build a tracked vehicle with a broken track. Luckily I do have a set of Hobbyboss (Tristar?) AFV Crew figures that may get involved with the Wespe.
@@martinoconnor4314 Hi Martin, Yeah. I don't really get why some people have such anger towards rubber band tracks. Never makes sense to me. But to each his own. I have a lot (probably too many) of tank, and AFV, figure kits, and they come in very handy for filling in the gaps so to speak! Always nice to have a few people standing around to give scale to a kit! Cheers!
A nice kit Pete, I'll look out for this one, thanks for the review.
Thanks mate. This is not a bad one to pick up if you can. Cheers!
hi dear Pete, how are you?thank for this nice review,;i would like this;i never see the kit 89619,i have in my stash the Tiger I Tamiya with metal tracks and aluminium barrel 89628!;there where 2 versions;one with Zimmerit and the other without, the Wespe italian version interest me!i have the normal kit;cheers Patrick🤗👍
Hi Patrick. Glad you liked this review. I've always had a thing for the Wespe, and this is a really nice one to pick up. I like that Tiger I of yours with the metal tracks and barrel. That's one I have never seen. Must keepan eye out for that one. Cheers!
I have this kit, nice kit , tamiya later kits are much more crisper than there earlier kits, the vehicle is also know ,as the wasp, good review.
Yes. The newer kits benefit a lot from computer moulding techniques, and the detail is much nicer. Glad you liked the review! Cheers mate!
This kit cane out in the late 90s,. This kit is the same thing but with link and length tracks and new figures.
@@willthorson4543 Yes, it came out in 1996, under Kit No. 35200. Although that one only had 2 figures and rubber band tracks, unlike this one.
Nice one Pete, just bought this kit after watching your review. Cheers mate!
Thanks mate! Glad to feed the addiction!😅Cheers!
@@PetesKits 😂 like I really need encouragement!
@@martinoconnor4314 😆😆😆
Looks pretty good, does it include the first aid decal "Verbandkasten" I couldn't see it on the sheet ?, thanks for the review.
Yes it does. If you have a look at the decal pic at 6:44 in the video you can see it's part of the Red Cross decal. You also notice that Miniart have been cautious and left out the swastika symbol on all the helmet decals, and not completed the 'SS' decal either. Cheers!
@@PetesKits Thanks mate, I ordered a set from Jadlam, 👍
@@chelseachelseaboy No worries! Anytime! Cheers mate!
Hi dear Pete;superb kit!i go immediatly pick one;it costs 10 euros in Europe!he worst it!thanks for the tip;i love these little products;cheers Patrick
Hi Patrick. Yes, I love these little accessory kits as well. So handy for adding extra detail to vehicles, or just changing the gear that your figures are carrying. Cheers mate!
Nice one Pete, it's an excellent looking set. It makes the British Infantry & Tank Crew weapon set look a bit poor, no decals, PE or maps and magazines.
Thank Martin. I do like this one, especially with the "paper" bits and pieces. But like you said if they can add PE, maps and stuff to this German set, why not to other accessory kits? Guess they have their reasons... Cheers mate!
@@PetesKits Oddly enough the British Infantry & Tank crew Weapons set is a couple of quid more expensive than this German set on ebay UK. Obviously the expression "Less is more" is referring to Miniart accessory kits! 😂
@@martinoconnor4314 That is odd, considering they're just across the ditch (well almost) to you, and they have to come around the world to us. Blame Brexit? 🤣
@@PetesKits Aren't Tamiya kits expensive in Australia yet Japan is much closer to you than it is to us? 🤔
@@martinoconnor4314 Too true my friend, too true. The older ones are cheap as chips but the newer ones, yeah, they are much higher than they should be. And as for the kits coming out of China, like Trumpeter, Dragon, Border, and so on, higher than Tamiya, sometimes rediculously so. 🙄
Nice one Pete, never built one of these but seeing as they are one of the cheapest Tamiya 1/35 tank kits here in the UK it is certainly worth buying one just to practise different weathering methods on.
Nice one Pete, after watching your unboxing of this kit I thought I'd get one of these. After watching you build it I've changed my mind! 😂 It looks like way more work than I could be bothered with and the need for aftermarket guns and no opening hatches killed the idea for me.
Yeah, this is a very basic kit as far as detail is concerned. I picked it up as it was cheap, and really, to try out some weathering/mud techniques (and maybe do a WWI dio that never happened 🙄) Cheers!
A nice review of what looks to be a very worthwhile kit if you can find it.
I agree. Even though this is the old moulds from the original release, it's not a bad kit, and still very popular. But, like you say, hard to find, even though Tamiya did re-release it, it seems to have dried up very quickly. Would love to get my hands on another one myself! Cheers!
It would take me a month of Sundays to put those tracks together, but it looks a great kit, thanks for the review Pete.
Know what you mean. Just finished putting some Tamiya individual tracks together. They fitted together really well, and glueing them was easy, but cutting them off the sprue and, trimming off the excess sprue bits, and then, counting them 3 times to make sure you have 99 links for one track, and 100 for the other. Now that it the tedious bit! Thanks for looking in! Cheers!
hi dear Pete;how are ypu?i'm very happy for you for the 5 dollars!!😁the pattern's wheels can be masked by mud;Urss had much mud puddle in their country!i love the 6 wheels trucks;cheers Patrick👍
Hi Patrick! Yes, masking the wheels with lots of russian mud is definitely the solution! Hope your days are like ours! Clear blue skies, warm weather, and a cool breeze! Cheers !
