This video is part 2 in the series where I am re-handling a vintage Cutco butchers knife. In part one I removed the old composite handle and glued up the new green canvas micarta one. In this part I shape and sand the handle. I used stainless steel pins as well as a stainless steel lanyard tube. Stay tuned for part 3 where I sharpen it and make a sheath for the knife.

Dude a collins brush axe! I am beginning to think you are starting to fancy the Maine style double bits ha ha I do like that better than the diamond eye. Btw what a steal on that collins double.
Thanks man! I'm actually pretty excited for the brush axe. I've got a vintage handle with some over strike damage that I think i can clean up and pair with it! Should make for a fun and useful project!
That champion blacksmith cut off is neat too.
I thought so too! That stamp is pretty cool looking and clean. I would love to eventually get into some blacksmithing but that will be way down the road haha
I love the stickers man! That rafter is actually a super sweet head. The plumb takes the cake though. I didn’t get the 6 pound Kentucky pattern plumb. I’m super bummed about it. The auction ended at 1 am and I set an alarm and everything just missed it.
I've definitely missed a lot of heads I've planned on and set alarms for. A few have been while changing diapers haha. More always come along 👍👍 and thanks man! I'm excited to clean up the plumb for sure! I think the welds will come off easy enough.
All really cool finds. The Connie is sweet, love the tomahawk and those stickers look fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks man! Some stickers Will definitely be heading your way soon! I need to get some trades boxed up and make a trip to the post office haha. 👍👍
Good for you not doing a bull crap wood burned handle like most forks on UA-cam, spend a little more time on the polishing off the grind. Axe looks like it could do some good chopping!
Thank you Sir. I know lots of guys love burning the handles but it's not quite my style I prefer the natural wood. As far as the edge i used some diamond hones after hand filing thus the swirl marks. In my mind it was one of those points of diminishing returns. It's glassy to the touch so it's got low drag, and being a work axe she's going to get a bit scuffed up. I do agree a nicely polished bevel would look good on it though!
Nice!
Thank you Sir 👍👍 much appreciated!
Your leather skills are really coming along. Beautiful axe!
Thanks Brett!!! I'm definitely enjoying the leather work more and more. I'm also learning with every new sheath I make.
One of my firsts and one of my favs as well! Have had many diff handles on mine but now just keep it on a curved 28” :). Beautiful axes. Was a b*tch reprofiling for chopping LOL
Haha thanks Buddy! I definitely spent a couple hours working on this one. My 3² plumb Dayton that I used for the handle shaping series really fought me though. The temper and steel on that axe is great. A good vintage file cuts but progress is very slow. Very tough stuff.
Cool finds as you know the Connecticut is my favorite, and that's a good one. Darren
Thanks Darren! The Connie is definitely what caught my eye. I'm super happy with how it cleaned up. I'll absolutely have to do a video hanging it in the future!
That’s an almost perfect Flint Edge. Probably my favourite Connie.
Thanks Joey! I was super excited to add it to the collection! I've already made a short of cleaning it up a bit! It will be up in the next week or so.
Nice finds! Love the stickers!
Thanks Chad! I'll definitely be sending you some when I send the trade. I promise I haven't forgotten about it haha.
@ Awesome!! I appreciate it. No rush, I’m sure you’re busy.
@TheCandBExperience It will be a fun project so I'm definitely excited for it!
Can count on you Nate, to have an early Am Saturday video! Thank you! Totally rocking one of those stickers on my truck if I’m lucky enough to get one! LOVE IFMH series! For once a rafting pattern NOT labeled correctly! Maybe we can work something out for that? LOL so many eBay Dayton, Michigan and Yankee patterns posted as “rafting” or “woodsman” pattern LOL. Anything to get clicks and interest! I have a 5# true temper kelly works Vulcan rafter BUT it’s pitted to hell and no ridges? Weird. But beautiful centerline and profile! Oh sent your box! Send you a tracking in a bit. Hope the storm doesn’t delay it to bad! And yes, you know I def have my eye on that Collins Leggy! Wanna trade for the Kelly Perfect Db which is hung on a WRT handle of sorts with a Purple Heart wedge! As we’re both not DB guys but we both have DB’s LOL. FBMP can def have some gems. It’s how I found my ONE local picker I get anything around here from! Better keep that TT Connie for Yourself this time! LOL. No worries on the texting, we are all busy and I don’t even have kids! Great video man!
I wanted that collins badwhen I saw it on market place but it was a litte to far drive at that moment. Let me know if you want to part with it. Thanks.
Hey James! Very cool that you're semi local! Yeah I messaged the guy when it first posted but couldn't go pick it up until about 4 days later. I was very surprised nobody else snagged it. As things sit it may be going to the axe buddy that made me the shop sign and hat for something from his collection, but if that doesn't happen I'll absolutely let you know!!!
Haha thanks Mike I appreciate it! The unstamped rafter isn't spoken for so I'm definitely open to talks haha. You know me! I think my one buddy back home may be hooked in on the legitimus but I'm also getting another in a potential trade so I'll keep you updated buddy!
@@IronOxAxeAndTool thanks brother! No worries! We’re still in the middle of the CT/great neck - plumb jet wing Jersey/hudson bay trade that’ll eventually happen! Just got 8 inches of snow! Gd! LOL. If I got 8”, I bet you got a foot?
I have one very similar and use it all the time
It's super well built and I have really enjoyed having it in the shop. This past summer I picked up a Prentiss Monarch I plan to clean up at some point!
Clear explanations!
I appreciate it Brett! The shorts have been fun to make.
This is the first time I seen someone with more axes than me. 🇺🇲
Haha the collection is ever growing. Just tonight I realized I've definitely outgrown the loose head storage. If you're curious I have a fee videos up when I go through the whole collection...... fair warning they take a while to get through haha.
I know it seems like they just don't make them like they used to. I haven't shopped for a modern axe in a couple years now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge brother! 👊🤙🏽💯🔥🪓⛺🫡🫡🫡🙏
I appreciate it man! And I'm with you! There are a few modern ones that have caught my eye but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.
I'd like to see a high centerline on new manufactured axes.
I absolutely agree Joey! Even if they don't offer it on every head, it would be nice to see some out there.
Hi, very interesting video. Is there a particular reason that you don’t oil inside the eye of the axe head? If I were to guess I would say that maybe oiling in the eye can make the handle less secure. But then it will still be prone to rust. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. Cheers.
Thanks for checking out the video! There are a couple of reasons I chose not to oil the inside of the eye. One was to save time as I had a lot of heads to get through. But the main reason was when hanging the heads I like the inside of the eye to be a bit dirty and rusty so I can see the contact marks on the handle easily. 👍 then right before the final seating of the head it can get a quick cleaning and touch of boiled linseed oil if you'd like.
@ Thanks for the fascinating reply, that makes a lot of sense. Who knew rusty skid marks can be a good thing!
Absolutely! Ignore what your mother used to tell you. Team skidmark bahaha
I don't know how I missed this video. I have ebonized axe handles before, and you can actually add tannin to the wood to make it even darker. I'm actually going to be doing a screwdriver handled this week
Very cool! I definitely need to mess around with it all some more. This whole experimenting was kimd of shooting from the hip
Absolutely, love octagonal handles on hammers, but I was not a fan on axes at first. They definitely are growing on me and feel good in the hand.
I love how they look. But I honestly haven't swung one for a super long time. I should have given a better close up but that vintage one is rounded where your non dominant hand rests at the swell. So probably the bottom 5 inches or so.
@IronOxAxeAndTool that's cool
Nate! Love when you drop straight facts! Thank you! And what beautiful handles! I just made my first on a hardware store boys axe handle I hung the CT boys axe on. Came out nice. It’s all about how you start it, once you make those sections there is no turning back!
Thanks Mike!!! And Very true. All octagon handles are not created equal. Then even after you need to break the edges enough but not too much haha. That vulnerability vintage one is perfectly thin in my book. I really need to duplicate it.
Nice!
As always, I appreciate it Brett!!!
Nice leather work bud! 🤙🏽💯🔥🫡
Thanks!! It was definitely a fun little project!
The handles, the edge, and the sheath all came out very nice. Your timing on the video edit, it's great. All around fantastic project and video. Burnishing is all about heat and friction. Now I have to go and play with other things to see what I can come up with.
I appreciate it man!!! I definitely want to try making something out of some micarta scrap! I was super impressed with how much better it worked!
@@IronOxAxeAndTool yeah, because of watching this.I want to practice with some different things.
Definitely let me know if you find a new favorite!
@IronOxAxeAndTool I will
You do awesome leatherwork Nate! The entire project turned out great. Keep doing it man!
Thanks Chad! I appreciate it. I'm always learning something new on every leather project! It's certainly a fun hobby!
Very nice.
Thanks Brett! It should come in handy when BBQ season rolls back around!
Dang that's nice !!
Thanks, Joey! It was a fun little project for sure. Next week will like be an "It Followed Me Home" episode, so stay tuned!
Nice job on the sheath looks great! I always look forward to seeing your content on Saturday mornings Looks like you have a nice wide on that knife When do we get to see a video of a Woodstock addition to the shop?😊
Damn spellcheck woodstove is what I meant
Thanks Mike I really appreciate it! I love sharing what I've got going on in the shop with you guys. As far as the wood stove, that's located in my den in the house. We don't heat with it exclusively just when we're feeling like having a fire. The new heater for the shop is a vent free gas one. I would love to put another small wood stove in there at some point but the gas one is nice for when I just want to spend a few hours out there and then can shut it down quickly without worrying about it.
Autocorrect has gotten me on more than one occasion haha👍
You modest bastard! LOL. Your work is incredible dude. And yes, it is getting better and better each time! LOL Sending you some waxed heavy duty thread, I have so much!, you won’t run out now, If their colors you can use LOL. I don’t even sew, so all You brother! What rivet kit did you buy? I really like the pass through style where you can flush cut and peen! And they’re a perfect size too! You have a link? Or Hobby Lobby? Nicely done dude!!
Thanks Buddy I appreciate it! I still feel like I'm learning with every leather project I do. As far as the rivets, I pick them up on Amazon. They usually sell by weight. So if you get the longer shank ones you get less but they can be used on thicker stuff. They are a size 12 though so that's the diameter of them. I'll toss a link below to the 1in ones I got. amzn.to/40EIsh9
I put together a new fireside axe for this coming camping season. 3.5LBS beveled Michigan on a 20 inch handle. Can't wait to try it out !
That sounds like a nice fireside splitter! I can definitely see the extra weight in the head helping 👍👍👍
Great video Nate. I have a box I have been keeping heads in that i need to fix. Any and all content is fine with me.
Thanks buddy! I enjoyed doing it so figured you guys might like joining along!
How about a laminated palm swell video!? A how to! Maybe when you're doing the axe build. Just a suggestion. And I also heard that commenting helps the algorithm... So you will probably read some random comments from me pretty often 🤪 Thanks for sharing 🤙🏽🪓🔥💯
Haha commenting, liking and sharing indeed helps videos and the channel grow so I do appreciate it! I definitely like the idea on doing a video for how i laminate palm swells!
@IronOxAxeAndTool awesome! I look forward to it! 🤙🏽👊💯🔥 Take care! 🙏
I’ve had that heel kick up before it’s no fun lol.. 😮pros and cons of long handles. I’m procrastinating as well but I got you buddy.
Haha I feel like everyone who's done some carving or kindling splitting can relate lol.
I was super curious about that axe, I missed my chance at a 1800s skinny eyed axe head at the flea market for weeks until I finally decided I’d pay the 20 bucks went up there and it was gone. Yours is very interesting with that large pole plus lugs. I order fat wood too. I’ve gone and collected it but the amount you need to start my fire insert it’s just so much easier to order. I enjoyed the video and all the unique tools in it.
It's definitely a neat head. Looks to be multiple piece construction or at the very least the high carbon insert goes all the way back to the eye. It performs really well. Those old PA blacksmiths knew their stuff. I'm always looking out for the larger ones but they usually go stupid high on ebay. I was lucky enough to snag this one and another similar to it for under 50 bucks. One of those scenarios where I hit buy really quickly lol. I usually use about 3 sticks of the fatwood because I get a little lazy when making the fire. If I took more time and got more tinder together and shaved it down I could probably get away with one...... or toss in a few sticks and some kindling and hit it for a few seconds with the torch and she's off haha. We have traditional brick fireplace in our living room but I prefer the wood stove we have in the den. It's one of the ones with the glass doors so you still get the nice light.
Every time I see that locust handle I smile I love that wood.
I really enjoy it as a handle material. This summer I need to get out at my parents place and try to split out some more billets!
That was therapeutic to watch. Just do what you like to do Nate. Folks will watch man.
Thanks Chad! It's definitely just as therapeutic to do. One of those activities that helps clear the mind in the shop 👍
Love the axe builds but I appreciate all your content Sir
Thanks Mike! It's good to hear you guys are enjoying all the stuff not just the axes 👍👍 there will certainly be more of both coming!
Man, I would love to send you some pine bc that’s all that’s around me! I live basically in the Pine Barrens! It’s just pine and oak. Which, the oak is great, I can burn it green and it does great too! Would LOVE maple around me! We have all types of wood randomly dropped from birds over the years so I have everything from birch to cherry and Japanese maple. I think the Great Neck I’m gonna send you would make a great house axe splitter. But, you def have to make a video of making a handle for it. I put it on a handle I cut the palm swell side to use for something else, (I use old palm swells and fawnsfoots for file handles I make) just to use it for this purpose one winter! Great asmr video dude!
It definitely looks like it will make a nice house axe with that head size! I'll try to remember to toss some maple wedges in the package when I send them! Glad you guys liked the kindling splitting. It's definitely just as relaxing to do as it is to watch👍👍
That's so true, buddy. I'm glad you let everyone know what a true cruiser is and how many people buy these 4 pound cruisers on eBay, lol
Haha right! Super rare, barn find 4lb cruiser and they are asking hundreds lol
@IronOxAxeAndTool Yeah Super Rare Rafting Connecticut pattern Cruiser axe selling as it was found. Lmbo.
Thanks for sharing bud! So what do they call the double bit hatchets. Like the 1.5lb? I've seen them labeled as saddle axes or saddle cruisers. 😜 Lol! Thanks again 🤙🏽💯🔥
That's my understanding as well. The saddle cruisers are those double bit hatchets. I believe only a few makers manufactured them Norlund and Collins (and if I'm not mistaken. Norlund was manufactured by Collins so the overlap in patterns makes sense) 👍👍
@IronOxAxeAndTool ahhhh! Well that clears up all my confusion on the double bits. But you're absolutely right as far as eBay sellers labeling them, and me not knowing for sure lol! 😂 Well I'm glad you're sharing content that clears a lot of the confusion for me and others that may be fairly new to axe collecting. Thanks again 👊🤙🏽🔥💯🪓🙏
Happy to help and hopefully it helps you score some neat axes! 👍
I always measure the eye on double bit axes or heads I come across now, thanks to your longer video on cruisers. That's a nice looking one you have there too.
Thanks man! I've definitely found it to be the most reliable way. I not saying they don't exist, but I have never seen a 2² stamped cruiser with a full size eye 👍.
Love that cruiser, and that hang came out really nice. Thanks for helping me find mine.
Haha thanks Buddy! I fully admit I'm a bad influence like that lol
Great video and nice cruiser!! ❤❤
Thanks Ed! Much appreciated!
Thanks for posting this video! I have the same vise, my vise nut is completely stripped. Have any ideas on who has parts for these or what the thread is? Looks like a 7/8” 4 TPI acme or square thread. I was thinking I could find a coupler type nut and weld it on to existing part? Appreciate any insight you may have. Thanks
Thanks for checking out the video! I know there are lots of vintage vise groups on Facebook. One of the members there may know of reproduction parts. I wonder if a local machine shop could cut you some threads in either a slave or a replacement part. Ebay may also have one but that may be a gamble verifying it's the right size and thread pitch. If you come up with a solution definitely let me know! They are fantastic vises.
I really enjoyed your video. I have one of these oilers. What is that tool rack called that you hung the oiler holder on. I looked on your channel for how it was built. Can you recommend a video in how to make one? Thanks
Thanks for watching and the kind words! It is a French cleat system that I have in the wall behind my workbench. The concept allows for a lot of modularity with the organization which is really handy for when needs and tools change. Tons of wood workers have done videos on it but I will leave a link below to one that I think is a great explanation 👍 ua-cam.com/video/usFRvasGW70/v-deo.htmlsi=-Oo4DjZJaHZXTXdU
Btw, since I’m watching your collection videos for an upcoming trade - that Broad axe around the 23min mark - looks like it was a black smith out of Cohoes, NY - forged these for all different local hardware stores, so I see them with all different names but all say ‘forged steel in Cohoes, NY’. But that handle, most def 99% sure it says ‘Lakeside’ on the tongue there. Lol.
Very interesting! I'll have to take a closer look when I drag it out next time! Thanks Mike!
Yes Sir! What a beautiful collection of different patterns to display as well. Great job showing the differences between the more common vintage axe heads.
Thanks Nick! I still rambled a bit and when editing had to change the speed of the video to 1.5 in order for to fit. I figured it would be a good topic to drag out some heads and shown them off while hopefully helping some new people to the hobby 👍👍
Gotta get me one !
They really are super handy Joey! I definitely plan on picking up a few more larger ones when flea market season rolls back around 👍
Love that Jersey.
Thanks Joey! That one is a favorite also. The combo with the killinger red elm handle just feels right. The high centerline always gets me too!
Fantastic video Nate. I know this will definitely help others starting out.
Thanks man!! I figured it was a good enough reason to drag out some heads for people to look at even if they already knew the patterns haha.
