Kelapur, a modest village near Pandarkawda in Yavatmal district, might seem small in size, but its spiritual and historical significance reverberates across time and space. This village is not only home to the revered temple of Goddess Jagdamba, but it also stands as a witness to centuries of history, legend, and devotion. The temple itself is an ancient Hemadpanthi-style structure, rooted in the 14th century, and is a crucial religious destination on the Nagpur-Hyderabad Highway, attracting devotees from Maharashtra and Telangana.
Kelapur’s significance is further deepened by the fact that it was once a capital for the Gond kings and served as a refuge for the last Peshwa of the Maratha Empire, Bajirao Peshwa II, during his exile in 1818. This fusion of legend, history, and spirituality has made Kelapur a unique and significant location in the religious and historical map of India. In more recent history, Kelapur played a key role during the waning days of the Maratha Empire. In 1818, when Bajirao Peshwa II was forced into exile by the advancing British forces, he took refuge in this village. As described in the book by the famous historian Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare, Bajirao Peshwa II and his army sought shelter in Kelapur, where they fought against British commanders Adams and Smith. This historical footnote adds a layer of intrigue to the village, weaving together the Maratha and British eras with the temple’s ancient legacy.
The core of the temple's spiritual significance lies in the sanctum sanctorum, where a stunning idol of Goddess Jagdamba sits. This idol is self-evident (*Swayambhu*), meaning it was not crafted by human hands but emerged naturally, further emphasizing the temple's divine origin.
In 1981, the youth of Pandarkawda together and formed the Ekta Mandal Restoration Committee, which began the arduous task of reviving the temple’s lost grandeur. This movement sparked a resurgence of faith and devotion, leading to the formal declaration of the Sri Jagdamba Sansthan as Kelapur Public Trust in 1988.
Since then, the temple has been meticulously restored. Trees, plants, and flowers were planted to enhance the beauty of the temple’s premises, while new facilities such as Bhakta Niwas (rest houses for pilgrims), a Mangalkaryalaya (ceremonial hall), and even a Children’s Park were added. These improvements have not only beautified the temple but have also made it more welcoming and accessible to the thousands of devotees who visit every year. Jagdamba Devi temple is of Hemadpanthi architecture, a style that emerged during the Yadava dynasty and is characterized by the intricate use of interlocking stones. Built in the 14th century, the temple’s architecture displays the skill and artistry of ancient builders who constructed it without using cement or mortar. The temple stands as a testament to the advanced engineering techniques of its time and remains a marvel for modern architects and historians alike. Kelapur may be a small village, but its impact is far-reaching. Situated along the Nagpur Hyderabad Highway, just 3 kilometers from Pandarkawda and 40 kilometers from the Maharashtra-Telangana border, the temple is a well-known pilgrimage destination in the Vidarbha region. Its easy accessibility from Nagpur (170 kms) and Yavatmal (80 kms) makes it a convenient stop for both spiritual seekers and history enthusiasts. Kelapur lends its name to the entire taluka, with all government administrative offices located in the nearby town of Pandarkawda. The Jagdamba Devi temple of Kelapur stands as a confluence of history, legend, and spirituality. From its roots in ancient mythology to its role in the political upheavals of the Maratha era, the temple has been a silent witness to many pivotal moments in Indian history.
