The Shri Ambabai/Mahalaxmi Temple of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India, is one of the three and half Shakti Peethas listed in various puranas of Hinduism. According to these writings, a Shakti Peetha is a place associated with Shakti, the goddess of power. The Kolhapur Shakti Peetha is of special religious significance being one of the six places where it is believed that one can either obtain salvation from desires or havethem fulfilled.
Shri Mahalakshmi Devi or Ambabai in Kolhapur is Goddess Lakshmi, wife of Lord Vishnu. Many scriptures clearly mention that Lakshmi Devi, wife of Vishnu killed Kolasura and Lakshmi Devi as living in Kolhapura or Karavirapura.
Ambabai Temple (also known as Mahalaxmi Mandir) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, who resides here as Supreme Mother Mahalakshmi and is worshipped by locals as Ambabai.
The temple takes its name from Ambabai/Mahalaxmi,and it is believed that the divine couple reside in the area. The temple belongs architecturally to the Chalukya empire and may have been first builtin circa 700 AD. Mounted on a stone platform, the image of the four armed and crowned goddess is made of sandstone.
Ambabai (mahalaxmi) is wife of God Balaji ( Venkateshshwar of Tirupati, Andrapradesh). People visit Kolhapur to pray Goddess Ambabai (Mahalaxmi) for a peaceful & healthy life. It is considered that the darshan of Shri. Balaji of Tirumala is incomplete without visiting goddess Mahalaxmi of Kolhapur.
This is the place where maa Sati's 3 eyes fell. The Kolhapur Shakti Peetha is of special religious significance being one of the six places where it is believed that one can either obtain salvation from desires or have them fulfilled. Kolhapur Peeth is also known as Karvir Peeth or Shree Peetham.

KAKAD ARTI
Naivedya: - Butter and sugarAfter the opening of the temple in the morning, the Goddess KakadAarti begins at 5.30 am with mouthwash and foot worship of the Goddess, offering butter and sugar.
MORNING MAHAPUJA
At 8.30 am the bell is rung and Goddess Panchamrut Abhishek, Shodshopchar Pooja is performed and KhiriNaivaidya is offered.
AFTERNOON MAHAPUJA
Panchamrut Abhishek Shodshopchar Pooja is performed at 11.30 am and Mahanaivaidya is offered at Puranpoli on Friday at 8.15 pm Mangalarati is started.
ALANKAR POOJA
Alankar Puja is performed by offering Mahavastra to the Goddess and wearing traditional gold ornaments on the body of the Goddess.
DHUPARTI
The bell rings at 8 pm and starts at 8.15 am and after offering to Shri,LaduKaranja'sNaivaidya, Shankhtirtha is performed.
SHEJARTI
Neighbors used to offer milk and sugar at 10.15 pm. The temple closes at 10.30 pm.
The temple is amazing. Excellent structure and archeology. Maa is so pretty and significant. Mind becomes peaceful and relaxed. The temple belongs, architecturally, to the Kannada Chalukya empire, and may have been first built circa 700 AD. Mounted on a stone platform, the image of the four armed and crowned goddess is made of gemstone and weighs about 40 kilograms. The image of Mahalakshmi carved in black stone is 3 feet in height. The Shri yantra is carved on one of the walls in the temple. A stone lion, the vahana of the goddess, stands behind the statue.
