Piecing the Puzzle of The Power of the Daleks: Episode One, Scene 1
Perhaps one of the most important episodes in the history of Doctor Who and it's missing. The opening scene of The Power of the Daleks is a mammoth 7 minutes long. While we have very little left there is still enough to get a good idea of how it all looked on screen!

    Doctor Who looks great on VHS and lame on Blu-Ray. Those early effects (especially the 60s) were very low budget even for tv, even for the era. They do not hold up as well under HD the same way changing black and white to color artificially makes it look worse. I was disappointed when Pluto replaced the live classic Who with Blu-Ray versions. The title sequence especially suffers. The slit scan and howlaround effects looks so much more awesome on VHS. Starfield one too.

    I'd suggest that one reason for the break in recording before the mirror inlay shot was at least partly to rig a hidden rigid support for the mirror. In the days before motion tracking, compositing two essentially static images together betrayed even the most miniscule unsteadiness. However steady an actor tried to be in holding the mirror it would never be good enough for a convincing result.

    At least we've got episodes three through six, and the 2013 animation of one and two. We could have had the whole story; Nigeria had apparently screened this story along with _The Aztecs_ and _Galaxy 4_ in '73. However, it was prints of _The Keys of Marinus_ from a much earlier run, almost completely redundant (except for retaining the demise of the Brains of Morphoton in episode 2 and the Next Episode caption in episode 6), that got found with those two stories in '84 instead. Weird how things happen. Seeing how _The Time Meddler_ 3 is said to have only survived because the extant print and the negative got mixed up with the master tape and the negative respectively of _The Time Warrior_ 3... (Certainly no copies of TTW were struck between the making of _Whose Doctor Who_ in '76 and the recovery of an NTSC print of TTW 3 from somewhere in Nebraska in '79)

      @DrWhoFanJ 23 дні тому

      We have camera scripts of some kind for (almost) every DW episode. The clips have been identified as coming from repeat broadcasts (somehow, apparently), so they must have been done in at least some knowledge of what bits to film, but that’s basically all we know about them at this point. We don’t even know who it was that recorded them originally!

    9:40 I’ve long suspected that’s from the end of the line "Are you coming, YOU TWO‽" (relevant section capitalised) from that first swamp scene. It would fit with him calling to the still-in-the-TARDIS Ben & Polly, and he could be simply returning his hat to his head from having dropped it during the preceding action sequence.

    • @ryankomitor7391
      @ryankomitor7391 23 дні тому

      On the 2016 release of the Power animation (I do not have the 2020 Special Edition) the surviving footage feature syncs that shot to “are you coming you two” and indeed it’s a much better sync than “are you not”.

    • @DrWhoFanJ
      @DrWhoFanJ 23 дні тому

      @@ryankomitor7391 You should have the SE. The 2016 release is officially deprecated and was always considered an embarrassment by the team owing to the large reduction in production time while they were already working on it (12 months became 7, then 6, all to hit the 50th anniversary of its first broadcast). Sizeable chunks of that version are literally first drafts because there simply wasn’t time to do anything more than that.

    My memories of watching as a seven-year old include a filmed insert, in ep.2 I think, in which we see (from Steven’s POV) a zoom-in on Hartnell dressed in a grey robe (don’t think the hood was up, but I’m not sure as there’s a picture of a hooded Hartnell on the original cover of the Target novelisation.) Like Steven, I thought this was the Doctor disguised for some reason, so I was puzzled when the credits rolled with ‘Abbot of Amboise William Hartnell’ - in the usual font used as far back as Unearthly Child by the way! The Radio Times synopsis for the following episode stated ‘Steven thinks he has seen the Doctor…’ and that put a seed of doubt in my mind as to whether all was as it seemed. My strongest memories of the story are in the final minutes, where we saw some graphic woodcut images of people being pushed into fires, and skulls and bones in the midst of said fires, followed by Steven raging at the Doctor in the safety of the TARDIS before apparently leaving ( and an interesting shot where we see him walking through the Police Box doors beyond the control room’s inner doors, about the only time this was done!) and the Doctor sadly reminiscing about his departed companions before the film insert of Dodo running towards the camera en route to the police box … but somehow I can’t recall whether that godawful prop mash-up was clearly shown, I think I’d have noticed the state it was in!
