Cheer~~the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept.😊
While critical pedagogy aims to challenge traditional educational practices and promote social justice, it often falls short in several key areas. Firstly, its overemphasis on power dynamics and oppression can lead to an overly politicized classroom environment, where education becomes a platform for advancing ideological agendas rather than fostering genuine learning and critical thinking. This can result in a biased presentation of information and stifled intellectual diversity. Secondly, critical pedagogy's focus on group identity and collective rights may overshadow the importance of individual agency and responsibility. By framing educational experiences primarily in terms of oppressor-oppressed dichotomies, critical pedagogy risks perpetuating a victim mentality among students and inhibiting their ability to develop resilience and problem-solving skills. Thirdly, the rejection of objective truth and promotion of subjective perspectives in critical pedagogy can undermine academic rigor and scholarly inquiry. By prioritizing personal experiences and subjective interpretations over empirical evidence and logical reasoning, critical pedagogy may hinder students' ability to engage critically with complex issues and develop a nuanced understanding of the world. Furthermore, critical pedagogy's tendency to prioritize social justice outcomes over educational outcomes may result in a neglect of academic standards and essential skills development. While it is important to address social inequalities within education, this should not come at the expense of academic excellence and the cultivation of essential competencies needed for success in various fields. Lastly, critical pedagogy's promotion of dialogue and collaboration among students and educators may inadvertently suppress dissenting voices and alternative perspectives. In an environment where certain viewpoints are privileged over others based on their alignment with critical pedagogical principles, genuine intellectual exchange and open-minded inquiry may be stifled.
Watching the schools built on these theories fail a generation of children is terrifying.
The anti intellectualism infesting the United States is oppressive and stunning.

Thanks for nothing Friere, your Critical Theory BS is completely undermining the purpose of education in the US today.

Hello! I have been studying Paulo Freire's thinking for 15 years. I would like to share my Doctoral Thesis with all of you. Link> bdtd.ibict.br/vufind/Record/UNB_adc2c4ff9f2e2b38ddb8a105c0372a42/Description Best regards, Prof. Dr. Augusto Charan
Was hitching CP to critical theory a good idea?
For Who?
There's no way to separate the two..
Says it all but I am restrained in the education system, square peg in a round hole trying to break out

You're a glutinous heaven with no self discipline
It's being paid for. This isn't an organic movement, and it's the very same forces who killed JFK- he even warned us about it. It's all become far too obvious for most people to see. Sweden just turned all of their Vikings relics into gold and silver bars because.... You know.. "racism". The wiping away of a subjugated populations history is integral to maintaining obedience in a culturally Marxist society. If you want to research the topic- don't listen to it's criticisms, you'll never get anywhere, listen to its justifications. There's hundreds of research papers out there from every educational institution you can name, and they are all pushing it and have been for a long time. I ask my mother, whom is nearly 80 years old if she remembered being taught about Communism and the Bolsheviks and she hadn't even heard of them. Then she told me about all of the radical things they would be asked to do to understand subjects (sociology, ethnography, anthropology)- they were all about socialism, Marxism and challenging Western democracy, yet they didn't give them these names. They instead ascribed these qualities to capitalism! It's the old bait and switch, and it's probably far too late to do anything about it but live in the light and love one another, and realize that we are all human beings. Each of us utterly, exactly the same. Human struggle emerges from differences, and the subsequent false dualities they create, and so we find ourselves in the world full of open ended arguments, half truths and convoluted thinking clouded by iron clad egos exclaiming hot is cold, and cold is hot. It can be hard to find meaning, but it exists in the infinitesimally small space between the "insider" and the "outsider". If you ever do come to understand it, good luck trying to explain to anyone :0
Any doctrine and any criticism are no usefulness
the song playing in the background tho fiiiiiire......
Same thing happened to me when I read the book. It changed me, met my perception and I was an immediate convert. My wife, who won the best teacher award for Rio de Janeiro, is a great admirer, as are most Brazilians. He was a true warrior, fought the system, changed conceptions, listened, and changed lives - still is. A wonderful leader for social justice.
This reminds me if that old quote, "If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything." Critical Pedagogy is a destructive communist mode.
Yep, convert is the right word. In the marxian faith, man becomes their own God and takes the place of creator by spreading the marxian dialectic way of thinking, to convince everyone that it is their moral duty to change, transform, and dismantle the existing society and every stabilizing structure of identity and family, to provide institutions better control over how people live, work, and even think. It doesn't seem to matter how many people starve or how many corpses of innocent people pile up, you will always say that the theory "needs updated" instead of admitting that the theory is wrong.

I Really Like The Video Paulo Freire and Critical Pedagogy From Your
it's remarkable that Giroux managed to last more than a semester at Miami University, Ohio. he must have bit his tongue rather hard all day.
@dagstidning BUR REALY. U SHUD READ DA BOOK BAYBAY. Freire never claimed that Pedagogy of the Oppressed was in any way radical. It was and still is the people on top of the educational system's political ladder that claimed it was radical. To those outside the educational system who are in favor of Freire's philosophy, it's radical because it isn't implemented. Terminology, dude. Also, you basically accidentally said that the Socratic method isn't critical. HERP DERP DERP
Are you still a fan of Paulo Freire's methods of introducing marxian privillage/oppression dynamics into children's education in order to "liberate" everyone from any stabilizing structure of identity, family, or tradition? Do you feel liberated yet?
@dagstidning "Sounds". Do you even know what it is?
"Progressive" education may very well have been a disaster for education in the US (as well as perhaps the most ridiculously named scam within the last 100 years), but it has been wildly profitable for the by now entrenched education elite in our country. "Progressive" education has served to build an ever-increasing divide between inner-city schools (where it is most often practiced) and suburban schools, and has justified ever-increasing funding for schools that are literally designed to fail.
Progressive schools are rare in the U.S. The philosophy is never about standardized tests rampant in public schools. Search the first sentence for more explanation by Kohn.
@@guitaracole81 I think you misinterpret what is meant by "progressive." Think more in terms of the progressive course of a disease. A progressive school is one in which teachers are not held to any standards other than loyalty to their union, and students will graduate with a proper Marxist background, but not necessarily with the ability to do simple arithmetic or read. Someone who is meant to loot shops of the petty bourgeoisie doesn't need to be literate, and having a student who can make change will only tempt them to try to conform to society and get a job.
Fair enough. But it's one thing to identify the pedagogy of Left fascism, another to actively combat it. How does one meaningfully deal with the color-based class racism and Marxist evangelicism of the fascist Left, when individuals like Paolo Freire have such wide acceptance amongst the wealthy leaders of the US education monopoly?
The rotten fruit will eventually implode upon itself. Fortunately many will have to suffer in between now and then. I was teaching English as a second language at a suburban Catholic parish west of Detroit. Most of my students are children of immigrants from Mexico and Latin America. I invited a neighbor who lived two doors down from me to help teach. She is Mexican-American. By the third session she brought someone who I did not know to assist. I was just happy to have another volunteer. After a few more sessions, he approached me with Pedagogy of the Oppressed. I asked him not to come back and he and my neighbor showed up the very next week. When I told him my relatives fought in the Greek civil War against the Communists. When they caught one of their own relatives who was a communist General they hung him from a tree. I told him so now you understand where I'm coming from. They never returned thank God I don't advocate violence but we still have Greek relatives in the former Soviet Union from Czech Rep and Slovakia to Ukraine. Freire teaches Marxism plain and simple. I've grown up in between Detroit and Ann Arbor and saturated with Marxist writings and teaching since I was a kid. Class warfare, oppressor versus oppressed Telltale songs of marxist darkness. Marxism is infested the Democratic party since the 1920s and 30s. Most Americans that are infected with cultural Marxism may be well-intentioned and nice people. Like the broken clock they're only right twice a day.
@@timfronimos459 Maybe the slow and gullible ones have no idea, but the multimillionaires and their trust fund socialist babies who violently push this crap know exactly what they're up to. "Liberating the oppressed" is the con they use on suckers. They think of themselves as our natural overlords and of us as cattle. "Liberation" for us is the furthest thing from their minds. Next time, listen critically to the way they address you and talk to you - patronizing, condescending, arrogant beyond belief. Whether or not you want to go along with them, it's never a conversation, it's always a one-way transmission. Thinking that their stupid, outrageously nonsensical ideology is devised through ignorance is a mistake. They know exactly what they are doing. The usefulness of Marxism to such people is the pseudo-ethical system it provides to justify mass terrorism, institutional thievery, slavery and mass murder. A socialist is not more trying to "liberate" you than the old slave masters though they were bringing Africans out of barbarism by forcing them to work to death in cotton and tobacco fields. And just in case you think that's a strained analogy, guess how communist China has managed to become a major cotton exporter. Look it up. It's not just nonsense. Public school education is over a half trillion dollar business, all controlled tightly by teacher unions. And that only count K-12; high school and college education together account for even more. And that carries over into every component of the white collar world. That's why the Left controls the media, including social media, the entitlements industry, the US federal and many state bureaucracies, the legal profession, and increasingly the medical profession. None of this is about helping anyone but themselves. They have leveraged themselves to control the educated elite, and has made it very clear that anyone who doesn't play ball will soon be out of a job. For those who do prove useful, they promise a place among the apparatchiks. You'd better be careful. People like that don't take rejection well.
@yukiomishima246 That is an excellent evaluation of Freire, and his thinly veiled agenda of using the schools to advance socialism and indoctrination. Just as John Dewey proposed, and something we are still trying to undo in the public schools. Progressive education has been a disaster for the US and we are only slowly working our way out of it.
I know this is an ancient comment by internet standards, but man have things gotten worse in education. There has been no working out of it.
How can asking questions and finding answers be socialism? The current tradition American educationis indoctrination that requires memorization and brainwashing that does not advance man's technological advancements. If Thomas Edison hadn't asked questions, the cell phone would have never evolved into today's world. Additionally, by design America is a socialist democracy.
@@vickiross-norris107 Not sure what your point is. Public education does not "brainwash" (you need to look up that term, to understand what it means and where it came from), and, yes, memorization is a needed function for having a working intellectual basis to exist in society. Indoctrination is such a "land mine" term that I don't know what you are referring to: Politics, Religion, Legal...? Forms of Government or Economic Systems can be forced onto people as indoctrination, but that is not always a bad thing. Asking questions is ALWAYS a great way to learn. Public Education can take credit for many of our technological advancements, but the cost has been to leave many less capable students in the dust. Finally, I don't think you will find any evidence that the USA Founders planned for a Socialist Democracy.

Simply excellent. Will go across and watch the full video. What an inspiration!
all six videos were fantastic! this conversation itself is a brilliant example of the work theory can do within an electronic and democratic public space. this project (which i would describe as a perfect example of praxis) has the potential of expanding the scope of critical pedagogy to a wider audience. thank you so much Dr. Giroux and Dr. Kincheloe.
Are you still a believer in this marxian faith, and a supporter of freire's method for introducing privillage/oppression dynamics into children's education in order to dismantle every stabilizing structure of identity, family, tradition and society? Do you feel liberated yet, or do you need to see every imperfect structure and every principled person burn before you will be satisfied?
@@gnostic-wolf Strange to see this. That was over a decade ago. Don’t know why this comment thread is still going on. I’m definitely not a Marxist. I do notice that most people speaking in favor of the video are talking about ideas, while others seem to focus more on name calling and ‘boogie-man’ terms (where in the world did you get the term “Marxian faith”??? I suppose an actual dialog would be better for both of us.
@@criticaljunkie who called you names? I'm going to assume your answer is: yes, you still believe in the marxian faith of critical pedagogy, and you still desire to institute abusive educational programs in schools to turn everyone's children into change agents for your destructive ideology, while proclaiming that you are actually just deprogramming them from the already "opressive dominant ideology," in order to sublate western societies, to abolish every stabalizing tradition, preaching through praxis, thumping your grievance gospels, and believing that it is all for the greater good.
Maybe that was unfair of me. You weren't directly calling me names. But you are spending a lot of time "telling me what I am and how it is". I guess genuine dialog is a bit hard to come by in the interwebs these days. Truth is, you may very well be a bot (in that case, I guess the joke is on me). If you're not a bot, well, I'm glad my 13 year old post gave you a chance practice some of your memes and to feel some 'righteous anger'.
@@criticaljunkie 😄 I spent zero time "telling you what you are or how it is." I simply asked if you still believed in the marxian faith preached by Henry Giroux, and Paulo Freire's methods for communist indoctrination through education. Your response has been: 1. Talking about how old the comment was. (Yeah, that was the point of asking the question in the first place.)😋 2. Saying: "I am definitely not a marxist." (You surely must be aware that the very terms you are using "the work Theory can do, praxis, critical pedagogy," these terms have come directly from Marxism and neo-marxism as it has evolved away from the singular paradigm of economic class, to be applied across every possible domain of identity and tied together through intersectionality. Every critical theory, of sex, race, education status, ability status, and so on, simply applies the marxist framework to a different identitarian domain. If you are a proponent of critical theory, it is misleading to say that you are not a marxist, since Theory operates in a dialectic framework identical to the marxist framework, simply layering economic privilege beneath other domains of privilege.) 3. Next, you just start talking generally about people who like the video in a positive light, and then creating a negative stereotype of "name-calling" people who are the "others." (Basically putting me into a camp with the bad "others" without ever addressing my question at all, which is a very communist thing to do, by the way.) 😳 You claim to want a dialog, while never actually saying anything, just diverting, obfuscating, and "other"-ing me. You did not address the question, so I made up an answer for you. Now you just accuse me of not even being human, and attempt to demean and invalidate me with, "I'm glad you get to practice your memes and feel some 'rightious anger.' 🤖 You don't actually seem to want a dialog, since all you employ is crybully tactics, insulting, demeaning, invalidating and other- ing, without ever providing any substantive answer to the original question, or any explanation as to why you do or do not still believe in "the work Theory can do." 😴 You never had to respond in the first place, but the way that you have has been just as petty and arrogant as you would expect from someone who subscribes to Theory. I suppose the answer to my question was evident right from the start. 🤗
This is a good primer for Freire's work. The lessons of critical pedagogy are most needed in the sectors of society that have the most 'education' in the conventional sense. Obviously everyone needs criticality of thought. But to me, it seems most necessary by those who have been brainwashed and propagandized the most. In my society, the United States, that is the white middle/upper middle class citizen. How can we implement these lessons where they are needed? How do we reach them?
What middle class it's almost gone and then it is also the undereducated that wasn't taught to look up things and Henry brings up something important that it used to be we talked about politics and we used to help each other. Then there is the religious thinker of the far right.
Are you still a believer in this marxian faith, and a supporter of freire's method for introducing privillage/oppression dynamics into children's education in order to dismantle every stabilizing structure of identity, family, tradition and anything that sustains the existing society? Do you feel liberated yet, or do you need to see every imperfect structure and every principled person burn before you will be satisfied?
Giroux, McLaren and Paulo Freire changed my life. I've told Giroux this myself when I met with him 4 years ago at Penn. This is an important interview, but the work to change people is in the crafting of important lessons, like the one I included above. peace
