Wide Band Air Fuel Ratio Sensor Testing
Infomercial for Pico and the Nerd Boys 😂, It seems that UA-cam techs get paid more for videos than the diagnosis on the cars they work on
Nah not me, I still get paid the ole fashion way, Views and comments do help Thanks for watching
Do u only look pattern or use some number? Like i always taught 500mV AC is the limit in ripple
I like the pattern, a certain spec. Is hard to nail down, so many variables, loads, engine speed ect. Test location plays a huge role. On this car the ripple was like 280 -300mv at the battery is not terrible, but the pattern was terrible. 500mv sounds high especially at the battery, but 300mv with a bad pattern is a failure.
Isn't it better to check the current rather than the voltage?
I usually do both, but this particular issue was so obvious with just voltage, I didn't bother getting the clamp out
Nice case study Mike! I really like your technique just using DC Couple. Very informative. Thank you for posting!
💯👍
Appreciate you Mr Carter. Thanks again for all the tips and videos. Are you planning on uploading any hybrid videos soon?
I don't see very many hybrid cars, Nissan doesn't have many, at least in my area . If something comes in I will try to document it though!
sweet thank you great videos as always helping us Nissan techs out.Just for comparison Royaltyautoservice shows ac ripple using ATS oscilloscope with a leaking diode
Nice . I will have to check it out!

great video , look forward to your video , great info , thanks
I appreciate that.
Thank you for fixing it the first time.
💯 You bet!
enjoyed the vid, thanks
Appreciate you watching 👍
Good job
Thanks 🙏
How do we do this on a generic snap on scope with out math channels? I have a 2009 Saturn cue that counts misfire on cylinder 6 but sitting in the seat it doesn’t Even feel like it’s missing. Trying to see if it’s a bad pcm or if it’s actually missing
Im not 100% sure, but I dont think you can on a S.O scope You coul howevver use a pulse sensor in the tailpipe to verify the mis-fire
New to the pico software good info.
💯
Thank you for sharing your findings
💯
Would like to see some Altima P0101 videos. I have a 2013 that keeps setting a P0101 and ECM number is not listed in the TSB for reprogramming. It did have the orange PCV/ replaced with black, cleaned Throttle body and replaced MAF. Voltage readings at ECM match service information.
We see a lot of throttle body replacement . Cleaning and idle volume doesn't seem to help. Of course all the basics must be looked at first.
@@CartersDiagnostics the only code was the P0101 and could complete CAT monitor and a couple of other readiness monitors when driven easy. Turned out to be a restricted exhaust due to previous CAT replacement leaving behind powdered material in front of secondary CAT causing the performance code.. VE test for the Win!
Great find 💯 Thank you for updating, its the best way for us all to learn
Excellent video. The scope is a window to the circuit regardless of signal speed.
Agree 100% 👍
Thank you for the great info on Autonerdz. I plan on having a Pico one of these days and love the fact that this comes with support. Thank you for a great understandable video!
Absolutely 💯,
As the compression starts at ATHMOSFERIC pressure do not expect a deeper exhaust pocket. It looks ok. There is an acceptable compression leak. I would worried about INT pocket as it looks very unusual. Ignition is always slightly retarded while cranking.
Agreed on the intake pocket being odd, Im trying to get verification from Nissan on the cam specs........Crickets is what I got
@@ram40andy Good to know, Thank you
Seems like a weird fix. Im surprised that the pedal wiring is large enough to carry a ton of current for all those lights. Its just a relay, seems like they'd just upgrade the relay, you know, instead of creating a potential fire hazard. ;-)
Engineer's .......probably only cost 1/2 a penny more to make a better quality relay.
Shorter Adapter Hose would make a difference probably
Hi, really appreciate your honest words. I think it’s very important to be selfcritical in Diagnostic jobs. Is there a reason you use Picoscope over the eScope? And do you use 4 or 8 Channel?
I bought my picoscope over 10 yrs ago, I had not heard of the e scope then. I use a 4 channel its an older model 4423 it still performs great. I do like some of the e scope features
Its innovation however without a dealer level scan tool or subscription based scan tool (autel and alike) you wont bebable to do a relearn. Just did a timing chain on 2017 pathfinder, it can be done manually but its a pain as likenmost nissans they are finicky with the seconds. Have only relearned 1 bank.
Excellent Video!
Thank you very much!
Another great instructional video and case study. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
💯👍
2018 with the same system. Crank no start. If I unplug the crankshaft position sensor it will start and run. I thought that was interesting that it will only run when unplugged. If you have any ideas i would appreciate it. I will also note with it running and plug back in the crank sensor the bank 2 intake is stick at 42 degrees advanced
Lots of chain issues on that engine. Front bank runs the high pressure pump. Is the motor sludged or noisey?
@@CartersDiagnostics it does make a slight knocking/rattle noise when snap the throttle but nothing else. Can rev it up and no knocking or anything. Pulled the camshaft sensors and they do have sludge film on them
Do you have a pressure transducer? A running idle pressure wave should show an outa time bank. Or a cam crank correlation test? The car in the video is know good.
8 channel rocks Mr Carter.lol. These intermittent brake switch diagnostic can be a pain in the butt because it's hard to take a look at everything at one time
One day hopefully I will have the power of 8..
Good video, I 100% agree with your statement about being able to monitor multiple circuits at once, and not just for high speed readings, I was wondering what laptop you are using in the video? I am thinking of getting another one.
Its an ACER nitro 5 . Kind of an older laptop.
Please make one video for k 110 currant clamp how to custom probe in pico and wr we found this clamp
Good Demonstration on the versatility of the scope, keep making videos
Thanks. I'm gonna try and keep vids coming.
Excellent! I’ve lost count of the number of eye rolls I got from my former employer when I pulled out my scope for a problem like this. Some people are funny. Thanks for sharing this one.😎
Maybe a good thing its a "former" employer. Scope use is a reality the more its embraced more success will be had.
Welcome to my part of the world.😢 People are just stuck to their old familiar ways. Sometimes they mock even though they witness and acknowledge the power of scope use in solving defiant problems.
@@abdul-kabiralegbe5660 people don't like what they don't understand
I have worked for several of those eye rollers in the past. The parts canon business model is more profitable than paying a diag. tech. Those type of eye roller imbeciles consider us a necessary evil for when they miss every shot with the parts canon and resent us for it.
excellent find keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
I take issue with the tsb! You've now changed the way the car is wired, and any future techs looking up a brake wiring diagram will be misled. Why not just make a more reliable relay? Seems nuts to me. Relays are used for starter enable, they seem reliable enough that you don't see starters being stuck engaged. Also... where'd the power loss come from? Does the ecm reduce power when it sees the brakes are applied in an effort to prevent the brakes from overheating? Maybe it's used to stop the vehicle from being powerbraked? my questions and issues here are regarding Nissan. As for the video and using the scope for it's multi-channel abilities, good job!!
Thanks for the comment. Not sure on why they don't make a better relay. The power loss is from the brake switch input. It limits throttle response when the switch is on.
The Pico software can run up to 50 000 seconds = >14h in a single screen, and can be set to save basically an unlimited number of screens until the hard drive is full, so it's absolutely useful for logging slow signals too. And the ability to set it and forget it, just checking what it caught later can be worth its weight in gold for symptoms you only see once in a blue moon.
Absolutely 💯, Thanks for commenting 🙏
It’s nice to know your background and how you’re able to take the time to properly spend the time on the cars. I work in a different field and it’s always felt like flat rate is a conflict of interest to me. Lots of opinions vary there so I won’t beat a dead horse or anything. Nice work on this diag and video! One thing I used a scope for recently was to find a short to ground. I put a long time base on the screen and shook a bunch of wires until I saw the amperage spike on screen. Turned out to be a bad trailer harness.
Great strategy with the scope 👏. The flat rate is good and bad. The conversation is worth having per individual IMO. If I was still a flat rate rate, no way would I make videos or spend the hours on some of the cars that I record.
@@CartersDiagnostics Agreed Mr. Carter. Flat Rate is a necessary evil in the industry for the most part BUT, after a few years when someone starts as a Tech, if you're a conscious individual you must ask yourself; do I want to become a diagnostician and really know what I'm doing, or just a good/average flat rate Technician (efficient parts changer) focused 99% on the money. I think both are necessary for the industry as a whole. IMO, a few individuals should be dedicated diagnosticians in a shop. I work in a 30 bay dealer/shop where 100% of the Techs are Flat Rate, even the 2 "Shop Foremans", and you can probably guess how good that works :(
Excited to more videos🎥 very good information
Thanks
Hope you make it YT big for your 8 channel pico.. Keep it up like this and wont be too much longer! ❤

No
Another great video. Great lesson.

Great Video Carter, i've been on the fence about getting a NVH kit for my pico, i haven't seen a lot of usage in the community, i know i get a ton of noise concerns from my customers & as you know sometimes it's hard to pin the exact issue, Do you believe this tool would be effective on suspension noises ? looking forward to more NVH videos, thanks buddy
I think it would be good for noises, I believe you need more than 1 probe so you can trianglelate the noise easier. I use the microphone alot for wind noise complaints, my hearing isn't as sharp as it was, so that helps me
Excellent diagnostic Mike! I've seen engine vibration in those 3 cylinders caused by different components. Mostly transmission mount leaking! Thank you for sharing, Mike. Good tool the Pico NVH.
The 3 cylinder has been very problematic. I've used the NVH more on those than anything at the moment. Thanks for watching
Hello Mr. Carter. I'm so glad you're back! Love your videos, just packed full of great info! Just a friendly recommendation; if you could talk your friends at Autonerds to include the Pico NVH essentials kit (PQ266) as a qualifying Kit to obtain Autonerdz subscription AND to also offer the kit at the same price as AES Wave of $2173. Autonerdz on the other hand, offers this kit for $2458 and is NOT a qualifying kit for Autonerds subscription. Thanks!
I have forwarded your comment to the Autonerdz team. Any info I get ,I will certainly post it. Or they may answer themselves. Thank you for the suggestion and your support 🙏
@startec1172 Just a tag to let you know of the Autonerdz response
Sick video. Thanks so much. I do mobile diag and programming. The amount of new bad parts even from the dealer is crazy lol.

Thanks again!
Ive used NVH and that is so powerfoul tool in goed hands. But bad thing is that you need to figure it out and do a lot of testing and comparing and...but its difficult to use tool that much in reality. I think that should be a lot more case studies with NVH so we all can learn.I found some converter shutter, diff noises with it.Engine vibrations are quite heavy to diagnose it with all that pulley diametars and crank rotations and calculations...etc...I like tool but i lack knowlege...Hope my English is ok. Goed video!!!
Should try using the ignition paddle wand from the pico kits. it will pick up keyless signals too, just like your tire sensor.
Nice , I will give it try. Thanks
Excellent video, as always! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
@@CartersDiagnostics It is nice to have measurable vibration data. I own the advanced Pico NVH, which allows me to place four accelerometers or four microphones at different locations.
@steveanderson4553 That's cool. I just have 1. The shop has an unlocked picoscope so I can use my nvh and theirs so actually I can use 2 at a time.
@@CartersDiagnostics I was tired of the butt-wars with the customers here at the dealership. It makes it so much easier, in my opinion, to prove out normal vibrations and abnormal vibrations.
Hi Mike, good to see you back. Sorry if I missed it in the video but I know you said you checked the runout of the crank with flexplate off and it was ok but did you mention if the engine was still stiff about 180 from top dead while turning engine all by itself? Thanks.
Yes ,after separating the engine and transmission it was still a weird stiff spot while rotating the engine even with plugs out.
