My Photography Plans for 2025
Join me as I embark on my final photography trip of 2024! While I originally planned to revisit the same spot where I filmed last year’s resolution video, the foggy weather had other ideas. Instead, I had to pivot and explore a new location-proving once again that adaptability is a key skill for any photographer.
In this video, I reflect on the highs and challenges of 2024 as a photographer and share my photography resolutions and goals for 2025. From embracing new techniques to pushing creative boundaries, I’m looking ahead to another exciting year behind the camera.

    Hey Neil, why not try a bit of film photography? As you shoot Canon, find yourself a cheap old EOS film camera on eBay with an EF lens as this will seem familiar to you in some way? I shoot a mixture of digital and film on Canon EOS cameras. I do though shoot mostly digital as of course, it's kind of easier 😃. I do however, love to shoot film as I feel it keeps my skills sharp as I cannot see how the shot has come out until I get the scans back. I do edit them a bit just like my digital images though, but you do need to be a bit more mindful of what you are doing when out and about.

      @@sarahneedham I keep meaning to try Film Photography, as a way to improve my skills, so thats not too bad of an idea actually - I actually have an old FD Mount that I intend to do a video about at some stage, so really just need the old film camera to go with it 👍👍

      @@neilstevensphotography Sounds like a plan 🙂. A long time ago, I used a more manual camera like you'd have to get to go with an FD lens, but then in 2000 I switched to the EOS system and thought it was amazing. Then I moved to digital a decade later but could of course, use my EF lenses. I have yet to move to the R mount as I still use DLSRs. This is handy mind you, as my full frame lenses can be used on the 2 EOS film bodies as well.

    One of the most frustrating trips I've ever had out with the Camera / recording for a UA-cam video. Only put this one together (from scratch) yesterday morning, and was expecting the final stages of Storm Darragh, so rather a lot of wind and rain - As it is I barely got any of the latter apart from a few sporadic occasions - Meant that I'd have been nothing short of furious with myself had I not gone out at all, this was a proper example where I'll be too fearful of the forecast, and will remain a Fair Weather Photographer by sticking in the warm instead... Need to get out of that habbit. Hope its not just me with this irritating mentality!! Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed this video... Hope to see you on the next one!! 👍👍

    For god's sake man, you have chosen a heavily overcast day to discuss the necessaity of using a lenshood? Joking aside, at the worst case, they don't add nor take anything away from the photograph, in other cases they are essential to maximie the contrast and to protect the lens from the elements to some extent. If you are going anywhere near the seaside not only you need a lens hood but also a UV or Skylight filter to protect the front element from the salt that is in the air. The most useless lenshoods are these petal shaped ones that are designed for zoom lenses that do not extend or retract, simply because they are only useful at the widest end, and have absolutely no effect on the longer end of the range. There was one exception and that was the one that I used to have on my old Nikon 17~55 F2.8 lens. The zoom extended and retracted within the hood in a way that the lenshood always provided maximum protection from stray light and flare.

  • @dangilmore9724
    @dangilmore9724 26 днів тому

    I rarely use lens hoods except in rain/snow. A lens hood, however, on long lenses (200mm or longer) are a must to improve contrast in the final image. I use a high end UV or lens protector filter most of the time (you have to be sure the protective filter is really high quality so you don't get ghosting, autifocus issues and strange defraction)

    I have too many lens hoods. First party, third party, they all just sit on the shelf and collect dust. I use a single filter diameter and step-up rings to attach one CPL/ND filter to all my lenses. A step-up ring prevents the use of a hood. I can shield the lens from the sun with my hand. I can't polarise light with my hand. The choice is simple. Plus, hoods take up too much space in my waist bag. My bag's content is always minimalistic: 1-3 lenses (depending on their size and my needs), 3 filters, step-up rings, spare LR44 batteries and a key to tighten my ballhead's quick release plate should it come loose.

  • @nickbianchi
    @nickbianchi 27 днів тому

    Using or not a lens hood is always a gamble. In your part of the world, are you often exposed to strong sunlight flare? Maybe less than me (in Summer in Switzerland). Therefore you could say that it’s not needed. But you have the drizzle or rain: therefore you should have it. I generally use it. I would be unhappy if shots got spoiled by the rain or the flare. BUT: what should we do with filters? Quite often, once you have a filter on, you can’t use the hood anymore. Waterfalls with ND-filter and no droplets protection can therefore become a big issue. Or night shots with night light and star cross filters, when it’s raining… Very hard!

      That's the reason I use a prospective filter. I calibrated my lenses with filters for normal shooting, and then calibrated them with a protective filter in a custom function so I can simply shift between calibration sets. Oddly enough, only my lenses 400mm or longer showed any calibration difference between filter and no filter.

      @nevvanclarke9225 That is true. And the better resolution you camera has, the more it reduces image quality. Anything you put in front of a lens will filter out "information" and cause distortion of some kind beyond what is inherent to a given lens. It's like editing an image. The more you edit, the more you affect image quality and lose information.

    I always use a lens hood out of practice, having learned the value of doing so when taking a recent trip to Iceland at the end of November and having the travel tripod + camera deciding to take a journey by themselves on-to solid rocks from waist height. The Camera is completely fine and aside from a few nicks on the filter thread it was the lens hood that cushioned the £1000 Z 24-120 from the worst of the fall. A £140 bill to have the lens checked over but it could have been a different story without the hood being on.

      @@greycrag Yeah sounds like what happened a few years ago with my old Camera and Lens when it went down, thankfully had a lens hood that day - Definitely feel like Im tempting fate on the occasions I don't use one!!

      @@neilstevensphotography There was definitely a few choice words shouted out loud as it happened just out of reach lol, the worst sound was the plastic breaking as I thought for a second the glass-front had shattered 😬 it wouldn't have been ideal taking a broken lens with shards of glass back through security as hand-luggage, but fortunately £35 of plastic saved the day.

    I do always use lens hoods for both drizzle and sun. I even use mine in cloudy dry conditions as it's just second nature for me 😊

      @neilstevensphotography haha, I'm sure that's not the reason 😜. Like you say though, if you use filters then hoods aren't so useful. I don't often use filters though as I mainly take my camera out when I take the dog out. Oh and the hood sort of guards against a smudgy doggie nose haha

    So then.. Lens Hood are they something that you use too often, or are they just too much hassle? Hope that you've enjoyed this particular video... Hope to see you on the next one 👍👍

    Woodland Photography is something I tend to avoid, but quite enjoyed this trip out... It actually began as just a trip out with the Camera, there was no plan to film a video here - Something I'll elude to further in next weeks video - Until then though... 👍👍

    Some interesting points. With regard to people walking through the shot, I sometimes have the opposite problem. I might set up a street shot and just wait for the right person to walk through the shot. Often they'll see the camera, apologize and wait!😀 In terms of saturated locations, I guess it depends on the type of photography you're doing. If you're on assignment as a travel photographer and have to go to a specific location, fair enough. But as a landscape photographer, I do feel that one of the best skills we can hone is to work with the elements of a landscape; shapes, layers, light, etc, and build a compelling composition that creates a response from the viewer, wherever we may be. It doesn't have to be an "iconic" location, as you have ably demonstrated with your Kent shots. I recently photographed Buachaille Etive Mor on Rannoch Moor from a variety of what you might call "non-standard" locations, and was happy with the results. Just out of interest, and as I was nearby, I went along to "the spot" where you get the waterfall in the foreground. (It's even marked on Google maps). I was frankly appalled by the environmental damage and erosion caused by thousands of human and tripod legs all concentrated into one spot.

    So my One Image; Four Season Project has come to a close here in 2024... Its been fun doing something different, but its been challenging re-visiting the same location on four occasions, trying to put together four different videos - Its meant that I've been able to explore other parts of the River over the course of the year, and see some new sights. Not sure what Project I'll do in 2025, not even sure what I've got planned for the next year... Best get thinking quickly though. In the meantime, let me know what your favourite season was from this location - Thank you for watching!! 👍👍

    Last month my family spent a couple days in Las Vegas. One of the casinos there has a garden display that they change out regularly, so we went to take a look. It was very, very busy, but I did my best to get some photos. Most people would automatically stop and wait for me, and I would most often tell them to go ahead as I wasn't worried about. In one occasion, I was taking a photo of my daughter and many people were pausing to avoid getting in the shot. There was one lady that I heard make a comment like, "It's a walkway, I'm not stopping." Nobody had asked her to, but it was sure a contrast to everyone else on that day. Courtesy is definitely a two way street.

      Yeah it only takes two seconds to take a picture.. Remember going to Vegas about a decade ago myself, and yeaaa... It gets very busy there so not surprised that you had those struggles - Good to know that the majority of people showed the simple bit of courtesy towards you though.
