I just ordered the 1662 Book of Common Prayer today. Yesterday, I attended my first Anglican Church service. I grew up Baptist (parents) and Methodist (grandparents) and, as an adult, mostly attended non-denominational. I married a non-practicing Roman Catholic. I wanted to get back into church on Sundays and wanted my husband to attend with me. I can't participate in a Roman Catholic church, but I was also disillusioned with modern Christian churches for various reasons. I researched, and Anglican seemed to be a good fit for both of us since Anglicans are both Catholic and Protestant. We are both looking forward to going back next Sunday. For anyone who is in the situation we are in our marriage, where you come from different backgrounds, or if you are disillusioned with the modern Christian church, I would tell you to try Anglican. But just as there are in many churches today, you still need to research because there is division even within the Anglican Church.

@@MegUSN52 I hope the Book of Common Prayer is a blessing to you! And Anglicanism is definitely both Protestant and catholic! It holds firm Protestant convictions like justification by grace through faith and sola scriptura. It also retains a very high view of Holy Tradition, an episcopal structure (Governed by Bishops), a high liturgical structure, and a high view of the sacraments. If you’d like to learn about this further, I recommend you read “An Apology of the Church of England” by Bishop John Jewel. I noticed you used terms like 'inerrant' and 'infallible' when refferring to scripture. From my understanding these are fairly new terms applied to scripture that seem to end up in a very literalist reading. From your view, is holding scripture as sacred, inspired, authoritative but not inerrant a viable position for a Christian?

There is a huge difference between an icon and an idol. In bowing to the cross, it is a sign of respect for the suffering of Jesus Christ on our behalf. Do you deny the cross? An icon ultimately points to Jesus; an idol is said to be inhabited, or possessed by the false god. The distinction may be difficult for people who were raised in a non-liturgical church. As much as I respect my less liturgical brothers and sisters, to decry a practice as "Catholic" is just silly. It is also Lutheran, Episcopalian, and in also Orthodox, although the differences in Orthodox practice of liturgy is fascinating to someone raised in the Western tradition. We should not be so quick to judge our brothers and sisters. Jesus is our judge.

Lutherans, the first Calvinist, and the radical reformers all made mistakes. We are not perfect people, but it’s the gospel that perfects us. One thing we know about Anglicans is that they are Catholics(not Roman) just like every other Protestant denominations is catholic for we all believe in one catholic(universal) church regardless of our denominations. I like many things about Anglicanism. Unfortunately I left one I attended as they held the Book of Common Prayer over the Bible..Priest had a female Deacon do the preaching. He trained at a woke college. May be different in other states. No outreach. Evangelism not happening. In Timothy's time the leaders called missionary Bishops went from church to church strengthening each like Paul the Apostle did! Pentecostalism has always been in the Church. Anglican mission I attended had no sense of community. People were nice but as a single older man and a veteran I never felt close to any..

My jaw dropped, didn't know if or when you'd ever upload again 😅 very cool! 😎 Very relatable stuff at the beginning. I find it difficult to communicate to others how and why I went from non-denom to Anglican. Nobody really gets it unless they also went from "low church" to "high church" in some way. Everyone else is either suspicious, or thinks I made the move purely because of style preferences or other very superficial reasons. At the end of the day I think the biggest reason is need. I'm not Anglican now because I'm a super-Christian who reached enlightenment and is now smarter than all the low-church dum-dums. No, I came here because I needed more. I wasn't finding it where I came from. I had to go "further up and further in." I can't do this on my own, or even just in my somewhat insular local church. We need the whole body, we need the roots, we need the fullness of the faith.

Evan, thanks for the great video. I am from a Charismatic Catholic background, also practicing Anglican Daily Office. It's true that the Daily Office is extraordinary. In fact, God himself directed me to use the Daily Office. As a fellow Pentecostal, you would understand when I say "God directs" me. I learned to pray intercession and read the Bible regularly from the Daily Office, two things I really long to be able to do in my Christian life. What's extraordinary is that when I worship in a prayer meeting once a week, I really feel that the Daily Office has somehow made me very close with the Holy Spirit, perhaps through the psalms and intercessory prayers. As a Catholic Charismatic, doing this Daily Office really blesses me. Because my native language is Indonesian, while the Anglican church in Indonesia has very few congregations, I compiled my own daily office from English BCP sources on the internet. I translated it with the help of an Indonesian Bible, because as you said, 80-85 percent of the Daily Office are Bible quotations, so most of the materials in the Daily Office can be recomposed using Indonesian Bible quotations. I base my Daily Office prayers from BCP 1979, but for the lectionary I use BCP from ACNA 2019. For some basic prayers and confessions of faith I use the versions of what are already used by Indonesian Roman Catholics. Even in compiling this, my own personal Indonesian Daily Office, I felt God's extraordinary guidance. He really wants me to practice this Daily Office, to worship dan praise Him.

Just stumbled onto this video and really appreciated it! I come from an evangelical background and ended up leaving my church years ago for many reasons, mainly because it felt so over simplified, ultra individualistic, and suspicious of anything "rote"/non-spontaneous. I don't remember being overtly taught that other denominations were "questionable" (at best), but when I left, it was my denomination or nothing at all. I had no concept of any other way of being a true Christian. Not long afterwards, I read "Evangelical Is Not Enough," which blew holes through my inherited suspicion of liturgical prayer and worship. I probably would have refused to even *read* a Book of Common Prayer, much less use it, back in the churches of my youth. After closing the door on Christianity (as I knew it), I never imagined going to church again - beyond weddings, funerals, or visiting beautiful or historical churches just for the aesthetic. Fast forward 20+ years. I really wanted to get back to God, but couldn't stomach the denominations of my youth. In fact, I wasn't sure I could stand *any* church that claimed to be part of a denomination. Then I found an Anglican (ACNA) church, and I have never looked back. Our church uses the 2019 Book of Common Prayer. There are copies in the back of every pew, and I bought a nice leather bound copy for myself, but I am still getting used to it. (I suspect that's true for a lot of other former Evangelicals in my church!) Your video really hit the nail on the head of why having a collected book of prayers (among other things) is so beautiful.

This is similar to my story. I walked away from evangelical churches because the theology was watered down. Sermons were more of the preachers opinion than what the scripture says. Needless to say I've started going to an Anglican church ( ACNA not C of E). The daily office has helped me to instill quiet times with myself and the Lord. I am praying more, reading and meditating on more scripture than ever before. The Book of Common Prayer is awesome!

Does scripture confirm the concept of Jesus having two nature? I don't think so. Jesus said his miracles were from the Father in him doing the work. So there was a Kenosis, a losing of his own miraculous attributes. But Jesus always maintained his identity of the Logos. That never changed, but his Logos spirit was transformed into that of a man. This idea of two natures is really Nestorian and doesn't work. Partial human knowledge would be obliterated by omniscience.

Very good. I would also add I use my body to make the sign of the cross at certain times to show the importance of the cross in my life and show respect to the Holy Trinity. Likewise, I bow when the name of Jesus Christ is mentioned in the liturgy, I cross my head, my lips, and my heart when the Holy Gospel is read in the church, and I profoundly bow during the Nicene Creed when the incarnation and death are mentioned - rising from that at the mention of the Resurrection! YES! We worship with our bodies ( like clapping, raising hands, shouting, moving- things we did (do) in our background) :) It's all good.

The liturgy to me... the words are rich, and deep, and time-tested, and cross-cultural. They are powerful. Also- if I am beat up by the world, exhausted from life - I can enter into liturgical worship and not have to construct my own worship... and the Spirit will rejuvenate me. I can relax and let the worship of God minister to me. It is solid. It is based. It is grounding.
