康定 Kāngdìng: A Small Day Hike With Our Dogs in Tibetan Kham to Acclimatise to the Altitude
康定 Kāngdìng - or དར་རྩེ་མདོ། Dartsedo as it’s known to Tibetans - is the first town across the border from Sìchuān in what was once the Tibetan kingdom of ཁམས Kham. For centuries it was a trading outpost, where Tibetans exchanged wool, pelts and warhorses for Chinese tea, silk and porcelain. ཁམས་པ Khampa people were the most feared warriors of the ethnic groups now referred to collectively as ‘Tibetans.’ While it lies outside of what the Chinese call 西藏自治区 ‘Tibet Autonomous Region,’ Kham is essential for understanding Tibetan history.
We first visited Kāngdìng, the gateway to Kham, as fresh-faced twenty-somethings back in 2013. Back then the bus ride from Chéngdū took ten hours. We've wanted to return ever since, but Covid restrictions and our dogs being scared of cars made the trip impossible. Now both those obstacles have been lifted, we were so excited to return! We hope you enjoy revisiting the area with us.

Hiking China: Exploring a Hidden Gem Close to Chengdu, 龙窝子

National holidays are always a chaotic time of year to travel in China. Hundreds of millions of the working public get released for a fleeting, simultaneous moment. The Chinese idiom 人山人海 renshan renhai, ‘people-mountain, people-sea’ becomes the go-to term for describing train stations, parks, nature reserves and historical sites. Not only did we visit 龙窝子Longwozi, ‘Dragon’s Lair’ during the Ma...
Daoism and the Climate Crisis: Exploring QingCheng Mountain and QingYang Palace in Chengdu, China
Переглядів 366Рік тому
Since the mid-1990’s, Daoism has been increasingly prominent in Chinese environmental policy. The government has created nature reserves according to Daoist ‘sacred geography’, and senior Daoist figures have attended climate summits and meetings with government officials. While it is well-known that the CCP maintains a tight grip over organized religion in China, we nevertheless decided it was ...
The New Face of Urban China? : Exploring the World’s Longest Cycle Path

While living in Chengdu, China’s ‘Western Capital’ with a population over 16million, the 天府绿道 Tiānfǔ lǜdào, the ‘Tianfu Greenway,’ is impossible to ignore. The 100km orbital cycle path encircles the city, connecting 121 urban parks and giving residents easy access to green space. But that’s not all: this green ring road is just one part of a much larger system of pedestrianised cycle routes and...
Solo Female Travel: Hiking and Biking in China’s Four Sisters Mountains

This summer I ventured off solo and explored Xiao Jin County in Western Sichuan by bike. I spent a few days in the small, developing town of SiGuNiang Shan and hiked 26km along Hai Zi valley, where I saw stunning views of the Four Sisters peaks. The Four Sisters are the biggest mountains in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. At 200km from Chengdu with peaks over 6000m, they are the cl...
Cycling China: Riding in Search of Glaciers in Luding Country, Ganzi, Sichuan

I rode my bamboo bike from the city of Kangding, through the Daxue (big snowy) mountain range to Hailuogou, ‘Sea Conch Valley,’ in search of an amazing low-altitude glacier. I was interested in this glacier because it is rapidly destabilising due to climate change. It has retreated 2km since the 1930s, and is becoming increasingly volatile for people living downhill. This video was created just...
Chengdu’s Amazing Teahouses (Renmin GongYuan, HeMing Teahouse, Pengzhen Guanyin Pavilion + more)

We set out on our bamboo bikes in the city of Chengdu to explore the amazing world of tea. Here are some facts we found out along the way: - Southwest China is the birthplace of tea - Sichuan is the first place tea was cultivated - Chengdu has more teahouses than any other city in China (or the world) - The ‘Three Religions,’ Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism all encouraged tea ceremonies since...

Chinese chefs have the unique ability to make any vegetable taste aggressively delicious. We’ve never heard a Chinese person say they don’t like vegetables, and we see this as one thing China has going for it when thinking about a plant-based revolution! Since the start of spring, our kind neighbour Mr Zhou began bringing us bai cai, napa cabbages, from his urban farm. This gave us plenty of ti...

Building bamboo touring bikes from scratch in Chengdu, China
A lot of people say there's no vegan food in China and it would be a challenge to go there if you're vegan. But that's just their uninformed perception. There are plenty of vegetarian food in China and it's not just circled on the monks, it's everywhere if you just bother to look and ask. But then again those who say there's no vegan food never set foot in China before.
@@davepsk7334 Indeed, it’s a common misconception that only holds true for one side of China. Thanks for watching
Great video!
@@ishtarishaya Thank you my friend
@@dogmatictales well, you have a new subscriber here.
Beautiful I often ate Buddhist and Confucius temples when I was in china. Was so difficult to find food as a tourist in 2011
@@NiaEsto thanks so much. Yeah things were a bit different back then haha
Thank you for sharing this experience! I actually plan to solo hike the valleys in Siguaniang next month. I wonder if it is possible without knowledge of Chinese?
Any tips on how to relax and encourage your dogs in the trailer . Something I want to try .
@@hoboesque_ There are many ways and I’m not a dog behaviouralist, but some things that worked for us are starting in a very non-stimulating environment (such as inside) and getting the dog comfortable lying in the trailer while it’s on the ground, without the wheels on. You can hide treats inside and allow the dog to hunt for them with its nose. You can then put the wheels on (but make sure it wont fall over!) and ask the dog to get in the trailer and lie down for a reward. Very slowly, start moving the trailer for short distances and reward it. If it helps, black out the windows by sticking some fabric or plastic over it, as for some dogs the scenery moving past can make them excited/nervous. When the dog’s comfortable being wheeled around in your apartment and being attached to the bicycle, graduate to a very quiet place outside, where they won’t get excited by cats or squirrels or whatever. Repeat the process, be patient and if they get nervous, move back to an easier level like trying again inside the house. Good luck!
@@dogmatictales thank you , this is sound advice . Going to give my 2 patterdale terrier crosses a try

What I love about China is that their Chinese Tea Houses in many cases are the social hub of society. Exactly the same as the local pub or Tavern in Western Society! The only difference is one provides a wonderful healthy Beverage whilst the pubs and Taverns of the West provide our beverages of destruction.
Awesome! I've been wanting to find some Chinese vegan content for a while. Really glad to find your channel! :)
Thank you!🙏
Huh, that's weird. You're pro-environmentalist and anti-police... so you went to China, a communist police state that produces the bulk of Asia's pollution. Oh, and then you had the police right there wasting your time and every chance to tell them off like you'd do in UA-cam comments, but instead you laughed and buddied around with them like a coward. Very rebel. Such wow.
Hey! Thanks so much for this video, its really useful! Can I ask you, ehich Buddhists buffet was thay!? I wanna go but dont know where that is!
Very nice video 🐜
Hypocritical fuds. You flew by plane to China, thus increasing the worlds carbon footprint Or are ye gnna say you got there by horse and carriage?
China has myriads of vegan food but somehow one sect of so-called vegetarians are constantly complaining about lack of vegetarian/vegan food in China.
I like Asian Vegetarian foods
so yummy! Can you leave the name and addresses of those places please????

Hey Andy, thanks so much! Really appreciate you watching and the kind words ❤️
It is nice to see a remote beauty spot that is not rammed full of tourists and hawkers, especially during public holiday.
Thanks for watching! Yes, it is truly a hidden gem. Some crowds did start to turn up towards the end of our stay here, but thankfully we were on the way out by then.
Thank you for the video.I didn't know of such a place before, even though I have lived in a town about ten kilometers away for ten years. I am planning to hike here in the next few days.
That’s so great to hear! Hope you enjoy it, it should be quieter out of the national holiday…. But quite hot now!
Thanl you for this fantastic Video. It's so beautiful. I used to live in Chengdu for a year but had never heard about this place. One more reason to hopefully going back there some time. Stay safe and keep doing what you enjoy

My favorite city is Dujiangyan. Although it is a tourist city, it is very quiet and comfortable in the off-season. It is a livable city surrounded by green plants all the year round. What's more, Thanks to its excellent geographical location, it is the starting city for all kind of tourism routes in western Sichuan.
Yeah, Dujiangyan is a good base for travel in 川西
These signs are a joke, and their effect is equivalent to a sign with surveillance or a vicious dog inside. Most of them come from some paranoid elderly people🤣
From the southwest of Chengdu to Ya'an, the towns along the way are the most traditional agricultural areas near Chengdu. That's a mature short distance cycling route. I really enjoyed watching your video, thanks for sharing.
I recommend you to go cycling to Lugu Lake if you have the opportunity. It's very beautiful and the scenery along the way is also very beautiful. You can choose to take a car or high-speed rail to Xichang, and the rest of the journey is by bike. Really like your video and hope you can continue making it.
Watching your video feels very relaxed, it perfectly reflects the leisure of Sichuan.Thank you for sharing

I'm also planning to go to Siguniang recently. I was told that every traveler must hire a guide to ensure safety when going to ChangPingGou. Is this true?
Hi! No, you don't require a guide to visit the valleys. It is very easy to follow the trail. However, if you want to camp in the national park you have to have a guide and you need to pay a camping fee. Hope you have fun there!
Wonderful. thank you.
Thank YOU for watching! 🌿
Hi, I‘m planning to go to Sichuan in a few months to cycle for a month. Do you know how strikt the police is with tourists wild camping, as you can‘t really report your tent as a location to them?
Hi, that’s great to hear! I would say that wild camping is probably technically illegal here like the rest of china, however Sichuan is very relaxed about this. We’ve wild camped all over the place and the locals always just find it funny lol. If it’s someone’s land we try to ask permission, and of course some restricted national parks or ‘scenic spots’ are off limits. Where are you thinking of going?
Very interesting Daoist philosophy, being vegan is it hard to find places to eat especially when travelling scenic places?
Hi Dinal, thanks for subscribing! 🤩 to tell you the truth it can be hard to get vegan food while travelling in China. In Sichuan though, there are a few vegan classics like mapo tofu and ‘fish fragrance’ eggplant. But we usually bring food with us just to be sure
so glad you are looking after the mental health of those poor creatures
