Climbing Denali
For me, this all started two years ago in Wyoming. Along with my dad and a good friend, I signed up for a climb of the Grand Teton, which felt like another type of tourism while we passed through Jackson Hole. I didn’t intend for this side quest to go any further than that, but the mountains have a way of pulling you in.
This video documents the May 5, 2024, West Buttress Denali expedition through RMI.

I'm in my last 2 weeks of my Docents course. I love the guest interaction I get when I'm on board. The Veteran Docents are a wealth of historical information. If anyone gets the chance to visit, please take time to talk to these heroes.
Excellent videography and narration! I too stayed at the Swiss Alaska Inn and flew with K2 Aviation (with Jim Okonek, the founder) in 1986 on my first Denali expedition. You were wise in choosing a guided approach, not just for improved summit odds, but because you get to learn about how to approach the mountain, when to be patient and when to move out. Blessings, Steve
Whoah what a great video!
Awesome work Nick!
Stationed there
Very nice, especially the drone footage. I climbed this 30+ years ago and get sentimental looking at it. For me it was always the big dramatic formations like this, Moses, Devils Tower, the Diamond, Yosemite etc that made the deepest impressions on me. If anyone posts a video about the Nose, that's enough for me, I'll watch it. My partner on Castleton was a woman I was dating who couldn't get up the 10a chimney on the Kor Engels route, so I had to haul her through it. That is the ultimate style, leading the crux and then hauling your girlfriend up.
Wow super cool video! Want to do the tour in some weeks. Is a 70m rope long enough to rapell?
Been waiting so long for this!
Commenting for the algorithm, amazing story!
great production, the commentary was so peaceful n calming and great captures. ty for the experience
Sensational Nick - was hooked from the 1st minute. Amazing production. So proud of what you’ve achieved mate.
Thanks for watching!!
incredible video! Thanks for the upload in amazing quality. Fellow climber from Alberta, Canada
I learned a couple days ago that Adm. Pettigrew has passed away. I am very grateful we shared this conversation and for all the others over beers in San Diego. He was a shining example of patriotism and honor. Rest in peace Viper.
I was his controller on May 6, 1972. At our first MIG Killers Debrief, He introduced me as "The Voice of GOD". ACE
RIP Viper - A true legend.
Reported there after A school in Memphis ,, Air launched weapons school for 6 weeks ,, did line handling party for the mighty O cv -34 coming back from there last west pac cruise late feb and march of 1976
Thx for posting these videos
Stumbled across your channel searching for vids on old bases. I use to live on base from 90-92. Typical Navy family station time. I've lived in many places but this was my favorite and most memorable as it was my dad's last duty station. I can remember the day the Gulf War began. George Bush Sr was in office. Alameda NAS was still the Carl Vinson's home port. I lived in Officer's housing just outside the East gate that I always thought was the main gate. The A-7 Corsair is on the stick at this gate. Not sure if its still there. Many good memories. Thanks for making this.
I recently acquired a flight helmet from the 90th that was named to a Mark Sheeter, Callsign "Skeeter", did your dad happen to know of Mr. Sheeter. Sheeter was with them around the 1991 time frame.
01:58 thats called a canopy dawg... and there aint no ejection seat on an E-2. Bailout parachute only option
Thank you for posting this beautifully edited video. It looks like my trip with RMI overlapped with yours. I summitted on June 2, and the group was led by Dave Hahn. I can't tell what date yours was, but my grey pack and white/red helmet are there in the video at 3:18.
Great video! You should do a video on your gear list, or do you have a list somewhere?
My dad served on the USS MIDWAY CVA-41 in Vietnam
Just did this route last week and it was mega
There was no ejection on the E-2. Hatch above each pilot. 1 hatch in back for the 3 crewmembers. CPO, USN, RET, 69-94
The F-14 with the wrong stick in it 😂
Did you encounter any aliens?
This is sick you gotta head to red rocks in nevada for some more awesome multipitch stuff
Awesome route. Herb seems like a really cool dude too.
Bro wtf is an 80 year old man doing up there? Got bored with bingo?
He’s done it 50 Times. Experienced climber
Awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Senza credermi quindi. In quei giorni ero in forma. Mi spettava ľHalf dome e il Capitan nelle settimane successive.
Hi Nick, welcome to the Castleton club!!! I could see your emotion at the top. I get it, I literally had tears at the same spot. My summit was at age 55, I am still climbing now at 60!! I watched every UA-cam video of Castleton, yours does the best job of showing the journey.
Well done Ed! Tell me more. I'm do to give it a "crack" next year at 60. How long had you been climbing by the age of 55? Any particular advice. Definitely stiffer do to some arthritis at this point. THX
I used a Rainier beer can as a weed bong three years in a row🤷
Your guides were probably smoking dope and woke up when ever they wanted. I usually bumped up from from Muir to Ingram for summit push which was a 1000 feet higher. Also we stayed at Ingram another night which allowed us to actually enjoy the climb. RMI is a terrible boot camp experience
Did Ingram twice and disappointment once route 99-2001. Best advise is my good gear and take breaks but never ever quit.
10:25 "After another hearty freeze dried dinner". No such thing exists.
USS Midway i have friend name Steve Smiley.
Going for a summit attempt with Alpine Ascents starting late May. I hope weather can hold out for us for sure! Great video!
I was a member of the 90th when it was at Clark Air Base, Philippines.
I summited the Grand for the first time with a climber friend, 11 weeks after breaking my femur in a ski mountaineering accident. Definitely made for a memorable experience! The Tetons are amazing. 👍🏔️
I was stationed aboard the USS Samuel Gompers AD 37 from 91 to 94. There were some good times there. Of course back then I always said I couldn't wait to get out. Got out and realized it was a mistake. Took my family back to Alameda 5 years ago. It had changed but really not that much. Wanted to show my kids where Dad would hang out when not on board. We got on the base and it was disheartening because I remember how it was. We toured the Hornet and my kids got a taste of what life was like for Dad before they were born. But before we toured I had to stop because the memories were so real. I saw the base as it is now, but in my mind? Just like I had never left. All the sights and sounds and smells all came flooding back so much that it brought tears to my eyes. Now I do maintenance work for a coalition for the homeless and my property is strictly veterans.
Awesome work! Herb is, without a doubt, one of the best guides in the country, if not the world!
Deserthighlights is awesome!
Thank you for this, I have been on the Midway twice and I am planning a trip back with my father who served in the Navy. We are planning to visit the Midway and the USS Iowa BB 61 in LA since we are from Iowa. Going out to California to tour these ships with my dad is something I am looking forward to. I have visted the Midway a couple of times when I have been in California and I have been on the Iowa once while out there, going out there with my dad should be a good time. Glad you had the opportunity wih your father.
Nick thanks for making this video this base was my home from sept 85 to sept 89 what great memories thanks
