Kawasaki ZZR 1100, ZX14R and ZX12R Update

A few items needed for the 1100 and the 12R. Surprised by the Rev Counter failure on the 11. I am interested to see what the 1100 is like with the concentric adjusters in the normal position. I have not ridden the bike with them in that position for 10 years.

Rusty fuel tank, blocked carb jets, leaking fork seals and contaminated brake pads! Oh what fun I had. You will notice it is impossible for me to do any maintenance on the bike without getting oil on my face! :-)

Kawasaki ZX12R First run around the bends Part 1
Переглядів 326Місяць тому
So the mechanical issues have all been sorted and I took it around the bends for the first time to see how it compared to the ZX14R and the ZZR 1100. I am still limited to to 5000rpm until the run in period is completed but 5000rpm on a ZX12R is still pretty quick. It was a great day.

After months of work on the bike I went for the first ride. It has been a long journey but it now works as it should. A great deal of time effort and indeed money has gone into this but the stupid grin on my face when I rode it yesterday shows that it is all worth while. Now I will get down to the nitty gritty and start doing all the small detailing that needs to be done. ZX12R power!

Out for a ride on the ZZR. Just cruising along at 90-100mph. The ZZR just doing it effortlessly. Lots of power left if it is required.

A bit of fun on a road with bumps, mud, wet patches, leaves, adverse camber, double apex corners and....... A herd of Cows at 9 mins. Maximum concentration required because of little room for error. Love it!

Have managed to get hold of a 2005 ZX12R that was a none runner and had not been started for 2 1/2 years it is now ready to rock and roll. This video shows me talking about the bike and also a ride I had on it today. You will notice I cant keep smiling whilst talking about the bike. That tells you how I feel about it.

Well, the end is in sight. I have done a multitude of small jobs, from replacing damaged captive nuts on the fairing mounts (not the rubber encapsulated ones) which required heating the brackets and then mounting new nuts, to changing brake pads, removing stickers (takes so dam long) replacing bolts cleaning parts etc etc. It goes to have the FI issue fixed in a couple of days and the last part...

So, as always the list of things to do keeps getting bigger but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Wheels have been painted and decals added, lots of small but time consuming jobs completed. Parts arriving and other bits coming back from the painter and Hydro dipping shop.
Kawasaki ZX12R after first wash after getting it running.

After the first wash and good look I was able to see potential cosmetic issues. There were a few. As it turned out there was the usual wrong and seized fasteners, cracks in fairings, missing items and a particular Kawasaki favorite, corroded wheels and brake calipers. Oh well, I expected it.

She has had the starter motor rebuilt as it was dead, also the front forks rebuilt as they dropped all their oil. I suspect that having been stationary for years the seal hardened up and when we pushed it to the truck when I purchased it the seals let go. The injectors were all cleaned, old fuel removed and fuel system cleaned out, oil and coolant changed, filters cleaned. The most nervous mome...

After many years I have got a ZX12R. As there are only 3 or 4 in the whole country finding one has taken many years. It needs a little TLC which has started already. Thanks to Phillip for selling me his machine and all the extras he provided. These include a hardback service manual, a "Silver Book" and many spare parts.
Kawasaki ZXR 750 H1 First ride around the bends!

At last! I managed to get the ZXR on to the type of roads it was made for. It has been quite a long journey for this bike but it was worthwhile. It was a learning experience for me as the bike handles so very differently from my normal bikes. The trip was 260km and when I got off the bike I felt fine, which surprised me. What the videos do not show well was the steep gradients on the route. On ...

Hi mate, which did you have?
If the 11 is the Millennium Falcon, then this is the starship enterprise! The handling looks a bit sharper than the 11. How does it compare to the 12? And, how do they all compare for outright straight line performance? Great vid.
I think the 12 is a little more chuckable than the 14. Whilst the 11 is a fast machine the 12 and 14 are super quick and very similar in a straight line.
You should buy zzr 1200 in your collection. This is also awesome bike. I have all of them. And zzr 1200 is quite the same as zx12r. Greetings from Russia!
@@fg1981s Hi mate, there are no ZZR 1200's in this country. They did not sell well in the UK either. The USA seems to be the place they sold best. I suspect you are not riding much at the moment due to it being winter in Russia. Lots of cleaning and servicing though. :-)
@@MichaelZZRrider Oh, it's a pity. I bought zzr 1200 last summer. I have saveral Kawasaki in my collection. And my favorite one is zx12r. But zzr 1200 is very close to zx12r. Stunning models. Yes, there is winter now(( and I'm doing maintenance for the summer season.
@ Will not be long mate and then you can get back out on the road. 'Let The Good Times roll" 🙂
What size and brand of rear tire do you have on the zx12r?
Hi mate, i am running a 190 Continental Road Attack on the ZX12R. I run Conti's on all my bikes
recently bought a zzr, its in rough shape but im looking to restore it! your channel has a lot of info, nice to see how you care for your bikes and i love the tips you give
@@CatchingZzZzz Thanks mate. I hope the refurb goes ok. Plenty of new and used parts available.
Wow its in the new cave :)
@@du1uuu Yes mate.. The house is not finished but my garage is :-)
That’s a nice trio.. I have various 90s sport bikes, and one of them is a green (with the rip decals) A2 ZX12R with 4900 miles. I think it’s a great bike. I have bubble wrapped and stored the original exhaust system, and fitted a full Ti Akrapovic exhaust.. which sounds 😍🔥 The 12R is a sport bike compared to its competitors of the day, the Blackbird and Busa which were more sport tourer.. (imo) Safe rides mate.. You have a very nice selection of bikes there
@@woooster17 Thanks mate. The 3 bikes I have always wanted. Spend a great deal of time just looking at them. Only 3 ZX12R's in the Philippines, possibly only 5 of the ZZR and ZX14R so it has taken years to find them.
I have a all black zx11 with only 700 miles. It’s been garage kept. Anyone interested. It’s going to be for sale soon
Just passing by to see the Millennium Falcon doing the business ✌🏻
Ha! Ha!. She is taking a rest at the moment. The new rev counter arrives tomorrow so she will be back soon.
Not long replacing the the oil cooler/ pipes on my D1 Ebony Kawasaki only has the left pipe available £200 plus pounds. Now in the process of front fork replacement so would be interested how yours are doing.
There are 3 oil pipes mate. Kawasaki still do 2 of them. The L/H pipe will cost me 100 usd plus postage. What do you mean in regard to the front forks mate?
@MichaelZZRrider fork stanchions are pitted and rusted seals to change so thought of doing what you have done.
I could only purchase the left oil line from Kawasaki where did you get the other two?
@@richierich5445 The R/H Lower is available on MegaZip 51044-1152 TUBE-ASSY,LH

Great videos, great channel Here in France, I have exactly the same ZZR 1100 than you (93 grey and black) Awesome bike Carburetor 4 cylinder big Kawa are super bike Just to avoid a serious issue on your ZZR11, don’t Forget to change your alternator chain and his tensioner There ´s a lot of video on You tube DIY Believe me, i have broke my cluctch on a previous ZRX Eddie Lawson because of a broken tensioner
@@hubertlathelize-i4c Hi mate, agree with your comments regarding the tensioner. Mine has a new one fitted. Happy riding mate. :-)
You'll get it sorted mate 👍 Happy new year everyone. ❤
Hi mate, I missed your message somehow. The 11 is nearly sorted. The new rev counter arrives tomorrow .
Had nothing but trouble with mine so bought a honda
Thats a shame, there is always the odd machine that has issues. Normally due to poor maintenance when it was first purchased and after. Anyway, enjoy your Honda mate.
I cleaned my tank as will but used Evaporust to the top of the tank. My gas gauge wasn't working, so I replaced that as well and now all is good. Question for ya. After riding a a bit and the bike is warm, at a stop light with the clutch lever pull in, the bike will creep, it's like the clutch pressure bled down. Do you think it's the master or the slave that is the issue? Last Q. What did you do with the zx7? Cheers!😊
Hi mate, I sold the ZX7R to a collector, so I know it will be looked aftyer. He loves it. In regard to the bike creeping forward I woukld suggest changing the clutch friction plate and clutch plates.
I have the filter mate. The tank was pretty rusty and it only takes a a minute amount of rust to block a csrb needle. As I found out. :-)
Hi mate, Have you got an inline filter between the tank and the fuel pump? You can even chuck two in to be safe. She’s looking good.
No silly waves across to pond huh? Refreshing to see..
Not to sure what you are saying mate.
I have always owned big bikes also & the zx12r to zx14 etc it's not much fun around the city for sure.
Hi mate, they are not too bad but boy do you get warm when stuck in traffic.
Which is your favourite machine to ride now, the 12, the 14 or the falcon?
@@gdfggggg Honestly I cant answer that question. They are all big and heavy but that is where the similarities end. The ZZR is like a well fitting glove. Fast and comfortable and has the great induction sound that only a carb bike can have. The 14 is crazy fast, handles well, and is a jack of all trades. The 12R is also crazy fast, feels raw and less refined, is lighter, goes around bends with less effort and looka fantastic. These are the 3 bikes I have wanted for years and they all live up to my expectations. If I had the choice of any bike ever made it would be these 3.
@ that’s so awesome. I’m glad you’ve got your dream bikes. There’s something about the falcon that just about pips it for me. Gonna get a 14 when the funds allow, probably in the next year or so. My 11 is so fast at 6000 rpm that it rips the skin off your face. Pretty sure it’s been Dynojetted. It’s definitely not a corner queen, but it’s mind blowingly fast. Can’t imagine going much faster. It just blows away everything I’ve ever encountered. Literally, 130mph and it’s still pulling like it does at 70, pure brutish acceleration. I must control myself on these British roads 😂 I get home and I’m paranoid for a day or two that I’ve been snapped by a camera.
Crackin run that. I keep leaving my fuel cap spring cover up after fuelling the 14! Don't know why as I never do on the 11! Must be in such a hurry to get going when I'm burning daylight! 🙂
@@alcapone6946 Ha! Ha! In my case it is probably age! Ha! Ha!
How’s it ride compared to the 14?
And if you could only ride one, which one would you choose?
i really could not say mate. Not a decision I will have to ever make hopefully :-)
Yes mate also more nimble than the 14 as well.
Is it more nimble than the 11?
@@gdfggggg yes mate, less effort required for change of direction.
@MichaelZZRrider I could see that. You had her right over!
👍👍
Still bombing around on my D5, love it even more now it's tuned, dyna tek coils YSS remote rear shock, progressive fork springs and altered gearing, had over 190mph indicated on the clock, also fitted GSXR750 four pot calipers with HEL lines , black widow decat front pipework and twin. Scorpion race cans, love it 👌 wicked bike, also have a lightened and tuned GSX1400 and a '83 GPZ1100 unitrak which is heavily butchered, now wears a mv single seat unit and CB1300 tank running Thundercat front end in slab yokes with weight matched progressive springs, Thundercat rear wheel and brake but I designed my own deep braced steel swingarm 1.5" shorter than stock
@@scottmorris9271 Hi mate, i tend to make slight modifications that that dont change the outward appearance much. Front springs. Rear shock and brake calipers etc. Sounds like you have a real rocket. Ride Fast mate.
@MichaelZZRrider try 19 tooth front and a 41 rear, you won't be disappointed 👍🤪
Cracking update as usual. She is looking fantastic! Whilst you have been busy doing open heart surgery on the 12R, I have put 2.5k miles on my (new to me) ZZR1400! You said I'd love it and I do! What a machine! She's now sitting at just under 8K miles, is a 2013 model, having covered just over 5K when I bought it late August. Put brand new road 6 tyres on with silica technology and they are awesome in wet and dry conditions and wearing well too which is a novelty for me! Glad I did it this way round too (14 before 12R) because it makes me appreciate the 11 even more now but there is definitely space for a 12R in my heart and in he garage too! Beyond that it'll be a KR1S 250 2 stroke for me and not the ZXR route....but if the right one came up nearby who knows. It has been a while since you posted! Glad that all is well and you're enjoying the riding out there. Currently ranging from -5 to +5 degrees here beside The Macallan Distillery where I live in Bonny Scotland! Both the 11 and the 14 tucked up in hibernation now until next year!! Been plenty of snow already! I wonder if Kawasaki made any fast snow mobiles...... 😂😂
@@alcapone6946 Thanks for the update mate. Glad you are enjoying the 14. It is nice being able to ride all year here. No need to put the bikes away except when we have Typhoons, Volcanic Eruptions or Earthquakes! Ha! Ha! I rode the 12R for a couple of hours again today. Still no issues :-)
Hi there! Glad to see the zzr/zx 1100's are still popular. I bought a 1998 zzr 1100 D6 model beginning of this year whi h kept me busy till now, wel this is my second zzr 1100, I have lots of respect for these bikes 👌👌👍👍😉
@@Kennyarrow Hi mate, indeed mate. They are great machines if they are looked after. Enjoy yours mate. ZZR Power!! :-)
Ser fedt ud, jeg ramte en Hjort på min under en lignende tur i sommers..
I had this issue on a zzr600 but part of my routine before starting is to look at the oil sight glass luckily I spotted sump was full
My bike is a 07 Hayabusa. Love my bike to bits. But if she didn't exist, my beloved bike would be the ZZR 1200, the 1400 or the ZX12R. You get to ride 2 out of 3 so I envy you mate! Enjoy your new bike, it is a beauty 🙃
@@LINKchris87 Thanks mate, and you continue to enjoy your Busa as well (07 Busa is the best version in my opinion) :-)
The 6 pots seize up just as bad as the originals if you don't keep on top of them. They were a bit of a fad, all the newer bikes have gone back to 4 pots. Owner of three ZZR1100s, one with 6 pots, one with VTR1000 Nissins and one with the originals.
@@rolandblack2773 you are correct in regard to the servicing however for me I prefer the feel of the 6 pots. Of course that is subjective but for me they are a good upgrade.
Effortless cruising on a big and still fast bike. I hope you are still enjoying it 👍
@@simonwoodham6126 oh yes mate Still fast indeed, faster than 95% of riders will ever use.

Hi mate, enjoy it. Mine has had more than a few issues but all the parts are now back from the machine shop and the reassembly of the bike starts tomorrow. :-)
How to put the traffigetor
Not Sure what you are asking mate?
You're a good rider mate... making rapid progress through heavy roads but safe at the same time. 👍 The zzr1100 is a fantastic bike. Probably the best bike from kawasaki ❤
Hi, thanks for the comment. She is a great machine, no doubt about it.
I had my 2002 zx12r since brand new! Ill never get rid of it. I got alot of other bikes as well, but the zx12r is just awesome. I added a quick shifter to mine. If you think you like your zx12r now, wait until you try it was a quick shifter, frickin magic!!
Just need to get it running first mate Main bearing issues. Should not be long I hope.
I have an A2 ZX12R with 4900 miles.. I have a 190 rear Pirelli Diablo Rosso II’s fitted & have no complaints how it rides. Still an awesome bike, even today
Indeed mate, bikes of that period are my favorites.

Hi, you are right Sir. I had to wait until I found a good one.
Great video, picked up a 2000 12R myself this past Dec and road it 4700km across a portion of Canada. I love it, put an ABM bar kit on it and have a custom seat, rebuilt brakes, full Hindle Evolution system w PCV is being installed over the winter. I have done alot to it and i really enjoy it. I will be posting a video up as well. Was never a big fan of my 08 14. Love the 11 but the 12R has so much more motor and handles so much better.
They are all great bikes mate, each with their own "something". Will never sell any of mine. Good luck with all the modifications.
Try to increase idle speed a little bit for the hesitation. It worked for me 😅
I have a much bigger issue with the bike at the moment. I will be posting a video in a few days to explain the issue.
Got mine a few months back and love it I got 2 zzr1100s a zzr1200 and a zrx1200r and like you say it’s quite nimble compared to the others and tons of power a real joy to ride smiles all the way 🏁👌🏻
Indeed mate. Nice selection you have there. Many more smiles to come mate ( or even stupid grins) 🙂

Thanks mate. So happy I found one after years of looking. (Only 3 of them in the Philippines)
Good job
Just picked up a 95 ZX11, just going through it, can’t wait to ride her. Have a Diavel now so it will be a different feel I’m sure
Good for you mate. A great choice.
Great zizi owner!👍
Thanks for the comment mate.
Just bought a zzr 1100 from 1999 with only 23.000km. It also has a wobble in it, I think about replacing the tires too
Hi mate, the ZZR is not known for head shake so there is always a reason. Rotating the concentric adjusters changes the steering head angle and can make the bike a little more susceptible to head shake but that is not really speed dependent, more often related to hitting a bump or pulling a wheelie and landing with the front wheel not in line. Mine was a slow puncture on the rear tyre that caused the problem but definitely an under inflated or worn front tyre could cause a similar issue. I hope you find the issue.
@@MichaelZZRrider Thanks for the reply. I will bring it to the shop next week and will let you know.
@@MichaelZZRrider Just to give this an update. It were 2 things. The main reason was that my headset bearing has to be adjusted/calibrated. It didn't needed to be replaced. And the second thing was indeed both tires replacement because of the 'cupping' as the mechanical said. It's now stable at high speeds!
Glad it is all sorted mate. Enjoy your bike.
It´s the confidence the bike gives you, and the feeling of superiority to anything you meet on the road, that makes the ZX12R such an amazing bike to ride 🥰 It´s just so powerful, planted and smooth, and in the same time you have that little whisper in the back of your mind, telling you all you have to do is twist that throttle a little bit and POW... Off you go!! 😁🤩 I´ve been riding a lot of big Kawasakis, from the late 70´s z1000, mid 80´s Gpz1000RX, mid 2000´s ZRX1200, to my latest one, a ZX10R from 2010 I sold 2y ago because I´m getting to old for these asphalt-rockets :D But the ZX12-R will forever be my favorite.

Hi mate, thanks for the comment. Indeed the way the 12R delivers its performance is addictive. The 14R may be slightly faster but the 12 has "Something" which sets it apart. All great bikes in their own right.
