Minor Derailment Ends Chase of the Ontario Midland
Starting out Thanksgiving week with beautiful weather, Ontario Midland's road crew heads into Williamson, NY along the former New York Central Hojack Line with a single tank car bound for Thatcher while being led by 417, an MLW RS18u transferred from the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad. However, while working the customer, a tank car being picked up unexpectedly jumps the tracks, bringing the crew's day to a halt and my chase to an abrupt end!

After seeing the New York & Lake Erie Railroad's latest acquisition: an MLW M636 purchased from the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad, I figured it was time to once again post a throwback from my sole trip to Scranton, PA, and the only time I ever saw these six-axle behemoths in action! On my last day in the Electric City, a trio of the brutes and an Alco C425 pull grain hoppers and prop...

With the recent news of the sudden closure of the Sumitomo Rubber USA plant shocking the Western New York region, I figured today would be a good day to send my drone up into the skies of Tonawanda, NY for one last flyover of the once bustling tire plant, now reduced to a mere ghost town. Also included is a video from better days, when the plant was in operation and Buffalo Southern's contract ...

Excellent my friend! Please video more of this shortline!
Excellent video once again. Love the weeds, Alco, and props
That’s railroading sometimes, unfortunately. As long as nobody got hurt, no big deal here. Rerail the car, inspect the wheels and rails and send it on its way.
@@Maverick_31 Exactly right, and I'm sure this is comparable to a truck driver getting a flat tire. Only issue I could see is it made the crew's day longer. But oh well, overtime right?
I was thinking "oh neat! Gravity switch! Oh wait I hope it didnt derail oh the description said it was the empty!"😮
"Perfect" sums it up!
😂 I read this before the haul ended 😂😂
Cool catch! Unfortunate for the crew!
@@tfs4499 Thanks! At least it was a minor derailment. I'm sure it could've been much worse.
Rut Roh!!!
Do the ditchlights actually flash like that or is it just from the frame rate?
@@jasonbrunault7902 Nope, that's actually how they flashed.
Looks like they have been changed to LED's. First time I have seen that.
Great video! Wasn’t expecting that either. Good chase while it lasted.
@@Nurvington Thanks a lot!
Bugger ! That's not good .
@@scottleidenberger4401 Not at all
Wow thanks for the catch😮
@@erikmcc804 Of course!
Love
A shame 1013 doesn’t run anymore, she was in planes trains and automobiles, I wonder what she’d need to run again.
Not a shock for a ALCO/MLW when I witnessed a MLW RS-10/RS-18 (not sure of model)pull a train of 100 to 120 cars 70 or so miles with decent grades when I was 9-10 with it going no more then five miles a hour. great switching. Thank You.
Great video and thanks for sharing. Dave
Cool video!
Nice video ! Have a great Thanksgiving !
Thanks for the video, Matty! It’s great seeing an ALCo run long hood forward even though the short hood technically is the front of the locomotive.
Not necessarily. In this case, yes, the short hood is the front. But I've seen a handful of examples over the years where the long hood is the front.
@ Right, Matty. When I lived on Long Island, the LIRR ran their C420 locomotives long hood forward.
Thanks Matty, it is always good to see a Local Train Switching Local Customers, something long gone on our Railways.
Great video.
Such a great view at 18:15!
Nineteen cars, one RS32 and a lot of railroad action for this Friday night. Very cool video, Matty!!!
Nice out on the line documentary!🇺🇸
I just LOVE that the sound of the single note horn on this locomotive.
This road certainly provides loyal service to agriculture and associated agribusiness along the lake plain of Lake Ontario. Thanks for covering.
Neal is in fine form running his favorite locomotive!
@@Watertender-lu7vj Not Neal, he was off this day.
Good for him! Thought it was his voice on the radio but now that you say it the horn pattern is different.
Always look forward to watching 2035 in action.
Very nice I was wondering when you would get back to fall rd r/r and get to see their alco work such a scenic route thank you
I think CSX, UP and CN were the only grain cars not represented on this train. That bolted track is in great shape. Barely a wiggle from those cars.
These Locos on this line are so fun to watch and listen to.
15:45 was that a gate with cement barriers put up against it for the spur shown in the next scene at ARMY?
It is
Six-axle Centuries - you nailed it, Matt!
@@badmojamma I love these old beasts! Thankfully the New York & Lake Erie Railroad decided to rehab one, so now I won't have to drive 5 hours to see them in action lol
Other than the MLW, proud products of upstate New York!
I love those big uglys Matty! Lot’s of beautiful Alco chugging!🇺🇸
Cool catches!
Back in the 1990'as, I was in the National Guard, and we spent two summers at Tobyhanna for retraining. On my off time, I went to that crossing and explored. In the woods, across from the tower I found the old trash dump. I dug up the old train order semaphores, some very rusted metal oil cans with DL&W stampings, and lots of antique bottles to include bottles for the acid used on the telegraph systems.
Really great footage and closing sequence. Rich railroad history on full display in that region!
Awesome catch Matt ! What a nice suprise for today. The C424 looks beautiful in it's new paint scheme. The first shot at the bridge was very cool as the sun lights up the ex-CP Alco. It looks and sounds great for a sixty year old loco. Great video 😁👍🏻And those other two Alco's are nice as well.
@@MikeG42 Thanks a lot!
Hi Matty, lots of interesting leftovers on that line! That C636 looks like a real brute! 🇺🇸
nice catch, a few days ago i saw the same train leading the local over here in the lehigh valley!
Great catch ! Nice paint job.
Thanks!
Just when its seemed like all hope was lost for Alcos in southwest NY, we get a repainted BSOR C424 and amazingly, a repainted M636..... I would have never thought NY&LE would do something like that.
Seriously dude! The NY&LE was originally supposed to use the M636 as a parts donor, so I'm glad they're gonna be putting it in service. I'm stoked to see it running!
@@mattygunn693 if the 1013 and BSOR 2010 get back running I'm moving back to Chautauqua County
@Jfrmr1 I have heard the BSOR has plans to get 2010 up and running again, so there is that! I don't know about 1013 though, I haven't heard much on that one.
These videos are great,my Son sends them to me. We,er big rail fans all of my Uncles and my Dad worked on the railroad.
Great catch of NS actually doing the interchange! And an interesting way of doing the interchange - drop the cars they brought with them in that yard you were filming from at the south end of Pre Emption St, then pick up the cars to take back from what looks like a siding in the satellite photos around the curve further up Pre Emption St. Always interesting to see how they handle things in short line setups with perhaps less than ideal track layouts.
Awesome video with a horn salute 👍😎🚂🇺🇸👍
Great video!
