“Free” is one of the all time great charts in all of DCI
Ralph is a natural at rhythmic counterpoint. 🥁🔥🎶
I still remember watching this on a VHS tape when i was 15
Now this is a treasure!
Love the blend of old and newer drum parts in “Free”. Such a great tune.
BD always formidable.
They didn’t win high drums that year but they got my vote. Ralph can write!
What was their shows theme?
I love how the drums sound - everyone plays through the heads ! Well done
BBBRRRAAAAVVVO!!!!! Absolutely OUTSTANDING!!! 🤘🏻❤️🥁🥁🥁🥁❤️🤘🏻
I was at this show in 86….my band director in HS brought a bunch of us here to see what Drum Corp was - he marched SCV in the early 80’s. When I saw what happened at 3:23 my decision was made to try out in 87 for Velvet Knights and marched that year (my Junior year of HS)
Amazing
I. Wish. I. Was. One. Of. Those. Grils. With. The. Flags
Amazing ❤❤❤❤
One of the best snarelines of all time
Dude, best snare line ever and it’s not close. The hands in that line were absurd.
Scott Johnson said 83 BD was the best Devs snare line
I marched 87-92 Freelancers... Got to see this show almost every night of tour! Also, on another note... Anybody else notice how much "older" kids looked back then? That dude at 1:13 looks like hes about 36 with a wife, two kids, a mortgage and shitty car he can't afford to fix!
🎅 Clara Vanguard, am i right!?
I’m shocked this footage exists. Thanks so much for sharing. Awesome. What an absolutely awesome corps. RIP Tom.
I was at this show, BD rules !!! VK close 2nd.
In my opinion the best drum solo ever, high drums in 87.
No.
PeopleAlone what a great chart!!! Such an underrated song. One of my favorites
Agreed - was only just listening to this last night!
Greetings from south Florida!!!!
The opener in this video has more energy than the Finals recording...
Hey Scott, go into the way back machine and see if you can find a full show for BD in '76. Thanks Cindy.
Classic BD. THANK YOU for posting
The years SCV performed the winter music stuff made me question if it was summer. My fave to this day is Shostakovich Festive Overture…
My introduction to the baritone bugle was at CSULB, “I play a trombone”
The teal Yamaha line was badass…
CYMBALS ROCK 😎 My first year on tour was 1976 with the Velvet Knights. We had an all girl cymbal line made up of me, Lori and Susan.
Love the muscle up
Is the drum major wearing denim jeans?
Greatest year in DCI.
Awesome
I love how the cymbals are in the center of the drill during long stretches of the opener - even when the rest of the battery are not.
SC was very good for this time of the season. I was judging percussion analysis at this show. Those were the days.😎
There was Field, Ensemble and GE. Which one?
@@ImVee10 PA became ensemble later.
@@xkmendlt4290 No, “judge,” there were 10 points for ENSEMBLE Visual, Brass and Percussion, 1984-1987 & 1990-1993 inclusive.
@@ImVee10 Ensemble or analysis same basic caption. Maybe we had already changed to ensemble by then. Long time ago…..😳 WTH
Excellent
The Harlem nocturne soloist was John Meehan (BD Brass Arranger)
fuccing based
There are so many talented female snare drummers who marched D.C.I. over the years and continue today. I marched with Beth Gottlieb in the snare line of the Spirit of Atlanta in 1980 under Tom Float. Beth never missed a beat and was a strong player. Good to see the "older" gals keeping their chops up. Keep on drumming!
Opening that made you jump out of the seat Now, you jump off the stadium to get away from the crap called band corps
I agree with your comment 100%. Today is May 6th 2022
Literally nobody calls it band corps, troll.
Does the snare line visual have a name? That's awesome stick work 😀
No I just made it up one afternoon at a park just me and the center snare figured it out. It was loosely based on some thing that Kingsmen did a long long time ago in the back of my mind
ABSOLUTELY
I see the Salyers Stealth pad down there! Good stuff$
Actually our pads are all Offworld
Damn They were good! The Arrangements were NO JOKE!!!!!
This was the first year I watched DCI as a sophomore in high school. I have watched the Finals version of this so many times, I almost know every bit by heart. Back then, I had no idea about "in-season changes" and how shows evolved, so it's very cool to watch this and hear where there are differences to how it ended up by Finals! Plus, I saw John Meehan on the Funliner podcast with several recent BD members talking about how he played the Harlem Nocturne solo, so I want to see that again!
Oh...and they just don't do drum corps like THAT anymore!!
@@GraysonBuzz they turned into a marching band superimposed on the three ring circus. As did many former Real Drum and bugle Corps. You can thank DCI for that. They killed one of the greatest youth programs throughout the country.
I love this show! Cadets marched a wee bit faster this year though.
That opener, wow, still gives me goosebumps after all these years.
73 argonne rebels blows this away
🤔🧐Please provide a link for our 👀 s and 👂s🧐🤔
Side #1 Bitches. Side 2 can kick rocks.
All the wonders of drum corps are in this opener. The entire show is a stunning achievement still stands strong against the entirety of drum corps history.
I had to read a few comments to get the "early season" flavor of the show. I'm used to seeing BD polished. Loved it entirely any way. Even Harlem Nocturne without the feather fans.
