    I’m shocked this footage exists. Thanks so much for sharing. Awesome. What an absolutely awesome corps. RIP Tom.

    Every time I hear a Wayne Downey/Tom Float Devils arrangement, I know that the sun is shining somewhere.

    I marched with several of the guys in this drumline in 1980-Spirit of Atlanta. Most were from
    Auburn University and left when Float went from Atlanta to Concord. Guy Hilsman, Jeff Griffin, Bob Beck (R.I.P.), Jeff Stallworth. Also Jeff from Lonestar Percussion (owner) marched Spirit.
    Float took a good nucleus of drummers with him as he started his domination of DCI percussion during the years that followed. Tom always had clean lines. Thanks for posting this.

      Looking at the 1981 Finals recap, SCV won by 0.3 over BD who was a whopping 1.6 behind Vanguard in drums. Yes, a change was needed. Yikes.

      I was at first camp in the parking lot waiting for the busses with the Spirit cats. Float didn’t have to take them, they wanted to be where he was teaching, no matter what. Nice meeting them and Float for the first time. We shot a lot of hoops on tour

      @@jbu999 Hey John. Cool to hear from one of the "old school"
      guys. Guess we're still kicking after all these years. Still drumming
      and teaching everyday. Good to hear from you.

    5 in the pit... same size as a timp line. Makes sense for the times.

      One of each keyboard instrument - xylo, marimba, vibrapbone, glock, plus a timpanist. That was the logic of the times.

    • @tommytimp
      @tommytimp 4 роки тому +1

      @@victorlee8930 In 82, some corps might have an extra body in the pit just to play toms or Latin parts or set, but then Garfield grounded a whole rack of stuff and won with it in 83, so by 84 EVERYBODY had a whole frontline ensemble.
