I self taught myself. My first step was to learn the treble clef notation. I painfully tried to read note for note from piano hymn book. Two notes at a time. Over time I got hold of classical guitar sheet. It opened the door for my learning spree. I attempted Trinity worldwide exams 5 th grade in my first go. I got through. To make it short there is no one way to learn guitar. There are many approaches..... Learn to stand up first, then walk, then run....... Do the basics right.

I've just started trying to learn, the amount of information is overwhelming and everyone has different opinions on where to start and what to learn as a beginner. Where do I start? I can play notes but should I be trying to learn the pentatonic scale? Or something else? As I said, it's overwhelming 😂

I picked a guitar 14 years ago, I took it with me everywhere I traveled, but never had the time to practice. 14 years forward I got married , have a child who is 5 now and my desire for the guitar came back. I wish I was consistent in the 14 past years. Now at 38 started learning with true desire to commit, consistency is the key to any skill or habit in life.

While there is some good advice in this video, I’m going to be the devil’s advocate that tells you to go get a teacher. You can’t build good habits when you don’t know what they are. Like proper bends, good wrist and hand form (and it really does matter)….i’ve played with musicians that didn’t know basic time signature which is lesson number one for every music student. You can’t learn properly when you don’t have the first building block. Everything from there will end up wrong. A music lesson is only 20$ but priceless to your learning process.

i can absolutely agree i have played for less than two years but have mastered things such as sweep picking economy picking alternate picking, even a bit of music theory. It all has humble beginnings but thanks to technology we can learn so much quicker. Pinch harmonics were too much to even think of but now it’s nothing.

One thing I will say about Tip 2: buy the guitar you want to play. The acoustic is not a prerequisite for playing electric guitar. They are different instruments and play different kinds of music. I learned acoustic in grade school and I didn't enjoy it at all. In fact, I couldn't wrap my head or hands around it and I just played piano in guitar class for the rest of the year instead [which I was already good at]. But now as an adult, I find myself wanting to make social content and master a skill that is personal to me. So I picked up a couple electric guitars and I'm having a blast just playing riffs and solos with a distortion amp. It's a completely different experience and it feels like I just bought a Soulsborne game that I need to master all these techniques to defeat the bosses [songs]. And watching all these cool content creators with their unique aesthetic and playstyle has me motivated to find my voice. Granted, there are plenty for acoustic as well [like Bernth], but it comes down to what you want out of the instrument. My guitar teacher said it to me this way: if a mom comes into the store and asks what to buy her teenage son, it's not a matter of starting him out on a beginner guitar; it's about what the kid wants to play. If he wants to play heavy metal, then get him the most aggressive looking guitar with a distortion amp and he'll be on the thing 5 hours a day. But get him an acoustic and he'll be bored within a week - just like I was. With that being said, don't be a gear head. Learn to play the instrument before you go and buy all the advanced pickups and the most expensive amps and 10 FX pedals. Electric guitar is definitely more of an investment than acoustic, but you don't need to empty your piggy bank to get good sounding gear. You can get good quality stuff for $300-500 off Amazon, and that'll last you 1-2 years until you're through the beginning stage. No beginner needs to buy a $1000 guitar or a $800 amp with $500 worth of FX pedals. I definitely agree with your 5th tip. What makes it fun for me is decorating the guitar and learning to play different styles of music on each one. So I have my glam rock HSS strat tuned in Drop D and my Eb tuned HSS for learning classical pieces, and an HH rhythm guitar for jazz. Eventually I'll pick up a metal guitar.... eventually...

I taught my self.. I did not quit after the first year. I played from I was like 5-6 till (born in 85) till 2015 when I sold my last guitar. My skilled had staggered and I did not evolve. Started teaching my self bass in October 2023, and that made me buy a guitar in February, then bought another guitar, and some time before summer bought yet another guitar. I've evolved, but that was due to a 14 hour semester for music theory I joined in the end of February which upped the game! Before that I had learned everything by ear, even taught my self piano by ear in 2017, teaching my self chords and songs that popped up in my head. I will say I have great ears but understanding some theory opened up boxes in my head!

@@maxwell.orioko 14 hours is not enough, it's enough for basics so you can understand where notes are on a note sheet, learn about circle of fifths and theory behind scales and modes and where the notes are on a fretboard on a string instrument, and how the notes are setup on a piano, for example how the black keys are sharps on the piano and where the C is and the arrangement of notes. like C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C and on guitar from the last string it's E on the loose note, F on the first fret, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C,C# D, D# and then E again on the 12th fret then it just repeats, same arrangement for the A, D, G, B, and the first E string 🙂 But Music theory is a big chapter but the basics is important! 🙂

@@maxwell.orioko The semester was 60 minutes a week. Started in the end of February this year and ended at the end of May, some weeks we even did 2 hours sessions because my teacher of the semester had concerts and had to skip the 60 minutes for one week, but we managed to get thru from end of Feb to end of May 🙂 Absolutely worth it, but was also like 1200 dollars worth of money so didn't come cheap 😅

Ouch no never Marty.... You might not understand this unless you've seen the correct way to play what he's teaching you the wrong way but nearly every video he does he teaches you the wrong way. Occasionally he gets it right but rarely. A couple much better sources that are nearly perfect I have found is guitar zero 2 hero, okay maybe he's like 99.5% accurate.... But things so minor it really doesn't make a difference. Most of his lessons are right on. Also guitar lessons 365. Without a doubt the most accurate source I have found so far. He gets it right all the time and will even throw in lots of odd facts you never needed to know about the correct way so-and-so plays it or the way they play it live versus the way it's played on the recording. Guitar lessons 365, guitar zero 2 hero, and there's also a very very good country song teacher, if I remember correctly I think his channel is called learn guitar favorites or something generic like that but he's very accurate and extremely good and makes real easy to follow guides on the correct way to play loads and loads of very popular country hits the people know. If you do a little bit of searching on Google I'm sure you will quickly find a massive massively large Reddit thread with a discussion of who the best UA-cam guitar instructors are. There are all kinds of people listed on there some better than others. Some kind of good but kind of not accurate like Marty teachers include Justin guitar, Andy guitar, etc. One thing I really love about guitar zero 2 hero channel is that he has a huge amount of playlists sorted into easy to follow lessons with hit after hit sorting the playlist by the artist name such as oasis, Ed sheeran, Billie eilish, Tom petty, youtube, the beatles, etc, etc. In fact in the last couple weeks I believe he dropped a lesson on how to play a couple of Goo Goo Dolls hits as well including the correct way with the weird tunings they use and a good enough standard version for those who don't want to experiment with crazy tunings. It is actually kind of important what you learn, you don't want to log a ton of hours learning from people like Marty learning songs the wrong way. People will notice in some cases and other musicians will definitely spot it immediately if you aren't playing it correctly. Not to mention if you pursue band gigs or anything you don't want to play the songs wrong. As far as a capo and tuner I highly recommend a cheap but good tuner such as D'Addario which has very tiny tuners and very good tuners that can clip to the headstock, I would stay away from the awful and cheap crap like snark tuners. Get something better accurate and good. Same for a capo, they're not that expensive, you can get one for $20 which is not that much if you actually are serious about learning guitar. Forget the BS pencil capo nonsense..... Two things you should always keep clipped to your headstock at all times, a tuner and capo, definitely a capo, probably a tuner as well. They're both so tiny and so convenient they never leave my head stock, both are there at all times so whenever I need a capo or to tune up, it's only seconds worth. Oh also the app ultimate guitar..... Even the free version without the subscription is still amazing for pretty much any song you want to learn. Finding the correct table is sometimes useful but usually I match it to an Acura video and then find a mostly accurate table to go with it for when I'm memorizing the song without having to re-watch the video a ton...... The speaking of watching the video to learn no better edited lesson videos can be found then guitar zero 2 hero. He does a surprisingly fantastic editing job or his people do or something.... He always includes the coordinates, you can see them on the screen as the chorus or verse etc is being played so you know the next cord coming up, the strumming pattern is also on screen at all times, as well as the fretboard showing where your fingers go for each cord in real time as the chords are played. Amazing editing..... Guitar 365 is also pretty darn good with multiple angles of the pick hand, fret hand, etcetera all at once.

learning guitar since 2016 by myself and i can confirm that ''just play'', ''have the guitar seeable/grabable'' and ''make it fun'' are literally all you need except a guitar obviously. Very well explained in the video. Deserved the comment.
