Literally 5 dollar for a cup here
🤯
I tried a community tank with neoacaridina and mbuna fry 😊 It was a sight to see ua-cam.com/video/qLDbFFbyUDk/v-deo.htmlsi=ImEJM2w_fD7boZUB
One subject not mentioned is TDS, it seems a very grey area Matt, can you advise please?
The ideal TDS is normally around 200-300 for neocaridina shrimp. It's not often something that gets worried about as I have seen and heard them doing well in a much wider range of TDS levels. As long as you avoid really extreme levels they generally do fine. The issue with TDS is it's a measurement of everything, so everything can have a effect on TDS. Plant foods, hardscape and just about everything in between can mess around with it. If you're looking at just keeping neocaridina shrimp then I wouldn't chase the ideal parameters. But if you're looking at breeding them in large numbers then engineering your water with RO water and specific mineral mixes is probably your best bet.
@@BRSfresh Thank you very much. I had one tank go as high as 1100ppm and some shrimp, especially Amano have survived. I will purchase some RO water and try to get closer to 400ppm. It shocked me to see how widely the readings over my tanks varied.
can we get these in the uk?
👋 Not directly from us unfortunately
Excuse me, I really enjoyed your video but BIG question: how much long these tiny fishes live? I bought some grey corydoras and a group of cardinal tetras (the ones red and blue, very similar to neon tetras) I was told that all these fishes can live up to max 5 years... so I wonder if spend other money for these very tiny fishes is worthy or not 😮
I think if you spend money on the fish you want to see and those that you connect with then it’s never a waste 😊
Ive been running co2 from the 2 bottle setup (that i learned from your channel 😁) with daily ferts (flourish and flourish excel), about 6 root tabs, and about 2 inches of the enriched aquasoil substrate on a 10g extremely heavily planted tank with a large variety of plants with no fish in it (only some pest snails that hitched a ride from the store) so i dont necessarily have to worry about killing anything by having too much co2. I dont even have a co2 checker because of that fact. And i never turn the co2 off because no fish to kill, pretty much just an underwater garden and my question is: should i put my diffuser near my HOB filter intake? Its literally SO planted that i dont think the filter flow even really reaches the other side where the diffuser is but theoretically wouldnt i get better absorption if the co2 bubbles are going into the filter and back into the water that way? So theres more dispersion of co2-ified water flow..?
Also, is there such thing as too much co2 if I don't have any fish to worry about killing? im just basically feeding the plants all the nutrients i can think of in all the ways i know of
Good question! If the flow isn't getting to the other side of the tank, making a change in your diffuser location to better cover the tank is a good idea. In the case of an enclosed canister, near the intake is a good option as the gas will stay within the tubing/canister before being released into the tank. In the case of HOB, you run the risk of losing gas in the open top before it's full dissolved. If you're plants are healthy, I wouldn't worry about it. If they're showing signs of CO2 deficiency, consider two diffusers (you can get a y connector for around $25) then run one on either side. Again, if all is well, I think you're good :)
Also a good question - yes, that is definitely a thing. Biggest concern would be fish, but in your case, plants can be negatively affected by a large drop in pH from the increased CO2 amongst other things like nutrient imbalances
@BRSfresh I also don't have a heater and never do water changes only top ups. I know I've heard some plants do better with warmer waters but again it's so planted that I think a heater would barely fit and/or throw off the look that I'm going for and kinda be an eye sore to the jungle I have in there. Think it'd be worth trying to hide a heater inside the hob filter? Also should I be doing water changes if no fish in there? It's currently been running for about 2 months and absolutely no nitrate
Nice use of em
You can tell your betta was super curious about the cleaning. Mine does the same thing.
I love that about this guy - always comes up to say hi :)
In process of re-establishing a much larger planted setup. Had never used CO2 before in my smaller tanks which may have housed 1 or 2 plants. I find your videos very informative, clear, concise with little or no BS filler. Initially thought about trying the homemade 2-bottle set up but it’s short term and messy. Setting up a 60gal and considering using the tank and gauge-based format shown in this video (of course dependent on setup and continued costing). My concern is on sourcing replacement CO2 (refillable vs non-refillable) bottles and $$$$. New subscriber. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Welcome to the channel! I'm running a 5g tank on 75g and haven't replaced it in about 4months so far - Got it filled for around $15 I believe...maybe a bit less. Hope your build goes well!
I thought that was Matt in the thumbnail!
We are big fans at BRSfresh!
I've never seen the tip about the angled siphon end, thats helpful.
Thanks! It’s hard to find things that some people haven’t thought of before. This is one that I have used so many times, I had to share it.
great video! I like how this video in specific features a lot of new tips. Most videos have the same few repeat tips but this one offers lots of stuff I haven't thought about before. I especially liked the filter floss to clean corner algae
Thanks! So glad to hear it was helpful 🙌
Good idea that you for sharing.
welcome to the secret club
🤫😉
Thank you so much, this was very helpful. (all the way from Gilbert, AZ)
Great to hear!
You mention using RO water in one of your tanks. Are you remineralizing with the addition of ferts or is are you also doing something else?
👋 Yes, remineralizer and a GH booster
THANKS
How about an external defuser? Any good?
Inline diffusers work well - you get the benefit of both not seeing the diffuser in the tank as well as a much higher dilution of the gas in the water
I have left the weight on stems before. It depends on the stems as to how successful you will be. Anything that is easily damaged or has a tendency to melt will not do as well. Also, plants that draw strictly from the roots won’t do as well. Brazilian Pennywort does really well with a weight on the root base, ludwigia is a hit or miss.
Thanks for sharing!
How do you stick the monte carlo on the wood? It looks really nice
Great question- gel glue is technically an option but I wouldn’t recommend it. We used a green thread and just wrapped it around the plant and wood. After a short time the plant grows over it and you can’t see it
Can plants grow in gravel?
For sure! Just add a root tab to the base around the plant every 6 weeks or so. That should give the plant what it needs to thrive. Be careful vacuuming right around the base -You run the risk of vacuuming up the nutrients you put there. Keep 3” distance away from the base and you should be fine cleaning
@@BRSfresh thanks a lot 🫶
YEP THIS IT THE PLAN FOR ME
Sir please share more verities of plants that are easy to maintain (No CO2) and easy to grow. - Plants that can grow on rocks or woods. - Plants that can grow in substrate.
More to come! 🙌
@@BRSfresh Thanks sir 🙏🏻
Nice informative video 😊
Thanks for watching!
I'm new to this type of filter. So please forgive me if I sou d dumb. With this filter, you no longer need the other ones that hang on the back of the tank. Is that correct?
No worries! Yes, you are right - hang on the back (HOB) or canister filters are both effective. Typically, canister filters like this are chosen so that the tank appearance is cleaner (less stuff on it). Amongst other benefits like being quieter, they allow you to more easily customize different media inside which can be great for specific setups and needs. Thanks for watching and keep asking questions! :)
WE NEED NANO LIST PART 2 BROTHER ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT LINE UP❕️❕️❕️💯👍🏾👍🏾
This video is from MJ aquascape from the Netherlands he has more videos bro
My check valve is definitely too far from my diffuser. What placement do you recommend for hang on back filtered tanks? I have my diffuser at the bottom middle of one side of my tank. I have two filters running on either end of a 40 breeder. Is there a better place than this?
👋! Set the diffuser about 2” back off the top rim and you should be good. That’s my go-to placement on multiple tanks and have had no problems. Too low (like the bottom of the tank) has resulted in the gas not effectively making it to the diffuser in my experience.
Wow nothing on it's effect on ph and hardness.
Fair point - this video was intended to just be an overview of what you get when you buy a box from us so as a customer you can see the quantity and quality. That said, I like the idea of a separate video on this topic. Look for that coming. Thanks for the feedback!
Ty for your videos...helped me alot ❤
Great to hear!
Why do you want to get rid of tannins. They're beautiful and beneficial to fish and other animals.
You’re definitely not wrong! They are beneficial and we do have some Catappa leaves bringing a nice color to a riverbed set up also in our studio. But some people don’t care for that look and want a more clear-water pristine aquarium. So just providing a path to get there if that’s what someone would prefer.
@@BRSfresh It's a shame ppl don't make the top priority the benefit of the fish.
There’s no doubt that can be the case on a number of levels. Wrong tank size or tank mates. Over-feeding and over-crowding. Not doing water changes and properly medicating/quarantining. Not paying attention to pH and water parameters as well as temperature. However a tank without tannins can still be a very healthy environment for our inhabitants. But maybe we disagree? Either way, thanks for your perspective!
totally skipped the o-ring 😐
That’s definitely in there. I’ve made the mistake of turning a canister filter on without it, and you know very quickly if you forgot that part 🫣😁 This canister has been running under the tank for a long time now so we’re good, but you make a great point that it should be called out that people must make sure thats there!
Being in Arizona, I love using native Ironwood and Cholla, but I just love driftwood in general, it is all amazing to work, design, and decorate with.
Love it! Ironwood sounds amazing 🙌
That Monte Carlo is looking super good!
The more it dangles down like a curtain off of the wood, the more I love it!
I love these other options as I'm so over seeing neon, cardinal & most tetras in general, as well as the harlequin rasboras. Rainbowfish & other rasboras are nice to see for a change, as well as danios. I've got rummynose & galaxy (CPDs) rasboras & love them, though they are a bit too shy, but look amazing in my heavily-planted 10g long tank.
We have a group of Rummynose in the 75g in the studio- they’re the best. Such great schooling. Need more! 😁
I don’t have angelfish but this is cool
What about using a air stone in the same tank would it be detrimental to the co2 amount
Good question - in our studio we have used a strong air pump to create surface agitation/oxygenation in a 36" long tank with the CO2 diffuser on the opposite side. Plants are thriving and CO2 levels are stable so haven't had any issues
Have you have seen rotala orange juice grow horizontaly? I never had until one day I noticed it doing so in my 40 gal guppy fry tank. I let it go and it has now made a complete run around the perimeter of the tank.
👋 Pretty common for OJ to run the tank. Can happen if not planted densely or if in high light situations. You can try to trim to train it and replanting the cuttings in a more crowded way should help them grow vertically and not quite as vigorously.
Thank you for the advice. I actually don't mind it growing in this way in this particular tank. It's producing a ton of stems that I can trim and plant more densely.
sounds like everything is healthy!
Thank you for the video! Question: would you suggest capping it so it doesn’t leak too much nutrients in the water column? I heard that about ADA Amazonia, wondering if the same thing here.
👋! I haven’t had an issue with excessive nutrients from UNS Controsoil. If you were trying to hide the look of it, sure you could do that but otherwise I just leave it as is and it’s fine.
Controsoil has low nutrients compared to most other soils, no need to cap any aquasoil off unless its something like pond soil.
Could you leave the tissue cultures in the containers while submersing them for the first time. The hope is to reduce melt by minimising the transition.
Great question! Based on my experience, while it’s possible to have melting occur as they become accustomed to their new environment, I have never experienced that to any sort of extent that I would feel it’s worth the trouble of an acclimation process. For me, take them out, rinse them off and plant.
Did you glue or thread method?
Green thread!
CAN YOU MIX SOIL GRAIN SIZES?
💯 just personal preference. If you check out the video on our channel where we built a riverbed tank in a long aquarium, you’ll see how we mix, sand, gravel, and soil together as well.
IF I DONT USE SPIDER WOOD BECAUSE OF THE WHITE FUNGUS WHAT WOOD DO YOU SUGGEST IN A 20GA LONG? GREAT VIDEO
Thanks! I think first I would suggest that you do use spider wood if that’s what you’d like to have. The biofilm is easily manageable and not something I would sacrifice what I want just to avoid. That said, my next go to would be any of the driftwoods - Malaysian, Amazon, Pacific. Combine 2-3 pieces of whichever you choose to create something cool. Throw a pack of Seachem Purigen in your filter to deal with the tannins if you don’t want to presoak or boil!
It goes away after a bit or let stuff eat it.
The white fungus is actually just a bio film. Shrimp, snails, and fish will clean it up for you. Spiderwood is not the only wood that grows it. I had it all over some Malaysian driftwood as well.
THIS IS A VERY HELPFUL VIDEO. THANKS
Glad to hear!
PREPPING FOR MY 1ST NANO TANK A 20GA LONG WITH A 20 GA TALL SUMP
That's awesome! We have a couple longs that we've done builds on our channel (one planted and one rock only...UNS 90L and 90B). That style is definitely a favorite. What's your rock/wood plan?
THANKS FOR T HE LIST. I AM PREPARING TO DO A 20 GA LONG PLANTED.
Great info as always, Matt. I’m gonna get some shrimp for my 75 gallon as a cleanup crew.
That’s a lot of plants. Also, monstera Thai Constellation and that anthurium veitchii? Those plants are giants, they’re gonna grown bigger faster in that humid environment.🙈
They're both doing great!
I see a lot of people do that paper towel super glue method so I know it works. but I just had a thought, what happens to that little piece of paper tower in your tank over time? does it just dissolve and rot away messing up your water?
👋! In our experience, the key to making the paper towel or a little ball of cotton work with your gel glue is to make sure that it is completely covered in the glue. When it dries, it is essentially just a hard object and won’t dissolve.
Hey, if you’re gonna make videos, unless you really gotta know reasoning mineral oil, never evaporates that’s the reason you use it or glycerin
No doubt that's a popular reason (mentioned at 2:49) but a couple of these others aren't bad either!
