What Do You Wear to a "Black Tie Optional" Wedding?

A viewer asked: "I've been invited to a wedding taking place in a museum of fine arts. The invitation states “black tie optional.” My first thought was “I’m wearing my formal kilt with Prince Charlie jacket and vest”. How Do You Style a Kilt for a Non-Binary Look?

A Tartan to Meet King Charles III? What do you wear to meet royalty?
The Scottish Society of the Virginia Highlands puts on a Burns Dinner every year. When I used to go I saw the full gambit from day wear to Prince Charlie. I would split the difference and wear tweeds, mainly because that was all I had at the time.
I went to my first Burns supper last year; it was hosted by Meat Pie restaurant. No one wore formal at all. I wore Nordic Heritage Semi Trad kilt with a fair Isle sweater, 2 tone grey ancient blue hose, Viking black/grey Sporran, and Oxford shoes. I got many compliments. Only a few others wore kilts, & they did shirt & tie or polo shirt. Non kilt wearers wore business or casual.
I've been to a couple put on by the local historical society. There were probably 200 people there in all levels of dress from Prince Charlie's and black tie all the way down to those ren-faire lace-up shirts. There was no fashion police telling people they were under/over dressed. Everybody just had a good time. For me, I wore a kilt with a sweater, hose, shoes, semi-formal sporran.
I attended my first Burns Supper 3 years ago held at a nearby pub. It was only the second time I'd worn a kilt, and that kilt was a cheap black acrylic utility kilt that my wife bought for me. I did have inexpensive kilt hose (gray) and wore black boots and a gray pullover sweater. I was fairly self conscious walking in, and noticed many of the patrons were wearing kilts - from casual utility kilts to formal attire with Prince Charlie jackets. We sat down and when the host came over in his formal PC attire to greet us, I mentioned that I was new to wearing a kilt, and that I didn't mean to offend folks if I was wearing stuff incorrectly. He said that what I was wearing was fine, and that he was glad my wife and I came. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening, and that started me on this journey of finding out what _is_ proper, and purchasing more correct clothing. This channel has been a _big_ part of my quest to "do things right". I still wear a utility kilt to local Highland Games (a much higher quality utility kilt than that first one), but now have an excellent Semi-Trad kilt, proper sporran and belt, and an Argyle vest that I can wear to more formal occasions. I'm really looking forward to my next Burns Supper, as I'll be wearing that Semi-Trad then. I'll also wear it on St. Patrick's day, even though I know that's an Irish celebration, not Scottish 😄
Our host here requires what sh calls, business dress. Jacket and tie for me. Nice dress or pants suit for women.
Very cool, also, which 2 kilts are you both wearing in this video? Thank you.
Yes. Semi-formal. I wore a formal sporran, nice blue argyll jacket and waistcoat. Not the price Charlie. However, I did see a few there, but they were in a minority.
I have a mossy Scottish bonnet that is made up of greys, greens, and earth tones, which I think go with all of my kilts. I have a grey and black herringbone Harris Tweed Deer Stalker that I wear with my kilts when I use with my kilts when I’m wearing my tweed jacket and waistcoat because it seems more dressy. I like how Rocky looks in his slate flat cap, but I don’t think it looks as good on me as it does him with a kilt, though I do like how it looks on me with jeans or slacks.
I highly recommend buying swatches of tartans you’re considering ordering! I bought swatches of 2 tartans I’d already had made into kilted skirts, and it’s a lot easier to carry the swatches around than the whole garment if you’re shopping for coordinating items. 👍
I've been to weddings in a Prince Charlie and beach weddings in a kilt with Guayabera or toned down tropical print shirt and flip flops on the beach, as I call it, Island Highland.
Love the Island Highland name, lol
I don't think I've ever encountered a made to order tartan that wasn't highly derivative of an existing pattern and/or looked like ass.
The dirk is 12 inches or longer, and has a broad single edge. The FS is 6-7.5 inches, depending on the model. The Dirk is Scottish, the FS, English......
I think your comments on the direct question - wear a kilt to the wedding or not - are spot on. Just ask the Groom (and Bride). They said "Black Tie" so the implication is there that a formal or semi-formal kilt "outfit" would be appropriate... but ask. As to the +1 who isn't likely to want to wear some full highland attire like a kilt skirt (USA Kilt's Hostess Skirt 👍), just have her wear a matching tartan sash. They look great with a formal or semi-formal dress, and don't necessarily scream "Scottish Highlands".
I find that PCs are a bit over the top for most situations. It's hard for me to justify wearing a PC for anything but marching in a band. They remind me of those ridiculous coats that old-fashioned circus conductors wore.
Not the Barnum & Bailey special!
My grey breamar has gotten a lot of use at weddings both fancier and more toned down. I’ve also used just a tweed vest and tie for a country club wedding in the mountains.
I wonder when I'm on USa Kilts website, in the buying process to filling address, why don't have Thailand om the available country on the list? or overseas shipping not available to yjis region?
Give us a call or email us at sales@usakilts.com and we can help you directly!
I have a piece of the American Heritage Antique if you want a photo!
You are more polite than I am. It is not a Scottish weapon from the time when kilts were worn. Heck, short kilts aren't so historical either. Different time periods. Might as well strap on a Colt .45. Stick with with the costume.
I’ve made a few exceptions. I found a Scally cap with purple plaid that’s near match to my Passion of Scotland kilt & I got so many compliments on that combo. But that hat doesn’t work for ANY of my other kilts. Lol. Overall I do tend to go with the subtle pattern or solid color caps. There’s a few patchwork newsboy caps where it’s all subtle colors & I do like those & own a few.
Wear what works best for you!!
Black or slate in a very subtle pattern (at most) always works.
I feel like the old grandfather shirts with multiple vertical stripes need to come back. Most nowadays are solid color, but 30 years ago that wasn’t the case
I'm there with the flat caps. I get almost as many compliments on my caps as I do for my kilts.
Good to know!
Victorian dress cantle
Bring back combat boots and hiking boots
Get rid of ghillie brogues. And double buckle brogues
Rocky would definitely agree with the buckle brogues!
I love it "I Am KILT MAN". Leader of Team Tartan. The plaid superheroes.
I wear a grey tweed flat cap with my grey argyle jacket and vest.
Like Rocky, I like flat caps, but I prefer the older 8 panel mushroom top style. To me, they look more ole worldly, and were actually worn with kilts in the 19th century. Another reason for liking them is they sort of look like a tam with a visor. The style Rocky likes, reminds me of a horse jockey helmet, designed to be streamline, and I don't think it looks any better than a baseball cap that Mac likes to wear. Eric mentioned no one likes his hat, and I'm with them on that... but that's not so much about the hat, but the way he wears it. I hope I'm not being offensive, I'm just telling it like I see it. Eric looks 100% better with his short cropped beard.
The short answer is no. The truth of it, you can, but if you have to ask you probably don’t have the taste or build of it. And truth be told you shouldn’t wear a pipers Dirk if not a piper. The right Dirk for the right occasion, and that is where other combat knives fall in. For example I have three dirks, one for formal wear (in a military context), one for bush craft (worn at the neck), and one for living history, a fourth knife worn in the context of the Afghan Highlanders is neither a modern combat knife, nor is it Scottish, but being the traditional knife of the Pashtun is not out of place with the correct jacket and headwear, be it with kilt or trews it’s all about context of the fit. Want to wear the ww1-2 dagger, rock something tailored with the correct fit, don’t walk up in an acrylic and a polo. 2cent
Only way I'd respect someone one wearing a FSD is if they used one in ww2, or are a descendant of someone who used one in ww2, you're wearing it to honor your forebear who used it. if you're just wearing it too look cool you're an idiot but if your ancestor used one in combat? what better way to keep traditions alive than to honor your fathers?
Ironically, the Dirk has a lot more in common with the modern field knife than the Fairbairn-Sykes Though tbf to the FS, it was made for one purpose and one Only.
I really appreciate how y’all cater to everyone without bias. It’s evident in this video and in many of the items USA Kilts carries. Christians are represented with Celtic crosses and art from Book of Kells…Pagans are represented with Celtic/norse iconography and runic symbols. We notice and it’s yet another reason we buy so much from you.
Thank you for the kind words!
Piper specific weapon.
So a smaller hunting type knife with plain white bone scales wouldn't be too out of place instead of a sgian dubh?
Of course not. Especially since the "sgian dubh" is kind of a 19th century invention. Small knives have always existed, but, few of these things were "type cast" as they are today. "Knife chats with Tobias " and "fandabi dozi" also cover this.
Most people don't use dirks at a formal event. Sgian Dubh and call it good. Don't wear a sword either
I don't know why this channel has been suggested to me but as a Scot the dirk wouldn't normally be worn formally in Scotland/anywhere is because it would be illegal normally if you weren't in a military procession. I imagine this has filtered through to how people perceive it in the UK and internationally.
another topic I want to heard from this channel's POV ."kilt men in erotic entertanment media"
Oh! Well, we'll definitely look into it (in a PG way)
@ and safe for UA-cam.
Ooooh wait a fuckin minute...😂😂😂 white ppl can't braid their hair ..but someone of african descent can wear the very symbol of scotland ??? I'm done ..I give up I'm iffical done with the double standeered. Mindset that has become the norm in the last few years ... I'm just done ..and ppl can't figure out why I want to live in a cabin in tha woods...far far away...DONE .
It’s not a religious item, as long as you don’t make a mockery of it, wear whatever you want
well said!
I tend to use A1 instead of HP because they are very similar and the Great Value equivalent is half the price.
Scotland History Tours is a wonderful channel about Scottish history. He's black. He always wears a kilt. Because he's Scottish. Really great channel if anyone hasn't watched it. His love for his history, love for his country, plus he's quite funny! Lots of good information for anyone interested in Scottish history.

For context, ingame hes a black scottish cyclops and about half his skins have a tartan on them. Hes my favorite
I know USAKilts has the Appalachian Tartan, but an often overlooked event is the West Virginia (Coal) Mine Wars. It is from here the term "redneck" originated, so there ya go. You could incorporate colors from the Appalachian Tartan but add red as the primary color. Or even better, create a whole new color mixture with red (for the rednecks), black (for the coal), OD green for the US Army, Forest Green (for the hills of West Virginia), brown and denim blue which seemed to be a dominant mix in old=time miners' wear and perhaps white or yellow/gold to break up the darker colors. All those colors, by the way, are also found in the West Virginia State Flag.
I went to the Scottish games in Ventura recently. There were African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Asian Americans there all wearing Kilts. Nobody gave it a thought. We all just enjoyed the games and had fun. I don't think anyone cared.
Life's too short to wear pants everyday and to care what anyone else thinks 🤌🏼
exactly!
For folks not as into Scottish stuff as you guys a sporran is a men's purse worn on a belt over the crotch. There are lots of ways that that description can be addressed and be well made. Not cheaply made. There are other shapes than the 'D' or oval that can look good. If the object is only to bow to Scottish dress/culture make no changes. If the object to to love the kilt and accessories for their look, that can be done and expanded upon without insult to the Highlands. For casual wear I far prefer my Rob Roy to the day sporran Rocky normally wears. It's casual, comfortable, and holds more stuff easily. I'd NOT want to wear the Welsh day sporran as shown with the fur. A bit hard to keep clean with all the food I spill when eating. Just wouldn't look good after a spoon full of chili fell on it. I can easily imagine other cultures falling in love with traditional Highland wear but wanting to make it their own. Variation is tartan, or cloth for the kilt, other symbols on pins, sporrans, buttons, etc. David
well said, David!
In the photo of the dress ysgrepan, that looks like Ellis of Wales tartan! I have that one!
This is the type of programming that makes your channel so much of a joy to watch and share! THANK YOU!

Appreciate the honest review. I got this for around 200 bucks but I put it in the bunker for special occasions. I haven’t bought one since as they keep going up in price. I hope when I crack this open I’ll get some of the same notes.
