Another great lesson, thanks Hayes.
You’re welcome, glad you liked it!
I figured out how to do this on my own just by ear long ago through trial and error, but I never know any of the names of anything including the actual names of notes. I can figure it out if asked tho. You soon discover that names don't help a bit when you're improvising at a jam. For me, it's more about knowing sequences of positions on the fretboard, various shapes of left hand finger positions on the fretboard and what it will sound like. That determines how I improvise and it works pretty well. No tabs or music needed, just ears, eyes and fingers.
Thanks for sharing your personal experience, I can relate to it a lot. Personally, the names were a pretty helpful addition to the fingerboard positions when workshopping ideas before I’d take them to a jam, but I see your point.
@HayesGriffin you've done a good job with this lesson.👍
I couldnt put my finger on it before but now i can say that it seems to me that he is the Modern day Jimmy Martin
Both rebels for sure 🤘
This is really cool just beyond the basics stuff. From a practical standpoint, working out of chord shapes is probably the way I lean. When I'm hunting the melody of a song I'm just hearing, this is safe territory.
I’m with you Jim. I pretty much only use the scale approach if a line is moving up the neck. Glad you like the concept!
Great stuff as always!
Thanks!
No problem!
Now I will survive!
😆🤘🎸
Great video!
Thanks buddy
From Brazil 🇧🇷 ♥️, love this lesson, brother.
Muito obrigado meu amigo 🙏🏼
Such a great and honest review, Hayes! I am convinced now, I'm gonna buy this lekato tank g! Because of that, im gonna subscribe on you too! Bravo!❤
Super cool! You’re gonna have a ball with the Tank G. Thanks for the sub!
whats your pick of choice here? sounds great
Thank you! I was playing a Blue Chip TAD 50 here, but have moved to a 1.3 Darthtone ToneSlabs pick since.
Practice ...its the only way
Thanks Hayes
If you play a song with a 4 (C note for a song in G), you should be theoretically correct to play the C note in a solo -
Hayes, outstanding as usual!! This is a great way to kick off the New Year! I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series. HAPPY NEW YEAR
Glad you like it Jerry! Happy New Year!
Killer musicians 👍
Agreed!
I struggle with cross picking but find combining both styles of it (DDU and DUDU) for this tune easier than sticking to one picking pattern or the other. Is this normal?
Absolutely normal! It’s good to practice the patterns by themselves, but I always find myself mixing and matching when arranging or improvising with crosspicking.
@ awesome! Thank you for the reply!
I have their 5.8 ghz Wireless Guitar System (JW-06) and it works pretty well for the price. I don’t know that I’d trust it on the road but it’s perfect for home to plug into a practice amp.
Great to know! I’m very interested in that system.
Thanks so much for this, Hayes. Much appreciated!
You’re welcome! Keep tuning in every week, I’ve got about 6 more in this series
@HayesGriffin great! Looking forward to it!
Great stuff Hayes.thanks
You’re welcome Steve!
A passing tone is not bad!
Pyure gold, I say there Hayes, pyure gold! Now I'm going over my song list, and marking them 1, 3, or 5. So far, most are 5. Some, I've already worked out a nice kick off. Others, like Blueridge Cabin Home, have an iconic kick off that I try to honor. For many though, I could plug in a generic line, better than nothing. I already do some of these, but let others surprise me. Thanks Hayes
Glad you’re finding it useful Jim! You’re welcome
I needed this. Now I just need to figure out the targets for my favorite tunes. Thank you.
You’re welcome Lewis! Glad you finding it useful.
Billy is my Guitar Hero. Watch him on Nugs tonight!

I watched the whole contest that day and you did awesome. Mark is an incredible guitar player I have had him in my classes at Kaufmans Acoustic Kamp, he is good people.
Thanks a million Steve, means a lot!
Great lesson Hayes!!
What an Awesome sound!!
They're all good musicians and I especially like the girl and boy playing guitars and the Bass player along with the banjo and mandolin player. Those are the most talented ones in in the band.
Yours and Marcels content has really helped me improve not just my bluegrass chops but my general skill and theory understanding. Keep it up please!
That’s awesome Kyle! Thanks for the comment 🙏🏼
I have been teaching the blended pentatonic 8-tone scale for awhile now in blues lessons and now that I'm getting into bluegrass I'm really glad to see someone else utilizing it explicitly as a scale in its own right. Great stuff!
Awesome! I’d love to examine more of a blues approach to this concept on electric. Thanks for the comment!
@HayesGriffin I find the easiest thing to do (to maintain a bluesy sound which starts to fall apart as you get too harmonically dense for too long) is use the whole scale but switch between emphasizing (i.e. landing on) the major pentatonic with passing tones/embellishments from the whole scale. And vice versa. Since you have a jazz education I'm sure you've already noticed that this scale is also really close to the "lydian mode" of Barry Harris' minor six diminished scale. I am excited to see more of your work! Love your stuff with Marcel too!
Awesome job Awesome Awesome Awesome
Looks like we have the same Collings,
Amazing performance! I hope to see a lot more of these musicians in the future.
Killer !
Really nice I believe I seen the little girl at Steve Kaufmans Acoustic Kamp. Really good !
That was definitely Lilly Ann at Kaufman Kamp! She’s awesome
@ she is really something.
These guys blew my mind filming this first thing in the morning! We should go back and ask for the Cajun Filet...
HA! The only thing that could make up for a forgotten cajun filet is picking of this caliber 😆
Awesome sound! Greetings from Simpsonville SC
They’re great aren’t they? Thanks for the comment 😊🙏🏼
Fortunate to get to jam with these shredders in SC. Such a great group of musicians!
Jealous of you Brett! I only get to see these guys 1-2 times per year. Thanks for the comment and happy pickin!
Sounds so good, right in the pocket!
Agreed! Their time feel is 🎯
Ok now yur just showin off,, kidding,, great sounding guitar and fantastic pickin

Been waiting three months for this video. Thank you, Hayes, for doing this. All four of these youngsters are fine young people as wells as great young musicians. Jacob is a good guy also. 😁

The thing I noticed most was that I LOVED your tone.
Thank you!
Great interview!
Thanks Steven!
