Dani's plants & snackyard
United Kingdom
Приєднався 20 тра 2021
All about my (ever so slightly pampered) houseplants and little Urban Backyard Snackyard. With food prices soaring, I'm trying to cram as many fruits and veggies as I can into my small space.
I especially love growing fruits that we can't easily find in our local supermarkets here in England. It's such fun to try new and unusual flavours.
The dream would be to create a Food Forest, but my garden is only little, which is why I call it my Backyard Snackyard.

Citrus Winter Care: Bringing my Citrus Trees inside for a long Winter
Oh my snow ❄️
There is a stone wall close by that helps as well 🌱🥑🌱🌝👍
Definitely!! The weather is also turning warm again now - after a weekend storm. It's a bit topsy-turvy.
My dad’s planted avocado for a fee years now, I wonder if I’d get the fruits next year. It’s higher than the roof now.
@@maiamongkolpattanachai2301 It certainly sounds like yours should be big enough to fruit. How exciting! That is my ptoblem, though: they grow so tall, so I can't keep bringing them into the house every Winter. I hope these guys can eventually survive outside 🤞
Beautiful plant that also smells fresh. Too bad they are near impossible to grow in northern europe.
Yes, I wanted to buy a hardy one, as there are some promising grafted ones out there, but I haven't found one yet...meanwhile, I'm enjoying experimenting with these ones. They are so resilient. I really neglected them all Summer.
Your avocado seedlings look incredibly healthy, Dani! I hope they do well over the winter 🤞. I brought my avocado seedlings in the other day before the cold weather arrived. It's a good job I did as it got down to at least -4°C the other night. I might move a few of them back outside again while the weather is a little warmer this weekend as I feel they do quite enjoy the cooler outdoor conditions, as long as it's not freezing.
-4°C does seem way too cold for them, but I wonder how much they can take. I popped one of my extras back outside as an experiment, but the weather is turning here again to 14-15°C, even over night. Pretty much Summer weather🤣
No risk of root rot when there were so many in the pot. Once you separate them up probably wise to cut down on watering. They are reasonably cold tolerant but i suspect below -3c could cause serious damage 😁
Ah, so it was beneficial to have them all together like that. I never thought of it that way🙂 I didn't water them or anything all Summer, but of course we had plenty of rain😁 I was going to look up if they need citrus feed as I'm going to keep them on a similar very minimal watering schedule.
Your seedlings look great, Dani. Outdoor is definetly a great place to germinate and grow-on young seedlings. They're suprisingly hardy. I think the plant cells become acclimatised to the cold. Wishing you the best of luck with your new avo plants. 🌱👍🏽
@@MoebiusUK yes, I'm sure they adapt to their conditions, especially as they are so young. I'm going to leave one outside to see if he can survive all Winter 🤞🤞
I love experimenting in the garden❤
@@gardeningwithstaceyJamaica me too😁😁
They are looking great❤
@@gardeningwithstaceyJamaica thank you so much, Stacey. I'm so glad they survived my neglect😬😄
Frost here too. Cows are not too impressed 🐮
Cuteeeee ❤❤❤❤ It’s snowing a lot in Zurich also, very uncommon in Nov, but as expected from global boiling
@@maiamongkolpattanachai2301 yes, the global warming is making it colder sad wetter here. Tomorrow is going to be much warmer here, but it is meant to rain, flood and storm all weekend. A good excuse for a cosy home weekend I guess😄
Nice of you to feed them
@@VirginiaFruitGrower they are so sweet and so much more active in the cold - probably moving to stay warm😁
Well, how about that! You folk are getting snow already? Hmm... I have wondered about the AMOC system for some time. This is the kind of evidence I would rather NOT be seeing. 🤞, JJ
@@JJLom777 it really is so scary. Our Summer was so cold and wet this year as well. It seems the weather is all over the place; it's set to go back to 15°C at night tomorrow.
This is weird !!! You got first snow before us in 🇨🇦😳
That is crazy! It was a real treat for us, even though it was slushy and melted shortly after settling way too briefly. My boys managed to get a few snowball fights in at school, though 😁
@ first snow is always a treat and magical. I’m glad your boys got to enjoy it. 😆 God bless
It’s definitely been very chilly 🥶
Yes, we finally got a bit of snow today! Such a nice change from rain😁😁
Wow 🎉🎉🎉
It was such a pretty sight - like being in a snow globe 😄
Yummy 😋
I'm so happy that they are staying alive so far🤞🤞
I do not like Black Jewel. The fruit is small but the main issue is the taste which is like a mullberry but worse. I planted a row and gradually replace them. They spread like wildfire, if tips touch the ground the root fast. Imo best black rassperry is heban, not easy to find though
@@profeturulz8373 that's such a shame. I haven't seen any other black raspberry cultivars for sale here in the UK, but I'll keep an eye out for them. I saw that Heban is also listed as Black Polka and is classified as a purple raspberry. I used to grow purple ones in my last garden and they were so good!
@@backyardsnackyard Well you brought my moral down with hararasp rassberry so we are even.:D I had high hopes for this cause it won a contest 2 years ago, guess they don't care much about the actual fruit. Heban is purple but it's way blacker then Glen Coe and unlike Glen Coe and Black Jewel the fruiting period is way longer. But my Black Jewel has white stems, your are not that white so you may have a better cultivar? You'll see at harvest. Hope I don't get dissapointed in my Mojo berry I have high hopes for it
@profeturulz8373 ah yes, the hararasp were disappointing, but I'm still hoping they will be better next year. It was so cold here this year and sometimes fruit trees do better as they mature...I haven't found that to be the case with Raspberries, but these are different...I'll definitely keep an eye out for a Heban. They sound lovely and I love having a big rainbow of berries in my berry bowls😁😁
They still look beautiful even with frost on them 🥰 Here’s hot during the day time even it’s winter 😅
It's snowing now. We woke up excited...but there was nothing until the boys were safely in school - they were hoping for a snow day!😄😄
Are they cold hardy? I’m in zone 6 / Missouri.
@@BigBudde yes, but they really dislike cold, dry winds and frost. I cover mine with blankets when temperatures drop and, most importantly, keep then in a spot which is protected from freezing cold winds. They are supposed to be hardy down to -10°C.
Are they cold hardy? I’m in zone 6 / Missouri.
We had the first frost as well recently and yesterday we had the first snow ❄️
I love snow, especially as it is such a rare phenomenon here😁 We're getting some today. It's very slushy, but still pretty😁
Beautiful 🌿🌿🌿
@@everydaylifestyle9258 thank you 🙂🙂
Nice to see that the cutting took, always very satisfying. I had a lemon verbena last year that didn't make it through the winter. This spring I bought a new one, that was propagated locally in a polytunnel I think. It grew massively this year, next to the blueberry bushes, so it doesn't mind acidic soil. Because it is so much bigger now, I hope this plant will make it through the winter, with some straw around it perhaps. I also got a "mint verbena" (Aloysia polystachya) this year, also with a really nice smell!
They really are such a fragrant bunch of plants. I have heard so much about another Aloysia: Aloysia Virgata (sweet almond verbena); it's on the top of my Wish List, even though it's not edible. I do hope your Verbena survives the Winter. I am keeping a few other tender perennials outside this Winter, mainly due to lack of space in the house, but I think they'll be okay with a bit of protection on particularly cold nights, like the next few ones.
Beautiful trees, great song 🎵
Aw, thank you so much 🙂🙂
Beautiful shades 💛💚🧡🩷🤎❤️ Some trees here will lose their leaves soon and start to be more colourful now. I’m excited!
It is such a pretty time of year. I always find it a bit bitter-sweet, as it marks the end of gardening for a few months, but I'm sure we need a break as much as the garden does.
@ That’s true. Gardening is fun, but it’s a hard work sometimes. I prune 1 mulberry tree every 2 weeks now so I have some to eat and not a lot at the same time from now. Been super exhausted 😂 Sowing some seeds now also. When I fully recovered I’ll start cutting grass and weeds 😵💫💪
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Looks like the weather's brilliant there! 😊
Yes, it has been a very mild Autumn so far😄
Love the autumn colours on mine too. Hope your plants will fruit for you next season.
Thank you. I'm hoping for a hot Summer - I think that will really help give it that extra push to start flowering 🙂

Good morning from Finland 🌷🌿🌞🐝 beautiful sharing 🤗 Greetings Amanita 🍄
@@amanita1453 thank you so much!😁😁
They are really adorable 🥰
@@IshaPublicSchool we had so few of them this year. Usually they grow like yummy weeds. Hoping for more next year🤞🤞
I wonder how they could survive without food during long winter months. I must google a bit, quite interesting!❤❤❤
@@maiamongkolpattanachai2301 I think they hibernate and wake up hungry in Spring😁
@ Was reading a bit, most don’t hibernate, but eat honey. Some the queens hibernate. Very interesting 🥰🐝
@maiamongkolpattanachai2301 oh, of course. That would be why they store the honey. I'm sure I have heard that bumblebees hibernate though.
@ Right that one hibernates. It’s so fun to read about them. I visited a honey farm in Chiang Mai 2 years ago and bought lychee and longan honey, amazing!! Now I miss Scottish orange blossom honey 😂🧡
@maiamongkolpattanachai2301 that sounds so good! I miss Danish Heather Honey. It's amazing how you can taste the flowers.
Pretty new addition to the garden Dani
@@lyonheart84 thank you. I hope this one stays alive. It was so odd how the other one vanished.
Love the music choice for this one❤
@@CandysGarden thank you. It's such a happy sight to watch little pollinators enjoying themselves😁
We really struggle to control ours 😮 it is always trying to take over 😊 I am not a big fan of double flowers - bees struggle with them 😢
Yes, I've never heard of them just vanishing like this. Perhaps it just died over Winter. What a shame about the bees. I had no idea, but it's great to know so I know what to avoid in the future 😄
@backyardsnackyard Apparently there are too many confusing messages from the ultra violet pointers on all the extra petals, so they waste a lot of energy and can't find the nectar 😢 Bees see flowers in quite a different way from us! 😀
@philipwilkins that's crazy. It really is an amazing hidden world.
I bought the seeds and tried planting them here in winter, it didnt grow 😅
@@maiamongkolpattanachai2301 what a shame. Have you tried sowing Cosmos? I think they look quite similar and they seem to grow really well from seed.
@ Ah yeah there’re a lot here in Thailand. I wish we had water so I’d sow the seeds all over the hills on my farm. Only a dream 😂🙏
@maiamongkolpattanachai2301 yes, that is a beautiful dream for sure.
@ Maybe next rainy season I can make a smaller area of flower fields here. Lets see if I’d still be here or take Chompoo to Switzerland with me 🙏💪🐱
@maiamongkolpattanachai2301 they would be very easy to grow it Switzerland too. What a big decision to have to make though.
❤so sweet..lovely space

Very nice plants. Thanks for sharing 👍I like this theme🌿Good luck 🌻♥️
Thank you so much. It's such a blessing to have Citrus trees inside during the cold months, especially when they flower, filling the house with their perfume😁
@ Thanks for information,very interesting 👍🌿Have a good day ♥️
Where did you bought the seeds or plant?
I found the seeds online. The instructions were in Russian, which I can't read, but there were images too, and it was just like sowing and growing tomatoes. They are something like cousins in the plant world 😁
@backyardsnackyard okies. Yes, pepino dulce is in tomatoes and eggplant 🍆 family.
Wow, wonderful berries Dani The garden is so vibrant 😊
Thank you. I sowed the Fuchsias a few years ago, so these flowers and berries were a long time coming 😁😁
Looks very interesting 🧐 It is so mild at the moment 😮
Yes, most surprisingly so! We actually just had our coldest night yet, where the temperature dropped to 2°C, so I guess Winter is coming.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful thing 🌹 I'm so touched 😍
Thank you for watching. So lovely to hear from you.
Wow, Your backyard is still green! Different vibe than my backyard. All the leaves are gone, all the potted plants are wrapped, or tucked away inside. This weekend, Christmas decoration. 🎄
Yes, the weather certainly makes it feel less Christmassy here. We went to one of out favourite National Trust properties, which is famed for its Autumn Colour display in their amazing gardens, and there was barely any! Even the Hydrangeas were still in full bloom😃 I'm sure it will get cold soon enough, though😆
