RMS Lab Stam Audio SA-T69 (Helios Type 69 Replica) Mic Pre & EQ First Impressions Review
You probably didn’t need the palate cleanser between each mic sample. I wish you had included a finished vocal with EQ and effects as well. All of these mics will act a little differently when you add reverb, and some will take EQ much better than others. I thought the 67 and 47 sounded really nice, but with a little EQ and effects would have shown just how nice. Stam’s 87 always sounds good. The 800 sounded really nice until the instruments were added, then it lost something. Maybe it was lack of EQ and effects. That CV12 is always a surprise to people. It just kind of sounds done in a mix. I miss mine sometimes.
Thank you E&V and that’s the beauty of creativity in YT. Maybe I’ll think about doing a done mix in the future because I don’t find it fair for the mic to be processed but the rest not. The entire point of MY shootouts is the RAW Sound of the mic and in the raw mix because that’s what we will all start with. I’m glad the shootout gave you an idea of what you can and would do in the mixing process. I’ll definitely look into a done mix POV. Thank you again.
@@reddmusiclab I enjoyed the samples. We all have our own way of presenting this kind of thing. There isn't necessarily a wrong of right way, but I know what I want to hear when I'm searching for samples and or mic and thought I'd share my thoughts. Nice shootout.
Stam is starting making them
MK-2? Yes! It was a while ago. I believe the first batch is done and moving onto the next.
I miss your videos
I truly appreciate that RTMajor. No one said I was done but when I do come back, it’ll be bigger & better than ever! It’s just taking time on my end my friend and for that I am truly sorry.
Why i keep hearing 1 1/2 years to sell someone a product is pretty long wait everyone im alittle discouraged at this point.
Hey Asavagehand, I totally hear you. Fortunately for me, like the ol’ saying goes: I got more time than money. If you check out Stam Audio Users Page, an overwhelming number of customers end up saying: It was worth the wait! I feel the same way! But I have other gear to get me thru the wait. If you’re in the same situation, you will not be disappointed despite the wait. Hope this helps.
How does it sound the focusrite 220? I have one too and i have this mic on the way!!😎
Hey Daniel, like the name. I wonder why 🤔…. I can’t quite pinpoint the sound, it’s clean with a bit of highs roll-off saturation. I do however, like the compressor! Though I wish the knobs were stepped. EQ is cool but nothing out of the ordinary. Overall, great channel strip but I don’t think I would’ve been impressed had I spent $4K when new. What are your thoughts?

Just ordered this one. How do you like it over the original? Excited to get mines and put it to work
Stay tuned to find out.
where can you get this mic cable !??
I had to order mine from Golden Age through rad distribution
See if you can get it from Stam Audio. I believe Mics with Power Supplies have a “combination” and it has to match your mic. There’s also a company called REDCO, they can make custom multi-pin cables and they should be able to provide a better clarification. If they do, come back and let us know please. I wouldn’t mind upgrading the cable.
Aliexpress has chinese clone that literally sounds and looks exactly like a real u87ai for 600 bucks.
Looking forward to your review.
No it doesn't. It looks like it but it doesn't sound like it....
@ red seat I feel version 1 has more bottom end but the bottom end of mk2 is sharper and so are the upper mids, Stam have got closer to the sound with mk2 than they did with mk1. My recommendation is keep version mk2. I am sure you can hear in the full mix mk2 cuts through better as other people in the comments have said they are 100 correct.
Thank you for your observation Donor.
Looks cool but I'm sorry my patience is not that great. There's no reason you should have to wait a year and a half or something you purchased. I like audio scape because you order and they ship fast you cannot order what is not in stock. It seems like you pay for your item and with your money they make an item for someone else and ship it then someone else pays for theirs then they ship yours and the cycle keeps going. I hear nothing but good things about their products but us as customers should not have to go through that they even need to fix it or people need to stop buying from them.
I hear ya Hottraks but same could be said about expensive ProAudio gear. Us as customers should not have to pay over “x” amount of dollar. At the end of the day, us as customers have the choice to say yay or nay and many of us customers have said a resounding “yay” to Stam despite his timing. AudioScape is cool but they don’t have mics. Again, the beauty is that is ALL up to us the customers.
i 100% agree that it’s really not cool to have people waiting that long for a product they paid for. there really is no excuse. the mic is obviously worth all the hype and is amazing. but plain and simple there is no reason whatsoever it would take over a year to make a mic from scratch after you paid for the parts. that’s insane.
Test the API T12 please.
I don’t own that MicPre. If you can get more people to comment the same request, I’ll gladly purchase it and put it thru it’s paces. Thanks for your view.
The demo itself wasn't bad, but it did fall a little bit short. It would have been great if you went through all of the frequencies to hear how they sounded, and then chose the ones that sounded best. There are certain magic spots on a Helios EQ. On bass drum, the 60 Hz and 100 Hz frequencies give some serious musical punch. On the bass guitar, the same frequencies apply, as well as everything below 2 kHz. Electric guitars really shine at 2.8 kHz with some 10 kHz as well. Driving the preamps into saturation definitely adds some mojo on these things. I hope you eventually post the rock mix follow up you said you were going to do.
On it.
Reed, What is the exact name and model number of the tubes Stam uses in the power supply?
Hey @thisisliving, it’s the same tube as the mic which is from what I can decipher a Miniatron 6AU6WB, model FSE-8250R. Most likely made by Phillips. I’m going off the GearGutz video and puzzling it together. Hope that helps.
@reddmusiclab thanks for your great videos!!! Just wondering on your thoughts for the SA87i VS SA67 tube microphones for vocals and for vocals I am meaning voice-over recording? What are your thoughts on these two for this purpose.....I am considering buying one of these microphones just trying to work out which is best for my purpose. Thank-you.
Hi Fuchida! Man… that’s a very tough question. I’ve not played much with my SA-87i and receive my SA-67 not too long ago. Unfortunately, I’m still redesigning the studio and just can’t get around to testing fast enough. From what I’ve noticed so far from FB comments is that the 87i is a little dark but very even and smooth. Usually the 67 has a little more sweetening highs than the 87. IMO, for voice over, I’d probably go 87 because opening up highs can be done in the mix. Hopefully I’ll be posting videos soon so we can all be better informed. Take care.
@@reddmusiclab EXCELLENT ... I am looking forward to your videos, even a simple video with you talking into your SA67 and SA87i and alternating would be awesome....for spoken word its very easy to test and compare. In this instance it would be a voice over comparision test NOT a mic test as both are great and will suit different purposes and individual tastes. Love your enthusiasm Daniel in your videos....great work!!!
Thank you Fuchida. Only problem is that computer, interface and a bunch of other stuff is disconnected so even if wanted to do a quickey it’d be pretty impossible. Almost there though! I am in the last phase of the redesign. Thank you for the voiceover idea though. You’ve not been the only viewer who’s mentioned voiceover.
Super informative! Would it be possible to swap the stock tubes with the ones used by Sony in the C800g - as in, would it fit since it’s a slightly longer tube?
Don’t wanna tease because my teases tend to take 5 years+ to come into fruition but I that’s in the works. Stick around if you’d like to eventually find out 🙄😮💨.
@@reddmusiclab A yes or no answer would honestly be sufficient. :)
Sorry I won’t be able to confirm. I wanna say yes because I did a quick check but I didn’t take a pic to confirm. From what I observed, the regular tube is typical sized tube thus making it short for the tube housing so the Sony tube is a proper fit in the Stam mic.
@@reddmusiclabthanks! I’ve reached out to Joshua re this as well!
Best of luck!
I agreed to arrive and it’s incredible.🔥🔥
Enjoy!
Thank you for the videos, I sometimes watching them, but you're the pure example of the man creating content just for sharing emotions and having fun. I respect that.
Thank you for your kind words TakeItEasy. I wish I could create more content but there’s a format in which I’d like to do it to make a better learning process and more effective. That’s the goal in which I’m moving towards but because I’m a working man, a father and a family man, I just can’t devote the time other creators can. So, I’ll just take it step by step until we reach that first goal line and then move towards the next at a faster rate. I hope you can stick around.
@@reddmusiclab I understand that. Respect. Have a great day.
You too.
Do you think all mk2 use the sowter transformer? I wonder why Stam still hasn't fixed the website
Most likely. Probably a discrepancy when the webpage was updated for the mic.
Absolutely amazing ., i own the original sa800g and love it to see the growth is phenomenal i love the tube in the power supply of the new one and im a huge fan of sowter trannys i just purchased the stam sa87t tube now that thing is an adventure well done ,,!
Stick around for the shootouts.
I got one and absolutely love it!
Glad you do. Sure is a special one.
How long take him to ship u I wait two months and he said won’t be until next month 3 or half a year? Unfortunately this will be my first and last order from Stam.
Hey Godzillah, welcome to being a Stam customer. Unfortunately this is one of the downsides to being a Stam customer; sometimes, some products arrive quickly while taking advantage of the Pre-Order pricing. And sometimes, we encounter your situation. In my view, the wait has always been worthwhile and so has for many. But that’ll be up to you decide. I wish you all the best and when you do get your mic you too will find it worth the wait.
Wheres the shootout between each of these boxes?
Hey there LosFicos. My apologies for the wait. I finally got around to redesigning my studio but obviously is taking up a lot of time. I can’t even give you an estimate date at the moment. I can confirm that I still have the boxes and won’t get rid of them until I actually test them. I’m so sorry to let you down.
@@reddmusiclab hehe all good bro I brought the Radial one
Ha! Nice. That thing is built like a tank. You’ll be just fine. Always good to have a tool like that at your disposal.
I preorder the SA87i because it’s cheaper of the 2 and presale is $200off.
Nice! What do you think so far?
@@reddmusiclab it’s not ship until July I only check out videos now I talk to Josh and made a request for mine mics it will be tune for me.
@Godzillah Sounds pretty cool. If I may ask, what tuning(s) did you request?
@@reddmusiclab I ask for a darker sound.
im working on an album. i thought i had access to a 737 but i dont and im annoyed by that. i was considering getting a neve 1073 spx but im like the idea of this as well. does this work well on vocals? this would be a hip hop album(not autotune nor your typical hip hop projection but emphasizing tone). with the 1073 i was just going to run it into my twin into the cl1-b plugin and print that way. telefunken tf51 mic.
What’s up FTH! That’s the million dollar question. I have been curious about the 1073SPX myself but I’d like to compare that vs the classic and even 1073N, all from AMS Neve before giving an opinion. We have to start with the technologies these preamps are utilizing. 1073SPX is using SMD technology for its circuitry while staying true to its roots with the Transformers AND EQ Inductors. Mike-E is based more on chips while utilizing Transformers for I/P and O/P Gains. I’m afraid I don’t have enough experience to tell you which technology “sounds better” and the opinions out there are too vast for anyone to make a concrete determination. What it does come down to: Do you want to control dynamics/saturation (Mike-E) on the way into your Twin Interface or “Tone” (1073SPX)? It’s about $100 difference with SPX being more expensive. Personally, I like to control dynamics on the way in rather than EQ/Tone but again, that’s personal preference. I’ll leave some links below so you may do some research. Best of luck! www.soundonsound.com/reviews/neve-1073-spx www.electronicsforu.com/resources/differences-between-smd-smt-tht
@@reddmusiclab thanks for the reply my man. i have a 737 available to me atm. the 1073 was my top choice but i do agree with you, dynamics matters a ton because you do want to have the vocal controlled going in as well. just so many options and decisions. ill mull it over a bit while i work on this project. thanks again.
No Prob FTH, enjoy the 737 in your sessions. At least now you’ll get to control both dynamics and tone.
Nice demo and music
Thank you Audio Janitor.
daaaamn when you flock it in and out 28.35 …. after being fullt bypassed and then turned on.. those low mids kick/bass what ?!!
or more 28.20 forward
Haha! Yup, nice creamy and thick Compressor. A very nice trait by Neve. Glad Stam was able to replicate that trait. Looking forward to MK2.
so which sony c800g would u say is the closest?
Hey Lewis, sorry I’ve been MIA. Big changes are happening in my studio so it’s taken up a lot of my time. Build wise, SA-800G MK2 is as close to the real deal. Sound wise, I don’t know yet. Because I’ve been out of commission, I haven’t heard MK1 and MK2 back to back. Hopefully I’ll be posting a few videos in the next few weeks which will include a few comparisons featuring the SA-800MK2. So please bare with me as I get things done. Should be exciting. Thank you for hanging in there thus far though, truly appreciate it.
Hello, why aren't vishay capacitors ? Ir degrading quality to get more money ?
Hi Renato, I have no idea why Stam Audio would not use Vishay Caps in the MK-2 and it would all be unfounded speculation. Hopefully someone that knows about electronic circuitry can explain it to us.
Do a shootout between this and the bae 1073 🙏
That’s a tall order! BAEs aren’t exactly affordable. Maybe, the SA-1073EQ?
When it comes to darker mics like a u47, do you find them more flexible for compression and eq boosting and tweaking VS something like a u67 or 251? I wonder if boosting the highs of a u47 may be more desirable then an already brighter mic, and boosting a bright mic will only make it sound thinner ? Versus boosting a thicker mic, the thicker mic will still be thicker if boosted? I’m keep going back and forth with which mic for me . I can give you an example of what I’m going for . The vocal tone in the song “meant to live” by switchfoot. I can’t tell if that’s a u47 with a bit of a nasal/silibance boost or if it’s a 251 . That to me Is the perfect tone for a Rock song. If I had a few set up maybe I could analyze the frequencies of the voice . I think he used the same mic for the song “dare you to move” but that vocal processing is different but maybe that helps with figuring out the mic type . The chorus on that song sounds a But similar to the processing in meant to live, but the versus are much more “hard” and present , Unlike the versus in meant to live, which are present but still kinda soft/ more obscure in comparison . It seems like he has a nasal frequency boosted too in those songs a bit . Im trying to figure out which mic style Seems most likely used.
Hey there! Heythere, man! This is a packed question. First off, it’s been a while since I’ve listened to that Switchfoot album. From what I remember, CLA mixed that album but don’t know who recorded. I would say look into that. As to mic choice and recording chain. Welcome to the Trillion Dollar question that we’ve all been looking for. To start, in order to know which mic to choose, you need to know your mics intimately or at least know it’s characteristics well. Second, see how the performance and tone fit the recording. Lastly, no matter how great a mic one may have, if there’s no front end preamp and compression going into the recording, one will never be able to truly tell how great the mic is since the raw recording will be to dynamically uneven to make a good judgement. One more thing, if one is already looking for EQ on the way in, perhaps it’d be better off to check another mic instead. EQ should be a last resort option when recording. Best of luck and wishes.
How much did it cost to add tubes to the power supply?
It was a $100 upgrade.
Or downgrade considering tube replacement 😅
Jim Jacobsen
Hello everyone! A few days ago a viewer commented and stated that the SA-800Gmk2 heat sink was fake and that a business by the name of mfc network does mods to get C800G replicas closer to the real Sony Mic. So let’s explore. First, I looked around to find out what a heat sink truly is and what it does (Heatsink - what is a heatsink? how it works, and types available & en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_sink). This should make for great bed time reading because it goes a lot further than what recording/mixing engineers need to know. But if you’d like to know, have at it! In essence, heat sink is usually a metallic device designed to transfer heat. Based on this information, the SA-800Gmk2 fits that description. According to MFC Network, there’s suppose to be a liquid that helps in keeping the tube at optimal temp. This is where the challenge began. After researching heat sink liquids which did not yield results fit for the Sony C800G, I researched what Sony described for their heat sink device which is a “Peltier-based cooling system” which also did not yield results. Last I researched Sony C800G repair and stumbled on to this: www.audioservicemanuals.com/s/sony/sony-c/12626158-sony-c-800-g-service-manual. Yes! The original service manual to the Sony C800G. So, what does it take to make an actual C800G Replica? Let’s acknowledge first that the reason this mic is very expensive is because of its over-engineered aspirations to be an ultra low-noise high output tube microphone. That was probably true back when this mic was first manufactured. Not quite these days with better technology (look into the new Manley Microphone Power Supplies). Back to the subject at hand, to make a proper C800G Replica one needs: 1. A K-67 Type Capsule. Stam features a Braingasm K-67 Capsule. ☑️ 2. An Output Transformer. Stam Audio Features a Sowter Transformer. Not necessarily a replica of the Sony Transformer but no slouch of a transformer either. 3. A Huge Capacitor immediately following the Capsule. Stam Audio ☑️. 4. Tube! Here’s where there’s a discrepancy. Sony utilizes a Sony 6AU6 Tube that is approx 50mm in length which is larger than the 40mm 6AU6 Power Supply Tube. According to MFC Network, the larger tube has more gain/amplification. However, finding an off-brand 50mm 6AU6 Tube is pretty difficult so good luck. 5. The famous heat sink. Sony utilizes “ a unique Peltier-based cooling system”. This is a copper foil on top of the tube (not included in Stam Mic) and below the tube base, a semi-conductor to transfer heat to the heat sink (Stam Audio features this). 6. MFC Network makes a claim of a liquid coolant. For the life of me, I could not figure out what they meant so I am speculating they meant the thermal paste on the tube base (see this YT Video: ua-cam.com/video/hgqod9jQObo/v-deo.html). Stam Audio does not include this. So all in all, you’d be better off with a Stam Audio SA-800Gmk2 since the mic is built a lot closer to the Sony costing much less than Sony and a bit less than Golden Age. You would also be better off purchasing and doing most of the mods yourself except the capsule. This revelation only solidified my trust in Stam Audio and raises confidence that my SA-800Gmk2 is really not that far off from the original when it comes to build quality. Only time will tell how close Stam came to Sony so stay tuned and subscribe. All this to say, the Stam Audio SA-800Gmk2 Heat Sink is completely real, mechanical and operational. When are you going to release Audio demo
Hi Roderick. It’s gonna be a few weeks. Just finished recording the tracks for the SA-800 videos and not to spoil the surprise, another pair of mics just arrived so I’ll be recording the same type of videos for newly arrived mics and will directly compare them to the SA-87i. I’m a one family man production team and the studio sees me when family and home are taken care of first. So my apologies for the turtle’s pace but I hope in the end the videos will be worthwhile. Stay tuned.
@@reddmusiclabwhere is u?
My bad Stuff&Such. I’ve been redesigning my studio and it’s taken much longer than expected. I’m down to the last phase which is connecting everything back up but even that is proving to be a bit challenging. My apologies and thank you for checking in. I’m hoping to be done soon but I can’t put a timeline due to unforeseen challenges. The side of studio work no one really explains. 🤷♂️🤦♂️.
@@reddmusiclab excellent video. im anticipating your audio demo
Thank you dB. On it!
fire video I have the original SA-800 and I'm happy with it but I really want to try version 2 because it seems to be more accurate with the tube in the power supply and the heat sink along with the sowter transformer, and you are correct the transformer is what the sound characteristic is based on the tube delivers the saturation so it has to sound different than the original I have to get my hands on one of them Asap!
Thank you Domonick! Stay tune as the direct comparison should be posted in the next 2-3 weeks. Guess we will all find out if it’ll be worthwhile keeping the MK1 version. Stay tuned also because I may experiment with the tube in MK2. I found the repair diagram for the original Sony C800G and the mic tube is different than the power supply tubes. According to a Mod Tech, the bigger mic tube has more gain/amplification. So now I’m really curious as to what differences truly are.
jolly ol stamta Claus 🎅 🎶
LOL! Yyyyyyup!
I own both, I love the mk1 on drum rooms
Haha! Story of Stam Audio fans. Can’t quite let go of the classics.
How long does it take to get?
This particular microphone took me over a year to receive. At best, Stam Audio is inconsistent with delivery times. Some gear, is delivered in a few months as promised and some, take quite a while. However, once you receive it, a common phrase is consistently repeated: “It was worth the wait!” I realize it sounds corny but at least from my perspective, it’s true!
So if you needed six pieces of gear you're wait six years to receive it?
If you order one per year… I suppose so. Again, some products take a few months as promised and some take longer but the average is about 1 year.
Which Microphone do u think sound better between the 2?
Hi Robert, recording day will be Thursday or Friday of this week. You can follow me on FB and track the progress as I’ll be posting a few pics of the session.
@@reddmusiclab any update on the answer?
Put both 800’s to a test
Absolutely! Recording day will be Thursday or Friday of this week. Then the time to edit. Trying to get those videos out quickly! Stay tuned.
Which one u think sound better MK1or 2?
Don’t know yet and it’s hard to speculate because what’s really coming down to is a transformer difference and circuitry. Should be interesting and exciting.
