Collapsing Rolls In Grooves
Here's an approach to playing grooves where we substitute the backbeat for a "collapsing" roll.
I've done a whole video on collapsing rolls that you can watch here:

I've also written a pdf to accompany this video which you can download here:

who's your agent

I think it's important to remind students and those who want to break into the music scene, that the best music agent could be the very person they're learning from. I'm keen to hear of your own careers and what part your teacher played in getting into the music scene. Leave your comments below. Anyway, greetings from this beautiful village in the south of France called Sarlat. Daz
More Extended Paradiddle-diddles

So here's yet another approach to extending the paradiddle-diddle but this time by adding doubles. We get some great sounding odd-time patterns with the addition of an orchestration approach I haven't shared till now. There are a couple in this series. You can watch them here. Learn This Crazy Groove

Here's an odd sounding groove which is based on a nine note paradiddle and played across two bars of 4/4. The pattern I use comes from my previous video called Odd Groupings Using Two Paradiddles. Here's the link for you to check it out: ua-cam.com/video/70thKJl7EbM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=DarrynFarrugia There's a PDF that accompanies this lesson. Odd Groupings Using Two Paradiddles
Переглядів 3,6 тис.7 місяців тому
Here's a simple but effective concept for creating odd groupings using paradiddles. To create the odd groupings we will be using just two different paradiddles: The Single Paradiddle and The Paradiddle. Here are two videos I've made on Odd Time Paradiddles: Part One: ua-cam.com/video/-fSzHr3PfpI/v-deo.html&ab_channel=DarrynFarrugia Part Two: ua-cam.com/video/WTo-mIaAbuQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Da...

A Steve Gadd Inspired Idea

Here's an idea I stumbled across when I was practising some time ago. The sound of it reminded me of something I heard Steve Gadd play so I got to work to see how I could expand on this idea. Ceiling Cloud Comparison

Here's a video comparing the sound of my drums in my studio with and without the ceiling cloud. The ceiling cloud is a new addition to my studio and in case you haven't seen how I made it, you can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/ViNYeOliQqk/v-deo.html&ab_channel=DarrynFarrugia The overheads I chose are ribbon microphones with a figure of 8 pattern. In all the examples there is no EQ or comp...

How I Learn Music For A Gig
Переглядів 2,2 тис.11 місяців тому
A part of our job as musicians - and admittedly, a job I don't aways enjoy - is having to learn music for a gig. In this video I discuss my approaches for a couple of different scenarios that I often find myself in. At the end of the day we have to play it like we really know it (and love it!). I'm also keen to know what methods you use and what works for you, so feel free to leave comments in ...
Anti-Flamitory Exercises For Jazz Drummers
Переглядів 2,4 тис.11 місяців тому
As a follow-on from last week's video, this video looks at 'Anti-Flamitory" exercises related to jazz drumming. These exercises will not only tidy up any flams between the left hand and right foot, but can also be developed as a hip "comping" approach. If you missed last week's lesson on Anti-Flamitory Exercises, you can watch it by clicking on this link: ua-cam.com/video/_IqVxWow1lg/v-deo.html...
Anti-Flamitory Exercises
Переглядів 2 тис.Рік тому
I talk about this a lot. It's what I call "the weak relationship" and specifically - if you're a right handed/right footed drummer - the weak relationship is that between the left hand and right foot, especially when it comes to playing unisons between those two limbs. Here I present some simple (but difficult!) exercises to expose and remedy this issue. These are exercises I practise and pass ...
The Time I Got To Play With Trisha Yearwood

Here's another flashback to the 90s when I was the drummer in the house band on a live-to-air TV show. Here's a clip of us playing with Trisha Yearwood. That voice is off the charts.
Soloing: AAAB Phrases
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
In this video I discuss and demonstrate a way of phrasing in solos that has its origins in jazz but can also be applied to contemporary playing. Steve Gadd is a prime example of this approach. Repetition in solos is a great way to ensure musicality in your phrasing as it connects your brain to what is being played, rather than playing licks and patterns purely from muscle memory. Here's the lin...

Very well presented!
Did U buy this kit from Mike Johnson?
SONOR Muffler on the Floor Tom! Historic!
Well spotted
Please help me with "what goes on" and "act naturally".
Great stuff! Reminds me of a Stanton Moore video a few days ago. He seems to have a less mathematical approach to this, as in around 7:46 of this video ua-cam.com/video/xOtPlIuNrpM/v-deo.htmlsi=wOeK99ejvPBnnA-J
That being said I admire both ideas. And I just noticed Stanton’s way of doing this phrase in 5 keeps the right hand in 4/4; while Vinnie’s and yours allow emphasis on the flamed accented notes
Isn’t 10:06 like mouth of war. Great stuff!
Thanks for the great lesson! ❤
I love the sound of that drum very much...the snare sounds great...great lesson.....thanks...
Not a drummer just was listening to The Pantaloon by Twenty One Pilots and was curious how to air drum this lol
Wonderful lesson on the technique. I've been really struggling with keeping balance when playing the hihat and your lesson has helped me overcome the issue like a real piece of cake! Thanks a lot for your time and effort put into this lesson
Muy bueno Pero dura 90% hablando y toca poco... You very good but, Speaking so much... Jeje
Thank you for these great tips.
Absolutely lovely !!
I just tap them gently on the side of my head, the tone is very clear. I use it to match a pair for playing as I won’t have a set of scales at a gig. I’m not worried it being exact, just close enough so that one isn’t very high and other very low. Can normally find two sticks that are within about a semitone within a minute though so isn’t a hardship. I also give them a quick roll to make sure they’re straight as do get some bananas sometimes. This is all assuming I have time, if not I just grab two sticks, but I do notice the difference so prefer to pick them pre-gig if I can. If I was organised I would pair them and label them at home before, but I’m not. Some guys do weigh them and label them though, I’ve seen that. Or can try and keep them in pairs from the start but that would be too sensible!
You highlighting why the snare hit felt awkward was exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you!
Beautiful lesson, thanks can't wait to try it out!!
good tips
very interesting and useful. thank you
Do you think these fills can fit into Mitch Mitchell's drumming style, like in the song Hey Joe. Thanks for taking the time to upload videos.
Very inspiring 🙏🙏🙏
Excellent teacher.
VG. tops ...
Very classy !!
Love the baião
Hello, I only discovered this channel now. Such a pleasure to watch this video delivered in a calm and relaxed manner. Such a relief to not be addressed with "What's up"! I am 65 and I have been playing since age 14. I too love those little tasteful flourishes and touches that mark the player as a person to watch and listen to. A great drum sound too! Understatement and style is something I admire greatly in all musicianship and our case, in drumming. I look forward to exploring more of your videos, thank you, Michael
Well darn.
I’m feel so inspired and privileged to hear this lesson. Your “try to improvise” improvising was pure gold to my ears. Simply beautiful drumming in my opinion. Thank you Darryn! If even a smidge of your sound reaches my hands that will be a good day in my book. 🫡✅✌🏻
It's still one of my favourite solos. Used to be an honour to be your student DF!
Thank you Darryn! I’m so excited to try this idea. I must admit my rolls sometimes collapse by themselves, but not intentionally until now 🤭✌🏻
Virgil was no doubt aware of your impressive skills and musicality, not just your great attitude. What gig did u sit in on for Virgil, doing hey hey before you got the chair? I heard Virgil did a lot of the johnny young backing tracks too in the day.
beautifully executed Darryn, on ritenours captains journey, there’s some smooth extended collapsing rolls by gadd
wicked !
Awesome !
Super cool video ! Thanks DF 🎉
This is crazy I was down a rabbit hole reacquainting myself with some Novak vocabulary and stumbled upon this video the precise second I was wondering about a lick he played on some drum clinic audio of his I’ve had for years and there you are explaining it! Just subscribed Darryn I’ve been checking out your videos for a while now keep doing what you do!
So glad this came to you right when you wanted it. Thanks for the sub and for checking out my videos.
Linear grooves always sound better slowed down which would leave space for other musicians to create better than at faster tempos which is something I can't stand about speed metal

" Until next week, have a great week" 🔥 🗣
This was God sent. ❤ 🥁
Thanks for the helpful video! It was very insightful and I would like to know what drumsticks you use.
Thanks. The sticks I use are Zildjian "Dennis Chambers" model. I like glossy sticks!
kinda sweet!!!!!
"Here's my intro"?! wait what? where am I?
I don't care how you call this "lick" - it's just aSIXTUPLET (R L L R R L ) or vice versa! Steve Gadd uses this "lick" in various ways: hands on two sounds (HiHat/Snare, or divided between Snare/Bass-Drum)
This is definitely NOT a sextuplet. These are 32nd notes played as doubles RRLLRRLL etc. Also, I don't refer to this as a "lick" in this video.
G'day Darryn, Thanks so much for releasing all of your highly informative and useful content. Regarding Collapsing Rolls, these require alot of finesse when one plays a rimshot followed by a ghost note on the same hand. Are you able to comment on ways one can gain this type of control when the tempo gets brisk and whilst attempting to excecute double strokes in 32nd note form? Thanks again mate, Dom.
There are no shortcuts or hacks to getting this to sound good. It just takes some painstaking work and focus. I still think mine sucks a little. You will get it though. Just be patient and diligent.
Peter Blick was your teacher no?
Gaddaments has some nice examples.
Thank you
