i'm in rhino 7 and do you know why the sweep1 command will cause a distorted two profiles? the only way i can get it to work is to do the first point to the first profile, then the two profiles, then the last profile to the last point. and if i use roadlike it looks very crazy, freeform appears to be pretty good though. thanks!

Thanks for the question… The Sweep 1 command default settings have changed over the years and it can now sometimes give unexpected results. I just realized that the strange result is caused by the ‘direction' (or lack of) of the start point and the end point. In order to get around this you can first use the Point command to manually draw 2 points... (from the Front View) draw 1 at the start and 1 at the end of the spiral. If the points are drawn in the Front view you can use these points as selection profiles when running the <Sweep 1> command, rather than using the ‘Point’ option within, and you should get the desired result… I hope this helps. Press Enter. Now align all of the profiles, so that they are in the same position. Press Enter. In the pop up dialogue , use the ‘Roadlike’ option and if needed set the axis, by setting 2 points along the same axis of the spiral. And then finish the command by clicking ‘Sweep’.

@@gregsims5218 ahh! it seems like clicking the 'point' option was throwing me off. i didn't even think to select the point by itself. thanks a lot, Greg! Sincerely, Greg

this was indeed one of the best tutorials I have seen about this topic - so well communicated. I had the same issue with the distorted profile result (getting two bumps) - what worked for me was to just use the front view and disregard clicking the (point) option in the command line.. after selecting the spiral I clicked point, top profile, bottom profile, point, and at the end I took care of the orientation.. and that gave me the right result.. initially I tried to just use the start and end points of the sprial but that will produce an error in the bolean operation since it's not overlapping enough ( I guess ) .. thanks again to @gregsims5218 for this amazing tutorial !

nice video. But why don't you connect the handle as a polysurface to the polysurface of the cup. Then you can simply round the contact curve. This is much easier and faster.

Pretty good but would be improved with a description of what is being done and why. And maybe a side by side with another way to do the same thing. For example say "We will be drawing one surface of a spoon then "sort of" copy it, (with an "OFFSET" command), to make the other side. We will connect the two sides to make it a solid with the X Command" That would give more insight into the reason for the commands rather than just mimicking the keystrokes.

Thanks! This is very helpful. I tried following along exactly but then decided to make a more complicated shape for the profile of the handle (just a bit of a flattened ellipsoid, rather than a straight ellipse). I rebuilt the curve of the ellipse, adding some additional control points to adjust the shape. I made two similar flatter ellipses, did the Sweep 1 Rail command and made the handle. Followed along exactly as you have done, but now instead of that regular ellipse with a single edge, it interprets the edges of my handle and the hole in the body as segments, and it won't do the blend surfaces function correctly. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks!

You have to select the handle then write : "-hide" (don't forget the dash) and enter. For show the handle it's the other way you select and write "-show". I don't know the keyboard shortcut sorry

    • @gregsims5218

The command has changed slightly in recent versions of Rhino 3D, 6 & 7. You can use <Blend Curve> or from the drop down menu; Curve>Blend Curves> Adjustable Curve Blend and then play with the option to get the desired curve... an Arc Blend will create an arced curve between the segments. Thanks.
