The Boss Battles: BOSS SE-70 vs BOSS SE-50: Chapter 1: SE-50

Audio demo of the mighty boss se-50! A really interesting vintage multi effects unit from boss, oriented for guitar but also other instruments. It has a really warm sound (maybe warmer/with more character than the se-70?) and a lot of nice sounding algorithms (especially the reverbs, choruses and pitch!) here you can find part 2 with the se-70 ua-cam.com/video/wTd7Wnn81L0/v-deo.html

Audio demo of the mighty boss se-70! An evolution of the early SE-50 more oriented towards the guitar, it presents update converters, an analog distortion circuit, analog pitch detection circuits and a "better" interface (for the time) Here's part two with the boss se-50 ua-cam.com/video/Jx6yu8gOSgE/v-deo.html

    Very good and really helpful comparison. I'm torn between these two units for all the same feature differences you highlighted. It's good to know all this to make an informed decision. I'm leaning toward the Flow since I don't really need it for recording; and I like its routing, EQ, compression and FX functions. But having all the functions accessible and the stereo monitoring like the Zoom has would be really nice.

    I just ordererd a Neve 88m, wich has the capability of using external hardware via inserts. I think this is the perfect match not only because of its form factor, but for its amazing sound as a bus or even mastering compressor. Nothing to be with plugins. This sounds just real and works on every single sound source. Thank you so much especially for the last take using it as a bus compresor. It's just a game-changer working-class hero of a compressor!!!

    i saw this being used in an Italio disco mix and after some research just ordered one from ebay...this has such a retro sound i love it...will use it in full stereo with my Roland Juno-6 and Korg Prophecy (just like the Prodigy which had 6 of the SE-70s) edit: subbed!

    I’m using zoom l8 in tandem with r12 for my band backing track, recorder and band iem. Since all the sound were already produced from source all I need were very clean and true to the source sound. My only gripe were. I need more output for them iem. I use a headphones amp as a workaround but we’ll it’s more ideal to have more then abc

    This is undoubtedly a great compressor for the price, but how does it sound compared to high end plugins? Softube, arturia, etc.

    • @righteousone8454
      @righteousone8454 Рік тому

      This one boosts low end and about 200hz or so, improving presence, that's in my experience what I got out of it. Different flavors for different purposes. Nothing substitutes another thing

      This is much better than any plugin if you tweak it correctly. It's difficult to make it sound bad.

    I almost sold it a while back, when I needed money, glad I didn't. It's not a "clean" compressor by any means, it colors your audio, it sounds good, but it's not "clean" The whole intent of RNLA was to color the sound according to FMR Audio, so yeah

    • @Fernandoorejudo
      @Fernandoorejudo 6 місяців тому

      Clean is not exactly good. This "color" are indeed analog harmonics that make the perceived sound louder at lower volumes and in small speakers such as a cell phone ones. In other words... it's magic.

  • @StanleyCarlduPont

    Great real user review. You’re the first person to point out clearly that the L8 mix ABC is a mono jack when used with an external speaker. Thank you. It’s also worth a mention that the same applies when sending a stereo signal [say, from computer headphone] as line inputs to channels 1-6. We use Soundcraft UI16, Zoom L8, RodecasterPro and Behringer UMC404HD in different broadcast/livestream setups and will add the Flow 8 for desktop use. 👍

I just got mine a couple of weeks ago and I’m using it on gigs now and I love the sound quality and a small form factor. I put it right on top of my keyboard saved me from bringing another stand or something to put my mixer on it’s all right in front of me when I play and I love having all the controls right in front of me I don’t even need the app game changer for me.

    Do they both have great reverb? I could care less about distortion or overdrive from a multi effects unit like this, reverb and delay is all I care about but mostly reverb.

    • @theaudiogeekguy2588
      @theaudiogeekguy2588 2 роки тому

      They have great boss style reverb especially the 70. But for reverb lexicon boxes are my favourites (I have the pcm70, pcm81, and lxp-1)

  • @mudsh4rk

    • @theaudiogeekguy2588

      You can just crank the gain. Jokes apart I'm using mine mostly on the send return of my gap preamp (that is unbalanced) when tracking.

  • @thetokyorake

    Thank you for this review. Very good. I have the the Zoom L-8, but am not comfortable using it live without EQ on the mains and monitors. Also the monitor outputs don't work with TRS-XLR. I have some other problems, too. It's good for practice, though. As for the Flow 8, can you let me know if it's possible to adjust the level of FX to the monitor mixes? Or is it one level for FX for all sends? Thank you!

    • @eekamoose
      @eekamoose 2 роки тому

      The L8's headphones/monitor outputs do work with TRS-to-XLR adapter cables, but because you are going from a stereo jack to a mono XLR connector you need to have the correct pinout and you need to bear in mind that the signal at the XLR connector will be unbalanced. This means that it will be weaker than the signal you normally get at a balanced XLR connector. In a stereo jack to unbalanced mono XLR cable you need to connect: - Tip (stereo left hot) and Ring (stereo right hot) of stereo jack to pin 2 of XLR connector. - Sleeve (common cold / ground / shield) of stereo jack to pins 1 and 3 of XLR connector (i.e. solder a bridge across pins 1 and 3 and solder the conductor from the stereo jack sleeve to this bridge or to pin 1 or to pin 3).

    The SE-50 is a lot cheaper... for a reason I think. The SE-70 has a great sound!

    • @theaudiogeekguy2588
      @theaudiogeekguy2588 2 роки тому

      I think the 50 is a lot undervalued the sound is actually more "vintage" and is more difficult to reproduce with plugins. Also the pitch shifter is really cool for enhancing things.

      Actually sorry I forgot. On the manual says that when you reset you can select the "guitar" presets or the "generic" preset. By default i think it comes with the guitar ones. I used the "generic" as they are most similar to the se50 presets and also because I'm using mostly those. Btw I can make a part 3 with the guitar preset if there's interests
