I Crocheted A Huge GRANNY SQUARE Blanket
#crochet #crochettutorial #grannysquare #crochetblanket
I crocheted an oversized granny square blanket and it took over a month to make this blanket. Learning how to crochet the granny stitch and pushing myself to make this entire blanket really helped me improve my crochet skills, and I know this gorgeous neutral tone granny square blanket will make the perfect wedding gift for a fall wedding. I filmed every process of creating this blanket, so you can watch the full crochet tutorial to learn how to make your own oversized granny square blanket.
I crocheted this blanket using the granny stitch crochet stitch to crochet 49 granny squares in 7 different colors of yarn, so 7 granny squares for each color of yarn. I used 4 shades of brown yarn, 2 shades of grey yarn, and a ball of cream colored yarn for this project. All of the yarn I used came from Walmart, but I purchased $60 mixed between Red Heart yarn, and the Mainstays Walmart brand of yarn to crochet this blanket. I was very impressed with the Walmart yarn and have no regrets mixing it with the Red Heart yarn to source materials for this blanket.
Before starting this blanket, I had never made a granny square before, so I had to learn how to make a granny square while making this blanket. Since I don't know how to crochet or read crochet patterns, I had to reverse-engineer a granny square from pictures I found online. So if my directions are unclear, that's because I don't know how to give a proper crochet tutorial. Each of my granny squares is crocheted with a single color of yarn and 10 rounds of stitching to create a very simple and elegant yet striking granny square.
I joined all 49 of my granny squares together with an extended granny stitch. That was the only part of the project I looked up a tutorial for, but was ultimately able to crochet the whole blanket together. It took about 125 hours and just over one month of work to finish this crochet blanket, and that was after crocheting almost every single day (and yes, my hands hurt after that much crocheting). The granny squares came together perfectly, and the finished look of this blanket is so worth all the effort.
Since I laid out all the granny squares in a patchwork fashion and the joining stitches reminded me of a quilt, I added a very thin brown border to resemble quilt binding. Crocheting the border was the worst part of making this project because I had to redo the border 3 times to get it to look nice, but also to squeeze out enough yarn that I didn't have to buy more.
As a last finishing touch, I embroidered a tag with the date of the wedding I will be going to so the couple I'm gifting it to will always remember their anniversary. (And the tag covered up my skipped stitches, so I don't have to worry about being a perfectionist.)
Simply put, I spent a ton of effort making this oversized granny square blanket, and all of the crocheting was worth it.

    I watched the whole video! Besides learning about crocheting, I thought your calculations about Etsy were excellent. Clearly less labor intensive projects would be more profitable. I also appreciate that you demonstrate how challenging it is to complete such a project. Your hard work paid off beautifully. Kujo also acted out his role perfectly!

    Very pretty! But why do you roll the skeins into balls first?

    • @StudioCE
      @StudioCE 8 днів тому

      Thank you! Rolling the skeins into balls makes it so I can deal with all the knots and tangles first, then when I'm crocheting (or knitting) I don't have to worry about running into knots and having them ruin my work or be frustrating to deal with. One of the brown yarns was extremely difficult to unravel from the skein and knotted really horribly, so I'm really glad I wound it into a ball first. There's a point in the video where I showed the cream yarn all spread out because it didn't unravel properly once I got to the center. A few of the yarns were fine, but most of them had some sort of knots or tangles that would've disrupted my work, and it's a lot easier to feed a ball of yarn through a knot than a whole entire blanket.

      @@StudioCE It did take awhile. It was lots of fun though. I hope you decide to make more items.🎉 As far as pricing and selling projects, most people keep it small for selling. Like things you could make in an hour or so. Hats, scarves, cute squishy toys that kind of thing. As far as crochet goes, ask me any questions you have. I would like to start a dialogue with you. Maybe share info. I have a skirt that I'm trying to fix for my daughter so she could wear it and I can't sew to save my life. Maybe you could give me some ideas about how to fix that.😊 Anyway I hope to hear from you. Sorry this is so late. I was prepping for Hurricanes,and hunkering down. Just got power back. And yes I'm one of the old (56) ladies in Florida on a fixed income. That had me laughing so hard.

      Lots and lots of practice 😆 I've been sewing my whole life and try to learn new techniques when I can. I read a lot of sewing books, blogs, and watch UA-cam videos for info and inspo I'm entirely self-taught, and like to learn about different techniques for making clothes fit better. I have always had a very hard time finding ready-to-wear that fits well, and have the same issues with commercial patterns too. I do a lot of clothes cloning with pieces that fit well, but I think it's easiest to draft patterns on a dress form, alternations too I just feel better wearing tailored, stylish clothes, so I make learning how to achieve that a priority for myself

      You're welcome. I love exchanging sewing and crafting knowledge! I watch a lot of sewing content I like to watch Bernadette Banner for learning historical sewing techniques, but the Closet Historian, Sewstine, and Morgan Donner all have very good techniques too. I like Well-Loved and Carly B for fun upcycling inspo, and Jenna Phipps for crochet (back when she did crochet). The Stitchery is a wealth of knowledge and I love her deep-dives into understanding fabric and techniques. Engineering knits is a great channel for knitting too. I sometimes watch Rachel Macksey for inspo. And I really like watching Mia Maples who sometimes does sewing content but also breaks down the quality of ready-to-wear brands As far as blogs go, I like Buried Diamond for sewing, Jo's Country Junction and Bonnie Hunter for quilting, and Pintangle for crazy quilting. I have to share some information I wish I had known when I was your age. Working on the floor is very damaging to your back and can do irreversible damage to your sciatic nerve, especially for top-heavy ladies. I suffer horribly with pain now I am in my fifties. I was very annoyed when I found out that if I had been working on a table and not on the floor for most of my life I wouldn't be in pain now. I hope you take this as the kindness it is and know I am trying to help you in the further.

      I understand what you are saying, and don't take this as anything other than kindness. Unfortunately I have health problems and injuries that become aggravated when I use tables for projects (either sitting or standing). I have found the floor to be the most comfortable place to work, but I have seen the effects it can have on your back myself as well. I try to limit my back pain with good posture, stretching, and low-impact exercises But I've found the best way to limit back pain while working on the floor is to bend at the hips rather than the waist and to keep your back straight, like when you do yoga and Pilates. This helps protect your spine from long-term damage and releases tension that builds up in your hips when sitting for long periods. Coupling this with taking breaks to stretch reduces the most amount of pain for me Alas, I have yet to figure out a way to reduce neck and shoulder pain while ironing 😮‍💨 I haven't talked a

    Can this be done to the inner thighs

    • @StudioCE
      @StudioCE 3 місяці тому

      Yes. This can be done to the inner or outer thigh, or both. The only time you might have a problem with either is if you run into a felled or flat felled seam.

    Your explanation and presentation is so clear. Thank you!! Is it possible to get this to work for a 1/4 circle skirt as well?

    • @StudioCE
      @StudioCE 4 місяці тому

      Yes, but with altering the hem instead of the waist. I saw this question last night, but had to think it over before answering because my brain was too tired 😆 Let's say your desired front length is 18" and your back length is 19" Find the center front of your 1/4 circle (the fold line if you fold it in half) and mark that with your front length (18"). Then mark the seam line (edges) with your back length (19"). It would be helpful to mark the quarter points too (18.5") to help guide you in redrawing the curve for the hemline. This will essentially flatten the hemline curve (Or if you want a full stomach adjustment, this would curve it even more)

      @@StudioCE Thank you for taking the time to respond! I was trying to figure it out in my head too but was struggling as well, haha. But yes you nailed it. I need to make an adjustment for a skirt so it sits below a full belly but then comes up to cover the booty fully… ends up being a 4” difference between front and back

    Can i do this when shortening an already existing skirt?

    • @StudioCE
      @StudioCE 5 місяців тому

      Yes! You can draft the pattern the way you want it to end up, then overlay the waistbands, and trim the hem to fit your new hem. As long as your existing skirt is longer all the way around, that is totally possible When you're drafting the new pattern, you can probably get away with tracing the existing skirt's waistband to save yourself calculating it out

    I'm happy you didn't actually make it in one day and overly stress yourself (except for waking up early 😅), make silly mistakes, or skip important things like ironing. The need for fast sewing seems to create issues in the final garment 😂

    • @StudioCE
      @StudioCE 5 місяців тому

      I totally agree! It's better not to cut corners (literally and figuratively) when sewing. If it won't wear well, it's not worth putting your effort in to make a garment
