I'm posting this performance as this is, as far as I know, the only time Charlene landed a triple lutz in competition though slightly two-footed (but I haven't seen all of the Grand Prix's indeed). Of course, she misses the double axel... Charlene always had amazing skating skills and flow but she was always damned on the jumps, exc. maybe for her amazing 1993 Worlds FP performance.

Tthis performance is not as good as the ones at NHK and especially at the Olympics. She lands a superb salchow and flip, two great double axels (there is no second triple sachow attempt at the beginning of the season but a first double axel instead) and a very late triple toe. She doubles out the flutz. The fall on the loop is somehow surprising considering the height and speed that she got. Sh...

The first time Karen presented her Swan Lake FP (it got her the bronze medal here) that she would only get to skate at NHK (7th) and at Nationals (3d, not making the Olympic/world team and therefore quitting "amateur" skating). This performance is fair, though not as good as the Nationals' one, as she only lands a flip, a salchow, a toe, a double axel and an over-rotated flip. In an interview j...

This Chinese woman landed 7 triples in the LP throughout the season, except at OG and at Worlds (pity!). I think she was poorly marked every time, even though she is indeed not using the CoP to her advantage and her free skate would have scored higher under the old system. Her triples are beautiful, I love the triple loop triple salchow sequence, and the long double axel. Her music is beautiful...

    Oddly enough. Maria Butyrskaya would return to Helsinki Finland 6 years later for the 1999 World Figure Skating Championships. In that return she would become one of the oldest world figure skating champions at 26. She won that at the Hartwall Arena which wasn't built yet. That arena opened in April 1997.

      I disagree, plus dance choreo is supposed to be aesthetic. It's very contemporary and it features a lot of moves that are being used today under the IJS.

      The presentation marks are extremely low. The lack of quality jumping technique didn't help this insufferable choreography. The ending was so anti-climactic. I would never have chosen this screechy music. If it were a professional or exhibition program, I don't think I'd have such a problem with it. Even as a pro program though, I don't think Joanne is the right skater to pull it off.

    I love so much this program, I consider she was far more excited and musical with jazzier music and I thought her move with Zueva and Stong was genius because of the choreography, composition, and musicality are there and it helped her highlight her strengths and I thought it was her best short program and my fav move was the spiral 2A and the twizzle exit was genius as well. But as Robinson, she was the most consistent Canadian skater but probably wasn't going very high in the world rankings and I always thought she was at times undermarked.

  • @grantgoffin4774

    Although some of her jumps are really impressive not sure how a 5.9 for technical merit is justified with no triple lutz, no triple loop, and 3 of her 5 triples triple toes (she didn't break the rules as one was a toe wally but still). That particular judge btw had her 2nd over baiul, and she had numerous high ordinals even though she finished 6th. The Europeans was probably the toughest competition that year, including the Olympics, and way tougher than the weakened worlds where Szewcenko won the bronze skating no better than she did here.

      Having a triple-triple combination helps, especially with hers being known for the second jump being bigger than the first. Also very good spins, edges and ice coverage, which was one of her many known qualities. Krisztina Czako of Hungary.

    I bet in practice she skated this like a dream, but in competition, injury troubled, lack of confidence in the jumps, its all very stilted, even her rotation on the triple flip seems slow, it's tentative and putting a triple toe straight after was just a mistake, she wasn't a skater that could do triples that close together.

    I have watched her skate since her senior debut in 1988-89, and I consider this the best overall Karen Preston performance. The packaging is impressive, and the music, choreography and even the costume all helped conceal her weaknesses--heavy and labored stroking, heaving landings on her jumps as well as telegraphing. The 2A exit, for instance, is genius. The Zueva/Stong team did a wonderful job, polishing Karen's skating.

    • @skatingcritic1
      @skatingcritic1 3 роки тому

      I agree, her best programme and I can't understand why she normally went for dull classical music as this jazzier number suited her far more and was much more entertaining to watch. The only thing missing was one of her beautiful inside-edge spirals (FI or BI) in the spiral sequence.

  • @nondescriptnyc

    I appreciate the risk Joanne and her team took in going for this avant- grade program (very much like what we saw from Angela Greenhow in the 1980s), but the old scoring system didn’t reward complexity and creativity in concrete ways at all. I think she probably felt too busy and too rushed throughout this program, preventing her from focusing on her elements-so I can see why she went back to her old, more traditional program.

    Karen should have been sent to worlds over Susan. Susan going to the Olympics was fine but after her poor Olympic showing she should have been dropped from the World team for Karen. Karen would have won the bronze ahead of Szewcenko clearly at Worlds.

    • @wj3781
      @wj3781 4 роки тому

      I think that your ‘What if’ statement is really meaningless. Cuz Karen couldn’t have been a medal contender in 1994. Heading to that worlds, Bonaly, Chen and Sato were heavy favorites for podium with Chouinard and Markova being spoiler. Surprisingly, Szewczenko and Kielmann were just regarded as long-shots for medal as you can see their low marks in SP with clean skates. That is, Szewczenko was suuuuper lucky to win a medal there with Chen withdrawing after QF round, Chouinard and Markova skating badly and Kielmann falling her last 2A. There was no place for Karen at 94 Worlds. Rather Czako was more probable for winning a bronze there than Karen.

    It is amazing to think Josee, Susan, and Karen all landed 6 triples (even if all 6 of Karen's werent clean). Amazing when you look at the following years especialy 95-99 the abysmal level Canadian women were producing. Susan won her lone Canadian title with only 2 triples, a much poorer skater than she made the Olympic team with her, and which would have had her nowhere near making the team vs the likes of Josee and Karen skating well here. At the 95 and 96 Canadians Susan couldnt even beat a 3 triple Netti Kim and a 3 triple Robinson with only 1 triple of her own in 95 and 4 triples but mainly just triple toes and I think 4 falls (and botching the short program already) in 96. Susan badly fell off after showing promise in 94, and Karen, Josse, Tanya Bingert, Lisa Sargeant all retired. I wonder if some of those might have been too quick to retire, especialy poor Tanja who had still yet to make a Canadian and Olympic team at the time of so much depth and could have made a bunc hin the years following. Oh and Josee's pathetic return in 96 where landing only 1 triple she lost Canadians to baby Robinson, and didnt go to worlds.

    • @sbe79
      @sbe79 7 років тому

      Karen *should* have continued into 1995. I can understand her bitterness here, but if she had learned how to clean-up her landings even slightly, she could have soldiered on and won in 1995. Hindsight is 20/20 and in 2017 I can't even find a single video of Netty Kim who won 1995. No Canadian short, no Canadian long. Weird, a year prior -- you could see everyone's programs. No video of her showing at World's... Fuck! Not even a photo! Who the hell is Netty Kim?!? Almost as if she never was...

  • @russianskatingfan

  • @russianskatingfan

    Some say she is just jumps but that layback is very fast and with a strong position, and great use of the arms during it.

  • @russianskatingfan
    @russianskatingfan 8 років тому

    Why was she not placed over Markov who put both hands down on the triple lutz and nearly fell in 3rd atleast. Maybe 2nd over Preston who had a slight touch down the free foot on her triple flip combo. I am guessing it is because she was deducted for the weak spiral sequence.

    • @timothyhh
      @timothyhh 8 років тому

      Hardly anyone did a good spiral sequence back then, was a total throwaway element and the judges must not have cared either because it seemed like no one ever got called on it. Czako's only looks slightly worse than the norm at the time, but still plenty better than a lot of others (see: Surya Bonaly).

    • @russianskatingfan
      @russianskatingfan 8 років тому

      Timothy Horning Bonaly just did a few leg kicks forward and backwards for spirals in her short. It is embarassing how bad the spirals were then. Someone like Karen Preston did much better spirals than most (even if mediocre by todays standards) and got absolutely no credit in the scores for it, so obviously as you said judges simply didnt care.

  • @russianskatingfan
    @russianskatingfan 8 років тому

    Those marks are way too low even with the double axel mistake. I believe the step out of the double axel was .4 back then. The touch down of the free foot on the triple lutz was .2. So I would give her a 5.1 for elements and 5.6 for presentation. The other elements were excellent. Terrible judging.
