Ozeki Hoshoryu Yusho January 2025, 12-3, Yokozuna Promotion, All Bouts
Will I really be able to call him Yokozuna Hoshoryu?? Ahh, I for one think he absolutely displays all the qualities required of the highest rank, but I'm also a sucker for tradition! That being said it would be an honor to see him in the white belt, that first Dohyo-iri will be truly something to behold.
While clearly the losses to Maegashira are frustrating, Hoshoryu built his way back up to a dominant final few days, culminating with an exciting 3 man playoff in which he trounced both competitors. The reverse on Takanosho, the throw of Onosato, and the playing on Takerufuji's lacking lower half, simply lifting him up, just wonderful stuff. Much more to see from Hoshoryu, Yokozuna or not! Cheers and enjoy!

73rd Yokozuna Terunofuji, his Final Dohyo-iri
Переглядів 1,7 тис.14 днів тому
After completing his long stated goal of 10 yusho in July of 2024, 73rd Yokozuna Terunofuji will retire after nearly four years at the top rank. Pulling out of the January 2025 basho at 2-2, his request to retire was accepted on the 17th of the same month. Sigh. Thank you, Terunofuji. The ideal Yokozuna.

Ahhh Hoshoryu, while few are upset Kotozakura scooped the cup, I think the sumo community- myself included- would have oh so loved to see it in the hands of Hoshoryu again. I blame Abi, hahaha! I think this is the best we've ever seen him- a couple of close calls or not. He seems to have some counter in mind for every opponent, and pulls out some killshot finishing move over and over again. He'...

Am I the only one who still calls him Kotonowaka half the time?? Either way, the Ozeki makes both namesakes proud with his first yusho after several years of close attempts. While his size might be deceiving, Kotozakura comes with impressive adaptability, maneuvering his wide frame to mirror his opponent while utilizing whatever method necessary to take them down. A year ago I would've said he'...

The man is back, and in fantastic form. Maegashira 7 Wakatakakage takes no pause in his exciting comeback from last year’s injury with yet another high scoring basho. I feel totally confident he’s got it in him to regain his Sekiwake rank, perhaps this time right beside his brother! WTK is a stellar tactician. Watching his bouts back, you can really tell how much strategizing it seems he’s done...

Sekiwake Onosato secures his 2nd Yusho with totally unmatched dominance. Attaining Ozeki after just 5 basho in the top division, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that he will become the 74th Yokozuna. Watching him once per day definitely shows off his skills, but watching all his bouts in succession exemplifies just how far ahead of the competition he really is. I honestly think Hoshoryu and ...

The wildman, the berserker, absolutely brimming with sumo spirit. New Komusubi Hiradoumi may have faced a bit of doubt on this steady climb to Sanyaku, but he deftly sweeps away the competition with some of the speediest, most dynamic sumo in Makuuchi. He caught my attention way back in 2022 with a stunning Juryo performance, and has delivered some eye catching matches every tournament since. T...

Slowly but ever steadily, the top division is being reshaped into the reliable status-quo it likely should've been several basho ago. The youth are taking their places towards the top, and the hardy old dogs and lucky hangers-on are finally taking their leave. While perhaps good for the sport, its a painful process to watch. The likes of Takakeisho and Kirishima fall back, those of Onosato and ...

The King. It has been an honor, Yokozuna, to watch you fulfill your goal, and confirm your place alongside the greats. Dai Yokozuna indeed. Just as in January, I was shocked by just how much doubt the sumo community still has about it’s leading man, and once again, when in the shape he needs, he will win, flatly he will win. And so continues the Terunofuji Era! Before the start of the basho, the sumo community seemed to have an alarming amount of doubt in the return of their Yokozuna, turning to Yokozuna-to-be Kirishima and now Ozeki Kotonowaka as obvious choices for the Yusho...and I will admit, the loss to Wakamotoharu on Day 2 caused even me to worry, but wow, every bit of doubt was unfounded. Coming into September as kadoban, there were worries recent knee injuries might have ended Keisho’s days of dominance, and while 11-4 is a low score for a Yusho, he won it in exactly the style he is famed for. Juryo was a toss up until the very end this time around, with both old division staples and relative newcomers making their marks. As one Japanese's opinion, the Japan Sumo Association rushed to get Hoyoshoryu to be a Yokozuna in order to avoid absence of Yokozuna. We will see if Hoyoshoryu has what it takes to be a true Yokozuna at the Osaka tournament in March. If Hoyoshoryu has the power of Yokozuna, he will win the tournament, and if not, he will lose many times.

Nope, his ceremony is this Wednesday. Here's an article if you need more proof. 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐲𝐮 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐤𝐨𝐳𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐨𝐟𝐮𝐣𝐢’𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐘𝐨𝐤𝐨𝐳𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦 - 𝐇𝐚𝐤𝐤𝐚𝐤𝐮 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐭 Ozeki Hoshoryu clinched victory in a three-way playoff to secure his second championship, the first since the 2023 Nagoya Basho, and confirmed his promotion to Yokozuna for the next tournament. In the final regulation match, he defeated Ozeki Kotozakura, leading to a championship playoff with Oho and Kinbozan, where he won consecutive bouts in the three-way playoff. Hoshoryu’s performance was highly regarded, and as if to mark the occasion, lone Yokozuna Terunofuji announced his retirement. Kotozakura’s pursuit of Yokozuna promotion ended early in the tournament, leaving a sense of crisis that the position might remain vacant for the first time in 32 years, since Akebono’s promotion in the 1993 New Year Basho. This sense of urgency shifted into anticipation for the next Yokozuna, creating a tailwind for Hoshoryu. However, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. From Day 8, Hoshoryu suffered consecutive losses to rank-and-file wrestlers, and by Day 9, he already had three losses. At that point, the momentum for his promotion had almost vanished. Even his final record of 12 wins might seem slightly underwhelming. The Judging Committee, which requested an extraordinary board meeting with the Hakkaku Chairman, expressed mixed opinions on his promotion. Ultimately, it was Hoshoryu himself who overturned these doubts. Although there are past cases where candidates like Kitanofuji and Takanohana were denied promotion despite similar circumstances, Hakkaku Chairman stated, “I was promoted to Yokozuna with 12 or 13 wins and a championship. (In Hoshoryu’s case) there were moments of danger during his throwing techniques, but he endured. His mental strength stood out.” The Chairman praised not only his sumo content but also his growth in shin-gi-tai (心技体 mind, technique, and body), particularly in the aspect of “spirit.”

You can see very clearly how versatile Hoshoryu is. He's great at combining nage skills with yori, a consummate belt technician. He also can push and use the nodo-wa, usually at the start of a bout. He doesn't use hikiotoshi much, nor hatakikomi. He's physically stronger now than he was a few years ago.

@OneLovedKid he's going to be under immense pressure. No more 8 win tourneys, that's unacceptable. He must always be in contention now.

@ well of course, he is the Yokozuna. We can only hope for the best. This is the first Yokozuna appointment since I started watching sumo, so I am very excited for this.

@OneLovedKid I came in right around Teru's promotion and Hakuho's retirement but had been on the fence looking in a bit here and there for a few years.

@АлександрИванов-о8ф6й The Yokozuna Deliberation Committee got together immediately following Hoshoryus win and announced that they were going to discuss it. History has shown that when they let the public know immediately following a basho, it's guaranteed they are promoting the winner. When the interviewer announced the YDC had got together, the crowd erupted and Hosh had a gigantic smile on his face.

I'm begging you to hold off on uploading these, or change the title, until a bit after the tournament ends. It's really easy to get spoiled by the video popping up in the youtube feed.

You have my sincere apologies, really. I do understand that people are more and more reliant on the youtube NHK channel for content, especially with Natto being harder than ever to find these days, but with their upload schedule being up to 3 days late, I feel I'd be being unreliable if I didn't upload the championship vid within a smaller timeframe than that. I must admit, I do make a committed effort to avoid all social media that might display sumo spoilers until I've seen the day's matches, while I do understand that may be easier for some than others.

The NHK app (free) uploads sooner than the NHK youtube channel, I recommend it.
