    Did you cone it extra because of less wedging? I get worried about air bubbles and over-wedge when I attempt to make marbled clay and it just becomes a lighter brown

    • @mountainmudpottery
      @mountainmudpottery Рік тому

      Definitely over wedging when combining different colors makes it muddy. Extra coning is not required, just enough so it’s well centered. Air bubble’s really aren’t a big deal. Just poke them with a pin tool and keep going!

    It's so great that you're back, Lory. I searched for you numerous times over the past few months; then guessed that you had probably retired to a beautiful tropical island, and had given-up on pottery. LOL. I decided to search for you once more, and I see that you have returned. I look forward to your future videos; and I enjoyed this one tremendously. I'm planning to get back on the pottery wheel soon. I FINALLY painted and had my first few pieces glaze-fired about two weeks ago, and I can't complain - for a beginner. The last time that I was on the wheel, [over a year ago] I was still struggling with 'pulling-up the walls', though you created a great learning video for me, that I very much appreciate. I will watch that video again, and I'm hoping to perfect that skill, soon; because I love doing ceramics. August 3, 2023.

    I do marbling and wanted to ask how you handle or attached handle without smearing the clay? Or cleaning without a sponge??? Thanks!!

    • @mountainmudpottery
      @mountainmudpottery Рік тому

      It’s challenging for sure. After attaching and cleaning up gently with a sponge I use a small stiff rib to bring back as much of the marbling as possible. Sometimes I dip the top half in a color and leave the bottom raw, then it doesn’t matter about the smudge on the handle. It’s a beautiful contrast!

    Thanks so very, very much, Lory, for creating a video addressing my beginner-potter-issues. Your instructions are very clear and detailed. I have just realized that part of my issue, I think, is that I hand-sew/quilt, embroider and hand-applique with my left hand. I crochet, knit and write with my right hand. While on the pottery wheel, I use my hands interchangeably while performing the same intended task. After carefully watching your video; I realize that I must train a particular hand to perform, [as you have demonstrated] instead of switching hands while creating. I ,also, realize that the indentions, centering, collaring and compressing are VERY important. I wish that I already owned my own pottery wheel so that I could practice while viewing your video. I plan to watch your video several more times, prior to my next practice, within 2-4 days. I will remember to post a follow-up on here letting you know how it went. Hopefully, my wobbles, uneven thickness and breakage issues will be Gone With The Wind. LOL. Again, thanks so much. You are a very good instructress. 11-16-21.

      @mountainmudpottery 3 роки тому

      I’m really happy that you found my video useful. I look forward to hearing how it goes for you! I thought of another reason that you’re having trouble with clay breaking off. If the clay is too firm/hard it would make you have to use too much pressure while pulling up. Soft clay may help you have more success.

    Very good tutorial. That tip on how to secure the clay to the bat, by fingering around the base, prior to beginning the throwing, is great. I will try that in my next pottery class. I have learned to cone up and down; but is experiencing great issues with "pulling up". The clay becomes wobbly and usually breaks, and the sides are unevenly thick.

    • @mountainmudpottery
      @mountainmudpottery 3 роки тому

      Thanks so much for the comments. With pulling up the wall, without seeing what you are doing, I’d say would probably be uneven pressure. That would also address the reason the clay breaks. Try to collar the piece in after every pull until the final shaping. The uneven wall thickness is a result of either not being centered to start with or it was opened off center. I hope this helps. Watch for upcoming video where I will demonstrate what I mean

    • @prettycountrygirl2
      @prettycountrygirl2 3 роки тому

      @@mountainmudpottery Thanks so much for your response and advice. Uneven pressure, I suspect, is one of the issues for sure. I've tried to be mindful of this - but, so far, I haven't mastered this particular skill. "Throwing" looks so easy on the videos that I've watched; however, for me, as a beginner, [about five practices now] I've learned that handling the clay is much more difficult than it seems. I will remember to "collar" more often; and I will cone up and down a few more times than I usually do. I look forward to your upcoming video and demonstration of the proper procedure for my dilemma.
