I think it’s very important that the viewer sees finger placement. I’ve watched a lot of videos where that’s not the case and it’s sometimes hard to figure out. Also a lot don’t explain the process
Thanks so very, very much, Lory, for creating a video addressing my beginner-potter-issues. Your instructions are very clear and detailed. I have just realized that part of my issue, I think, is that I hand-sew/quilt, embroider and hand-applique with my left hand. I crochet, knit and write with my right hand. While on the pottery wheel, I use my hands interchangeably while performing the same intended task. After carefully watching your video; I realize that I must train a particular hand to perform, [as you have demonstrated] instead of switching hands while creating. I ,also, realize that the indentions, centering, collaring and compressing are VERY important. I wish that I already owned my own pottery wheel so that I could practice while viewing your video. I plan to watch your video several more times, prior to my next practice, within 2-4 days. I will remember to post a follow-up on here letting you know how it went. Hopefully, my wobbles, uneven thickness and breakage issues will be Gone With The Wind. LOL. Again, thanks so much. You are a very good instructress. 11-16-21.
I’m really happy that you found my video useful. I look forward to hearing how it goes for you! I thought of another reason that you’re having trouble with clay breaking off. If the clay is too firm/hard it would make you have to use too much pressure while pulling up. Soft clay may help you have more success.
This lady makes sure viewers can clearly see her fingers and how to place them for different stages
