  • @popvoid

    I can't disagree with any of this. I'd probably add that Empress is good for two things: gin and tonics, and the Aviation. It works well with the tonic mater in a G&T and it looks pretty.. It's probably the best for an Aviation because you can keep the amount of Creme de Violette in the drink down (which, lets face it, tastes like soap) but still get the correct color. I tried using it in a martini and was not impressed. Cheers!

    I agree that substitutes you proposed are better whisky in taste, but they are also usually in different price range. You don't even have to drink whisky to guess that bottle for 25 euro is better than bottle for 15 euro. Moreover some whisky like Dewars of Glenlivet Founders are made as "mixers", so I don't see any logic to buy something more expensive and complex for "party". Thanks for info about Laphroaig Select, I will avoid it, generally Laphroaig in my opinion is very overrated peated whisky, Caol Ila and Ardbeg are my fav.

    You certainly know your Scotch. My own personal favourite is Macallan 12 year old, unfortunately due to the poor value of the Canadian dollar, and the outrageous taxes we pay on alcohol, the price has risen to outrageous levels making it unaffordable. $132.53 CDN. Maybe Trump’s idea of Canada becoming the 51 st state is not such a bad idea.

    Hello Robert, just found your channel! Love how you go into so much detail in your explanations. I learned a lot about Fortaleza and El Tesoro that i didnt before. I did have a few confusions. In regards to Arette, they should have 2 lineups, their Artesanal/Suave lineup which are the round bottles and their Wells/mixer variety, the square bottles. The prices for the round bottles are significantly more than the prices you listed, and you also showed both varieties without distinction. I work at a liquor store and Arette is one of our all time favorite products, but the price you listed for the Arette while showing the Artesenal/Suave variety is significantly less than even our cost on the bottle. Was there a reason why you showed them as interchangeable in the video? Nonetheless thanks for the great video!

    Robert, I've never watched your UA-cam channel until today when this video showed up on my Google feed. The content seemed well-researched and well-presented with some exceptions. Of course, we all know that reviews such as this are based on personal preference which differs from one individual to another and are meant to serve as a general guide rather than a definitive reference. I've been a whisk(e)y enthusiast with an emphasis on single malt scotch for roughly the past 15 years, and, if there's one thing I can't ignore, it's mispronouncing the names of scotch distilleries and expressions. With all due respect, if your subject is scotch whisky, please take advantage of the multitude of resources available online and learn the proper pronunciations for brands such as GlenDronach, Auchentoshan, Glen Moray, and Glencadam. (NOTE: I would highly suggest using Scottish sources rather than American sources.) I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's offensive to scotch drinkers, but, at the very least, it does cause one's nose to wrinkle.

    • @schoolofwineandspirits

    I have a horrible story to share. A gentleman who lived in a building I manage, had a collection of Scotch like you never seen. He asked me if I wanted some, because he had stopped drinking, and he gave me a box of very old scotches, that he must not have liked, because they were all opened and only one or two drinks were missing from them. Friend of mine was having a birth day, he's Dutch, and everyone was drinking out of orange Solo cups because of that. And I brought one of these bottles over with me, because it was mostly full, and it was very old. The bottle was Longrow, 16-Year-Old single malt, from 1974, from Campbelltown. I'm a bourbon drinker, not a scotch drinker, so I never delved into the different regions or flavor profiles of Scotch before. But I really enjoyed it, no one else did. Then someone looked up the bottle, and it felt somewhat sacrilegious to have consumed it from plastic Solo cups. What Scotches have that similar flavor, that you could recommend?

    • @schoolofwineandspirits
      @schoolofwineandspirits 3 дні тому

      That is a complex comparison to make. The oxidation can alter the flavor considerably for something that is old. I am afraid I am going to have to punt. Jump in our exclusive online education platform! Join using the link in the video description! Cheers!

    Wonder what certifications this guys has, if any? Credibility check please. Patron is first tequila brand to be certified additive free by CRT. While palates differ from one person to another, the systematic approach to tasting would suggest that this is an outstanding spirit, that is a true representation within its category.

    • @schoolofwineandspirits
      @schoolofwineandspirits 5 днів тому

      Patron has quite a few offerings these days and are owned by a company that is known for adjusting to the times. Perhaps I am wrong, although it occurs to me that if they were the first certified additive-free, it may have been a long time. @DavidSanchez-q8j 5 днів тому

      @schoolofwineandspirits My fellow in WSET 3 spirits award; let's discuss Patron as a brand first. It was awarded that certification within the last 12 months. Something the CRT had never done before. It sources its agave plants from fields up in the highlands with only the highest concentrations of inulin. They use brick ovens, and cook agave for 79hrs. For the core line, they use a combination of half roller mill and half tahona as the method of crushing and sugar extraction. Among other things, tahona preserves minerality of agave, while roller mill helps to reduce wasted sugars. Oh, and they also turn the agave plant waste - bagasse - into fertilizer that they gift to locals. They also take the waste of other nearby tequila distileries that cannot convert their own waste to fertilizer. This is a no cost service to their competition, and they do it as a comitment to the community they are in as well as the environment. Fermentation takes place in open air with a proprietary yeast. Distillation is carried out in small copper pot stills. I will digress here as we're talking about Silver. But clearly a very socially responsible company. As for your assessment, I did not even bother to read your tasting notes. By including this brand in a Tequilas to Avoid video, the assumption you are making is that it is not a good quality tequila. In remembering that at WSET we evaluate the quality of a spirit as a representation of the expressiveness of its category; this spirit is a true representation of the tequila category. Perhaps not outstanding, but very good at minimum. In summary, this brand should not be in your video.

    Gee, big surprise the more expensive brand was better. Who would have thought that? I'll take Pinch or Dimple as it is also know for $30 a bottle over all of the $50 plus brands. No doubt there is something at $200 or more which might be better, but then I would have to reduce my drinking to once a month.

    All the bottles you recommended cost double the price of the ones you said not to buy, so it is a classic case of you get what you pay for, no surprises there. And the bottle of Aberfeldy 12 you posted is actually the Aberfeldy 21 year old....which is probably the better tasting bottle of the two.....

    Everyone has their own palette and preferences, i don't drink Dewars, I would not even use it for mixing and cocktails, but I disagree with most of the rest. Many of these are just fine and are at price points for new whisky fans and scotch drinkers that make them standards in many starter collections. To each their own....as Rex and Daniel at whiskey vault and whiskey tribe channels say- drink what you like the way you like it! Cheers!

    I stopped 7 minutes in with a baffled expression on my face. Why would you compare Laphroaig Select to Ardbeg 10 when Laphroaig has a 10 Yr offering? Also, you mispronounced Glendronach.

      But how does Laphroaig Quarter Cask compare to the Ardbeg 10?

    • @darrylgaston7009
      @darrylgaston7009 6 днів тому

      @@darkoanton5 I still have some Laphroaig "Select", "Four Oak" and Quarter cask so the Quarter cask is 48% and the other two are 40% so that maybe why I enjoyed the quarter cask more and feel like it hold its own with Ardbeg 10. I have to do a little comparison tonight as I'm off for 16 days! :) but I currently out of Ardbeg 10 so I'll compare the Laphroaig's...quick edit the quarter cask is pretty good and better then I remembered it being and it is not just because of the higher proof, but the quarter cask that it was made in that sits it apart..

    • @schoolofwineandspirits
      @schoolofwineandspirits 5 днів тому

      @@darkoanton5 Laphroaig Quarter Cask is more intense, with medicinal peat and a strong oak influence, and is rich in spice. Ardbeg 10 is a more balanced scotch with bold peat, sweet with citrus notes. The Quarter Cask is a bolder wood-forward whisky, while Ardbeg is better for sipping or pairing with food.
