This was extremely enjoyable and entertaining to watch and listen to! By Crom! You have gotten this perfectly. This is one of my absolute favorite Conan stories. The Cybrarian does a magnificent job with the audiobook of same! Thank you so much for drawing the analogy of our modern times as well as the frontier times of the tale as well as our country’s history. Such a fine story to see and hear and read and reflect upon.
One of the very best Soundtracks ever from Basil Poledouris
Can't wait for you to do 'Hour of The Dragon' next!
Conan fighting a native American?
Am I the only one who thought the creatures in this tale were Lovecraft's nightgaunts?

What is it with you and so many feminist types having such a problem with the “damsel in distress”. It triggers such a reaction in people and I can only conclude that the reason for that is that it makes people uncomfortable that women are the fairer sex. What gives the Hyborian Age such gravitas is that it feels real. What is realistic about a woman going around and beating up men? When do you see that in reality? In my 34 years of life, I’ve seen it one time, and only in a video. The truth is that without all of our modern advances, women would fall back into the place that we see them in the Hyborian age. Which is to say, requiring the chivalry and respect of men; otherwise they would be helpless at the hands of savage brutes of men. The damsel in distress “stereotype” is a stereotype because it is a result of biological reality. Either come to grips with it or don’t; but don’t criticize writers such as Howard for using it….because he clearly isn’t in denial about the two sexes. That’s not his problem, it’s yours.
Great video as usual…but whoever did the audiobook for this story really failed in my opinion. His timing, his voice, his cadence, etc., are just not fit for a Conan story.
A. I don’t mind all of the cliches/tropes. In fact I actually quite enjoy them. I don’t need each of Howard’s stories to reinvent the wheel. He uses the tropes with great talent. And the story is fantastic. B. I do agree that the weakest part of the story is the ending; Conan simply throwing his sword and killing this great villain was anticlimactic. Did Howard run out of space? Or was there an issue that the wizard had been shown to be so powerful, that he needed to devise a way for Conan to believable win? The other weak part of the story (these are small complaints btw) was the visualization of the setting for the battle; the Pass of Shem. I didn’t really understand the description for the area and therefore couldn’t visualize the battle as well as I would have liked. C. The intro, an actual god (Mitra) making an appearance, the chemistry/will they won’t they between Conan and Yasmela, and as usual, the sorcery….we’re my favorite parts of this story. I love Robert E Howard’s writing.
Belit wasn’t really anything special to me after just reading the story. And to be honest, this particular story wasn’t my favorite. But your explanation/retrospective on how you viewed her sold me on why she is such a special character in the Conan canon. With that being said, I’m not really all that desperate to have some powerful female character assert herself onto Conan’s path. I’m jaded by modern Hollywood’s incessant need to use the girl boss trope. I’m sure if modern Hollywood made a Conan film right now, they would choose some variation of this story or at least use the character of Belit and make her better than Conan in every way. However, if I separate my own cynicism about modern entertainment and instead appraise the character as she is, I will admit that she is really great. And Conan’s relationship with her is decidedly unique and special. Like unstoppable forces meeting unmoveable objects and then somehow avoiding catastrophe….for a while anyway.
Your Conan videos are amazing…not sure why you stopped. Probably not enough of a following I guess? But I await more Conan content eagerly. I listen to your retrospectives after reading each story. PS: It is utterly outrageous to characterize Howard as some sort of fan fiction writer riding the coat tails of Lovecraft. And when I say “outrageous” I mean it. It’s absurd. Conan’s journey through the subterranean pits of Tsotha-Lanti are superbly written and are indeed horrifying. In my opinion, quite a bit better than Lovecraft but that’s just my personal opinion. Whatever the case, it is not a matter of opinion that Howard stood apart as a singular talent and with or without Lovecraft, would have captured our imaginations. That’s just a fact. It’s like saying that George Lucas doesn’t deserve credit for Star Wars because he drew inspiration from Japanese films and Westerns.
Love your videos man. You weave so much good stuff into them; excerpts, music, comics/images, letters from publishers, quotes, and your own very insightful notes. Oh…and your very fun readings haha, can’t forget that. Anyhow, I just read this story for the first time and some goober on Goodreads rated the story 3/5 and mediocre. To me, this story is exceptional and so much fun. The only problem I can find with the story is the one that the publisher noted which is that in the beginning, I felt lost and as if I was being pelted with too many names and other information that wasn’t easily digested.
Very insightful stuff. Just a few short pages and it really does spark the imagination and makes us ask important ethical questions. I for one am probably in the minority but I think Ymir’s daughter had it coming. She is wicked and finally the tables were turned on her wickedness. But two wrongs don’t make a right and especially when it deals with that word that rhymes with grape. I just bought all of the Del Rey Conan books and am so glad that none of it has been edited by a “sensitivity reader”.
😃👍
😃 WOW - thanks for creating this phenomenal presentation (verbal and graphic) and providing the fascinating overview at the end!👍
I just finished the novel the other night. this was a really good story.
Never a better Conan as the 1982 version and never a better King Arthur as the 1981 version.
WTF is going on with that caption in 1:12:50? You would NEVER split the word "more" between two lines if you run out of space in the margin. You can only split up multisyllable words like that (and even then you can only split it between the syllables).
Oh you’re a millennial. Conan so scary.
This was awesome
Is that the voice of robert from InDeepGeek?
I appreciate this.
A Witch Shall be Born is a good story.
Well, the illustrator didnt do well where it says, khosatral had become again the thing that had crawled up from the abyss milleniums gone. Where there was suppose to be a head, there was no head at all. And your narrative didnt stick with the story. You were putting in your own narrative.
Barry Smith was the Best
In modern war, they do not just rape the enemies women, they also rape their allies women if they have the opportunity. "U.S. servicemen committed around 4,500 rapes in France between June 1944 and the end of the war in May 1945." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_during_the_liberation_of_France#:~:text=U.S.%20soldiers%20committed%20rape%20against,the%20war%20in%20May%201945. That event occurred AFTER this Conan story was written.

"Beyond the Black.. River" as Conan strikes down a black guy💀

The young Balthus sounds a lot like Mako. 😉
Really enjoyed this. Of course, the probably intentional juxtaposition of the quotation from the book about Dejah Thoris' "girlish figure" with the typical modern gigantomastian depiction from Dynamite Comics' adaptation caused me to burst out laughing. Of course, that was probably inevitable given the dearth of alternative depictions. I hope you eventually find time to return and review Gods of Mars and Warlord (they're really one long story). Well done.
Hey what music did you use for entire video?
I love the differences between Conan stories and I love the tropes too! ⚔️😊
Great great work. Thank you.
There are some details you completely missed looking at this from exclusively an american perspective, though addmitingly anlot ofnit is related to how the history of the continent will go after conan's age is over. The picts are going to be the ones who end the hyborean age, as they unite under one banner, and after transitioning to the iron age, they will swarm over the west, exterminate the Aquilonians and the numedians, and all in all bring utter ruin to the people of the west. This is very much inspired by what happened to western rome, as it was conquered and subjugated by northern barbarians who came from the frontiers. As such, a lot of the subtext of this story isnt just about the morality of the aquilonians, but the very real fact that there is an existential threat on their borders that they flat out arent taking seriously. And because they will at the end of the day fail to conquer the Pictlands, their entire civilization will end, just as happened to western rome, who failed to bring the german tribes into the fold of civilation, either as subjects, or as developing allies, and so were swept away by the invading hordes who formed new kingdoms. That is what the ending talk is about. Barbarism WILL thriumph, because the Aquilonians didnt take the picts seriously when they were still in a position to do so, and so will pay the ultimate price for this underestimation. The romans had centuries to conquer Germania, but they never did, just like the aquilonians had all the time in the world, but never gave it a real effort, and so will be conquered by the people they so looked down upon.
One aspect here that i think you missed looking at it from exclusively an american perspective, rather than a historical one is that the people enslaved were not completely innocent victims. They attacked the nation who enslaved them attempting to destroy and conquer it and subsequently lost, and paid the price by being enslaved. Then they eventually destroyed that cicilization from within, which tells us that slavery destroys everyone it touches. So i guess the lesson to take here is kill everyone XD In all seriousness i do like this. It shows how howards world is far more real, and brutally honest than most in these regards. He refuses to just portray the people enslaved as always honest and good, because thats not how the real world is. The romans were once invaded by a people called the teutonics, who brought their entire civilaztion along on their warpath to conquer lands from rome. They lost, and their entire people were enslaved as a result. Honestly i think they were in fact the main inspiration for this entire backstory, given howard would have been well familiar with them given his love for history and their prominent retelling in the tales of rome.
two thigns i want to say while it is true that what conan wanted wasn't well good but atali a daughter of giant wasn't innocent here becasue she was the one who brought conan his darker side and had expierence consequences of her actions second point is that this story reminds me of berserk lost chirdlen act were guts turn into dark beast to kill demon moth monster jill
Absolutely epic tale. One of my favorite stories and one of Howards very best.
while aliens existed before mankind they didn't influance humans in their achivment
Where is "Red Nails" ? I hope you will do a review and retrospective in Red Nails in the future.

Love that I found this channel I am a big Conan fan
Islam itself is imperialist in nature. Islam is expanding territory land and convert or kill anyone. Either U become Muslim or die or become sub human as Jews or Christians were treated n Islam lead to conquering the whole Saudi Arabia in the 6th century and later the middle East. 5th to 8th centuries Islam is another form of imperialism with slavery for 14 centuries.
My ten favourite Conan Stories Tower of The Elephant Rogues in The House Queen of The Black Coast The People of The Black Circle Red Nails Jewels of Gwahlur Beyond The Black River Phoenix of The Sword Scarlet Citadel Hour of The Dragon These are my favourite and best Conan stories in my opinion.
Hey bro when are U gonna continue and do Red Nails and Hour of The Dragon two best stories Robert E Howard ever did. This one is one of the very best too.
Being a warrior and stateman ate different things. As a ruler he can kill his people with starvation.
If I made comics for Conan with artistic freedom I probably would have made this story to have a happier ending. I would have added a witch that tells Belit to pretend to be dead because it would protect Conan from some evil that was after her. So finding her not alive would be a stasis spell and then she would come back to life with a floating aura and teleportation spell and then stasis spell when he sets hey pyre on fire and then a teleportation spell. Conan would believe that she died, but she would always follow him to cover his back in his future adventures while fighting the evil that went after her, with the help of the witch. Same story with extra elements to make her survive.
Marvel did that with Conan during 2014 until he lost his boots that she gave him.
@@rathraven1313 Then it is good I make no comics.
@@rathraven1313 So my shallow knowledge of Conan lore would have ruined the lore. Geez.
@@aquarius5719 No. It would've explained Conan's dark moods.
