The double page spread (and all the BWS artwork really) for the 70s Marvel adaptation is simply stunning. The Frost Giants Daughter was one of the earliest Conan stories I became aware of after seeing the 80s film, and imo it really builds brilliantly on the more magical and mythological side of Hyboria. That side that is frequently sidelined by Howard’s in favour of his fixation on historical pastiche, but when he does turn his attention to it god is it good.
This is probably the most controversial of the Conan stories. This is such a beautiful in depth explanation that makes so much sense and brings so much more in the story that could have been missed even to the most advanced readers! The dissection and examples are truly necessary to the integrity of the fabric of this video. It helps to understand the psyche of Conan and others like him! So much more I can say but I’ll finish with saying that I’m so glad that I chose to be one of the earliest subscribers and hope to hear more in depth videos of this caliber from you, and maybe some visits back to further study into stories that were covered before! P.S. If you haven’t already, you should check out The Cybrarian on UA-cam! They’re Conan audiobooks are AMAZING!
So cool there’s somebody just reviewing the original Robert e Howard stories one by one. Not individual comics. Or collections. But each original story, and the particular themes and characters therein. Nice work here.
The particular song you chose from Skyrim matches the story well! Imagine hearing this in an empty blustery tundra upon the top of the world! The sirens singing so mysterious, peaceful, hopeful, and ethereal!
Didn't expect this to become also a history and philosophy lesson. Outstanding well done work! A Channel like this is what Howard and Conan Fans needed for a long time imo. Very well done, thank you!
If you read the story as is Conan is a monster as is the Frost Giant’s Daughter for luring men to be slain. If you look at the story as a metaphor for life and death it’s amazing. Conan literally defies death multiple times in pursuit of Atali and he wins life again through brute force of will
Ive been binging you conan videos for the past two days (only watching the ones covering the stories ive read), and holy hell. You were going so in depth on many of them, and making these stories better than I even thought they were (which is alot). I was very curious what you had to say about this story, because it was only around 10 pages. I figured it was gonna be something like "this a fcked story. She tried to lead him to his death, but that doesnt give him license to try to r@p3 her! Over rated story, blah blah". But by mitra, was i wrong. I had no idea this story was about confronting your Jungian shadow, and i missed the story's parallel to Apollo and Daphne. Brilliant. Best conan channel ive come across. I hope you find more success soon, you deserve it.
It was my first conan story Ive ever read (70's black and white marvel comic) and after that it was the first actual reh novel that I read in its original form. It was a perfect introduction for me to the conan stories after seeing the movie. Since then I also bought the darkhorse comics version. It always felt like the first conan story for me. Maybe just because its short length. Its strange to know that its actually the 8th. Conan feels so young. Unexperiemced. Blinded by the beauty of a woman but already a fearless warrior.
Love this one! Read the Dark Horse comics adaptation. First proper Conan story featured in the first trade paperback volume. Loved the story itself, artwork and the inclusion of actual text from Robert E. Howard’s original; prominent without being overwhelming.
Great story. I've got the old Ballantine Books/Del Rey 3 book collection which attempts to place the books in order of being written and this story is second right behind Phoenix on the Sword. However since that was a recycled Kull story, that makes this the very first story created just for Conan. Originally this is where I really fell in love with the REH stories right here. I love how he mixes mythology with his own pseudo-history. Ymir, the Aesir (here a people all their own instead of the mythic Asgardians) Vanaheim, ect. Over the years I did sour somewhat on this specific story though. It's essentially about Conan trying to rape a girl (being?) And I thought, how was that okay? However you've turned me again on this story. After all these years I never really picked up on the Siren connection. Probably because when I think about this area of Howard's World I think Norse mythology, not Greek. So now you have me looking at it as a story about a Siren who is hoisted by her own petard.
She also fits the description of a Japanese demon called the “Yuki-onna” lit. snow hag. (There M.O. being the taking lost people in snowstorms) However Marvel conan canon, This name is shared by a particular species of vampire.
Very insightful stuff. Just a few short pages and it really does spark the imagination and makes us ask important ethical questions. I for one am probably in the minority but I think Ymir’s daughter had it coming. She is wicked and finally the tables were turned on her wickedness. But two wrongs don’t make a right and especially when it deals with that word that rhymes with grape. I just bought all of the Del Rey Conan books and am so glad that none of it has been edited by a “sensitivity reader”.
two thigns i want to say while it is true that what conan wanted wasn't well good but atali a daughter of giant wasn't innocent here becasue she was the one who brought conan his darker side and had expierence consequences of her actions second point is that this story reminds me of berserk lost chirdlen act were guts turn into dark beast to kill demon moth monster jill
“The most beautiful woman he has ever seen in his life”? A red head? Hell yeah, my boy Robby E. gets it!
Ha ha ha yes! He loves his Norse women 😂
Atali is actually somehow both read head and blond at the same time!
Hands down my favourite Conan story, I just love snow landscapes so much

I came for the sex and violence. I stayed for the philosophical discussion. Great channel!
Wow, this is some fascinating stuff. Good luck with your next video.
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you enjoyed this one too!
@@conanchronicles5268 You're quite welcome.

One of my favorite stories
This channel and these videos are brilliant. As cliche as this is, I can’t put it any more succinctly, keep up the great work!

Frost Giant's Daughter = Biggest tease in Hyperborea
Exactly and Conan wasn’t having it!

What is that haunting background music??? 😮
Cool
I need to ask: what's the name of that Conan Font? :)
was this story the only story that refrenced Norse mythology?

This story can also be titled: F around and find out
Is that the voice of robert from InDeepGeek?
Wow, Conan sounds based.
Based on Genghis Kahn, that is!
There is no greater Base-Meister than Conan. One of the republications of Howard's stories in the 60s should have been named Conan the Based bruh.

THAT INTRO
Conan was mind controled during this
Barry Smith was the Best
Bro, put batteries in your smoke detector.
If you read a story, perhaps it would be best to read it as it was written.
Oh you’re a millennial. Conan so scary.
