HT Monaro Amateur Build
Australia
Приєднався 10 бер 2021
I am doing a restomod build of a 1969 HT Monaro. I’m doing most of the work myself in my garage at home but I’ve had the professionals do the panel and paint and build the engine. It will have a 600hp 421 Chev engine, a TKO600 Tremec manual box mated to a shortened 9” diff with Wilwoods brake setup. The engine bay has been cleaned up and the wiring harness hidden.

Holden HT Monaro Build Ep1 - Introduction
Well your channel finally prompted me to pull the trigger. Wasn't planning to buy a car yet and as I've said previously I was always planning to make a purchase for a project but I was concerned I may not finish it. Well about 3 months ago, opportunity presented and I ended up picking up something in quite good condition for a good price. I bought it because I can enjoy driving it for a while and then when the buzz starts to fall away a bit I can start the project. Just wanted to ask you what manuals have you got. I have found some online that look like the original workshop manuals. I think there are 2 and they are green. Just after some info on what you used. All the best and looking forward to seeing it finished.
Awesome man what did you buy? Yeah the green manuals mate are the best. Two Volumes. They are the original Holden Workshop Manuals. I’ve actually got those two plus two non genuine ones (Gregory’s and another brand). The green ones are the best. Good luck mate 👌👌
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 Black with Matt Black stripes, centerlines, 350, turbo 350 trans, 9 inch. Love it. Was restored about 20 years ago from what a friend of mine suggested, but looking to strip and do a ground up at some stage. Is still in great nick.
Awesome bro 😎
Are you using electronic or mechanical type guages?
Electronic mate.
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 Thank's! May I ask what was your reason to prefer electronic over mechanical?
I went digital so I didn’t have to run oil into the cab for oil pressure. Running just wires is neater. The digital ones were more expensive so I guess I thought they’d be better (more accuracy). I had mechanical originally and changed them.
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 Cool mate, thanks for letting me know! I'll take that into consideration when I do my build! ;-)
I have the HK, but I'm a long way behind you in the rebuild, yet to start actually! Sounds awesome and looking great mate, but I would have preferred the black guages in the dash.
Cheers mate! Not too far until it’s finished now. 👍
Love ya man... LOL... "not sure if it's because there are no globes" 😀
lol I should have explained myself a bit better!! 😀 When I put a tester on it there’s no power flashing through the flasher unit to the indicator socket. So I’ll put some globes in and see if that completes the circuit so that power starts flashing out of the flasher unit…. Does that make sense ? Hope so haha. I’m hoping with globes it will complete the circuit and start flashing. Clear as mud I know.
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 Yeah, but that's probably because the circuit was never completed... doesn't matter (con the fruiterer LOL), I know what you mean. You're a good man mate, thanks for sharing your experiences during the build and look forward to seeing it finished! Take care mate!
I agree. I’m not stressed about it yet for that reason. Thanks for the kind words bro. 😎
All good mate! 😀
Onya man holiday is always good, great update on your progress though, loving the sound of it! great photos of your trip thanks for sharing!
Thanks mate. Looking forward to spending some more time on it 👍
What do you do for work ? Also, you are a big unit 6ft plus ? Sounds mint 👌
Hey mate I work in Rail and yeah man, I’m 6’7” 😎😎😛
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 my God 6'7 .. keep up the good work
Cheers mate 👍
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 WOW, cool! People tell me I'm tall at 6' 2" ;-)
Coming along very nice matey , HT monaros always come 1st 😉❤️🏁
Haha cheers mate. 👍
My father has the same car i used to go on school holidays in it as a family a early 70s HT Monaro in light green with the black stripes he nearly 90 nowadays lots of memories with us 3 kids in the back not much room
Love that 👌👌👌
All takes time! maybe you need a white board? Count down jobs to do and in order! My HQ Monaro took over 5 years ! Looking good. Bill Mc
Thanks Bill. Certainly agree mate cheers.
Great to see you back mate missed your vids
Thanks mate. Keen to get into it. 👍
Farout it started pretty easy , what diameter are the gauges , I think I’m going to go that route with my dash
I think the small ones are 2 1/4” if I’m not mistaken. The big ones I think are 5” but I’ll have to check for you. I still have the boxes. 👍
You’re well ahead of me on your build it’s looking awesome
Cheers mate. 👍
Stoked to see more on this. Thanks for posting it.
Cheers mate!! 👌
Any updates, been a while since the last episode
I’ve to say yes but I’ve just finished a four month lap of Australia with the family. Hopefully when I get back from a couple of weeks of work I’ll be able to get into it. Cheers mate.
BLOODY HANDY!! I just noticed yesterday that my sheer pins have broken and the inner shaft was moving 😲 Knitting needles and 788mm is exactly what I needed to know, THANKS MATE!!!
Glad it helped you mate 🤙🤙
Hi mate nice Monaro bro . Show good content which others learn from or get value from and the subscribers will come naturally. UA-cam is a hustle and consistency is key . Keep at it
Thanks mate. I’m not too fussed to be fair. I do enjoy putting content out when I get time. Cheers for the comment 👌
Just curious. Whats your background. If its not electrical you are doing a bloody good job. Not saying if you are electrical its not. Really impressed with everything you've done. Whats the history of the car. Havre you owned it along time. What motivated you to do a resto. All the best mate. You're getting close now.😉
Haha cheers mate. Na I’m not a sparky or a mechanic or even a tradesman of some description. I have worked in a mechanics work shop many moons ago. But the truth is I’ve played with bikes and cars all my life. Pretty much self taught. I’m a researcher and I like working shit out and I think I’ve got a good eye for detail. I’m pretty fussy too so it all comes together with what’s in the garage I suppose. I’ve owned the old girl since 2011. I don’t know a lot of history on the car apart from the owner before me living in the Pilbara in WA. He bought it from South Australia and it’s a Brisbane built car. It was a little rough around the edges when I bought it and I was always planning a resto. About 8 years ago a young guy ran up its arse and caved the boot in and that’s when I took it off the road and started the resto. I’ve always been a rev head and don’t care much for purity. I just want a tough old head turner to drive to take the kids to school in haha. Cheers mate. 🤙🤙
What ride height did you go for?
Did you watch it? 2” CRS drop spindles on the front and MotorFab low mono leaf setup on the rear 🤙
Bugga on the facia corner mate, so frustrating hey - I can relate 😁..... Hey just on the water in the boot, check your rear screen lower corners too👍👍
Will do bro thanks 🙏 They’re new but worth double checking it all. It’s coming in somewhere 🙄🙄🤙
Mate the haircut c'mon you can do better
I prefer to call it a ‘hair do’ rather than a hair cut 😂😂😂
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 hehe yea just yeno, next cut better be a little more slick!
🤪🤪
Looking good!! Because you have the rear supported under the diff you still have ride height even in the air so you can still get accurate measurements. Would only be an issue if rear stands were under the body and diff was down at full extension.
Trying to wrap my head around it. So what if my driveway was on a 45 degree steep angle? (There is a slight decline there). Wouldn’t matter because all measurements are relevant to each other? Cheers mate.
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 Yeah you’re onto it !!! That’s going to look fn nice going down the road, can’t wait to see you drive it.
@mick6485 thanks for that mate. I think the gearbox needs to be shimmed up a little. I’ll have another look at it. Cheers mate. Looking forward to driving it again 👍
She's looking beautiful mate; bet you can't wait till it's all done
Cheers mate. Yeah defs. The closer I get the longer the job list gets haha. But finishing the wiring was a massive task. The rest is just small shit compared to that. 👍
The contacts in that switch are filthy clean them up and check again
Yeah I figured that. There was a bit going on behind the scenes. That switch that I fitted was a second hand switch that I bought. Apparently it had been tested as working fine. The switch that you see the contacts on isn’t the switch I fitted in the end because the back plastic off my original switch broke when trying to put it all together. But the contacts on that second switch must be filthy inside too. Frustrating.
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 all good auto lec myself so need any tips let me no
Thanks Legend. 👍
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 Over time you get oxidisation which adds to a high resistance connection. An old trick I use to do is get one of those rubbers(eraser) with the pen rubber at one end and the pencil at the other and rub the pen rubber over it. Little bit more abrasive without removing contact material, or very little. Works a treat. If the contacts are really bad a bit of metho and some material over a pen end should help remove residue as well. The blunt end not the sharp end. You don't want to scratch the contact surface.
@@ozgecho3023 love your work. Cheers mate I’ll give it a go 👌👌
Well done mate. Don’t get too fussed with the angle of the dangle. ……most people don’t even start a project…let alone finish it. Reading about everything is good…..but also bad! You are at the point of …..get the count on the road!!!!!
Cheers mate. So close. Just gotta keep chipping away. 👍
Have been watching your build for awhile. Take my hat off to you. You have done an awsome job. My first car was a HT monaro so I have a soft spot for them. Tossing up whether to buy one done or to have a go myself. I've seen plenty that get started but never get finished and I'm concerned I'll run out of steam. Anyway awsome job. Looking forward to seeing it done. Just a couple of quick ones for you. I have watched all the videos but can't remember if you had a big arse fuse on the battery. Was just looking at that post and the main power cable going through the fire wall. Not trying to be an expert here at all, but was wondering do you have any protection on that cable between the post and the battery just in case of a short on that cable to the body. The other one was I thought I would put some theory to the blown ignition module. This may or may not describe what happened but there is an equation P=VI P=Watts, V=Volts and I=Current. For a given load (Watts), if the voltage decreases then by calculation the current will increase so for example if you have a 24W load and the voltage is 12V then the current would be 2A, but if the voltage is only like I think you said 4V then the current will end up being 6A, so bottom line is you end up drawing more current to make the same power so it would have been like a heating element cooking the electronics. If you already knew this then disregard but thought it might be handy in the future if you have something like this again. Hope that helped.👍
I haven’t fused the main power supply as yet. I’ve been trying to find something suitable. I realise that would be best practice. As far as the ignition goes…. I’m still a bit baffled. There shouldn’t have been any voltage drop to it. I’ve calculated all the cabling throughout the car. My research tells me that those MSD’s are known for it. I should have bought an ICE ignition. Cheers mate. 👍👍
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 Haven't done the research on the ignition module so I'll take that on board if I end up having a dip myself.
Fab update, looking beautiful old mate, gotta love the old Holden's GMH & GM Man here, I enjoyed the show👌 🍻🍻 🍻 KC 🇦🇺🇳🇿🤝🇦🇺🇦🇺😉😎👍

The slower you go the quicker you will finish it’s only man made you are doing well enjoy
The 1%’s seem to take the longest haha. Glad the wiring is done now. That was a huge job!
Are you doing power windows?
No.
Nice work, well done mate.
Thanks mate. 👍
Great work mate keep at it you have alot of patience it will be all worth it in the end
Thanks mate. I had to just keep chipping away at it. Glad the inside is nearly done. Hoping it will tidy up ok. 👌
the Mrs taking the piss 🤣🤣, you gotta have a laugh hey or youd go bloody crazy with all the wiring, top effort mate!
😂😂😂 you’re not wrong mate. 👍
Good job mate just take your time you’re doing a better wiring job then most people 👍👍👍
Thanks Legend. Appreciate it. 👍
Nice work Hank, your a patient man. I wouldve chucked the s*** long before now. Car is awesome👌👍
It’s been a mission mate. Haha but it’ll be worth it in the end.
Hey bro you need to run that heater for an hour to see if it will catch on fire or melt
Yes absolutely. I definitely will. 👍
Beautiful Monaro. Bet you can't wait for the drive. Awesome clean car
The last time I drove it was in 2012 and it was running a worn out 308 with a slipping Trimatic. Yeah can’t wait 😛
Do you need to change anything cause of the extra weight of the 9” diff ? I’m doing the same thing with a hg sedan and heard it needs to be engineered?
I’m just running Koni shocks and Caltracs heavy duty mono leaf suspension.
Damn I can relate mate, the old eyes aren't what they used to be, bloody frustrating at times, put those specs on for you next episode..🤣Hats off to you for tackling the wiring, not a quick job by any means, slow and steady. So close now mate!
Thanks mate. I’ll keep chipping away 👍
Nice clean 12 Volts DC, with a really good heavy duty BUS at 12 Volts. Separate circuits at a heavy duty feed. Fans at 60 Amps. Ignition at 20 Amps. Fuel pump at 15 Amps. Host lighting at 20 Amps. The electrical load soon adds up. Look at the Tesla and the welding capacity of the on board battery. Good clean power runs along with the earths or -VE connections. Charging at 13.8 volts on run. The heavy duty flexible cable from Jaycar, tinned/soldered is great.
Nice one mate. Pretty much what I’ve got going on. Sounds like I’m doing something right. Thanks for the advice, always welcomed 👌
Excellent video mate! I’m just about to re wire my whole HG Ute Was thinking about getting the EZ wiring harness because I’ve re wired a car with one of them before Still not excited about it though 😂
Well you’re one step ahead of me having done one before!! Haha. I’ll keep chipping away at it. Good luck mate cheers for the comment.
Just check the midi fuse for your alternator, if it's a 120amp alternator your fuse should be about 150 amp to avoid voltage drop. Great 👍 job.
Great comment because I was wondering about that! Thanks heaps. 👍
Dont use them stupid connections. Strip twist and solder with heat shrink over top on all connections. Wrap with black electric tape once finished or conduit.
No good hey?
@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 me personally I think they are rubbish.
Love the old school Autometer gauges I done the same to my build I think it finishes off the car with style 👌👌👌
Thanks mate. Yeah I’m trying to go for that Pro Street look and I think they fit the bill really nicely 👌
Nope. I HATE wiring. Ended up getting an auto electrician to do my 57. I supplied the new harnesses and he did the rest.
I don’t mind a challenge mate. 😁😁 So long as I get it done properly so it doesn’t burn to the ground but I reckon I’ve got that covered. 👌
Wow mate good on you for tackling that wiring job there is no way I would even know where to start and all the best with it I look forward to your videos👍
Cheers mate. It’s a big job but it’s probably the most rewarding when it’s finished ✅
Hey mate put i battery in the boot about 25 years ago i had some stuff in the boot an it knocked the battery over it was bolted down buy the time i saw it acid was eating into boot for about mounth it did a lot of damage even the fumes will make it rust after all the work you have done its not the go. I would never do it again good luck with it very nice job with the rebuild
Hey mate thanks for the message. I’m not too concerned about it for a couple of reasons. It’s not a lead acid battery, it’s a gel battery which is sealed. Secondly, the boot is going to built with a false floor, sides covered in and a speaker box under the parcel shelf. So the battery will be held in place by the mechanical fixings as well as the false floor. That battery ain’t going anywhere!! Cheers for sharing your experience though 👍👍
Pretty much at the end of this build paint wise, and you’ve done well so far, but a handy tip spraying with a can is to sit the can in hot water before you use it. A few minutes or so. Don’t forget about it! Even when it’s proper Perth hot, I still do it. The paint comes out so different. Thinner and with more pressure. The finish is almost like from a spray gun. Saw the Hackshop Garage blokes doing it. Absolute game changer. I resprayed the radiator support on my VZ and it looks better than new.
That’s not the first time someone has said that to me regarding g the spray cans. I will take heed and listen next time. Thanks mate.
@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267 Just have a muck around with a can on half of something scrap. Then heat the can in hot water and spray the other half and see the difference.
Will do thanks mate. 👍👍👍
good to see you number your heat temp gun Big fella, its coming along.
Lols 😜
Really loving this build mate, well done. Looking forward to the next video with the wiring work.
Thanks mate. I appreciate the positive feedback 💪💪
It just depresses the shite out of me! I bought my first and only Monaro in 1978 from a dealer in Adelaide for AU$1,599.00 and that was a LOT of money for my third year of working. It was a V 5 litre manual with red interior and was 100% stock with it's steel rims and hubcaps and no towbar and stock exhaust and NO rust and full books etc. You could not give these away back then!!!! Everyone wanted Datsuns and Toyotas etc... I sold it in 1981 for AU$5,500 privately and thought I'd made a killing. What is a one owner full books V 5 litre mint cosmetic and mechanical worth now??? I'm about to throw up. Subscribed from SA! Have fun.@@htmonaroamateurbuild9267
Are the intros getting crazy long, or are ya making a lot of progress haha 😂
Intro too long ya reckon? I think it’s 1 or 1.5 minutes…. Always appreciate feedback mate.
