Triumph TR4 Gearbox Install: Tackling the Tough Part
The mission: Install the newly finished gearbox in our 1964 Triumph TR4. This is our least favorite part of the restoration process and feels like trying to tame a mechanical beast. Wrestling this hefty component into position, both inside and beneath the car, requires equal parts strength and finesse. It's a grueling task that we hope to never have to repeat!
We have been fixing a leaking transmission seal, something we have been putting off for a long time. In the next few episodes, we will be going though the entire process of removing the gearbox from the Triumph TR4, investigating what went wrong, and fixing the problem for good.

    I used this technique on a TR6 that I am working on. Fortunate for me, I had the block out of the car and on an engine stand. After flushing it, I rotated it upside down and you wouldn't believer the additional crud that I got out of it. I kept on flushing and rotating it until it ran clear.

  • @DAT240Z72
    @DAT240Z72 2 місяці тому

    Evapo-rust makes a product specific for cooling systems. The manufacturer of CLR warns not to use CLR on any metals except chrome or stainless steel. CLR does not create a rust protective coating like evaporation-rust, metal blast….. CLR on metal will actually re-start the rust process making it worse.

    Hi Thanks for the answer my 93 year old neighbour and pal is currently building one as I am in my garage I will then get the grand kids to build one It will introduce them to soldering and some electronics I have a Mk 11 Jag and and E type I think the faulty ground on the Mk 11 caused the stabilizer to fail I have a new ground strap and a better negative battery lead and the car is now more reliable starting Cheers Mike Mississauga

    Hi I am trying to do this but I dont understand som things My units don't have the metalicstrip around the outer perimeter of the inside of the unit so I dont know how to bring things to ground Also what do you mean by the trace on the right side Is that a strip of solder that you placed Thanks Hope you get to see this Mike Mississauga

    • @WegsGarage
      @WegsGarage 2 місяці тому

      Not sure if some boards are different. There is a ground somewhere, so if you have a meter, try to figure out using continuity where the connection is made to the metal case. If you can't find it, you can always run a wire to the case itself from ground on the regulator..

    In German car culture we dislike hylomar in many areas. It can create many problems trough making its way into the inside of whatever is sealed underneath it. I saw a few motors blew up cause oil or water filters got blocked. Then boom 😅 But for the timing belt I don’t see much of a problem as long as you apply it carefully 👍🏽

    I've only had a TR4 transmission out once. And that was ages ago on a parts car. So I don't recall it being all that bad. The transmission on my Datsun 620 pickup on the other hand, took well over 12 hours to change the clutch on. Tight. Nonetheless, it doesn't look like fun. I'll find out on my 72 TR6 I suppose. :)

    Would this work for a 65 TR4A? Mine doesn’t have the PCV valve and is just vented with a hose that goes below the engine block near the frame.

    • @WegsGarage
      @WegsGarage 4 місяці тому

      My understanding is if you have the tube and hose out of the block, you do not need to worry about this. You can just vent the valve cover with a regular breather.

    • @royals37
      @royals37 4 місяці тому

      @@WegsGarage The hose I have comes off the valve cover vent and goes under the car. The blow by fumes smell bad. The block vent is closed with a bolt. It would be good if you could vent the blow by directly into the exhaust system.
