Cliff, thanks so much for making these videos! Is a part 2 for this one on the roadmap? There’s so much valuable knowledge packed in- I think I’ve watched this one a dozen times and I’m still learning from it.
I'm glad you liked the video and really appreciate your taking the time to comment. Unfortunately, I don't think we are going to do anymore episodes on the Vessel Monitoring as it didn't get a very high response rate (too in the weeds?). Feel free to write if you think I can be of further assistance and thank you again for watching.............Cliff
What a great series of video's! They make me appreciate the boat I own, which is a huge job to take care of and operate, but much smaller and easier than Oasis. We Saw Oasis at the dock last Summer at Port McNeill when we were on our way around Vancouver Island. What a beautiful boat!
with the likes of this, I would rather have a boat with a steel hull rather than a fibreglass hull boat
Another wonderful and super informative video!! A must see for anyone before hiring their next crew member to really be thoughtful about how to make the relationship succeed on both sides.
Hi Cliff, is Connie from Marina Bay, so happy to hear your voice. So glad you still have a Golden Retriever, I remember when you got Marina. What was the name of the one before Marina? Carl and I are doing well and it sounds like you are doing very well.
Hi Connie, so good to hear from you!! You met Marina (the 2nd) as my previous Golden was also named Marina. Sarina only came on-scene in 2013. Please send regards to Carl and I hope that life is treating you well. Hugs........Cliff
Great information. Please don’t take so long getting the next episodes out. This stuff is SO helpful.
Another great episode. Have been totally obsessed with these episodes, trying to absorb as much as I can. If anyone is interested in this sort of cruising, I haven’t seen anything else online (or anywhere) that is as informative, interesting, entertaining or inspirational as this series. Thanks Mr Rome 🫡
These sheets that you have prepared for the guests seem great! Would you be willing to share them? I’m currently preparing them for a similar size vessel.
Glad you liked the episode. If you send me your email address, I'll email them to you (they are likely in a Word format)........Cliff
Incredible episode! 🌊 The practical insights on crew management and boat care are absolute gold for any serious cruiser. Your personal stories add so much value-it's clear this is the result of decades of experience. Congrats on another fantastic installment-I’m excited to see what’s next! 🚤⚓
Another amazing production- this is a comprehensive classic!
you just lost all credibility.....out of here
Fiberglass withstands collisions better than steel? Are you insane?
Excellent information. Thank you SO MUCH for putting this all together for us. 👍
I'm glad you found it useful and thank you for taking the time to send us a comment........Cliff
Where did you find insurance for a 65/70 foot Trawler yacht at US$ 15,000/year???
Travelers (West Coast of the US)
Thank you for taking the time to lay out a detailed analysis of the subject matter. I found the fuel management and requirements especially illuminating. A topic that is, (intentionally?), glossed over. I look forward to watching the other segments.
And, is there shipyards that build ships like this anymore? I’m just stunned and in awe of your work here cliff! Have been watching every video, for days on end, totally inspired!
There are good shipyards to be found, but like companies in every industry, you can probably count the really good one's on one or two hands. As I say in Ep 5, shipyards (ie. their empolyees, management and cash flow) are not a static situation and a lot depends on the economy, who is in control, their recent builds, how well the owner has thought through the project, etc.
Nordhavn. Bering…. Think there are severel boats to choise.
What an incredible library of information and knowledge! So greatful. Would love to know how much a vessel like Oasis would cost in 2024!????
Thank you. I have no idea what it would cost today because I'm not current on the price of material or labor. That said, OASIS took 107,000 labor hours to build and back in 1992 and, as yards go, Delta was relatively efficient.
@@AnAchievableDream really appreciate your response thanks Cliff. Looking forward to more content, must be a huge undertaking!
well done, these are also lessons for life
The best explorer yachts on the market, maybe team with Veem Marine size 54 gyro stabilisation plus Veem Marine intercept 5 blade propellers tuned to the horsepower of the motors plus at rest retractable fin stabilisation
Excellent work 😊
Also great voice presence tone and intonation very professionally presented.
Very well presented. Thank you for all the great information. Invaluable in so many ways. Thanks again
Such great information as we take our 45’ trawler south this summer from Seattle to LA area. Question. In the weather section, as I start several months out getting a feel for the west coast weather patterns. I notice I get good 48 hour weather window for my needs, but near a prospective departure the NOAA forecast will include SCA when all my other forecasts tell a different story. As I follow the weather window the NOAA forcast never materialize. So my question…on departure do I stick with my forcast window and disregard NOAA or heed the official forcast and delay. Thank you again. These weather seminars take a complicated topic and break it down into manageable and reasonable concepts
There is no way that any of the global weather sites can have the refined nuanced accuracy and anything close to the local knowledge that is covered in local forecasts like NOAA issues. They are good for general planning purposes, trends and off-shore conditions (which are more often than not turn out to be similar to NOAA's local forecast). I certainly wouldn't disregard NOAA, but in those situations you can always use buoy and ship reports the morning of your departure as a sort of sanity check before heading out of the harbor (or offshore). I have also had the reverse situation, where NOAA has issued a near coastal weather updates in my exact position, showing the winds at less than 12 kts when it was blowing a gale. They've gotten much better, but not quite perfect. Also, when in doubt NOAA will typically err on the side of caution (which seems appropriate). Hope this helps.
@@AnAchievableDream Thank you for the thoughtful response. I have been watching all your videos for this passage since it is the first for us on our trawler. We have made this trip before but followed a more blue water passage since we were on our Hans Christian 43 where wind and sea state are a much different consideration. We have circumnavigated Vancouver Island on the trawler so we have a taste of off shore conditions on the trawler but this will be the first extended open passage. Actually we are headed to the Santa Barbara harbor where we have a slip and I just now remembered your origins to that area aboard the beautiful family sailboat where you started. Still is the most beautiful harbor on the west coast if not the northern hemisphere. If you are ever transiting through SB I would love to host you and you crew for a drink at SBYC. Thank you again for these in-depth examinations of cruising aboard a power vessel. Truly an impressive presentation.
Great video! The right boat makes a difference for these trips.
Fantastic video, thank you for posting
You lost me at...CLIMATE CHANGE!...
Absolutely comprehensive informative thankyou
Wow! I’ll stick with a Honda outboard!
Excellent video presentation! We feel almost like we were there! Thanks!
Bravo
Właśnie odkryłem Wasz kanał Tego potrzebuję do szczęścia Dziękuję za wszystkie materiały 😊
Absolutely luv your series of videos, extremely informative and detailed, I hopefully will be in the position to purchase a explorer yacht, I'm almost certain it will be a extensively modified Steel Hybrid Bering 77 200 ton with double redundancy on every system, my home base is mid eastern coast of a land down under and intended cruising grounds would be the Indian, Pacific, Atlantic and Southern Oceans
Hi Michael. Thank you for your note. I don't have any direct (first-hand) experience with Bering's yachts. That said, they appear to be more form over function, with very appealing exterior styling and a great approach to marketing. Maybe you'll be able to let me know one day from hands-on experience? Best of luck...........Cliff
Thanks for your advice cliff, I have spoken with a couple of Navel Architects about the hull design and it's rated CE1 Unrestricted, I am deleting the swim platform and having the Transom extended so it will be a 26 metre yacht with a deeper keel plus larger fuel tanks hopefully extending the range to 8000 nautical miles, also deleting the top sun deck
This is so amazingly complex. I’m in shock! You are simply brilliant! The yacht I traveled on was owner/operator. However when the boat was moved to Mexico yearly, a captain and crew were hired to bring it south. The owner was a smart man too! Once safely in Mexico, only a boat hand was onboard for security, generally cleaning. The friends and women did the cooking of food and basic meal prep ourselves . A perfect size yacht. If we went up or down the coast for overnight, we went out to dinners by taking the tender. But breakfast and lunch, the ladies on board did that. It looks as if your 50ft was very manageable. The one we were on was 72 (?) if I recall. Four small staterooms. Thanks for the memories of my parents, and now gone friends 🙏🏼
Those sound like all-to-familiar experiences and memories! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for taking the time to write to me..........Cliff
These are amazing films! I’m so sorry I have to turn the music off. Have no clue why is does not work at all for me, at all. However your film work is sensational❤️ I have watched Venture of Flemming Yachts at least 10 times each. So incredibly relaxing! But once was lucky enough to sail on a friends of my parents yacht from Vancouver to Ketchikan. Being I was still working I had to fly back to the East Coast as the others went forth. Sure we would pick it up again the following yr. I was able to leave. But, due to tragic health news, it was to be their last be trip to Alaska. But I’m an older lady now, and I still remember the excitement of being on a yacht!!! My parents had traveled often with their friends, and I had been on the boat many times in Mexico. But, Actually sleeping, waking up, cooking and being part of it is something I will never forget in my dotage. Thank you so much for opening this up to most who will never in a million years have this experience! Unless you have done it, to explain the sheer thrill of this experience is beyond measure !
An excellent video! Thank you for the efforts to make a very informative and interesting/inspiring series.
Thank you, and welcome to the channel. I'll be interested to hear what you think of ep. 5.............Cliff
Great video and wonderful advice. While our boat is much smaller and simpler, we will be incorporating many of your suggestions as we prepare our vessel and selves for our upcoming voyage to Alaska.
Cliff, I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to produce these videos. This one came at a perfect time as I’m mid build on my Maretron system, sounds like my question will be answered in the next video but not sure I want to wait, ha ha. What sensors are you using with the TPM100 for fluids? I understand ports 1 and 2 are for thermocouples and ports 3,4,5 and 6 use J type thermistor. I found omega TC-J-1 /8npt-G-72-SMP I’m using for my main engine and generator coolant temp but they are thermocouples, thus only two per TMP100… are your using thermistors for engine and transmission oil temps? Could you please share part numbers, thanks.
Morning Joel. Thank you for your kind words. I think that I put most of my audience to sleep...not one of my more popular episodes. Unfortunately, I'm not on the boat right now, so I can't answer your question; however, my recollection is that wherever possible, we tried to use (standardize) with Nason sensors (if that is of any help?). One tip I might share is that we found using ferrules were a great way to make-up all our NMEA connectors. Good luck with the project....it's totally a worthwhile investment of time and resources!!
Thanks, looks like Nason has what I need. One more question, what's your opinion on monitoring engine oil temp? My assumption is because of the oil cooler if coolant temp goes up so will oil temp, is there any situation where oil temp will go up and coolant won't?
Generally speaking, I think you are correct; however, I suspect that there could be a situation where the oil cooling system could start to fail or degrade independent of the engines coolant system either from excessive friction, a cooler issue, loss in a oil volume or circulation. My suspicion is that monitoring engine oil has come out of both aeronautics and the race car industry where high performance and relatively light duty engines are being pushed to their limit such that the oil temperature/viscosity would need to be closely monitored to avoid premature engine failure. (Just a guess...).
Thank you for this excellent video. We will be making this very passage this May. We saw you in Prince William Sound and were admiring your beautiful vessel. We just discovered your channel. Thank you.
Appreciate the kind words. Enjoy the holidays and if you are patient you will have an easy and beautiful passage across the Gulf...........Cliff
I was captain on a big motor yacht being refit at the same yard where the wreck of Zopilote was being transformed into Tatu... I will say the underwater shape of the Delta 70 is just wonderful to regard. These are absolutely massive, beautiful and incredibly robust vessels. Having recently done the Vancouver to Cabo run (and back to San Francisco) in a Tollycraft 48, I would have loved to have that monster hull under me! Thanks for sharing your experience Sir....
This is GREAT! Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to watch the episode and to send me a comment.
Cliff, any chance you could help me buy a used car next weekend
Excellent as always. Top notch presentation! How to chart fuel burn on ocean crossings using this software would be interesting. Just one knot makes a big difference on if the tanks will be wet or dry when you get there, as you well know.
What an amazing resource for anyone who is buying or currently owns an explorer trawler...thanks you so much for producing this valuable resource for boat enthusiasts. Who built Oasis?
Thank you for taking the time to comment on our video!! OASIS was built by Delta Marine, located in Seattle, WA.
Fantastic episode. looking forward to the next one
An incredibly comprehensive video with a wealth of knowledge on all the things to consider when choosing a vessel monitoring system and setting it up! These are the often overlooked details that can make all the difference when it comes to proper monitoring of your boat and the safety of you and your loved ones onboard.
What a monumental series! I have some small appreciation of what goes into this type of production, and am in awe of what you are doing.
Hi Ricardo. Much appreciated. It's comments like that which make it all worth the effort (especially since I intentionally don't monitize any of these). Thanks again.....Cliff
Wow. Amazing series. Most educational and entertaining one I’ve seen on UA-cam. Would love to see you transit the Northwest Passage
The NW Passage did hold interest for me about 20 years ago, but I think I'll leave that for the next generation. Thank you for taking the time to comment. It means more than you know...........Cliff
Another great detailed and informative episode. I must admit halfway through I was thinking either you were trying to be clever or I was very dumb because it was just white noise. However it all came together it made me see this just wasn't a luxury toy like I have thought. Having you no previous experience only a desire, it becomes very clear in these videos it is an achievable dream.
Thank you for hanging in there. By the time I finish an episode I usually have lost all perspective. I did consider breaking this into 2 episodes, but decided that's what the pause button is for. Much appreciated!! Cliff
Very informative video Cliff. You mentioned that aluminum and steel had drawbacks. Do you have any thoughts on the FPB’s designed by the Dashews?
I've known Steve Dashew for years and think very highly of him and his boats.
Stunning drone footage and fascinating maps and information. Does Katmai National Park and Preserve provide any protection for wildlife from being disturbed by drones?
These shots were filmed 5 years ago, when drone flying was relatively new (at least it was for us). That was the one and only summer that we attempted to take pictures from a drone, so I am not sure what the rules are in that remote part of Alaska? That said, from my perspective and after our experience, I would be supportive of there being restrictions. Thanks for watching the video and I hope you found it useful.
