If it sucks in air & fuel, and spits out smoke, noise, and horsepower, I'm in! Oh, and if it makes a huge bang and sends a projectile on its way in a hurry, count me in too. I have only rarely met an explosion I did not thoroughly enjoy, only the ones the commies sent my way in Vietnam. Other interests include piston aircraft, lattice boom cranes, pre WW II vehicles, big Caterpillar tractors, manual & CNC machining, McNaughton's whisky, good beer (no Bud Light), and road trips. As I share some of these on this channel, please enjoy, and subscribe to catch the latest post. Thanks! Jeff, AKA Old Iron Jarhead
1947 FEDERAL BUILD VIDEO 5
The cowl, cab, and chassis are finally mated for completing the Federal build. This project has consumed many thousands of pleasurable hours over the past many years. This vehicle will definitely be a one-off. A cross between a semi truck and a one ton pickup with a touch of rat rod, it will be unique enough to display at a car show, and practical enough to haul a load of scrap iron to the recycle plant.

Why I hate W900s
Переглядів 91День тому
Despite the fact that Kenworth has always built high quality west coast trucks, just because it is mechanically excellent does NOT mean it is nice to drive. As a fully grown individual, I was totally uncomfortable, miserable, and half angry every time I was assigned a W900 for a run. Just you watch, and hopefully enjoy, or at least understand my opinion.

Some salty language used here. Tender ears should find another video. This truck had refused to start for 3 or 4 years. The owner had the starter "checked-out" by a supposed repair person and it was pronounced good. He had a fellow who formerly worked for Cummins run the rack as well. But it would never start. We ended up with 2 faulty starters that were sent back to the same individual and sup...
1949 Buick: Reviving a sleeping Roadmaster Hearse

This wonderful old Buick has been sitting for over 6 years and I was asked to help the owner get it to run again. Here we work through testing the ignition system and filing the points to get spark. Then we find two separate problems with the fuel pump and carburetor we have to correct. It's a fun video with some details involved in getting a neglected vehicle to run again.
POLISHING ALUMINUM 1946 FEDERAL TRUCK BUILD
Переглядів 2283 місяці тому
Sending out aluminum parts for professional polishing is EXPENSIVE! This is because it is a time consuming task requiring specialized knowledge, supplies, and safety provisions. The stuff involved is not costly or hard to obtain, and for one-off jobs the power tools can be rented. This video demonstrates how to take a scuzzy chunk of aluminum scrap and turn it into stunning polished accessories...

1953 Harley Davidson 50th Anniversary Edition

Video made for eBay ad to sell the bike. I think this may have been the first year Harley provided a hand clutch and foot shift. Both were jury-rigged through linkage to the earlier tank shift/foot clutch components. Neither were that user friendly, but they worked.

1936 Studebaker President rumble seat coupe
Переглядів 1739 місяців тому
Video for an eBay ad to sell the car. Every Studebaker I have worked on was a very well engineered and solidly built car. Their bread & butter flathead six cylinder engines were always about 20% smaller than competitors to emphasize economy. In some years the Ray Leowy industrial design studios imposed rather off the wall body and grill shapes that appealed to some but put-off plenty of others.
1936 Hudson 8 rumble seat coupe
Переглядів 769 місяців тому
Video made for eBay ad to sell the car. Just about the ultimate in art deco styling in 1936, Hudson cars sold well in 1936 and '37. Strait eight engines were especially enjoyed because their smooth operation, even at very low speeds allowed acceleration from almost a dead stop to cruising speed without ever leaving high gear. This car was a true pleasure to drive.

Video for eBay ad to sell the car. No wonder so many of these cars ended up modified in any number of ways. Flathead V-8s proved nearly indestructible even with wild speed and horsepower accessories from wild camshafts to high compression pistons and multiple carburetors, usually Stromberg 97s. Coupes and TuDoor models rarely escaped in stock form. Every ambitious kid in the 1950s wanted a Ford.

Video made for an eBay ad to sell the car. Take a ride in one of Walter Chrysler's advanced concepts that hit the market about 6 years too soon for wide public acceptance. The 1934 Chrysler and DeSoto Airflows were not attractive and sold poorly. Stuck with the body design for the next 3 years, the stylists gradually made them somewhat more appealing by grafting on more conventional grilles and...
1929 Model A TuDoor

This video was made to be included in an eBay ad to sell the car. This Model A had a complete brake overhaul from the pedal shaft through the shoe rollers, and it stops like new. A 3.54 x 1 ring and pinion were installed. The rod and main bearings were checked and adjusted to spec, and the engine needed no additional work.

Jeff you sir are absolutely AMAZING!!! Your determination and skill to build this 1947 Federal by yourself should stand as an example of your genius. To take a bunch of parts and build this “IRON FRANKENSTEIN” is insane.. What a build series!! Love the black and green color scheme.. keep up the great work!!!
Thanks for checking in and enjoying the project. Yes, I did have to fabricate and/or machine many of the parts to fit this mismatched bunch of stuff into one vehicle. I am on the way to Montana late this week to continue work on the Cat dozers and will be posting videos on progress there soon. All the Best, Jeff
Looks like the door jammed up cuz the cab is all busted up judging by the throttle pedal. Is that an old Chemical Express fleet truck?
Thanks for checking in. I drove that same truck many times when it was only a few years old. There were 3 1970 W900s in the fleet and they were even worse. Get the frame wracked a little bit on some uneven ground and it could be a minor battle to get the door open. The truck was originally owned by Fedderly-Marion Freightlines in Bellevue WA where I drove for 11 years.
You are a great guy with a good sence of humour as well. We have always loved the Triumph motor bikes as they were reliable and nice sounding. We had a 1950's bike and my dad use to ride it all over the Island of Sri Lanka as he was a salesman. I use to travel with him . This bike we had never missed a beat. We live in Australia now and we wish we brought that bike with us. Lovely to hear your story.
Thank You for checking in. I made the video to sell the bike as I was in my mid 70s and the traffic here was getting insane. I am so glad you enjoyed it. Jeff
Thanks, was a great help.
Thanks for checking in and letting me know the video was helpful. Did you find videos 2 and 3? Jeff
Btw what a piece of shit! Why would you buy something you can actually work on? Today you need something that only dealers and " authorized service centers" can repair. Look,!, you being out of work for a few days or a month is so much better for the environment, you poors that get up every day and go to work to build the country are just not smart enough to understand that we now have solar panels and windmills to do what that monstrously did a hundred years ago! Look it up, there's millions of videos of windmills loading trucks and solar panels cutting grade! You old dinosaur, get onboard! 😢it is sad to me that young people nowadays think everything that is has always been here and always will be. Strong men that most people of our time would probably hate, built everything you can see or use, and the leaky smokey thing😂 you are turning your nose up at built more in its life than you are likely to!
Try poring some fuel in the fuel line to fill the top of the pump and soften the diaframe and then it'll start to suck again if not successful then it might be a clogged line form the tank
Nice.old kw 900
Glad you liked it. I much enjoyed the KWs before the W-900 came out. Much more comfortable to drive. Jeff
It's cool that you found the truck you started with. I have a similar story with a 69 W923A. Just had to change out my pt pump it was full of rust . The truck had set for over 15 years. I had to remind myself how to shift a 5 and 4 again. You're right about the cabs. Lots of memories.
Thanks for checking in. I will be doing a video about why I hate W900s soon. I spent thousands of hours in them and was pissed-off every minute. Pete cabs were far more comfortable, even Freightliners were batter. Lots of complaints on the way. Stay tuned. Jeff
Great video ,Jeff, really enjoyed it😊
Thanks for checking in. It's great to know some of these videos are appreciated. Jeff
i fucken love it
Thanks for sharing my feelings - exactly! Jeff
Take a shot everytime you hear fucking or fucker in this video and you will be fucking hammered by the end of the fucking video...lol.
I'll bet that fucking pump is no fucking good. Probably need to get that fucker replaced.
Thanks for checking in. The pump turned out fine, after some worrisome moments. PT fuel systems are nearly bulletproof. Jeff
I have one just like this.
Glad to know there is another one around. I will forward your comment to the proud owner. Jeff
That fucker is a runner.
Wow. That's a neat build. Like to find a decent IH truck.
Thanks for your kind comments on my previous truck. I restored it from a rust bucket in the late 1990s. There were at least 4 donor trucks and the only things that remained of the original were the frame, front axle, steering gear and the serial number. Check out my 1947 Federal build nearing completion. 4 videos on my UA-cam channel: youtube.com/@oldiron Paste that in your address box in your browser - NOT in the search box, and you will find them. All the Best! Jeff
Been searching for some info on magnetos as I too am messing with one for the first time on a 56 d7. Was very happy to find this video for two reasons. Very informative, and fuckin funny! Found myself laughing out loud several times. Thank you !
Thanks for checking in. Did you see all 3 mag videos? They are on my UA-cam site at "youtube.com/@oldiron" along with old Cat rescue clips. Paste that in the web address box - Not in the search box, and you will go straight to it. All the Best. Jeff
I really enjoyed your video on your Federal truck and was wondering who you got to redo the gauges for you I have a 38 Federal that I'm getting ready to start on
Great to hear from another Federal owner! Bob's Speedometer in Howell Michigan: www.bobsspeedometer.com did the work. Hold onto your chair - instrument restoration is NOT cheap. I have posted 3 Federal videos so far on my youtube site at "UA-cam.com/@oldiron". Best of luck on your project. Jeff
@Oldiron thanks so much for that info I seen yours on the video looks good
@@Oldiron I hope not more than a grand but I'll see what happens
@@leonhenson8348 I will be posting a video on polishing aluminum. I had to go to UA-cam U to figure it out so I could polish the bumpers and front fenders. Stay tuned. Jeff
Love your video and your car. I have a 1937 Cadillac series 60 four-door sedan and I like driving it too. Especially on our freeways. It seems to be quite content at 70 mph. Best regards from Phoenix Arizona my name is Idan Greenberg and I am in the Cadillac LaSalle club. Are you? I have a friend in the club that has a 1936 Cadillac series 75 convertible sedan.
Thanks for checking in to my site. I ever owned that Cadillac. It belonged to a customer who had a couple dozen classics and I repaired and maintained them for him. He decided to pare off some of his vehicles and had me market them on eBay. The video link was pasted in the ad. The car went for $60,000 and ended up in Switzerland. Jeff
Thanks for the video. That cleared up a few mysteries for me. I have an MJH on a 1930's Waukesha 4 cylinder that powers a well drilling rig. Was getting no spark. I cleaned it up and now it will shoot a spark through my left hand and out my right haha.
I'm very glad I made the 3 videos. I had to sort of stumble into magneto tech myself. Once I had enough information and went through 3 of them, it just made sense to put it out there for others. Jeff
You've paid your dues can say what the hell you like, take care!
Thank You, Sir. I would not have it any other way. God Bless. Jeff
You don't need to explain yourself. Just be yourself.
If I had to have a conversation without using profanity I would be a mute.Actually have you ever seen an Italian trying to talk without using his hands, Can't be done without difficulty.
I am of the same mind. Thanks for checking in. Jeff
I think this is my problem with my pony motor, have a d318 in an old dragline and it is weak spark in the daylight
See if it will jump a spark 1/8". If not check coil primary resistance of minimum 6200 ohms. Clean and set points to .014 - .018". Condenser .29 - .33 mfd. Standard Magneto has parts list online. Jeff
Thanks for sharing
This is so awesome!!! Must be the d8 you were saying is 700 miles away. I have been watching your videos on rebuilding a magneto. I live just south of sandpoint Idaho and am in the process of buying a d6 7u cat that has no spark at the mag.
The magneto I did in the video was from a D6, If you need parts, Standard Magneto in the Chicago area has most of them available. Cat used other brands than American Bosch, so you may find something else on yours. Jeff
This is great thanks for sharing
Glad you found it useful. Thanks for checking in. More Cat & truck videos coming soon. Jeff
Three excellent videos. Inspires me to tackle some of the tack in my own workshop, albeit smaller scale stuff. Thanks for the tips and common sense advice.
Thanks for checking in and enjoying the videos. Would love to ask you to subscribe as I am doing more on similar subjects. Jeff
That Jeff, he’s a salty old wrench. He tells it how it really is. Great videos on the MJK mags!
Very well explained plus how it works. Your 920 mile round trip sounds like just the sort of f**king thing I would get myself into. Good on you Jeff. Thanks for taking the time to put up this video and sharing your new knowledge. I look forward to videos 2 and 3.
Thanks so much for checking in. Glad you enjoyed the video. 2 and 3 are now up. Jeff
@Jeff Howard thanks for the video, we are just on with a Bosch MJK here in the UK off a D7 so this is a great help, thanks
Great to hear you checked in and enjoyed the video. I am trying to make and post the next two yet today as I am out of town for a few days starting Monday. I'll get a move on for you guys. Jeff
Informational video Jeff. Thanks for sharing. I will be looking forward to the next one. Take care and stay safe
Glad you enjoyed it. I hope it finds its way to others who have magneto questions or issues. Follow-up videos coming soon to finish the presentation. Jeff
I admire the manly things you have done but I like, to a much higher degree, your intellect, and education. Swearing only diminishes these. Gorgeous Triumph.
Thanks for checking in on the bike. Hope you have a few moments to peruse a few of the other videos on the site. youtube.com/@oldiron
es posible poner un arranque electrico a motores tan antiguos, gracias por sus videos

Nice car Jeff
Nice F’n bike ! Smooth as butter … 🧈 😊
Next to your Packard one-twenty, this Studebaker is a great looking car. I have to say ( or ask ) did see lumps and bumps along the driver`s door panel?
I do not recall any noticeable defects, but the right lighting angle may have shown something. The only issue that showed was a slight misalignment where the hood sat on the cowl. This was pointed out in the eBay ad. The car ended up in France. Jeff
@@Oldiron Lucky buyer then.
👏👏 Nice running .
Thanks 👍It did run like a Swiss watch. Jeff
A Beautiful car .
Wish I could have driven it for you. I just do not fit in Model A TuDoors or pickups. I hopped-up a '30 coupe 4 banger and had to have an upholstery outfit cut two coils out of the seat springs. Jeff
We had a 1936 Packard Six, back in the 1950's and it was a four door, and in near mint condition. Very similar to the One-Twenty, except the One-Twenty ( I think ) was an 'upgraded' model with more fancy trim. I remember that ours had an in-line six cylinder, flat head engine, sounded ( if my memory serves ) very similar to your beautiful '120' as shown here. Thanks for the drive down 'memory lane' for me.
The six cylinder Packards were called the 115 series, and came along in 1936 or '37 to market an entry level Packard. The 237 cu in engine was so tough that White Motor Truck Co. put thousands into their lighter trucks and tractors. White used the post war 245 cu in engine as well.
@@Oldiron According to the sales/advertising brochure that was in our Packard, our model was called a 'Packard Six` I believe it was to introduce the 6 cylinder in-line engines of that model.. It also had a manual three speed transmission and floor shifter ( as your model One-Twenty has..)
I just bought a 1938 Seagave 65 ladder truck with a Red Diamond engine
I had a lot of experiences with Red 450 and 501 engines over the years. They are great, but they do not appreciate being pushed down hill. Don't let the truck wind it up beyond about 2,200 RPM on downgrades and you will be in the clear. Jeff
D318 engine sir ?
It is a D318 as near as I can tell from the specs. It is left hand rotation, though, which kinda surprised me. Jeff
That pony engine earned its keep. Nice job my friend
It owed me big time after all the heartburn it dished out getting it to run.
Yep, try a football like @wilma suggested.
Thanks everybody for checking in! Just having a bit of fun and sharing. Right you are, a football would probably fit. Jeff
👍👍
A foot ball would fit better
That’s an interesting idea, hope it works
