I grew up in the 70's and 80's. My Gen was the last to actually touch grass and know what Saturday morning cartoons were all about. While all of this is very nostalgic, it was left in the 80's for a reason. I say leave it there.
Pagers are still in use, though not as wide spread
May YAH Bless.
Mitchell and Webb got me with its avocado... I remember that original sketch and it was brutal but hilarious 😂 Great video btw mate and loving your channel 👍🏻
Well... Hizbollah disagrees on one of these... 🤨
My whole childhood
Most of these died due to moneygrubbing corporate IP holders gutting them for a quick sale
I remember the video rental man in his van who use to stop in our street. He had a few 'under the counter' movies...from Sweden mostly.
Does anyone remember the tootsie roll commercial?
I remember K- Mart and their blue light specials. You never knew where or when there would be one. And Woolworths, I remember it too. Our local store had sugar sun tea it was good especially in the summer. I would make sure that I was on D street in the summer just so I could go and get my self a glass of sweet ice sun tea. It was good. We had a radio shack in our Mall in Yuba City California, I live in Marysville and I miss all of those good stories. In the 80's I owned and drove a 1964 Dodge Dart, so I don't have an AC in my car so making a stop at the Woolworths was a must.
Was there for every single thing on the video. Born in the early sixties, teenager in the seventies.
The 7up gold years are wrong
In some countries the jukebox had the song coupled with a video. Les Marionettes by Christophe was such a song. He was singing in French and in the background were dancers imitating puppets. 😊
The girl in the thumbnail doesn’t look too obsolete!
Metal ice cube trays could also be used to freeze juice or soda! Maybe make your own popsicles just add sticks and you had it made!
When I was in the military during the Vietnam War it seemed like everyone had a reel to reel tape deck and some cool speakers and a receiver. You could buy them for practically a song when you were overseas from the military exchange store. 😊
Punch cards were not supposed to be bended, folded, spindled or mutilated, but in the navy I did it to a card. Boy did I regret it! I didn’t even do it on purpose. 😢
Bought my first component stereo system at Radio Shack and my late wife and I always enjoyed shopping at Kmart. Good times.
I never used a slide rule even though I was old enough to have used one. 👎
Party lines were dangerous if you had an emergency and couldn’t get a hold of the police or firefighters.
Before the alphanumeric pager , we have a small number code book for numeric pager. 😁
Mall of America has a Toys R Us store. It doesn't resemble the old stores much back in the day but at least they are trying to keep it alive. Unfortunately, they don't sell video games like they used to.
Beepers/Pagers are a few on this list that actually did not become obsolete. Isn't this correct, Israel? L O L.
What about TV. That TV is useless today
Nothing wrong eating what you had. It doesn't take that much to elevate it. A pot of beans is much better for you than today's junk food. People today whine they are struggling but will pay $5 for a little few ounce container of diced onions instead of spending half that for a 3 lb bag of onions they have to dice themselves - oh, the horrors having to dice an onion! Today, many people don't know how to make gravy without a packet. Others don't have a clue how to make it without milk so will waste gas making a milk run to the store and come back with stuff they don't need. Psst, that liquid you just drained out of the can of carrots/corn/green beans or water could have subbed for the milk but is now literally money down the drain just like meat stock could have been used if only you hadn't thrown the bones with meat attached in the garbage. Or there is a container of sour cream, whipping cream or plain yogurt (74 cents a quart homemade which makes a $1.50 cheesecake) sitting in the back of the fridge waiting to spoil and end up, again, in the garbage. All could have been used in the gravy. Studies say in the US, 40% of food at home is wasted. Cook at home and don't blow even more money eating out.
I understand why most things are on the thumbnail, but women? 😂
The Life Ad Campaign "Amused everyone...", everyone except me. I had to endure it from my childhood through most of my early adulthood....Actually there was a commercial where the Trix Rabbit *did* get a bowl of Trix. That shot on this film showed a 'Yes' or "No' ballot on the bow is where kids could vote for him to get some Trix. The kids poll was a Yes win and it resulted in one commercial where the rabbit did get some Trix....Marlboro Man ads came out in the 60's. FTC banned cigarette ads on TV on Jan 1 1971. ..A Lot of these were 60's going into the 70's like Palmolive, Campbell's soup, Lay's...The last three words sung at the very end on The Doors single Touch Me were "Stronger Than Dirt!".
I still have VHS tapes, also regularly use my DVD's, BluRays and CD's in the vehicle. I have them, they are the genres I like, why pay for a subscription for music and movies I already have. The local supermarket still does DVD rentals. My doctor still uses a fax. Generally use google maps to see where I need to go, don't have GPS. I don't take photos with my phone.
I miss Montgomery Ward!
We had a drive-in theater until the early 90's in my town. One still operates nearby, about a 25 min drive away. My wife and I also have a large collection of vinyl that we listen to almost daily. Couldn't watch the moon landing live, but I've seen Space X catch a rocket re-entering Earth. Tupperwear is still a valued thing to own. Smoking indoors is generally allowed in small town bars despite being illegal. We had a rotary phone until circa 2003. Muscle cars are still everywhere. There's a typewriter 3 feet away from me as I'm typing this (and another in the room adjacent), and I enjoy the attention I give to my writing while using it. We hold an annual tie-dye event for free at our fourth of July party open to the neighborhood to this day. And we still use phones to call friends personally rather than post messages... These things have passed the test of time. Sometimes its better to keep things simple and grounded. People get ironically disconnected with global connectivity and forget the people around them.
Love this! I remember pretty much all of it. Your comments about the Pet Rock had me laughing. 😆
I remember the moon landing. Probably 50 people were in our game room all standing around the TV. I could only listen because I was 4 and was too short. I remember everyone’s excitement. I’m now 6’3” tall and very mindful to stand in the back. LOL
The phrase first came to the public audience in a U.S. television commercial for the Wendy's chain of hamburger restaurants in 1984.
You want one to really talk about.....try the action figures, assessories, and play sets of Big Jim and the Wolf Pack. Never seems to get mentioned
I never had any close calls or problems with my lawn darts. They were fun! The tips were not sharp.
e-mail is one of the technology that we are still using from 80’s until now 2024…
Get Wildroot Cream oil, Charlie
I was waiting and waiting but you never got to good old Consumers Distributing! Would you do a piece on that old 1970s/80s icon?
I've never used a phonebook. I would always call 411 directory assistance to get a phone number.
Apple did not invent the mp3 player which they call the iPod. They stole the idea and patent from Creative Labs who pioneered the mp3 player with their ZEN Player which is better the iPod
Unfortunately the private equity firm that bought Toys R Us left them with too much debt that they could not overcome
My childhood Kmart opened in 1980 and closed 10 years ago in December 2014 after 34 years of business. I miss Kmart. Kmart failed because they failed to update their stores and didn't keep up with technology. So they fell to Walmart & Target who were expanding across the country. Kmart used to have just under 3,000 stores nationwide. Eddie Lambert came in and ran both Kmart & Sears to the ground
We still used on call pagers in my office well into the 2000s. They finally replaced my pager with an iPhone 6.
Those drills in schools were a 50's thing
Everything I've seen here tells me life was a lot more fun and interactive in the 80s
Ah the days of inserting and removing 25 floppy disks to install Windows 3.11.
50 years from now, people will be mocking our iphones and electric cars.
I still have at least 100 VHS tapes and a player too !!
One problem with the Atari was that they intended to etch the TV screen which could not be fixed. When I was growing up, my father built a TV for the use of Atari games for us kids. My neighbors had a big wheel & one of the kids ran into my mail box post & toppled the post which was no big deal since I learned the mail box post was eaten away by termites. It was very funny when I tried to assure that I was not concerned about it.
I was 14 in 80' . I would give my very soul to go back
