Testing the Surecom SW-112 simplex handheld repeater while hiking at Providence Canyon, Georgia.
I went hiking to the beautiful Providence Canyon in Georgia and wanted to test the Surecom SW-112 simplex repeater (you can watch my video about the repeater) on this type of environment.
I use my hiking handheld the Baofeng UV9G with the Nagoya 771G antenna, and the Tidradio TD-H8 handheld connected to the repeater. As you will see it worked very good. I was surprised because the line of sight is very bad because of the elevation drop and the big stone walls. I set it up in my truck connected to the mobile antenna Midland MXTA26.
A very good set up when you are out with a group, your family, or just by yourself to improve the range of your radios or to test equipment.

SURECOM SR-112 Simplex repeater. CB, GMRS, HAM, handhelds.

A very simple simplex repeater to use with your handhelds. CB, GMRS, HAM, etc. A simplex repeater can be set up with a single handheld radio and operated from batteries. This makes it perfect for disaster response, home or campground use, and any place where radio range needs to be extended but the cost and complexity of a traditional repeater can’t be justified. Just remember a dummy load also has an SWR of 1:1. SWR is not a measure of antenna effectiveness and efficiency. Antennas that are shorter than 1/4 are less efficient than a 1/4 antenna. Even without the most efficient you will likely work someone.

    • @practicalgadgetsandstuff
      @practicalgadgetsandstuff 2 місяці тому

      SWR is precisely to see if the antenna is working fine and not sending electricity back into the radio. That and the fact that I can hit what I want to talk to, is good enough to tell me that the antenna is working fine in the real world and serving my purpose. Thanks for watching. By the way, the swr reading with a dummy load is null. Because... there is no antenna!

    • @practicalgadgetsandstuff
      @practicalgadgetsandstuff 2 місяці тому

      @attribute-4677 Agree. But it is not relevant because you are only measuring power. No antenna on the equation. Thanks!

    • @vladtepes481
      @vladtepes481 2 місяці тому

      @@practicalgadgetsandstuff I am trying to tell you that having an SWR of 1:1 is not sufficient information telling you that the antenna is good. Basically, any piece of wire will give 1:1 SWR at 450MHz when fed will 1000 ft of RG-174. There are more dimensions to the issue than just SWR. Admittedly your antenna is an OK antenna but probably not the best.

    • @practicalgadgetsandstuff
      @practicalgadgetsandstuff 2 місяці тому

      @@vladtepes481 yeah I know. But to my practical purposes if I can communicate with very good quality, have a very good range, and a good swr reading, it's a good antenna! I never said the best. And I don't need the best. Thanks!

    I just got the no:37 sheath from ottoza. Comparing to all my other leather products (sheaths holster belts wallets tool-bags ect) the leather smells and feels fake or not top grain. The leather doesn’t wet form well at all. Its super flexible and thin and the point on my esee5 has already stabbed through. Iv only had it for 4 days…. The snaps are terrible. I mean for 29$ you get a cool looking beginner grade sheath but i cant see it being practical in a hard use application like real world survival or bushcraft. I have two carl thomas leather sheaths that were the same price and they are solid bullet proof leather sheaths.

    Putting an antenna against a wall or having any obstacles near it will affect the antennas receive and transmission, with a ground plane that doesn't have a 360 around the antenna will make the antenna directional, the antenna you have is is for a vehicle but even if you mount it roof hight with clearance around you will find its performance much better, ideally a good home base antenna would be a Silver Rod mounted as high as possible on the roof of your home.

    Magnet antennas are great but you need something that will stick to the magnet strongly, groundplane doesn't really matter as much as getting something ferrous enough for the magnet to have a strong bond with. Otherwise you'll barely get any power out.

    Haha I saw your review on amazon. Nice that someone finally made a picture and video of this antenna. It was hard to find much details about it.

    I like that 51 inch telescope. I keep that one in backpack with me too, I have a cigar holder I use to keep it in as a case so it don't get bent but also use the 16 inch as well, it's really good when walking around so I don't accidentally bend telescope on anything. If you hook it up with new President Randy II handheld radio it increases the range even more than the other handhelds for some reason. Really good radio.

    That’s a good idea for ham radio operators too. Good job to get on the air.
