Gernge Quick Tips - Custom AOVs | Cinema 4D Redshift
This quick tip is an introduction to Custom AOVs in Redshift. Using the Store Color AOV Node, we can create A Render Pass out of pretty much any Node, Texture or Layer, which Can be used Later in Compositing. I demonstrate using Surface Imperfections, animated Maxon Noises, and Curvature & Round Corners to give 3D text an edge highlight.
This information should apply to Redshift in other DCCs, and the steps to use the Custom AOVs will depend on the compositing app you use.

This quick tip is an introduction to using User Data in Redshift, specifically Color User Data. There is a lot more to cover, so this is Part 1, where we cover Display Color, and a bit of Mograph Color. Mograph Color is powerful because it can be used to color objects randomly, but also as a form of data, so I show how to use it to offset the surface imperfections on each clone. User Data is av...

This quick tip introduces the RandomBitmaps OSL Node which is perfect for randomly scattering image textures. Using this OSL node is a very easy way to procedurally cover an object in sticker textures, as I demonstrate but that is far from the only way to apply this technique. The node can also be chained through multiple copies of itself, to add even more randomization. This information should...

Why do you have the same voice as HAL9000? haha
Do I need the Redshift Live-rendering active to see any updates I do to the triplanar-node? I have copy/pasted the code to my OSL node.. it all looks right with the parameters, but I can't see any updates to my texture when changing the scaling of my OSL-triplanar node? It doesn't update when doing Live-preview in Redshift either.
Holy Moley. Been a Redshift user for over 4 years and was unaware of this obviously crucial node! Thank you.
hey billy you got any secret weapon token paths?
Печально что это не идёт из коробки, это ужас
You the man.
in my case RS render view is black. also the materials are black. what is the problem?
anyway i can do this with the new node editor?
yep! recently used c4d 2024.4 + rs 3.5.24 for a client project and used this exact method to apply a logo
Great Content won a sub
Just like this png, I've redesigned 'FUI graphic' as a photoshop or illustration(0:44), and I'm wondering how bright blue neon colors can come out right away like you(0:47). Can this be implemented only as a hologram asset?
Is there a octane version

Hello Gernge, I've tried in C4D 2024.5 with Redshift 3.6 and it seems this OSL script has some issues, it's not working anymore.
That is a bummer to hear, I have not updated to those versions and also know nothing about actually writing or fixing the OSL code. I do know that there are more issues and incompatibilities when using OSL on Mac OS if that applies to you, not sure though, sorry!
@@gernge thanks, yes I'm on Mac. I think the only option is to send a ticket to Maxon, I haven't found a way to send a message on the github OSL page.
Very very useful tip, saved me a headache, thanks a lot
glad it helped you!!
Very nice trick! When I do back and forth from photoshop, it take "sometimes" minutes to reload the updated image...even when pressing the reload image in redhsift several times, do you have a idea why^
my trick to 'force' reload newly updated textures is to raise the gamma 1 click on the Redshift texture node then click it back to it's default value. this works more reliably for me than the actual reload button. see if that works for you
Do you have a quicktip/tutorial on how you enhance microchips? I'd love to see you you do this.
Thank you!
Hello ! I am trying this tutorial with Reshift (3.5.13) on Maya (2022) and it doesn' t work..
unfortunately i do not use RS for maya and cant i debug what's not working either, sorry about that! you may be able to get assistance in the RS community discord server if you try asking there
love it! Vert clear!
the round edges trick to get the bevel in a custom AOV is a gem.
Awesome, really useful thank you!
What is your default render preset?
it's in my other video from this series, link here: ua-cam.com/video/s5ElfI1q8uU/v-deo.html
I've been scouring the internet... do you know if there's a way to create an AOV for post-effects in Redshift? I've seen several workarounds that seem to work, but no true post-effects AOV...
My man
Fantastic video, thanks for sharing.
amazing tutorial bruh, keep it up
Is this similar to how unreal does Parallax mapping? Can you fake depth / volume for spaces on just planar objects with this? Also does this just replace displacement, or do they fight each other due to how they work?
Simple and to the point! Finally getting back into all these quick tips!
great tips! thanks for sharing, do you have a discord at all?
I'm keen for Pt 2!!! 😍 XO
Hi thanks for sharing this, I'm having a simple issue is that when I use the standard material technique but when I changed the emission of the shader node. the PNG layer doesn't emit but the white color layer instead. How could I make my PNG texture emit but not the white color? Thanks in advance.
Is this relevant with the newer node system, it looks alot more like octane.
still relevant! OSL works in the newer nodes system, it is just a UI update, so my reasons for preferring this OSL triplanar node over the built-in triplanar are valid there too!
You worked on Arcane? That's insane! Thanks for the very clear and cut tip videos. They help alot per project. Also! Wondering how the shot with the houses on the hills are done? Is it just redshift/C4D? Love it.
The project that looks like Arcane was Worlds 2021, which announced Arcane and used some of the same assets. More info on my website, along with full breakdowns & links for each project in my reel! But thank you for the kind comment about my quick tip tutorials, I really appreciate it
Hey dude. I’d love to see some of the plugins /scripts etc that you use. Thanks.
I can add it to my ideas list, in case I do another round of quick tips, thank you!!
Can we save that node in the Asset browser? That will be way more handy than every time copy and pasting the code.
What Maxon lacks is the willingness to do things right. Here we have an example.
Nice one! Can you also list your version of redshift, c4d version and even your drivers?
thank you! to answer, the specific RS version used is shown in every clip during the intro title card. C4D R21 as shown at the top bar of the program, and I use 497.29 Game Driver
I've tried in C4D 2024.2 with Redshift 3.5.22 and it seems this OSL script has some issues, it's not working anymore.
What about deep output can make a video about how to render deep exr and all
Very good tutorial ! Very useful ! Is this method working also with displacement ?
This is super cool! I was always wondering how to get that effect on pokemon or baseball cards in 3D. Thanks for this!
it should work really well for that use! you're very welcome
How do you move the car on a road that is not at sea level? I need to put my car on a kind of bridge highway but when I move the rig the car stays in place in the Y and the rig is messing up. Would you have any solution to move the whole rig vertically?
what script you used , when you hit v show layout switch
they are scripts i made myself! i made vimeo tutorials a few years ago covering how to make them but have been meaning to update them for youtube quick tip videos
thanks Gernge,i look through your tutorials, t helped me a lot , make my life easier :p@@gernge
Thank you for this technique. I'm using it to break up some materials I've made in Substance and it works nicely.
Hey Billy. I am currently rigging a car as well and in the past Ive used this same exact rig. This time im also trying out the car rig in C4D from the Character menu. I've noticed with both rigs that the rotation of the wheels seems to be too fast when there's curves in the animation or when using align to spline. If you love the car slowly using the position gizmo it rotates okay. Is this more of a visual thing that makes me think the wheels are rotating too fast? Or what do you think? I'm pretty sure the rigs are applied correctly but wanted to hear your thoughts
Hey Jesus, I was experimenting with that rig a few days ago and faced the exact same issue. If we align to spline the car, there are kind of problems in the curved part of the road. Also we have to manually keyframe the wheels steering because obviously the wheels do not stay straight when the car turns in real life. When wheels steer there is also a problem with the rotation speed that looks off with the road. I think it is due to how the rig is created, and especially the math in Xpresso. I havent find a solution yet. If you find one or if you find a better rig, please update your comment, i am curious :)
@@laeternaml after a few tries I ended up using the rig that comes with C4D under the character tab. It's a bit more involved but it also has a ton more options AND the steering responds automatically to the car turning when it is on a spline. Definitely give that one a try. I still feel like the wheels rotate a but too fast but with motion blur it goes unnoticed
@@j.ssuarez thanks for the feedback! The auto steering with a spline seems a great feature, i didn’t know. Im sure this still due to the math used for the calculation of the rotation of the wheels, I guess it is very difficult to calculate accurately depending on the angles of the curves. But yes if the car is not driving slowly it may be not so visible. I didnt want to use the built in c4d rig because I found the component setting (with the colored dots) a bit complex and confusing to setup. I’ll give it a second try then 👌🏻
thanks a lot!
thanks very helpfull
Hey when I plug the vector change range into the scale on my normal map it gives the material a spherical mapping effect like it’s stretched? Any idea where I’ve gone wrong?
underrated
Thank you giving such a great tutorial... So much better than the built-in rig in C4D !
Thanks a lot! exactly what I was looking for.
