Tiny Bougainvillea Bonsai. Wiring and Pruning Bougainvillea Bonsai cascading style. Beginner Bonsai
Instagram: @HerbandRootsGardening
Bougainvillea is an evergreen shrub known for brilliant shows of prolific blooms.
There are varieties with red, pink, orange, yellow, white bracts. The flowers appear in the middle of the bracts or leaves that have changed color. Bougainvillea leaves are oval and are positioned in an alternate pattern. The bark is beige-grey and with age it gets more texture and character.
The species is native to South America. Bougainvilleas are fast growing, tolerate pruning very well and are well suited for most bonsai styles. As they are subtropical plants, they can't endure frost and need temperatures around 50° F - 59° F / 10° C - 15° C in winter.
Bougainvillea needs full sun and high temperatures for producing flowers. In Fall in colder climates, the tree should be placed in a cool room with sufficient light (or under grow lights) and at temperatures not below 50°F / 10° C and best not over 59° F / 15° C.
Bougainvillea prefers a pH value of 6 to 6.5. I use a liquid fertilizer every week during the growing season and every couple of weeks in winter.
For pruning and wiring, cut the shoots after flowering, leaving two leaves on each and prune twigs and branches in autumn or winter. The bougainvillea can bud from old wood after hard pruning. If you want the tree to flower, don't pinch and trim it too much in summer. Those heal over slowly. Wiring is possible on young shoots and twigs but older branches are very stiff and break easily.
Repot smaller bougainvilleas every two or three years. Larger specimens can be repotted every three to five years. A well-draining standard soil mix is fine for this species. The roots of the bougainvillea are yellow, thin and delicate. Take good care not to tear off the roots when you remove the root ball from the pot! Untangle the roots tenderly and don't use the root rake with force. Root pruning is tolerated well.

When plants are grown indoors or in other low light situations, they become elognated. This is called etioliation. This is elongation of the stem as the plant stretches upward to catch more light. The simple solution is to move the plant to brighter light like a southern exposure or higher intensity artificial lights. But this still leaves that leggy party. Fortunately, leggy succulent plants c...

You’re lighting terrible
You dont even have to cut the vines off. Just plant a node from the vine right into the pot and it will root into the soil.
do you grow your rosemary indoors?
Update?
Whats the specie?
What is turpus,?
Oh man, im pretty sad you stopped uploading 😢
Just my luck I find these videos when the guy had stopped recording them 3 years ago
I hope you saved those roots and watered them. Plants don’t have to have leaves to propagate, guys.
Lemon water for hard water.
What is the huge background sound?
You had my kitten totally entertained
Please could you tell me what you used in the bottom the pot for
Thanks
I hate bonsai. I really hate it when they are wired. Nice plant though before your started with the zip ties.
Any update on how this gardenia forest is going?
Best video on the subject! Thanks! Found this tree at the Toronto Botanical Garden and got some seeds, but lost them. Recently I was gifted a bunch of pods and just started the process. I will plant some in my property but I want to try to training it as bonsai as well. How your trees are doing? It would be nice to have an update!
This video taught me so much! Your voice is also so easy to listen to. Hard to find sometimes in the plant video world lol! New sub 😊
Great video and content. Glad I just subscribed. You're a handsome and intelligent guy. Thanks.
If you’re still growing out jades and you haven’t discovered larger pots you will get faster growth in a larger pot. I’ve been growing 5 to 10’ jades but I only down size the pot when I’m satisfied with max growth.
Grow it out bro. Put it in the open ground preferably in good soil full sun and let it grow out there largely untouched another ten years or so, before even thinking about starting the refinement stage. And in that time, learn learn learn. )) Then another 5-10 years you might have a bonsai, a nice one too. Leave it an a tiny pot and keep fidlling with it and 100 years later itd still be a twig in a pot. I knowit can be hard starting out but, discipline yourself brother and youll be reewarded. )) Id recommend getting a more advanced or "finished" looking bonsai or two (or more idk) if you can afford it, to look at and fiddle with and show off and all that. Then as you orogress and learn you wont be so tempted to mess with and hack up all your tress that are still in the development stage (as opposed to refinement stage. ) Which will be the vast majority of your plants. Maybe some more advanced nursery junipers or aomething too that are closer to refinement atage and can get practise on and get something that looks like a bonsai quick. Or practice wiring and stuff with branches that have been cut off a larger reee. Anyway just my two cents. Good luck bro. I bet youll like and be real good at it if atick wit it....i can tell. :)
oh man, this propagating is about identical to doing Jasmines. i pop em right into a small pot after some powdered hormone....not entirely sure im happy with it. i think i'd like to try liquid
Question: Does the flower have to die before it shoots out pups?
Bromeliads only use roots for anchoring themselves to other structures. All the moisture is absorbed through the center cup structure. You have to keep water in it at all times. Can't let it remain dry, even if it's in moist soil. It's nice to mount them on wood or bark to make attractive wall decor. Great video
Chào bạn ❤
That's why I ❤ pothos. Easiest plants to grow!
I'm growing rosemary from seed, I don't think it's hard to grow, some techniques, a seed heat mat and patience, I put 10 seeds in some regular potting mix and 3 of the 10 sprouted in 2weeks, after day 30growth starts to pick up
Looks nice but I would have left them to grow in the deeper pot for another few years to get a thicker trunk faster. 😃
Thanks for the video Growmie..best Bromeliad tutorial on The Tube
Hi, did you have it under grow lights, just asking cause it is kind of leggy?? Did you put any fertilizer?
I am trying to bonsai my Gorizia flowering Rosemary. Trying to wire it for a cascade tree. Hopefully it will work
I have a beautiful gigantic kentucky coffee tree across the street from my house and I am currentlyngetting ready to start the bonsai process. How are yours after 6 years?
What is keiki paste?
I am growing from inside with very little light. How much light does it need and what can I do to help the lighting. Thank you.
Hey!!! Please tell me what was that kinda fuzzy looking little purple plant?! From like 5:50-6.00 minutes in. That plant! What iissss that?! It's beeeeautiful!!😲😍
I've heard them called Purple Passion Plant and Purple Velvet Plant. Genus and species Gynura Aurantiaca.
Will it grow another flower spike after you remove that one ?? I’m new and I have my first Bromeliad but one flower spike is pink but for some reason leaning over 😢
So if you cut the flower will it bloom more or is that it ??
I’m sad. Mine just died after it flowered. 😢
It was shot very well!
Tbh Buddy said "No, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about"
Looks great, just got our first Bonsai, super excited to learn all about their care.
Did they ever flower? 😊
I didn't even know what Bromeliads were til a few days ago! haha! I saw them in a grocery store and got one. After researching them, I wnet back for more and found one just like the one you have here, though it's not dying back at all yet. BUT- it already had a flowering pup on it! So I got a free plant with that one! I separated it and potted it up. It's doing well! I did have to prune off damaged leaves because grocery stores never take care of their plants. It doesn't seem to have stress the plants at all, which I was worried about. I love this video and will subscribe. I know I'm 4 years late seeing this...haha!
did you grow this indoors?
Great video from beginning to end for propagation. Would love to see how your pups are doing. May have flowered by now but just curious.... (edit) just saw your link about their progress. Thx for getting 'er done.
You water the soil when transplanting ?
I'm not impressed , you had a beautiful plant to start with and you hacked it because of shelf space? 😵
I did the other way around…..spreading the branch away from the main trunk. And repotting , I would have opted to tie it down as this plant tends to have a heavy canopy. Just my own way…
My portulaca afra leaves always fall 😅
If one paints the pot, will that deter the white stuff from coming back?
Hes so fine omg i cant pay attention
