Horizontal Drill - Fantastic way to feel all of the proper motion at the bottom of the swing.
This is one of the best drills to feel what your body and arms should be doing at the bottom of the swing. Another NO BALL drill.

    Love the stupid little drill. Did it for 3 weeks without the ball, a 100 times a day. Now do it with the ball 100 times everday. It's addictive. Used to be a 7 handicap in my 40's. Quit playing. Started back in my sixties. Shooting 110 to 99. This drill is fantastic, bring back the feels i had, when 7 handicap. Can't wait for spring to see how i do. Have a Spornia net in my living room, planning to do stupid little drill all winter long.

    Excellent video, Sir. Long retired, old pro here. Fed up with all the twaddle on UA-cam about shaft lean, compression, using the ground, squaring the club face, holding the face square, delaying release etc. Your simple drill does away with all that, the club releases itself, it squares itself at impact, it is designed to do that with the centrifugal effect as you demonstrate. This is basic physics, the golf swing is a flail. The big difference between the modern players and the old guys like Jones, Locke, Hogan is that the modern guys hit the ball harder because they can! The old guys (and me) could not do that with tiny persimmon heads. It's always a flail.

    • @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy
      @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy 10 годин тому

      I agree. Too many pros are making the swing too complicated. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

  • @OldProGolf

    Excellent advice. Most of the old guys started back like this - Vardon, Hagen, Bobby Jones etc. The golf swing is a flail, even in the "modern" swing. Learn the flail first then build from there.

    • @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy
      @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy 19 днів тому

      Good question. Drills are always meant to be exaggerated. Once you can do this drill and feels ridiculously easy... move on to hitting some balls with just slightly less of a handle drag on the takeaway. Eventually, it should become a bit like swinging a bat or throwing a ball... we've done it so many times it just feels simple. For most of my students we move from this right into half swing punch shots. I've got a video named "best ball striking drill" You can watch that.. Thanks for the question and for watching.

    Make sure you push off? Do you only do the drill with one hand? I find it much harder to do drills and drill with both hands on the club.

    • @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy
      @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy 19 днів тому

      Not sure what you mean by "push off". The proper swing has weight transfer just before the downswing begins and then hip rotation. Many of my students struggle to do this drill with both hands at first. Spend some time with just your trail arm (right arm for right handed) and get the loose sloppy feel with that first. Look at the 10 secs mark of this video and try to emulate that. Once that feels simple... move to both arms. Thanks for watching.

  • @dry509
    @dry509 19 днів тому

    I hit behind the ball constantly or to a lesser extent top it. Does this help with this.

    • @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy
      @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy 19 днів тому

      Hitting behind the ball and topping the ball are both symptoms of bad sequence. If you video your swing, face on, I would bet that you would see the club extending early on the downswing. That's almost always due to a lack of lower body movement early in the downswing. This drill is exaggerated to help us feel the lower body get engaged early on the downswing and the arms and specifically the wrists release much later. I'll put up a short video to illustrate the downswing positions that all elite players have. Thanks for watching.

    I can attest to the fact that this “stupid little drill” works wonders! I have spent everyday practicing this drill since you posted it two weeks ago. I spend about 45 minutes a day doing the drill. On some nice days here in central PA I have been able to hit some balls. My ball flight and contact has improved 100%! I am so much more relaxed and try to make every swing feel like a practice swing. I have been doing the drill with 5 iron through SW. I have not attempted my driver or woods yet. Everyone should give this drill an honest try. I wish this was shown to me years ago! Thanks, again, for teaching this!

    I think this drill works because... This drill will help you shift your weight to your left foot on the final hinge in the backswing, which is hard to do. This drill will help you get the feeling. Notice when you throw a ball you shift your weight just when your throwing arm stops not when your arm starts to go forward. I think we need to do this in the golf swing.

    • @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy

    I struggled for a couple years to find my swing. The more I focused the worse I got. Stumbled on your video and practiced the drill for about five days without golfing. The results were like night and day. I found my swing again! From driver to wedge, all were much better. The only thing that is interesting is I hit the ball best when I feel as if I am being very loose on the backswing and the top of the handle is leading the way. Just like the drill. When I can do that, and make a smooth transition, the result is pure. Thank you!

    This is the BEST drill I have every done! I found this a week ago and have been doing it everyday for about an hour. Yesterday I hit 40 balls with my PW and have never hit the ball better! Solid contact, small draw, and right on target. Practicing without a ball is key because I didn't worry about the outcome. This drill has taught me to be soft, and relaxed in my swing. You were right when you said this will fix everything. Do I do the same with my driver and woods or do I need to do anything different? Thanks so much for this!

    • @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy
      @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy Місяць тому

      Thanks for the feedback and good question. Sequence is the same for every club in the bag. (except putting and certain chips shots) however, ball position, and weight distribution changes as the clubs get longer. Watch my "Drivers vs Irons" video. That will help you. Hard for me to convince many students to practice without a ball. The original feedback for most people needs to be about the proper sequence (movement) of a swing. I need a camera for that... not a golf ball.

    How does this help your club face be square at impact. If you are not hitting a ball you surely can't tell. And a square clubface is the single most important thing. You can havr the most beautiful swing in the world but it's not going straight if the clubface is not square

    • @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy
      @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy Місяць тому

      See 4:35 of the video. Watch my "2 simple things" video and combine that info with this and you can build a swing that has everything that every elite player has. Consistency requires 2 things, a square face and good angle of attack. Face angle combined with club path give us direction. Impact angle gives us consistent contact. The absolute only way to accomplish both of those consistently, is to learn proper sequence and also learn how to square the face either on the backswing or early on the downswing. Thanks for the comment.

    This is rather like something I discovered recently after following the instruction for years of: 'stop flipping!' That instruction causes you to be too rigid with your wrists at impact, causing erratic shots. When you make a point of deliberately keeping your wrists soft at impact it makes for relaxed hitting and more repetitive, accurate shots.

    • @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy
      @SouthernUtahGolfAcademy Місяць тому

      I agree. I have a lot of drills for students to delay the release. But, the risk is that they then start to hold off the release artificially, which is really bad. When swinging a bat, we have a significant wrist release. It's just late because it happens after most of the body rotation. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
