The ferry is often the start and the end of an adventure, so why not make it one itself?
Farewell To The Hebridean Isles
With the arrival of new vessels on the horizon for the Calmac network sadly this of course leads to the departure of some loved favourites, and sadly it as Hebridean Isles that is the first to go. After her withdrawal was announced I had planned to get one last sailing on her on her longest served route from Kennacraig to Islay, however after these plans got foiled thanks to the ever lasting problems with the Caledonian Isles and with Isle of Arran having to go for overhaul Hebridean Isles was moved from Islay to Arran meaning it was a hastily planned trip down to Troon for one last sailing on her.
As a final sailing goes it couldn't have been better, joined by many enthusiasts also wanting one last sail on her and with the sun setting over Arran on the return journey it was a fantastic way for bidding farewell to such a well loved vessel.
Thank you for the service, Heb Isles, and thank you for watching!

With the announcement of the withdrawal and subsequent scrapping of MV Hebridean Isles I decided that now was a good time to book a trip to Islay to get a farewell sail on her before retirement. However as you can probably tell this plan ended before it began as due to the ongoing issues at Arran and the Isle of Arran needing its overhaul Hebridean Isles had been withdrawn from Islay and moved ...
The Return of MV Loch Shira
Переглядів 5953 місяці тому
After 4 months out of service with ramp issues the resident Cumbrae vessel Loch Shira has returned, after a period of disruption on the service with 6 vessels covering for the Shira over her absence. The return is certainly welcome as during weekends waiting times for the service often was hours due to smaller vessels operating. Thankfully now that looks to be in the past with the large Loch Sh...

With disruption on the Clyde being a massive issue this Summer season for the Calmac network with problems with Caledonian Isles and Loch Shira one service on the Clyde that remained pretty problem free is the Wemyss Bay to Rothesay service. As a result I decided to take a trip over to Bute and back on both the resident ferries for the run, heading over on MV Argyle before returning on MV Bute....

With the Calmac network once again being thrown into disarray this time thanks to metal work problems with the MV Caledonian Isles putting her out of service long term the service to Arran is down a bit part of its capacity. With the sun beaming down on the Clyde it was a lovely day for some sailing and Gourock was the location. Having arrived we sailed over to Kilcreggan on the MV Chieftain and after an hour ashore sailed back over to Gourock where the two Dunoon ferries changed over allowing us to see all 3 Gourock based boats at the same time. Here we boarded MV Argyll Flyer for a sailing to Dunoon before headin...

With Loch Shira still out of action with ramp issues the ferries operating between Largs and Cumbrae have changed since the last time I visited the island! Gone are the Isle of Cumbrae as she headed back to her route of Portavadie to Tarbert and the Loch Riddon, which has been sent up to Tobermory to cover the route over to Kilchoan in place of the Loch Tarbert which has now arrived on the Larg...

With regular Cumbrae ferry MV Loch Shira out of action thanks to ramp issues it was left to another collection of smaller ferries to take over the mantle and look after the Cumbrae service. With the nights drawing in a nice November day was not to be turned down so a trip across to Bute for the day was on the cards. Having made my way down to Wemyss Bay I boarded the MV Bute for the sailing over to Rothesay. With the resident Cumbrae ferry MV Loch Shira suffering from some technical issues it was a surprise to many who was chosen to cover on her behalf, as the resident Skye ferry MV Loch Fyne was brought in. Operating during the summer on the Mallaig to Armadale service the Loch Fyne during this period has her ramps stowed in a way she cannot use slipways as the Mallaig service utilises linkspans a...

MV Loch Frisa- Calmac's Newest Ship!
It's a shame why any of the vessels can't use the bow at Troon.
Great to see another video from you once again, and seeing MV Hebridean Isles operating from Troon ferry terminal. Which just so happens to be my home town.
Why do they turn her around?
@@trr9230 She berths into Mallaig bow first so turns around to head forward out to sea
@CWShipping but she's a double-ender?
@ I believe she can operate in both directions, however she tends to always head bow first where there is the protection of the bow visor whereas her stern doesn’t have this.
Will you be doing any more videos whilst you're in Orkney?
@@aiden3170 Unfortunately not on this occasion, I was just over there for work so didn’t have time to explore, hopefully in the future however!
Oh I see, You'll definitely have to come back outside of work, there's lots of different routes and ferries here as I'm sure you know. Scrabster to Stromness on the Hamnavoe is a must.
How these Captains manage to move these massive ferries into such small spaces, leaves me speechless, and that in itself is a miracle indeed! (I'm never quiet!). I realise that there are much larger vessels sailing in the oceans, but they are not taking their craft into such small areas, with tragic reefs around the coasts of the Hebrides! I'll miss LOTI when she is no longer in service, but hope that Calmac ensure they have enough vessels to cover in the future! Hebridean Isles just shows what can happen to a firm like Calmac trying to cover routes with fewer vessels, so LOTI being able to cover most routes makes her valuable! .Tich.
Thanks for this great video, l have Greatly enjoyed it also great to see the bows going up and down also the stern ramp going up and down, they have come a long way since they used to use 2 planks for cars coming off the ferrys and going on to the ferrys - Great how things have changed over the years.
I was on her on the Arran run the other day It was great fun to be on her the food on her was fantastic 100%. The only thing I was disappointed in was the gangway at Brodick didn't fit her I love the way the gangway design joined on with the ferry terminal. It's another fantastic video you have taken.
@@scottbraid443 Thank you glad you enjoyed the video and your sailing!
Potential routes for MV Finlaggin could be the Oban-Colonsay & Port Askaig route as that would allow MV Clansman to do extra Oban-Coll and Tiree sailings. She could also be a second vessel for the Mull service running alongside MV Caledonian Isles once the new Arran ferries entered service, or lastly she could be a second vessel on the Ullapool-Stornoway route alongside MV Loch Seaforth. If there's enough demand for more sailings. Great video once again btw 👍
@@Scottish_Transport_Explorer Thank you! I’ve thought she could become the designated Colonsay vessel with additional Craignure sailings alongside Caley Isles, which would give Clansman and Hebrides (who I reckon will be moved to Oban) to cover Coll, Tiree and Barra
VERY impressive berthing Manoeuvere , i was once on a boat which landed at Coll with what came to be known as the dull thud manoeuvere, not calmac I hasten to add, and the skipper was sober as well
A once potential future in the making since Hebrides was speculated to have been earmarked for transfer to Oban to serve as running mate to Isle of Mull back when Glen Rosa was still her intended replacement. With Caledonian Isles now apparently set to outright replace Isle of Mull next year, I'm wondering if she's now destined for the Barra run since Isle of Lewis is also on the chopping block.
Very weird to see her away from the uig triangle. For a minute when I saw the photo of the Hebrides I was thinking that it was the clansman 😅 great video !
@@AndrewFaulds-x9u Thank you! Yeah was a rarity for her to be serving out of Oban, if memory serves me correctly she had just returned from her overhaul and was on her way back up to Uig but stopped over to help out in Oban
lol down the line a few weeks calay isles comes back to do arran and the day she comes back the next day her and the other boat are way lol
the loch portain is just so special
She's an interesting vessel that's for sure, one that doesn't often get the credit she deserves.
good music
Thank you!
In my opinion these 2 ferries are the best ferrys on the Clyde there is plenty of room in the sitting area, & many other goodies around the ship, I've been on these 2 ferries quite a lot, - Well done to whoever built them .
Both Bute and Argyle were built By Remontowa in Gdańsk, Poland.
They both are very reliable and have served Bute well since their introduction. A good example of vessels custom built for a route with the demands and capacity that are required.
Hey CW, I noticed the MV Loch shira returned back to her original route with new ramps. It'll be interesting to see if you make a video on her next time you visit.
Hey, yeah I've notices she's back in action, will hopefully get a sailing on her next time I'm down in Largs!
Is this not a small boat for this route?
I'm not sure but isn't the MV clansman the sister ferry to the MV hebrides?
You're correct, MV Clansman, built in 1998, is the younger sister to the MV Hebrides which was built in the year 2000.
Is The Isle of Cumbrae Not a small vessel for doing the Tarbert-Portavarde Route?
I dont think they do this diversion anymore I dont think am I right in saying?
yes, i think it is only done on special occasions
Great to see 2 ferries giving pleasure to hundreds of people throughout the year, - I say well done to these 2 ferries & there captains.
Great video once again!!
Thank you!
Thank you keep it up,live in vancouver but born in scotland used to miillport in summer...good times!
Its strange how it can do Mallaig to armadale with no catering but, when courisk is on it has a cafe open.
17:40 do Pentland Ferries always issue their safety briefs from Transylvania?
How many people actually got off at Castlebay and how many people did they pick up from there? Great video btw
Thank you! I’m not sure, if I recall there was a few cars and passengers that got on and off, not quite as busy as the usual Isle of Lewis sailings that’s for sure though!
Next time use a tripod or better equipment. No swell but still queasy before half time.
Planing on doing this hopefully in June onboard MV Heabdeen isles, and i am curious on how long was the Journey was from Kennacraig to Oban? Great video btw 😄👍
Thank you glad you enjoyed it! It’s a great sailing especially if you get the weather, we left Kennacraig at 0945 and got into Oban around 4pm, so roughly 6 hours, but the time does fly by with amazing scenery!
Ironically 3years later still the same case only ioc is the main this time
Karma im an ex rn stoker applied and some guy who worked for the companies, wee lassie got the job
When I was on Loch Bhrusda other day the crew made it clear that they didn't like the route they where shouting and bawling at cars drivers and I overheard them on there walkie-talkie asking if they could lay her up and the staff that where colleting the tickets said they couldn't because they had a 17 meter campervan coming on there faces where tripling them.
That’s not so good, they did tie her up after the sailing from Cumbrae for a bit before she left for Campbeltown.
I noticed the Loch riddon changed its safety announcement..?
Yeah I think they are in the process of changing all of them across the fleet to the new one
@@CWShippingI hope they don't change the Loch shira one, 😕
Never in the history of the company has any Calmac employee ever worked faster than a glacial pace.
Haha the ferry chorus of car alarms, I only did it the once and then after that haven’t bothered locking the vehicle since. There seems to be a lot of people complain about CalMac but I can honestly say every time I have travelled with them they have been great, the staff always seem helpful and the smaller vessels the staff are chatty too which for a geek like me makes the trip.
It has an extended exhaust on the one side? (20:40)
Thank goodness Andrew Banks chartered his ship, the MV Alfred to CMAL/CalMac. This ferry has saved the island of Arran’s economy. Maybe if the owners of CalMac had listened to John Rose (founder of Western Ferries) and chartered the MV Highland Seabird 40+ years ago, we would not be in such a mess). As for vested interest groups that are frightened of MV Alfred and putting about the lie that Pentland Ferries are making millions. The charter INCLUDES FUEL AND CREW COSTS. For those with the hidden agendas, maybe declare this fact next time you try and do down this valiant effort to help Islanders. Just out of interest, does anyone care to hazard a factual assessment of how much the MV Alfred fuel bill is for a full year? Also for fairness, how much fuel (in pound notes) does the MV Caledonian Isles go through each year? Whatever else, a HUGE round of thanks to Andrew Banks (and his brilliant Orcadian crew) at Pentland Ferries for saving the Arran economy. God help the other islands on the West Coast.
The majority of crew on the Alfred are from the West coast, very few Orcadians on it- most are on the Pentalina.
Ehi. What was your overall feel of the trip? Would you recommend it? Would you do it again? Weren't you tempted to just put a foot on Tiree, Coll and Barra to say you'd been there? 😂 I'm headed up in April and thinking of doing just this. Thanks for giving me an idea of the journey!
Yes its quiet no vibration, but found it an awfull ferry. Not enough toilets, poxy coffee machine that didnt work. Very cramped passenger lounge
Why can't Calmac adopt to ship-locking linkspans? The fifties wanted thier mooring lines back
Beautiful. My dream is to go on CalMac ferries. I love ships . I’m sadly very sick as I’ve just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, so hopefully I will be able to get my dream sometime. Kästien
Worst meal I've eaten on a ferry, don't know who prepared it. maybe the engineer or someone with no cooking ability or worse than mine, a difficult standard to surpass.
Fantastic video with brill soundtrack
Great video cheers
I find it very strange why there was a picture of Lord of The Isle and Waverley Inside her lounge. Instead of Loch Fyne and Waverley.
Is this Iran? It looks like winter.
No it`s Arran of the west of Scotland, Iran is in North Africa near Iraq. And it`s a good Scottish summer.
Not fan of her and she not compatible for a lot of linkspans and think they would be better off buying a 2nd hand boat with a bow and stern ramp.
She has done the job well though. Remember, the boat was designed for the run from Gills Bay to St Margaret's Hope, it wasn't designed to be used at different berths. The fact she is very beamy at 22m affects this too. The system works well, few vehicles have to reverse on. It is far cheaper to run and to be fair, do vessels really require bars and restaurants for sailings taking less than an hour?
Long long boring boring boring boring boring absolutely mind numbingly BORING
