Kayak Fishing NewPort Coast Kelp - Calico, Sheephead, Barracuda
Best Saltwater Reel for Light Coastal Fishing

Todays Info
I have had Corona Del Mar and beaches south of there on my radar for a while but have never gotten around to it. Today I had the opportunity to get out so made Newport Harbor my jumping point. I had high hopes to load up with live bait but as has happened in the past, the barge was not in place yet. Fortunately I had a plan B and was ready with a Sabiki and some shrimp for just such an event. I had heard there was a lot of kelp in the area south of Corona Del Mar but was happy to see there is a ton of it. So my hopes for Sheephead was on the rise. As it turned out I used up a good hour of peak fishing time trying to catch bait as there was only about an hour and a half of tide movement left after I launched. Once the water stopped moving so did the bite. It was a nice day of fishing in any case and a beautiful stretch of coastline to admire.

Fillet A Fish. I caught this Blue Fish kayak fishing around Cambria, CA. Filleting a fish definitely takes some practice and is a bit of an art. Bottom line, its not too hard but takes a couple of practice rounds to get good. The Three most important things when filleting a fish are: 1. Practice 2. A good fillet knife. For harbor fishing I would recommend NewPort harbor. It has the best fishing other than San Diego Bay in my opinion. For ocean fishing Dana Point is pretty good. Just use shrimp in the kelp around the red buoy

      Drifting around the rocky areas and the kelp with live bait produced some bass and sculpin. You can get a scoop at the mouth of the harbor for $20. The last time I was there I caught a few bass and a sheephead using shrimp near the bottom while tied up to the kelp. Have fun and let me know how it goes!

    • @thekayaklaunch
      @thekayaklaunch 2 місяці тому

      Basically you need a Johnson 350-500gph bilge pump (or any mfr). A reverse flow valve from Home Depot (this helps keep the pump primed), the dog food container (or whatever you use to hold the water) and the various hoses and connectors to connect it all up. Some use an outboard gas tank prime bulb to suck in water and get the pump primed with water before you start the pump.

      @thekayaklaunch 2 місяці тому

      Thanks. I started out with one but I must have chosen a poor quality item as it fell apart on me. I removed the primer. Now I just just use a portable short hose inside the tank and give a quick 'suck', to get a little water started up the bilge. lol. After that I dont usually have to prime again.

    • @thekayaklaunch
      @thekayaklaunch 3 місяці тому

      'more' noise is kind of vague :) More than what? If you mean being close beside me instead of up front or back on the stern, I would say yes. Its a bit noisie being right next to me especially as the shaft is not super long and does not allow the drive prop to be deep in the water. So you get a fair bit of prop noise. One way to tell the difference between a halibut and a flounder is by looking at their body shape and size. Halibut have an elongated, diamond-shaped body with pointed dorsal and anal fins, while flounder have a short and rounded body with flat or rounded tails. Halibut are also much larger than flounder generally speaking

    @Knudsenrunning thats not good. So its a wide spread thing I guess. Hopefully someone will come up with a good trick to keep us from having to do that ever couple of trips. My worry is I with eventually wear out the cable/string by having to re-tighten the screw many times.

  • @QuestFishingAdventures
    @QuestFishingAdventures 11 місяців тому

    I adjust those rudder cables every couple times out. I also replaced the standard fins with the turbo ones and replaced that steering handle and rudder with Berley Pro's. It tracks a lot better so I can hands free fish when Salmon fishing. I think those cables stretch or the material reacts to temperature/humidity because I adjust every couple trips. Replacing that plastic handle with a heavier aluminum makes a difference. I've probably made no less than 25 modifications or upgrades on my 2020 Compass.
