Typing on a 1909 Smith Premier Model 10-A Typewriter
This relic resembles a truly fascinating era of engineering. Very few mechanical components resemble the common-place design found in the inner workings of the stereo-type.
Alas, as I feared the flat feedrollers do pose a problem and will be a chore to replace. We'll get there. And the neat but problematic ribbon-threading keepa stalling the carriage. A reason that design didn't fly.
I love it, though.

I am incredibly proud to say that after 15 years of hunting, I have finally found an Underwood No.1 typewriter. The first commercially successful typewriter. Worthy of a proper restoration! I realize there are more than 4-5 machines out there as I stated in the video, but a rare bird none-the-less!!

Such a fascinatingly transitional machine--reminds me of the Remington 10, in that it clings to certain 19th-century sensibilities while succumbing to the inevitable frontstrike mechanism. Having seen typing samples in your other videos, it's also interesting to see how you adapt to this, both with the keyboard being dual and not having the usual staggering of the keys (would love to see you try a Molle, with its perfectly orthogonal grid of keys). Thanks for posting!

I have that same typewriter with the green keys and grey mottled paint. But it sure doesn't work like it used to. It often skips a key when you're typing and you have to keep backspacing to replace missed letters, very frustrating. Any idea how to fix that?

I was the only boy in my high school typing class in the late 60s here in Texas, and we learned on Royal 440 typewriters before I graduated. I did 122 words per minute on a 15 minute time test without errors on a 440 so it has always had a soft spot in my heart.

Marvelous! The decals on any early Underwood are so fragile and vulnerable, and it's wonderful to see one with so much of the pinstriping still intact (it's also quite difficult to find early Royal 10s with all their pinstriping), as well as the original Wagner label on the back. Aside from being visually pleasing, these little touches added so much dignity to the machine. Looking forward to your in-depth comparison of the mechanicals. Thanks for posting.

Interesting machine and history. I could not see the breaks you mentioned but there is absolutely no question that a precision machinist could reproduce the part as well as the tabulator rack. In addition, they may be able to repair the original piece. If money is the issue maybe a youtuber like Inheritance Machining might help.

@@dr.typewriter-venneburgtyp121 I understand. High quality, in focus, well lit photos of the piece taken from all faces next to a ruler could be sent out for repair quotes. Alternatively they could be used to generate a 3D model for 1) a machining quote or 2) 3D printing of a temporary replacement part.

Very excited to see the comparison of the mechanicals to a No. 5! It’s great how the No. 1 solidified the essentials of a modern typewriter-decades of blind-writers from Remington, and a variety of designs from other companies ranging from “ehh I guess this kinda works” (and I include the Oliver and Daugherty Visible in that) to outright failures... and then Mr. Wagner put this out and Underwood said “this is how it is, The Machine You Will Eventually Buy” and damn if they weren’t right. About the only thing I think a casual user today would really miss in a No. 1 is the backspace.

Hi there! I have one of these in near-mint condition - same colour as yours in the clip. Like you, I'm impressed by the general build quality. It's just got one small issue - the ribbon colour selector works OK in the black and stencil position but jumps out of the red position unless it's held in place. There's an indent for each colour setting beneath the lever but the selector just jumps out of it. Obviously this is not ideal so I wondered if you have any ideas? Many thanks. Regards. Paul

The keys on this typewriter are not original to the machine. They look like they were replaced in the early 1950s. I know this because i have the exact same machine. The original keys were black bakelite, which doesnt always keep its shape. In fact, on my machine, some of the keys are visibly misshapen. The green keys are an improvement.
