Why CRT TVs Are IMPORTANT for Retro Gaming
Переглядів 547 тис.2 місяці тому
Hope you guys get some enjoyment out of watching this one, I put quite a bit of effort into it. Also I do wanna touch on how difficult it really is to record a CRT TV, these things will fight your camera tooth and nail. Given this it should be clear that this footage doesn't do my CRT justice, but I can assure you guys that this thing looks insane in person. I also wanted to say that the footag...

Wow, I didn't know that you can upscale on DesMuMe. I used MelonDS earlier this year because I thought that was the only DS emulator that allows upscaling.
Ah yesssss I loved the way my tv would sound fuzzy with static and made my peach fuzz arm hair on my arms stand up when I’d turn it on and power my SNES. Not even being sarcastic.
I think this “CRTs are THE way to play retro games” is classic gatekeeping bs. I think it’s straight up obnoxious to say CRTs are “better” than LCDs. It reminds me of when people would SWEAR by vinyl over CDs. Blah.
As someone who was born in the 80s, I LIVED through the era of CRTs… And let me tell you, people who HAD to use them was more than happy to toss them in the garbage when LCDs came on the scene. I hate this revisionist history that’s going on with CRTs. I will never use a CRT again in my life and I couldn’t be more happy with that decision.
I'm generally a "good enough" kinda person when it comes to visual quality in gamee; I can deal with 30fps video, I don't need my graphics settings on ultra, and I don't care too much about how retro games look when I'm already degrading the quality by playing them on my phone during my morning commute. I will say though, it's been more than a decade that I actually took the time to play a game, completely relaxed, on my living room TV, so I can absolutely relate to the feeling of wanting the best quality when I do 100% engage with the medium. It's kinda like with music, where I'm totally fine with mp3s coming out of cheap bluetooth headphones when I'm outside because I'm not gonna be able to enjoy the qualities of better equipment with all the noise going on, but when I'm at home on a quiet sunday, putting on good AKGs and listening to a lossless album through a good DAC is definitely a better experience (and I'm gonna leave out the whole debate on digital vs analog audio and whether a studio master should be listened to differently to a live recording... I'm just saying that I understand the value of good equipment, I'm just selective in, which event warrants bringing out the fancy china, y'know) And regarding the "what did the artists think" question, I think they considered it just like any artist would their medium (at least it seems that way to me and has influenced my own art process): Some were evidently very cognizant of how their digital pixel art would appear on an analog display, while others might've just gone with the equivalent of "BIC pen on printer paper," i.e. just acknowledge that the game won't look 1:1 like the pixel art, but not worry too much about it. You can see that shift through the lifetime of the medium, too, like how the first Final Fantasy had character sprites clearly outlined in black, but by the later titles that outline would be colored in with darker tones of the surface they were surrounding, up to the point of subpixel animation, which is too much for me to describe but @Ansimuz made a great video 5 years ago, here (ua-cam.com/video/Wqd6epIWo6E/v-deo.html). Loved this video, thank you for going so in depth on the topic 👍 And pardon my rambling, brevity is unfortunately not my strong suit xD Just thought it couldn't hurt to add to the conversation while we're at it.
Saw a pvm on marketplace, $450 lol. Looks wicked nice though
I have a Sony Triniton in the giant, wooden unit. It's a beast, but works great!
CRT TVs, combined with the PS1 and survival horror games worked so perfectly together to make those games a little bit more scary!!!
🇬🇧 👍🏽 November 2024 What an awesome piece! Subscribed!
As a 90s kid, I appreciate thr Switch having a built in CRT filter for the retro games. It isn't perfect (miss the buzz and static and just the feeling of sitting in front of those bricks) but it's a nice touch. Nostalgic as I am though I definitely prefer modern tech for accessibility and portability 😂
At 6:48 I had a feeling it was god of war by only seeing the R2 button and then 30 seconds later i realised i was right Maybe ive played too much god of war
Any Sony trinitron(pre-wega) is ideal. Easily identifiable by the from glass being flat in the vertical axis and a slight curve in the horizontal.
Totally agree.
CRT is a must for appreciating retro games
Lmao, this guy does a great video, far better explained than even digital foundry!! Seriously, I'm big on retro games, and live for old games, constantly watching these type of videos, this is THE UNDISPUTED BEST of these type of videos ive ever seen!!! Hat's off buddy!!!🫡🫡🫡👌👌👍👍
Disagree, I play my snes, and other retro consoles on my LG UQ7070 4ktv with no problems , their old games, not gonna look like modern games, especially n64 and before generations wise, emulation manipulation the games to literally add and redraw pixels in the images
Their not
This is probably one of the best informative videos for casuals I have ever seen on a topic, I am so glad I came to this video first to learn more about this. Love your style, and thanks!
I was enjoying the video until you started repeating yourself... a lot. But thank you I'll definitely consider the artists intention before judging the art. Composite is always a favorite for me because it reminds me of being a kid
first gens plasma screens was not so bad but crt's was definitely the best, not "hd" crts, olds sd crts
Local zoomer wants to look cool by pretending older tech is better than current tech. A filter does more than enough if you like blurring the image so you see less of it. NOBODY back in the day was saying HDTVs were a bad investment because you had to suffer seeing a sharper, clearer image. You're basically doing the same thing as saying horse blinders are better than glasses because they "leave more to your imagination". What a fkn tool.
not only old videogames looks great on crt's. Also old movies looks marvelous.
love this video
It tooks me about half of the video to get it was a 1h long video. Very nice content, my gentleman.
One thing, I had a friend with Epilepsy. Older displays weren't great for him because they increased the risk of seizures.
No fucing shit. I take it, you didn't grow up in that era.
I'm thinking about getting a toshiba with a built-in vcr, but I'm kinda worried about burden do you know away around this 🫤
This may be controversial but I don't miss these CRT TVs even for a second. The hum, the inability to play NTSC games (im from EU), the crazy power-draw, PITA to repair? On top of that, CRTs can "fade" and are consumable. Not to mention the space they take. I still appreciate them, but wouldn't want to own one.
This was a super interesting video and I really enjoyed learning about CRTs :) I agree I don't really like raw pixels that much, through the CRT it looks a lot smoother. Do you know if during instances that a TV only needs to display one set of lines, is it the "odds" or "evens" set? Also if you have a Nintendo switch and NSO, how do you think the CRT filter on the retro softwares compare with real CRT?
After some hunting on marketplace i found a toshiba 34hf84 for free. Has 540p/1080i with multiple component ports, svideo, and composite. Even an HDMI port. There are still bargains to be found
Thanks for not bashing my love of retro games via emulation
This could be the BEST video that describes 240p vs 480i/p‼️‼️‼️
Does melon ds multi player work on the call of duty games
I gave up on crt TVs. Now I use retro arch with crt shaders
By the time I move out of my parents home and have the space for a crt tv they will have problems or they will stop working…
My brother in Christ the thumbnail is a crt filter
1. They look cool
I like raw pixel and crt
Interlaced video at 60 Hz gives you 60 fields per second and 30 frames per second. That means that you can have 60 intervals of motion per second, even though you only have 30 full frames per second. It's a concept that confused people even back in the time of CRTs, let alone now, when everything is progressive.
This video made me realise that true nostalgia for flat pixel art is rarer than I thought. It existed with the PC and DOS games where the CRT monitors were progressive scanning and much higher resolution while the games were still lower resolution: the pixels were very much visible.
You don’t need a crt, just a scaler with a scan line filter. Once you’ve got the scan lines on the screen finagle with the brightness and sharpness and you’ll be able to make the image look like a crt.
Yep. Back in 2004 my father upgraded the theatre system, 62 inch Sony crt, oddly enough it wasn’t all that heavy, 1080i tv and games looked GREAT on this bad boy. Sadly. Don’t have it. Had I known what I do now I would’ve kept it somehow and bought some extra projection bulbs given they had a standard 1k hour life span, or was it 10k? Can’t remember. These crts will eventually die as parts decay, bulbs go dead etc. sad… wouldn’t be so much an issue if game preservation wasn’t a pain in the ass.
Another thing about CRT flicker, it's least noticeable when you are looking directly at it. Something about the predominance of one type of receptor towards the center that allows for more persistence of vision, where as towards the edges, they are more focused to fast motion. So, if you feel that you are used to looking at your CRT and won't notice any flicker, just look to the space beside it, and you'll find it right quick.
And now, you know the pain of some of us old heads, when we go out to take out the trash, and see that one of our neighbours decided to get rid of "that thing in the basement," and we see the dreaded sign that we're going to have back-ache for the next two days... "Working" scrawled across the dust on the front. Edit: Only happened to me once, but, it was a HELL of a lot better than when I had to help lug a 300 lbs monster out of a buddy's basement rental. First attempt I tried solo and at the end I was fetal by a television gently resting at the foot of the stairs. Unrelated edit: Not going to blame you for ignoring spade lugs. Literally when the updated NES box came out for North America was released, you could use that same box on your older systems that used spade lugs and it worked out of the box. Nintendo included the spade lug connectors to pass through to your old antenna and television if they used them. Since I remember a lot about the old downstairs television and setting up various systems with it, even when the old upstairs television moved downstairs, the NES/SNES were on the primo television, while the garage sale Colecovision whose connector was lug by default became a haven for anyone who came downstairs, be it someone wanting to game while I dominated the old upstairs, or myself if pops wanted at the Tengen Pacman on the NES.
Hi a network engineer here i whould throw a wild guess in the round that it has something to do with the public ip you recieve from your network provider and combined with the same port both laptops probably use to communicate with the wfc server it could be that the wfc sees both laptops as one and ignores the requests of one computer when you want i can try to explain you the problem in detail maybe that is something for your video
it’s astonishing to me that we STILL don’t have a proper CRT emulation filter standard. it’s NOT ENOUGH to just overlay horizontal blackout lines!!!
26:34 One of the best image quality comparisons Ive seen, one is flat and bright, one is dim and has the suggestion of more detail (like it's more 3D actually).
26:40 - You're not wrong. "Pixel-art" games were not designed to have each pixel show up as a sharp square, with the graphics then looking like something built out of legos. The graphics were designed to blend together smoothly, with resulting soft edges. When I play classic old games on an emulator on PC, I favor filters that come close to the CRT look, though I don't often choose to simulate scan lines.
The only thing I disagree with is getting a standard definition CRT definitely get 480P if you can find it. There's tons of consoles that use it.
Standard definition by definition caps out at 480i. There are CRTs that can do 480p but you wouldn’t call those CRTs standard definition. Those are either gonna be enhanced definition or even high definition crts.
@godpuu4093 for sure, I was just saying, I disagree with your advice for going for a standard definition CRT. I personally would say get one that can do 480p or scart or get a computer monitor wii / dreamcast + other look great at 480p but like you said, it depends on the use case and who you ask.
@@godpuu4093 yesss I totally agree with the other commentor! You should look into crt monitors and using converters to get a 480p output naturally out of it since crt monitors are actually pretty flexible with different resolution support. 480p content on a crt monitor tends to look really crisp and clear with proper 480p output. You may not get 240p and 480i on it from retro consoles but a native 480p display will look much better than 480i on a standard crt or 480p on a modern hd tv
Interesting ... NTSC 60Hz was the standard in most places But here in Europe PAL was the standard with only 50Hz , that said our TVs in the 90s had most commonly Scart RGB connectors and / or Composite by default , Component and S-Video were super rare. There were also 100Hz TVs in europe but they werent great for gaming because they showed the same frame twice , which caused input lag. 50 and 100 Hz were basicly the standard here , because the movie / film industry around the globe captured video material in 24fps , at least thats how i remember it , but please correct me if im wrong. Anyways , between NTSC and PAL , PAL did noticeably lag behind NTSC when it came to speedrunning or reaction times. So when you needed it for competitive reasons you would most of the time go with NTSC. Unless you intentionally needed the lag for some speedrun glitches , then you would use the PAL version.
I don't understand why any company has developed a convex 4:3 screen for retro gaming. MAME with bgfx mode and effects such as crt-geom-deluxe looks absolutely stunning without the need for a bulky, heavy and problematic CRT (dealing with dozens of diferent resolution modes, refresh rates, screen adjustments, etc... that's all a hassle). The only think left is having a 4:3 screen (25" would be perfect), preferably oled with pure blacks, vivid colors, 1000 nits, of course freesync and with a curved (convex) surface to mimic old arcade monitors. With modern technology of flexible screens I suppose that wouldn't be impossible. Just imagine that screen, with a mount that can be easily rotated for vertical games, and easily removable from its frame in case you want to install it in your arcade cabinet.
Why would they? It’s a niche market and won’t make as much money as the standard
@@Mario-zi8wr Because it would be a unique monitor and there would be enough potential buyers among the retro fans: those who don't want to deal with CRTs or can't find one in good conditions.
@@-Elaphe- okay? But a 16:9 display is enough.
@@-Elaphe- it would be very expensive though
