A well known song by Gilbert & Sullivan and 45 collided in my brain, and this satire was dragged out from the resulting collision. It is not fair to inflict my singing voice on the rest of the world, so I have provided the lyrics and a synthetic voice for you to patch the two together. Created in Sibelius6 and iMovie (the new iMovie is ghastly, I have to find something better).

First performance, 11 April 2015 Felicity Hayward, soprano St Mary Magdalene Parish Church, Munster Square, London, NW1 3PL Although the final fifth song is not available, the cycle also has a completeness ending as it does here. I would like to provide the translations but as they are copyright all I can do is to refer you to the excellent book where I found these haiku, Japanese Death Poems: ...

Ô bruit doux de la pluie Par terre et sur les toits ! Pour un coeur qui s'ennuie, Ô le chant de la pluie ! Il pleure sans raison Dans ce coeur...

Travelling Heathrow Express is agony as there is no escaping the man. Even this short clip is enough to bring on an overdose, so I thought I would let others suffer as well. I'm all heart tonight.

On 22 May 2012, Laing had his second lot of Chemotherapy. I took my camera along and photographed it. Some of those photos I assembled into this small video which Laing never saw, nor never wanted to (unless if he looked at this behind my back). The music is a dreadful computer performance of Erik Satie's Gnossienne No. 1. Although I do not generally like the use of music I love to accompany a ...

In 1990 my late partner and I walked from Checkpoint Charlie to the Ostbahnhof following our noses and a map. Parts of the wall had already disappeared. We only had instinct and map reading skills to guide us. In 2013, I followed the walk with only my memory, a few photos and the video camera to register what once was.

Erich Honecker *was* a bastard, and a tyrant. This young man, Peter Fechter, was one of many defenseless, unarmed East German civilians who were shot and killed in cold blood, simply because they wanted to leave.

The wall was built when Walter Ulbricht was in power and he was in power when Peter Fechter was butchered, and the buck stops with Ulbricht. That is not to say I exonerate the actions of others at different times, but you should place the blame where it lies.

@@Gwailo54 This is true. I actually should have said this about Ulbricht. I stand corrected. Honecker was also a rather nasty piece of work, though.

Back in the 80's I used to go sit at Peter Fechter's memorial when things weren't going so good. What went on there, the simple wooden cross, the Wall and surrounding vacant ground all put things into perspective. I find it hard to accept this is the exact same spot, what with all the corporate tosh surrounding it... but obviously it is. How things change. Thanks for the upload.

I first saw the simple wooden cross a year to the day after the wall came down. Then the area really was all wasteland. Behind the cross there was still part of the wall. I never understood as a child when the wall went up who would do such a thing or why. I am deeply saddened that today more people want to build walls rather than build bridges.

Gwailo54 Yes, it really was a poignant location. I last visited it 4 nights after the wall fell. There was a guy selling pieces of the wall for DM5 but I rented his pick axe for DM5 and hacked out my own piece, right were Charlottenstrasse gave up to the wall. I've still got it. Great memories.

I'm also in need of the date this new Peter Fechter memorial was unveiled to the public, for a piece I'm writing. I can't find this information anywhere!

@@More-than-ladyboys, perhaps if you contact the Checkpoint Charlie Museum they might be able to help. If memory serves me well, they have the original Peter Fechter memorial.

I lived in mannheim, germany for 5 years. And I have only recently learnt about such things. And it makes me stop and think, i was born in 1985 and i was too young to really have understood what was happening in the late 80's early 90's with the berlin wall. But when i learn of these things i do feel a bit more of a connection to germany, more than the average american with having lived there myself as well as my mother growing up in germany. So my heart honestly goes out to those people that had to endure the time of the berlin wall in germany. And my heart goes out to those that lost loved ones.

+Chris L Things like the death of Peter Fechter, certain images of the Vietnam war are part of the collective memory of my generation. I'm sure others can come up with other examples. I count myself lucky to have lived where and when I have. I was never compelled to run away to be free.

Since posting the video I overheard a tour guide explaining to Americans the tubes carry liquids, blue is clean water, purple or pink is waste water. They are erected as temporary measures. I didn't hear the rest of the explanation as the grüner Ampelmann came along and I was able to cross the road and get out of the fearsome heat of the sun.

I'm glad you like it. I was fumbling to get the camera ready to record but my fingers were too cold to respond, the wind was bitingly cold! According to the exif data (and I don't know how accurate that is) it was recorded at 18.39 on Christmas Day 2008. Probably the time used is GMT.
