Hoka Skyward X…but why?? Full Review
Переглядів 3172 місяці тому
The Hoka Skyward X is a popular shoe. Here’s my full review and how I felt about running in it. #hoka #skywardx #shoereview #marathontraining #runninggear #midlifehealth #runningshoes #hokashoes
I have the Asics Metaspeed Edge plus and Sky plus. I stopped using them for long runs because the heel is narrow and I need to concentrate on how I land.. Did my longest run of the year a day ago in the Nimbus 26 (wide). No pains or anything like that after the run.. If I was running a marathon soon I will use the Hoka Cielo X1 or Endorphin Pro 3..
How many miles did you run in this shoe?
I had around 150 miles in them. I could have gotten more I believe but the Mach X2 and Nike ZF6 are just more comfortable/fun to run in.
Love it...cut more shoes in half and do the durometer on their midsoles to compare to the Asics Magic Speed 4.
I definitely will once I get some miles in them. Thanks for watching!!
@@justjared82 Maybe just cut one shoe in half and save the other shoe for side-by-side run/ride comparisons (example Asics Novablast 5 on one foot and Nike Zoomfly 6 on the other foot). Or, cut just one shoe in half on all brands and just do side by side run/ride comparisons. But, based on stack height differences, it may do wonders on your hips and knees though.
I have a pair of Novablast 5’s inbound. Definitely going to do a run with one a 4 and a 5 on each foot.
@@justjared82 look forward to that comparison. If you have time I’d like to see a side by side (shoe on each foot) between the Novablast 5 & Zoomfly 6…to differentiate the ride and stability of those two shoes.
Pretty cool seeing one of my favorite shoes dissected.
I didn’t really know what to expect, that FF Turbo puck is pretty small
@ yea, all the reviewers always made a point of saying a “small puck size”. It was interesting to see the weight of the plate, etc
I can get the Alphafly 3 on sale.. In Europe on sale is $260.. I have the Alphafly V1 and V2.. I use them for long runs.. Can't decide on the V3.
Did my first run in it today. I’m undecided but it definitely didn’t blow me away
Great video 🎉
Good review. Why do you think they designed the insole that way?
I have no idea why this model was so intrusive. I have a normal width foot and high arch and it was terrible. The Phantom’s arch was noticeable, but nothing like this. The wide toe box and narrow mid/rear foot makes a lot of sense, but I sure don’t understand the arch.
I too love shoes and I'm a firefighter! I share my triathlon races and training on my channel.
@@tritwinsmom4024 awesome, I just subscribed, looking forward to watching your vids!

Thank you very much!
Indeed the arch is very stiff.. I love the feeling of a high arch but this one was terrible. I run in a few pairs of Topo Ultrafly 5 and they were good. Atmos was a disappointment. Novablast 5 on the list...
Absolutely! I really wanted it to work but it was indeed painful. Less than a week til the Novablast 5!!! Thanks again for always supporting the channel! Good lookin Rottie by the way.
I found the midsole harsh.. Tongue to short for heel lock.. 😂
Solid review, Jared. I’m in the “sounds-good-but-don’t-need-it-yet” camp that you you described. But maybe next year, when I’ve worn through all my super trainers, I’ll pick this one up at a discount!
Do they ever go on discount?!?🤣
Congratulations on your huge PR, Jared! And thanks for the reminder to show gratitude. So important and too often overlooked. I’m guilty of it. Happy belated Veterans Day to you!
Thank you, sir. I see you have a Glideride Max video up, I’ll be watching that here shortly, one of my favorites of 2024! Thanks for watching!
MACH X 2's fatal flow is it cuts my heels! So for whatever shortcomings the Magic Speed 4 has, i'll take the latter
I have heard several ppl have that issue. The Mach X3 is an upper update and should fix that if you liked the midsole.
I love how you painted the picture for the GM2 being the perfect dad shoe 😂
It’s definitely got the “dad” look!
Love the visuals . All these shoes are 170-200 and every brand keeps adding a max. Magmax, glycerin max, ghost max, surfer max, ultra max , I’m maxed out. Super trainers too. I think im aiming for endorphin speed 4, evo SL and maybe try Hoka Mach x 3.
Thanks for watching, Andrew! Yea, between “Max” and some version of “roll” it’s starting to get repetitive. The Mach X3 fixes that upper, should be a great shoe and Brooks is finally getting in the Peba game.
cool channel, enjoyed the review. question. i’m a community pharmacist who stands 12 hrs a day, pretty much in the same spot. i do some movement, but mostly just standing, adjusting myself etc, in a little 4ft by 4ft “station.” what shoe would you recommend for me? i discovered brooks ghost a couple years ago and it was a game changer. had basically just been doing middle of the road nikes or new balance before. i’m 38, btw. 6 ft 1, about 180.
Thank you for watching! If you enjoyed thevBrooks Ghost, I think you would enjoy the Ghost max (either version) even more because it has a lower drop and more forefoot cushioning. Also the New Balance More, Asics Nimbus, & Hoka Clifton are comfortable “daily wear” shoes. I hope this helps!
Great review.
Thank you! And thanks for your support of the channel.
I love that you had a completely different experience than Yowana haha
Did he hate them? I guess I can watch his review now
@@justjared82 he calls them 'gloomfly bricks' 😂 He has a different opinion on a shoe than me in a fair number of cases. Particularly the Superblast, which is my favorite shoe of all time by far but which he hates. Everybody's different. Different physique, running style, fitness level etc. Different preferences in feel and ride. If you read or watch a review paying more attention to the reviewer's subjective feelings about it you're doing it wrong. And if a reviewer focuses more on their feelings about the shoe than on describing its features and performance in disinterested terms, *they're* doing it wrong.
Gloomfly Bricks…lol, pretty funny. It is interesting to hear the different opinions on each shoe. Thanks again for watching.
While I completely expect different runners to have a variety opinions on a pair of shoes Yowana's review really confuses me. He says he feels like there's no cushion and that he is slamming right down on the carbon plate. Meanwhile I find the ZF6 to be one of the most cushioned shoes Ive ever worn and I almost question if they are too soft. It doesnt even sound like the same shoe.
@WildOutdoorLiving I understand, I feel its a little less forgiving in the forefoot but not terrible…at 20+ miles i may not feel that way.
So it seems like a pretty good tempo shoe. How's the toe off feel? Nike shoes always feel thinner than I like at the toe even if they report the forefoot stack as being comparable to other shoes I like.
I thought it felt propulsive, especially with the ground feel in forefoot area. One thing I didn’t mention was it has that typical “Nike” slap sound when you run, not as bad as Tempo Next% but still some noise.
@justjared82 Somebody went by me in a pair of AlphaFlys on my run Sunday. I guess it's different from the slap but man are those things loud! It actually startled me.
😛 you’re not sneaking up on anybody in those!
@@justjared82 How does this shoe compare to the Tempo Next%s (and the Superblast if you have tried them)? I loved how I could hold the pace for long distances in the Tempos easily. For context, I've tried the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2 and the Boston 12, but they didn't even come close. The closest I have got to that feeling is in the Adios Pro 3s, but those can't do quicker paces well.
These have more cushion than the Tempo Next%, but are as “poppy” without the air pods. I think if you took the TN% a long distance you could take these even further due to more/softer cushion. As far as SB, I didn’t like those at all so I may not be the person to ask. I thought the SB felt like running on Yoga blocks. Very bulky and boring, so I obviously like the ZF6 better. I hope this helps!
Great info… didn’t know you are FD, retired LEO here. Another reviewer said same thing about lack of forefoot cushioning during long or faster runs. I watched a Nike Zoom Fly vs Adidas Evo SL yesterday and this reviewer who ran through wet pavement w/some fallen leaves said grip of both shoes were bad but was even worse on Evo SL. Since I don’t need either, I think I’ll wait for the ASICS Novablast 5 to ship beginning of December
The FD pays the bills(and buys the shoes🤣). I didn’t think the grip was bad, but there weren’t any leaves on the track. Congrats on retirement…8 more years for me unless I can get a desk job, then I might stay longer.
Are the screw not tight? When you touch the handles(around 6min mark) the whole upper assembly moves
I noticed that as well so I tightened them up. Good to go now! Thsnk you for watching
Please do an Asics Novablast 5 vs NB Rebel v4 vs Adidas Evo SL. When you do, please advise on the toe box width of the Adidas Evo SL. Great Indepth reviews you are doing.
Definitely grabbing the Novablast 5 when it drops for us common folk. Haven’t been able to get the Evo SL yet either but it’s on the list! Thank you for watching, Nike Zoom Fly 6 review will be up tomorrow.
@ good to hear
@ thank you
Had my first run in these today and they felt great. Great cushion with responsiveness and love the gentle roll forward. They are also relatively light for their stack height.
Glad you like them! They definitely feel lighter on foot than they do on the scale. I hope you continue to enjoy them as much as I have!
How did you bend the hoka like that 😭 mine doesn't bend in the slightest
Lol, pure 💪🏼😂. Maybe mine are defective 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah I saw that guy running sub 3 in Crocs... so we have no excuses when coming to shoes... lol😂
I guess when you’re his age you can get away with that stuff…I wouldnt have been able to walk for a month!
I sold thousands of shoes.. In 80% of people the left foot is thicker and longer than the right one. Basically left foot most often half size bigger.. This is why people have pressure pain (toes etc) on the left foot.
Wow, that makes sense now, I appreciate the insight. Yea, they call them Elites for a reason!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Endorphin Elite hard on the feet.. Midsole to hard for the Marathon unless you can finish it at Elite pace 😂
Congratulations on your new PR! As a 71-year-old runner I am thankful that I can still run. Every mile is a gift. Here is NC we call it a toboggan.
Glad you’re still out there getting it, keep it up! Toboggan it is, thanks for watching!
I saw so many volt Alpha flys too! Good perspective in the review
They make a very distinct sound too!
massive congratulations for a great time and a new pr. Totally agree with the importance of gratitude to be able to run ......i can`t spare from remembering you, what i suggested about your choice of race shoes ....so here i copy my thoughts from last month No way i would try out another new shoe before the marathon, that is more confusion than you want. You need to run in shoes you put trust. So the big question is: Do you trust the Endorhine pro 4 despite the fact, that the result of the marathon was not what you wanted. If you have a solid trust in the pro 4 you take it again, if you have any doubt the Mach 6 would be my choice To be honest, for all middle of the pack runners a modern daily trainer is just fine for a great marathon experience, comfort and good feelings for the feet is much more important than anything else for runners slower than 2:57.......take your shoe choice to run the half as a final try out......getting the pacing right is much more important for you than the weight of the shoes I am sure you have a sub 3 hour marathon in you, and with the learnings you did over a short time, you might improve over the next 5 years....keep up the patience and the consistency, and you will go a long way edit: oh yeah for me it is a woolen hat🤣
A woolen hat…that’s a new one! Yes, I do remember you telling me that and unfortunately I didn’t heed good advice🥲. Next time I will definitely err on the side of comfort. Thanks for your continued watching and interaction!
Congrats, and thanks for the perspective check at the end.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Great run there!
Thank you, Indy didn’t disappoint!
I call it a toboggan too! 😂. Congrats again on a great run and PR!
I think we’re right!! Thanks for watching 👊🏼
Ijust bought it
Great choice!!!
I picked Glideride Max instead
Keep me posted on how ya like it!
Compare to Clifton 8, plz. ty
I enjoyed the Clifton 8, but found Mach 6 much more responsive and a tad softer. The upper is a little more “fitted” and more breathable. Stack height, drop, and stability are all about the same. I just found Mach 6 able to do more paces where the Clifton was more of a slower daily trainer/recovery shoe.
5mm is pretty low. I never got along well w/ the Clifton. I prefer 8-10
What do you usually run in?
@@justjared82 Triumph 20. Wave Sky 7.
@ i haven’t ran in either of those, but I do enjoy most Sauconys
It's SHOETIME!
There he is 👊🏼
Did you ever run in the Mach X1? Curious to know if you found any differences in the midsole?
I didn’t. From what I understand the 2 is a big improvement because the Peba foam was added where the V1 was all EVA foam.
I ordered the Zoom Fly 6 and had to send it back. It felt great under foot and the upper felt great on top of my foot. For some reason, the plastic heel counter was a bit uncomfortable for my heel. I wanted to try it and even though I could have and still returned it to RW, I always feel bad if I wear a pair of shoes and then send them back. I might try the Mach x2. I tried it on and it felt great too.
That’s why they have the return policy! There’s definitely no plastic in the heel counter of the MX2😂. Let me know whatcha get, thanks for watching again!
Good luck with your marathon!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I’m a fan of the Glideride Max. Lovely foot strike with some energy.
Yes indeed! Thanks for watching!

I have the Mach X2 and it’s a great shoe
I agree, gonna be hard to beat it
Very curious about the Nike. You got the best colour ❤
Hoping to get some miles in it next week depending how I feel
I have the Mach X2. Very comfortable. ❤❤❤
Thumbnail game stepping up!!
Nice shoe review. What kind of power rack is that behind you? I have subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing! It is a Ritfit brand rack, got it from Amazon. It’s not professional grade by no means but plenty sturdy for what I need. The weak point are the bolts, I replaced those with better ones. If I had to do it over again I wouldn’t get the rack with the two cables because they’re almost too close to do crossovers and sometimes it’s cumbersome to get everything the way you need it without having a cable in the way.
@ thank you very much for the detailed review!
I am a big runner and slow runner.. do you believe it is a shoe for me or you suggest me something else for long runs? The novablast do not like i injured, i prefer the more v4
I’m a bigger guy myself(190 pounds), and I did not feel like I bottomed these out, but I do feel like they want you to pick up pace a tad. I recommend you stick with NB More, or if you want to try something new the Asics Nimbus 25 or 26, the Hoka Clifton, Nike Invincible 3, or Brooks Ghost Max 1 or 2 would probably be good options for you. Thanks for watching and I hope that helps!
I found the glide max in really good price.. Propably i will take that than nimbus in that price
@ i agree that it’s definitely worth the small price increase over the Nimbus
