This trip was filmed using my 8mm Movie Camera. I'm quite sure it was my Canon 814, which was a very good model. The tramp was to be 7 days, but due to the weather we ended it a day earlier. I had hoped to reach the Hut on the first day, but I was over optimistic. Here is a current link to anyone wanting to read about this area. tramper.nz/165/whytowhywhy-a-route-guide-for-waitewaewae/

    I setup and calibrated the VHF/UHF telecoms systems on these loco's during the late 1980's. Local techs and Loco staff had expertly installed the radios wiring and antennae prior to my efforts. Intense times, I was on my own, with my nous and skinned knuckles, that was how it was done back in the day. Once the task was completed the Loco Engineers invited me to their Friday drinks and surprise surprise I won the meat raffle, A huge carton of meat weighing about 15kg's, it was only when I unpacked the meat at home that I discovered a railway wagon coupling hook of about 10-12 Kg's nestled under the meat. Happy non pc days when taking the piss was considered part of the waft and weft of life. I almost pissed myself laughing when I discovered the deception.

      Yes and she said she nearly fell down the cliff into the Otaki river. She said it was so dark that she was being guided by the fence on her right and just before she reached a slip under the fence a bolt of lightning lit up the gap. Lucky her. That next trip from Otaki Forks was when a bloke convinced Grant to leave the keys with him so he could look after the car. What a con.

    Those dreams you followed Roly made you one of the kindest in inspirational people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. While most of 23 Carlisle Street was completed by the time I joined NZR. Many a time as I climbed the bank into Cambridge street on a weekend from the shunting yards to head home to our railway house, I would often hear the neighbourhood kids expressing delight in riding your fantastic rail setup. Seeing my little daughter in video two, cementing her place in a wagon for a trip around your home railway reminded me of precious days long since passed. Thanks for the memories Roly, take care Sir, was a real pleasure knowing you.😊👍

I was shocked to hear he had died, after I came back to the job in the 1970's. Later I worked with your Uncle Ray, we were both Shunters in the Milson Yard and both of us had worked as Farm Fencing Contractors in the early 1970's. Cool, but I guess the hardest audience is the daughter of the farmer who ran the dairy farm where the train was being shunted!! I remember those trains well - from mid-1963 when we took over that farm. And avoiding the trains running into our cows that crossed the tracks twice daily. So in case anyone thinks otherwise, we didn't also make them swim to the cowshed. Simply, the terrain is a bit flattened in the video in other words. I'll have to share some more farm aerial photos with you Roland. Lots of memories of that era. Good to see it all either way 🙂

    • @valburr9595
      @valburr9595 Рік тому

      @@rolandpenhall4526 Yes. The farm backed on to Hume Pipes and various other stopping points. The biscuit factory there (Griffins ?) was also a train stopping point just before reaching Humes (from our direction, but the opposite side of the tracks). To that one you could add a whole swarm of Clyde Crescent kids stealing biscuits from it and taking them across to our hayshed to eat them. Dad did quite well out of snacks found abandoned in the hayshed - then my younger brothers tried the same trick and Dad went and paid for what they had pinched. He wasn't impressed. I've also (several weeks ago) done research on the fuel depots - which I remember extremely well from about 1960 before we moved to the Napier Road farm. Prior to that we had gone to Roslyn School. Shunting happened then as school finished for the day - which was crazy

      @@valburr9595 Oh I do recall shunting all of those sidings as a shunter in the mid 1970's until the early 1980's. Then there was an extra siding for a grain company on the same side as the biscuit company which I believe was Aulsbrooks, at that time. Yes there was a restriction put on for shunting those petrol sidings and Vibrapak siding, all close to the Tremain Avenue railway crossing.

      @@rolandpenhall4526 Aulsebrooks (just had to check spelling) sounds right. I'll have to ask my brother. Actually I think he owns their subsequent factory which also had a siding at one time. In 1987 I was involved with a protest to try to convince NZR (or whatever its name was at the time) to stop shunting over the road at 3:00pm when the kids were going home from Roslyn School. I remember that well

      You did'nt notice my comment in the last paragraph. I worked in the Palmerston North loco branch from late 1963 until early 1966, and the only mainline Diesels were the Da. There were the Dsc started back during that time.

      Someone came up with the answer to my problem. Quote: "Stupid question (probably) but you don't have a section of track lain below the terrain do you? Have you looked under and gotten to the bottom of the chasm? I've had rogue track half a mile in the air before now with no real clue how or when I got it there so it stands to reason there could be some half a mile below. It may be that the "snap to" tool is getting confused and snapping to that instead see. Just a thought anyway." End Quote He was right.
